My month
in pictures
from the
(guest!) editor
Welcome to our August issue! Gemma has been away this
month and has left the reins to me... I’ve been fortunate
enough to have a week lounging in the Greek sun with my
Mum. Take a look at my ‘holiday empties’ on page 69. I also
had a weekend in Swansea with the girls. Having never been
to Wales before, I vow to explore more of the UK over the
next few months. Next stop... Scotland?
July also welcomed the Moët & Chandon July Festival at
Newmarket Racecourses. Ladies Day is one of my favourite
days of the year and this year didn’t disappoint. The sun
shone all day, our picnic was better than ever (we’re talking
a full cheese board, smoked salmon and prawn vol-auvents,
homemade scones, millionaire’s shortbread and of
course prosecco!), but sadly there were no winners for me.
The fashion this year was incredible. Take a look at what the
winners wore on page 52.
Elsewhere in this issue, read about raspberries, this year’s
Fashion Show and my trip to Co - Cherry Hinton’s new
health-conscious café. I’ve been dreaming about their
cacao and almond cake ever since. Find out more on page
National
allotment Week
National Allotment Week runs from
8-14th August and is a time to celebrate
that brilliant British institution, the
allotment. We speak to the owner of the
Allotment Café, Katie Moore about why
allotments are so important to her.
How did you get started with your
allotment, and when did you start to
turn it into a business?
I had been living in Shanghai for a year
prior to returning to Cambridge, and fresh
produce hadn’t featured too prominently
in my diet. Faced on my return with the
start of the British summer and a tin full of
seeds, I threw myself into tending to our
allotment and was immediately hooked.
The business grew from there out of a
desire to share this food, and the ethos
behind it, with a wider audience.
Why do you think allotments are
important?
Allotments are a fantastic benefit, not only
in encouraging us to eat more sustainably,
but also in improving our relationship with
food. Growing your own fruit and veg from
seed is incredibly rewarding and getting
kids involved from the very beginning really
improves their willingness to eat well and
try new things.
Velvet Magazine | August 2016 13

Our
This month’s recipe courtesy of Waitrose
Ingredients:
• ½ x 568ml bottle Stella Artois
Cidre
• 4 tbsp maple syrup
• 4 cloves garlic, halved
• 8 sprigs thyme
• 420g essential Waitrose British
Pork Fillet, cubed
• 2 courgettes, thickly sliced
• 8 shallots, halved
• 1 red pepper, seeded and thickly
sliced
• Olive oil spray
Cider-soaked BBQ
Pork Kebabs
1. Place the Cidre in a large glass bowl and
stir in 2 tbsp of the maple syrup, the garlic
cloves and half the thyme sprigs. Add the
pork and leave to soak for at least an hour or
overnight.
2. Lift out the pork, discarding the
marinade. Thread the meat and vegetables
alternately onto 8 skewers. Spray lightly
with the oil.
3. Barbecue, grill or griddle the skewers
for 15-20 minutes, turning regularly until
cooked through.
TIP
A metal skewer
works best with
meat as it helps
to cook faster.
4. Strip the leaves from the remaining
thyme sprigs and stir into the remaining
maple syrup. Brush onto the skewers and
continue to cook for a further 5 minutes
until shiny and nicely browned. Serve
with leafy salad and a chilled glass of the
remaining cider.
Serves 4
Prep 10 mins + marinating, cook 25 mins

Take a look at Cherry Hinton’s fantastic new health-conscious eatery
This month I popped into Co, Cherry Hinton’s answer to guilt-free
dining, to sample some of their vegan delights and to learn a bit more
about their ethos. Co at No. 15 opened its doors on Cherry Hinton’s
High Street just under two weeks ago, revealing a refreshing interior
and exquisite menu.
When I heard it was boasting local produce and a predominantly
vegetarian menu, I was most intrigued. We caught up with owner
Aksara to find out more about her inspiration and the motivation
behind Co. “I’m really passionate about healthy eating and
promoting a sustainable environment, so it seemed like a natural
decision to open something which reflects this. Luckily the team
here all feel the same and it’s great to be able to share such
enthusiasm,” Aksara explained. “We’ve tried to use as much locally
sourced produce as possible from local farms which are offering
sensibly, and sustainably, sourced meats. Our menu, however, is
“We’ve tried to
use as much
locally sourced
produce as
possible from
local farms”
predominantly vegan. We wanted to
give people the option to add meat to
our dishes instead of taking it away,”
she continued.
Not only does Co offer breakfast,
brunch, lunch and snacks, it also has
a deli counter and selection of goods
for customers to buy. The shelves are
stacked full of paleo products, such
as nut butters from Meridian and
RAW, agave syrups from Biona, goodies from Pump Street Bakery
and raw Conscious chocolate, as well as a selection of nuts, seeds
and grains. Its hanging wicker baskets are laden with fresh organic
fruit and veg, which is also available for customers to purchase. “We
use the ingredients on our shelves to make all of our dishes fresh
each day. We’ve deliberately made our menu really flexible, with
dishes such as ‘Today’s Porridge’ and ‘Today’s Salad’, to enable us to
have as little waste as possible. It also gives our menu a bit of variety
and allows our chefs to work with produce which is seasonably at its
best,” Annabel, part of the Co team, told us.
Written by Sammi Nice
As the girls continued to talk about their journey, we were able
to sample one of their fresh iced coffees, a glass of handmade
lemonade by Square Root London in Hackney and ‘The Green
One’ juice. As a juice fan myself, this was by far my favourite. The
coconut water with lime, kiwi, mint and cucumber was packed full of
goodness as well as being incredibly fresh tasting. Also on offer are
Red, Purple and Orange juices, all named simply by colour, allowing
Co to change the fresh ingredients according to the season. Its
extensive drinks list also contains a variety of shakes, hot drinks and
locally brewed beers. We can’t wait to try the dairy-free vanilla ice
cream shakes with their handmade nut butter!
We also sampled ‘Today’s Porridge’ with tapioca, coconut milk and
flaked coconut. It was incredibly creamy and tasted far more like a
dessert than a breakfast option. We also sampled the toasted bread,
baked from Adilia at the Norfolk Street Bakery, with harissa-spiked
hummus and grated carrot. All I can say is wow! The harissa in the
hummus gave a kick that was just right, while the sliced red onion
and toasted seeds on top made for a really filling dish. I will certainly
be popping back in for this one lunchtime. Priced at just £4.50,
Co is really proving that healthy responsible eating doesn’t have to
cost a fortune. Next up, we tried the courgette spaghetti. Now, if
you’ve not already jumped on the ‘courgetti’ wagon, I suggest you
do so. It’s a great alternative to carby spaghetti or pasta, and is just
as filling, somewhat tastier and good for you too. It was served with
homemade pesto, olives, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and raw
vegan grana padano which is also made in-house. Again, this was
delicious. Not only is this also insanely reasonable at just £5.75, it’s
also completely vegan and contains just six main ingredients. This
too was really filling. Other delights on the menu which we can’t wait
to try include the kati roll, a sweet potato, green pepper, kale, mint
and Greek yoghurt chutney stuffed paratha bread, and the ‘House
Fry Up’, which is completely vegan. This includes wilted spinach,
tomatoes, mushrooms, scrambled tofu, black beans in sauce and
freshly baked quinoa bread. There is the option to swap your vegan
sausages for free-range chicken sausages or your scrambled tofu
for free-range scrambled eggs. If that isn’t enough, there’s also the
brunch salad, the protein quinoa bowl, tacos, seasonal vegetable
soup, ciabatta sandwiches, bircher muesli, granola and a selection of
cakes and baked goods. Each day a varied selection of baked cakes
and breads is available to eat in or takeaway.
Talking of cake... we did get to try their dark chocolate almond cake
made with raw cacao! Yes, it really was as good as it sounds. The
flaked almonds on top were a nice touch and the cake itself was
incredibly rich, all with the added bonus that it was gluten-free. I
couldn’t help but ask for a piece to take away with me. All in all, if
you’re looking for a hot new spot to grab breakfast, somewhere to
enjoy a coffee with friends (along with a healthy piece of freshly
baked cake!), or perhaps a lunch stop, I really would recommend
checking out Co. Not only was the food delicious, it was great to
meet Aksara and Annabel who are both so passionate about their
new venture.
Eat Seasonably:
It’s Berry good
As August sees raspberries
at their prime, we were keen
to see how some of our local
eateries were using it on
their menus
Raspberry Eton Mess
“This dessert is our twist on an Eton Mess,
with raspberries, dried raspberries, raspberry
sorbet, vanilla curd and lime meringue. I
really enjoy working with raspberries as they
have a deliciously intense, sweet taste, and
they don’t continue to ripen once picked,
so you have a consistent product. I typically
use raspberries in different forms to create
varied flavours and textures on the plate;
once dried, the berries take on a slightly
different flavour and become more tart and
less sweet. This is particularly good when
you are trying to create balance within
a dish. Our twist on the Eton Mess is a
perfect example of this; classic meringue
and fresh raspberries with the creaminess
of the vanilla curd, but introducing the
sharpness of lime and the tart,” says chef
patron, Mark Poynton at Alimentum.
Alimentum
Cambridge, CB2 8PB
www.restaurantalimentum.co.uk
These juicy little red berries are not only incredibly sweet and refreshing, they’re
also very popular because of their nutritional character. They’re a fantastic source
of fibre, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc, and are a popular choice for many
dessert options, thanks to their fine flavour.
Raspberry Bakewell Tart
“We always have a Bakewell tart on the
menu, but raspberry is our most popular
flavour and it always sells out very quickly.
It’s made with homemade raspberry jam,
made by Dean, and is lovely by itself or
served warm with clotted cream,” Lou,
co-owner at Baileys 2, tells us.
“For me raspberries are a true reminder
of summer in Suffolk. I remember picking
them from bushes as a child, and have
always loved them since. They have a
distinct sweet flavour, but with enough
acidity to cut through the rich chocolate
in this dish. They are also fantastic with
other berries, caramel flavours and, of
course, just on their own!” says chef at
Ickworth Hotel
Flavour of the
Month
Lee Cooper, Head Chef
at Ickworth Hotel, tells
us about his favourite
dishes, flavours and places
to dine
What is your favourite ingredient to
cook with?
I love cooking fish. It’s so delicate, and
you have to treat it with so much respect.
Cooking it right is a real pleasure.
Which sense do you use most when
cooking?
To be successful you have to rely on all of
your senses in a busy kitchen, but if you
cannot taste your dishes you will never
truly be able to deliver.
What is your most praised dish you’ve
ever cooked?
That’s difficult! It varies so much. My
family love it when I make smoked haddock
risotto, my chefs love it when we get some
amazing produce and we get to play a little
and my guests love it when we cook with
passion and heart.
Name a cooking disaster...
One of the chefs was steaming six cans of
condensed milk, when the chef came over
and unknowingly switched the combi over
to oven. Ten minutes later, after a small
explosion, we were scraping molten hot
condensed milk and fragments of tin from
the walls and ceiling!
Name a simple but effective
‘go-to’ dish.
Slow cooked pork belly and creamed
potatoes.
Favourite international cuisine?
I’ve really fallen in love with Nordic foods
recently, I just love the simple flavours.
Food heaven and food hell?
My food heaven would have to be real
burgers, and my food hell is definitely
prawns.
Who is your favourite chef?
Massimo Bottura.
Favourite local place to eat?
We have a wealth of amazing local chefs in
Suffolk and I couldn’t possibly name one
without the other!
Best restaurant you’ve ever visited?
For my birthday a few years ago I ate at
Petrus with Marcus Wareing. It was truly
incredible.
Favourite wine?
I love a good Rioja or Shiraz, but I am quite
Ickworth Hotel
Suffolk, IP29 5QE
Tel: 01284 735350
www.ickworthhotel.co.uk
limited in wine knowledge, as I always say I
know what I like.
Favourite current food trend?
I love the idea of a food truck, cooking
hyper seasonal and local food.
Favourite time of year?
Autumn is incredible. You still have the tail
end of summer, but the real earthy and
comfort foods really start, as Game season
begins to unfold.
Which celebrity would you love to
cook for and what would you cook
for them?
I’d like to cook for James Corden, he’s
funny and he loves good food!
What would you choose as your
‘last supper?’
I would choose a very long, tasting menu
to stretch the time. A culinary farewell in
my eyes!
sheene mill
shines
With a menu that exudes luxury
seasonal produce with a twist, this
month we visited Sheene Mill
food
Located in the the quaint village of Melbourn, near Royston, this
picturesque 16th century mill offers an array of stunning views
over its old mill pond. We were lucky enough to visit on a scorching
Tuesday afternoon, and really see the surroundings at their best.
Sheene Mill has over twenty weddings booked for this month, and
we can certainly see why. The mill itself is outstanding and the lush
green gardens and peaceful waters really give that added touch.
With plenty of outdoor seating and room for entertaining, it’s the
perfect location.
As we sat overlooking the water, we caught up with Sheene Mill’s
Head Chef, Lee Scott. Lee himself has been working in the catering
industry for over 27 years, so it’s no surprise that the menu reflects
such talent and knowledge. Sheene Mill itself is also the proud
owner of two AA Rosettes, which it is hoping to increase to three.
“Our menu changes every few weeks which enables us to be able
“We aim to keep
it simple with
honest good
produce and an
exciting mix of
flavours”
to offer our customers the very best
seasonal produce to suit the time of
year. We aim to use local suppliers
where possible, but often we find that
there are other places in England
which can offer something which is a
cut above the rest. Our seafood, for
example, comes in fresh from day
boats in Cornwall,” Lee told us. “If we
start with the best, the end result is
going to be the very best,” he continued. “We aim to keep it simple,
with honest, good produce and an exciting mix of flavours.”
As we enjoyed a glass of fresh juice in the sunshine, Lee continued
to talk us though the menu. To start, we had an array of canapés,
including pork beignet with burnt apple purée, tomato and
mozzarella arancini, and a squid cracker with smoked cod roe. These
were bite-sized, yet incredibly punchy. The flavours were really
rich and set the tone nicely for what was to follow. My favourite
was certainly the squid cracker; it was so fresh and had the perfect
balance between the crunch of the cracker and the smooth
creaminess of the smoked cod roe. Next came the aged beef tartar
with mushroom ketchup, smoked mayonnaise and nasturtium.
This was another example of exquisite flavours which really came
together. The crunchy bruschetta pieces really finished it off and
added texture.
As if it couldn’t have got any better, the main event was something
else. We sampled the pan-fried sea trout with South Coast mussels,
white asparagus and samphire. As a huge fan of seafood, this was by
far my favourite. The mussels were de-shelled (meaning hasslefree!)
and had so much flavour. The sea trout was also cooked
to perfection and quite literally melted in your mouth. The other
main dish was Moroccan lamb, consisting of roasted rack, shoulder
pastilla, roast apricot, date purée, cumin carrots and sumac. This
was a really inventive twist on a traditional Moroccan lamb dish, and
again the flavours were really intense. It had the perfect balance of
Moroccan spice and sweetness from the fruit. The meat itself was
tender and came away from the bone effortlessly.
Well, after that, things really got exciting - with pre-dessert… I’d
never heard of that before, but, given the chance of two desserts,
I was most certainly in! Lee described the pre-dessert as a ‘palette
cleanser’ before the real dessert. It was vanilla yoghurt with
caramelised pineapple and passion fruit granita. It was light and
refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness. Dessert then
arrived - baked Cambridge cream (the original crème brûlée!) with
strawberries, white chocolate and a fresh strawberry jus. On a hot
summer’s day, this was spot on. As August sees strawberries at their
prime, the sweetness added a real kick to the creaminess of the
Cambridge cream.
All in all, if you’re looking for a stunning lunch location or perhaps
somewhere to enjoy an evening of fine dining, look no further than
Sheene Mill. It’s also recently added an 8-course taster menu to its
offerings, which has already proven to be very popular. At just £55,
this is exceptionally reasonable and means it doesn’t just have to be
a special occasion dinner. When it does come to special occasions
or weddings however, its team is more than happy to cater to your
needs. “We offer a range of bespoke dining options depending on
what you’re looking for. From BBQs and hog roasts, to canapés and
tasting menus, we are very open,” Lee told us.
Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
The jungle book
Director: Jon Favreau
Stars: Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba
Release Date: 22nd August
In this, the first of two live action adaptations of Rudyard Kipling’s
stories in two years, Jon Favreau has managed to simultaneously
breathe new life into Disney’s classic 1967 animation and remain
– at times weirdly – true to its happy go lucky nature. Although
Favreau largely plays it straight, and at times this is a dark and
serious foray into Kipling’s world, the beloved songs from Disney’s
version remain largely intact and, aided by some spectacular
visuals and fun dialogue, the pace rarely sags. The Jungle Book is
an impressively well rounded film, and is likely to delight adults and
youngsters alike.
Doctor Strange
Directors: Scott Derrickson
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Release Date: 28th October
Just in time for Halloween arrives Doctor Strange, the Marvel
Universe’s Sorcerer Supreme, and arguably the weirdest of their
stable of comic book properties to be granted a film (next to
Guardians of the Galaxy). Doctor Strange has often been defined by
the kaleidoscopic visual weirdness of his early, Steve Ditko illustrated
comics and it remains to be seen whether Scott Derrickson -
director of Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose - will be
able to bring this to life. Benedict Cumberbatch is an admittedly
obvious choice of lead, who will nonetheless bring his usual brand of
enigmatic aloofness to Stephen Strange, a former neurosurgeon who
is granted fantastic powers after a horrifying car accident.
wild beasts
Release Date:
5th August
Wild Beasts have always
seemed a group for whom
the term ‘Indie Rock’ is
grossly misused. Although
it’s hard to think of a
more suitable category
– at least without
getting a little out there
– their inventiveness
and variety has always
been at odds with some
of their immediate
contemporaries. Boy King
continues in this vein,
opening with the sparse
arrangements and low key
synths of Big Cat. Those
expecting a ‘big’ sound
might be disappointed,
but the immediate, funky
Get My Bang is a good
choice of early single,
with its wonky synths and
distorted vocals.
Ourburystedmunds
Velvet celebrates with
organisers of the Bury
St Edmunds Food
and Drink Festival,
Ourburystedmunds, to
discover this year’s delicious
line up for all to enjoy
The food and drink scene in Suffolk
grows in popularity every year, and at the
centre of all the foodie activity is the Bury
St Edmunds Food and Drink Festival.
Promising some of the best tastes, sights
and smells from across the region, the
festival is expected to be even bigger and
better than previous years.
For the cooking
enthusiast
The Aga Rangemaster Theatre Kitchen will
be the best place to catch all the cookery
action over the weekend. On Sunday 28th
August, expect mouthwatering dishes
from chef-patron of Michelin-starred
Morston Hall, Galton Blackiston. Following
Galton, catch TV chef and restauranteur
James Tanner, on Bank Holiday Monday,
cooking up a range of tasty dishes using
seasonal, local produce.
As well as the celebrity chefs, some of the
town’s top cooks will be taking to the stage
to showcase the culinary skills and flavours
from their own restaurants. They include,
Palmers Coffee Shop; Mediterraneaninspired
dishes from Casa del Mar; Maison
Bleue, one of the UK’s top ten fine dining
restaurants; Thai cuisine from Giggling
Squid; traditional Suffolk tastes from Ben’s
restaurant and exquisite dishes from new
boutique hotel, The Northgate.
For the tasters
It wouldn’t be a food and drink festival
without a top selection of delicacies to try
and buy, and this year’s foodie treats will
definitely not disappoint!
Angel Hill will host a Farmers’ Market
featuring 30 local producers. From
locally-sourced honey, seasonal fruit and
vegetables to traditional sauces, there will
be something to tickle all taste buds. There
will also be a market at the Buttermarket
and Cornhill for more treats and gifts.
for the little ones
There’s always plenty to keep the kids
amused during the festival. This year
there’s a mini-farm, fairground rides,
stilt walker, a magician, a Mad Hatter’s
Tea Party - the list simply goes on! The
Ourburystedmunds beach will also return,
where you can enjoy a stick of rock or tub
of ice cream as you watch the Punch and
Independent Cambridge
Retail
inside the city of
Cambridge
We spoke with a few of the best
independent shops and businesses
in Cambridge to learn about their
success in the city
Amongst the historic and beautiful University colleges, greens, commons and cobbled
streets, Cambridge is also home to a flourishing scene of independent shops and businesses.
We spoke to Becky Burrell who champions the independents of Cambridge at the Business
Improvement District (BID), told us, “Cambridge is a beautiful city with a stylish and diverse
range of independent shops, making the experience unique and individual. It’s a fantastic
place to potter around and discover a delightful array of interesting boutiques all located in a
compact, beautiful historic centre. Whether you’re looking for clothes, shoes, accessories or
food, the independent scene in Cambridge has it all to offer. We also have a 7-day market in
the city, with over 200 independent traders who, throughout the week, offer everything you
could imagine, adding to the charm of the city.”
1. Harriet Kelsall
This bespoke jewellery business began on Harriet Kelsall’s kitchen
table in 1998. Since then HK Jewellery has had huge success,
opening the Cambridge branch, located on Green Street, in
2005. This independent retailer, which won ‘Bridal Jewellery
Retailer of the Year’ at the UK Jewellery Awards, is also a business
which promotes ethical and environmental responsibility .“The
jewellery industry doesn’t have a particularly good reputation
when it comes to ethics,” Tom Wilson, a designer at HK Jewellery
told us, “but we’re proud to have played our part in launching
Fairtrade gold and helping it to become established in the UK
jewellery industry.”
The business is made up of a team of 35 who can provide jewellery
repairs, redesign and custom made jewellery, which, as Tom
explained, is all “made locally in the company’s Hertfordshire
workshop.” This ensures that each piece of jewellery is unique and
made specifically for the customer. According to founder Harriet
Kelsall, “The mix of people in Cambridge is wonderful and we
never know who will come in next. We have designed rings based
on customer life stories inspired by subjects as diverse as DNA,
ocean beds, a Mobius twist, a doodle and much more. It’s hard to
imagine people more inspiring to work with.”
2. Modish
Modish is a ladies footwear store, one of the country’s top 100
footwear businesses according to The Guardian. This highly
successful and trustworthy shoe shop, located on Green Street
in the city centre, is owned and run by Sarah Decent. “I really
love being based in Green Street”, Sarah told us. “We’ve now
got such an amazing collection of shops and restaurants, almost
all independent, but because we’re slightly off the beaten track,
Green Street is a relative oasis of calm in the busy city.”
What makes her business so popular is not just its location. Sarah’s
emphasis on quality and comfort is crucial to her business. Unlike
so many other retailers, she places this on par with aesthetic
considerations. Sarah tries and tests each shoe design herself
to ensure they are worth her customers’ time and money. As a
result, shopping for a pair of shoes at Modish is an easier process
than normal, because comfort and durability are guaranteed
by the owner. The shoes are still à la mode and wide-ranging in
design. Sarah stocks popular brands like Fly, Geox and Skechers,
alongside Italian and Spanish shoes made by little-known
designers.
3. Hurst Park Dental
Hurst Park Dental is a private practice on Hurst Park Avenue, just
off Milton Road. This well-established dental clinic offers a wide
range of treatments alongside general dentistry, including dental
implants, cosmetic dentistry and invisalign braces. The practice
is run by a highly experienced team. Along with the nursing and
admin team, Max Leslie, Dominic Flanagan, Andra Udrea and
Laura Hughes offer general dentistry whilst Laura also offers
aesthetics and Stephen Nicoll works with implant patients. The
team is dedicated to offering their patients the highest quality
care, as the practice has five well-equipped treatment rooms and
a state-of-the-art clean room. At all points during the process,
patients are encouraged to have regular checks ups with the
dentist or an appointment with the practice’s hygienist in order to
stop the development of major dental problems.
The practice offers this care at competitive prices. Free
consultations are also available to patients interested in dental
implants, invisalign clear braces or those given a referral for root
canal treatment. “We are really lucky to have our practice so close
to Cambridge’s beautiful city centre. It’s steeped with history and
interesting people and patients,” Dr Laura Hughes told us.
4. Cambridge Cookery School
Cambridge Cookery School. opened in 2008 and five years
later, in 2013, won the title of “Best UK Cookery School”. It’s
recently added both a bakery and Scandinavian-style café to the
school. Not only is the business dedicated to good teaching but
has a strong ethos around food and sustainability. “Cambridge
customers know and seek out good food,” Tine Roche explained,
“I think our ethos of local, fresh, seasonal and ethical has gone
down particularly well.” They work with local organic estate,
Croxton Park, so that their produce is seasonal, local and
good quality.
Its success is also down to the wide variety of classes the school
offers to children, teens and adults alike. As well as participants
in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, “Our visitors range from
companies seeking a high octane cookery event” to “people
enjoying classes in bread making, fish filleting and perfect pastry,”
Tine told us. As a result, Tine said, the school has ‘a loyal following’
with “people attending our classes, sending us their children and
teens to learn to cook and gifting it to older family members.”
Weddings
TO LESS STRESS
Yes there is a stress-free way to source the perfect items for your wedding…
Weddings can be daunting. Today, we’re
lucky to be able to do a quick weddingrelated
search on the internet, giving us
links to millions of shops, company websites
and blogs. You can head into your local town
or city and find boutiques, formal wear and
florists dotted all over the place. It’s all out
there, which is great, but isn’t the prospect
of running from shop to shop, emailing
ten different florists, calling six separate
photographers overwhelming?
The Newmarket Wedding Show this
September offers a calmer experience. It’s
an event held in the Millennium Grandstand
building at the Rowley Mile Racecourse.
It displays the best of local companies and
suppliers for you and your wedding. Food
and entertainment are provided, and the
show enables you to talk to professionals
face to face and gain expert advice on
everything from bridal wear to cupcakes.
With this all in one location, the show is an
easier and more relaxing way to source and
book everything and anything you need for
your wedding. Rather than spending hours
scouring through websites or going around
town, the event’s Bridal Gallery gives you a
chance to see 30 dresses from 10 different
designers side by side in one room. Lara B,
Rachel Lamb Design and Honeys Bridal
are just a few of the dress boutiques at the
show this year.
The show is not only a place to find the
perfect venue or the perfect dress.
The exhibitors also offer you ideas and
inspiration, a chance to immerse yourself
in the world of weddings. The Inspiration
Room gives you the opportunity to envision
how your wedding could come together.
Different displays show how companies can
work together, so you can see, for example,
how the stationery works with the flower
arrangement. Colour schemes created by
the Newmarket Wedding Show are available
to see on their Pinterest, and are well worth
checking out.
This show offers you a chance to find that
dress, that suit, to find inspiration and
to find some calm amidst the wedding
madness. Free to attend, save the
date - Sunday 4th September - for The
Velvet gets excited about a summer evening of cocktails
We all look forward to the summer...
With later evenings, warmer (well, a little
warmer) weather and the approaching
holidays at home or abroad, it’s a time
to celebrate and relax. Yet sometimes,
the thought of upcoming birthdays,
celebrations and big events we have
planned aren’t as exciting as they should
be. Nights out can feel monotonous,
following the same pattern each time.
Planning an event itself is often more
anxiety-inducing than fun.
This summer, one event promises to bring
back that buzz that should accompany any
party. On Friday 26 August at 7pm, a Pop
up Party, set up by Inge Louise Events,
has a unique evening in store, filled with
live music, botanical cocktails and good
food. Hosted in St Peter’s Church in
Stetchworth, down a small rural road in a
picturesque village close to Newmarket,
the venue itself will give the evening a
different and more exciting atmosphere.
There will be food provided by Smokeworks
food truck, a street food eatery based in
Cambridge, botanical cocktails and live
funk and R&B music provided by Bad Girls
Groove Band. For a safe journey home or
to continue your night out, a shuttle bus is
also at the event to provide transport into
Cambridge and Newmarket.
The party doesn’t just promise a
fun, relaxing evening, but is also an
opportunity to help you begin planning
and getting inspired for your own future
events. Whether you have an upcoming
anniversary, birthday or just want a good
night out, local events suppliers will be at
the Pop up Party to chat to you about any
ideas, thoughts or concerns you have.
“I have a great passion for supporting local
event talent and believe that the only way
to experience the ability of event suppliers
is to experience them first hand,” Inge
told us.
Some of the suppliers at the event will
include Elizabeth Hall Event Design, who
will be styling the church, and Inge Louise
Event Bar who will providing a botanical
cocktail bar. It’s also a good idea to keep
an eye out for future Inge Louise Pop up
Parties which will continue to showcase
different events suppliers. All of this will
be done whilst also providing donations to
charities in the local community. At this
particular Pop up Party in August, part of
the profit raised will be given to the venue
itself, St Peter’s Church, to help with the
restoration work that needs to be done.
Tickets are £22, well worth it and available
online through Facebook or Eventbrite.
Come along to an evening which gives
you a chance to meet new people, meet
suppliers and meet the cocktail bar...
Diamonds
Coveted as the new neutral, the brown
‘chocolate’ diamond is popping up
everywhere right now. “We have seen
that the summer trend for blushes and
nudes is perfectly suited for brown
cognac diamonds, as this rich colour
gem stone works particularly well
alongside the fashionable metal of the
moment, rose gold. The timeless colour
suits vintage-inspired designs, making it
the perfect stone for customers wanting
Autumn at Angela
This autumn, Angela has two recently added brands that
are perfect for renewing your wardrobe for the change
in season. Goat, founded by designer Jane Lewis in
2001, is a British brand offering signature luxury and
carefully designed clothing. Angela will have a capsule
Goat Marcelle
collection of dresses which promise understated
Dress, £540
elegance and sleek style. Each item of clothing at the
brand is individually tailored and crafted to the highest
standards using the finest materials. Jane Lewis’ brand
distinguishes itself as having a truly British style, being classic, but going a little beyond
the conventional. This dress, alongside others in the collection, will hang comfortably in
the wardrobes of women whose style demands a little something out of the ordinary.
Also worth a look is Marella, which arrived at Angela last summer. This is a brand with a
contemporary feel to suit a modern lifestyle. Set up in 1976, it updates its silhouettes,
materials and colours every season to keep up with trends. Marella offers easy-to-wear
Ladies Day, Moët & Chandon
July Festival, Newmarket Racecourses
what the
winners wore
Take a look at what the winners of
this year’s Style Awards at Ladies Day
were wearing
This year, Ladies Day attracted a record-breaking number of people
to Newmarket’s sunny Adnams July Course, all of whom were
dressed to impress. The Style Awards, sponsored by The Spa at
Bedford Lodge Hotel, received over 1500 applications, all chasing
the fantastic prizes on offer for the Best Dressed Lady.
Jemma Holloway, 33, from Bury St Edmunds, was crowned ‘Best
Dressed Lady’ wearing a stunning silver sequin top and mesh skirt
from Bury St Edmunds’ boutique, Javelin. Her fabulous hatinator
was from none other than Racing Hat Hire in Newmarket, and
her navy heels were from Marks and Spencer. Winning an amazing
array of prizes worth over £8,000, Jemma proves that high street
is the way.
“I’m completely in shock that I won! As usual, I left my outfit till
the very last minute. I found the hat from Racing Hat Hire in
Newmarket, and knew it was for me. I then visited my friend Kate
at Javelin, and she helped me put the outfit together. I finished the
look with a navy clutch from Accessorize and shoes from M&S,”
Jemma told us. “I’ve been racing a few times with my friends, but
this is the first time I’ve entered a competition like this. We’ve had
a great day and this has just topped it off. I never in a million years
thought this would happen to me, it’s amazing!”
Jemma was fortunate enough to win a Recovery Spa Break for
two at The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel, including an overnight
stay, dinner and breakfast as well as a selection of ESPA products,
a gold magnum of champagne courtesy of Moët & Chandon, a
bouquet from Tolly’s Flowers, a couture hat to the value of £450,
courtesy of Yvette Jelfs Hats, and an AMG Driving Experience at
Mercedes-Benz World, as well as numerous other fantastic prizes
from Vamp London, Rigby & Peller, Hobbs, Fairfax & Favor, Hotel
Chocolat, The National Horseracing Museum and the Beautiful
Mind Series.
Runner-up was Lucinda Bennett, who wore a gorgeous green dress
from Karen Millen and a headpiece also from Racing Hat Hire. “I
wanted something that stood out, so I was immediately drawn to
the green and the height of the hat which was designed by Michelle
the perfect match. I then accessorised with bronze Topshop shoes
and a brown leather Gucci bag. I picked green because it goes well
with my skin tone and eyes, and I also love bold colours,” Lucinda
explained.
Lucinda also received a gold magnum of champagne courtesy
Third place went to Liz Akroyd, who wore a dress by Spanish
designer, Carla Ruiz, and then had her hat specifically tailored to
suit. We love the bold floral pattern and the exquisite coordination
of the colours in her hatinator. “The hat was made bespoke by
Funky Fascinators. I liked the look as it gave an elegance to summer
In Her Shoes
Velvet steps into Nicola Sexton’s shoes to see what the
life of a designer and boutique owner looks like...
This month we caught up with Nicola, owner
of Nicola Sexton, to see what designing
your own label and managing a successful
boutique involves.
“I’m in the shop most days, other than
during design periods and wholesale season.
I go to Micam in Milan to do my buying for
footwear. It’s a massive show, so I have to be
extremely organized in deciding which brands
I want to view. I’m always on the lookout
for something new to bring back to the UK,
so other than making appointments with
existing brands, I have to make time to scour
the aisles for other designers which catch my
eye. This is usually how I approach my buying.
I don’t go looking for certain designs or styles
as such, it’s all about what catches my eye as
I walk past,” Nicola
told us.
This year, Nicola has started stocking key
pieces of clothing. It’s been a real hit with
her customers, and it’s a great way for them
to get their hands on brands that are not
available locally. “I was lucky enough to have
been approached by Salsa, and have been
overwhelmed with the success of the brand
since I started stocking it March.” Nicola
explained. If you’re not already familiar with
the jeans she would recommend you call in
and try some, a higher waist band to smooth
out those ‘muffin tops’ and a lift in the rear...
perfect! They’ve also got some fantastic
tops in an array of colours and styles, which
have already become a favourite with many
customers. Nicola also stocks Extenzo Paris,
American brand Bailey 44, Access and
Genese London.
“The same principle applies to buying
clothing as it does for footwear. As we are
extremely limited on space, other than our
key pieces from Salsa, any other brands have
to really catch my eye,” Nicola continued.
“The trouble is that a lot has been catching
my eye and we just don’t have the room
in store. I have to be very disciplined!” she
laughed.
Nicola attends buying shows in both London
and New York, which she coincides with her
wholesale show at Sole Commerce.
Nicola is fortunate enough to take trips
A typical week for Nicola during the design season
Nicola Sexton
33 Abbeygate Street, Bury St
Edmunds, IP33 1LW
Tel: 01284 760011
www.nicolasexton.co.uk
Nicola gave us a quick insight into
what her recent week away in Italy
designing for S/S17 looked like.
Sunday: 6am flew out to Italy.
Drive to area near factory. Little bit of
retail therapy, and dinner, early night
after a 3:30am start.
abroad fairly often. “I love travelling. If we
start at the beginning of the year, I will be out
in Spain and Italy twice in January, starting
the design processes for A/W, then I also
attend Milan, New York and Dublin footwear
shows, wholesaling my Nicola Sexton
and Sachelle Couture by Nicola Sexton
in February/ March,” Nicola mentions.
June is also a busy month for her, she told
us. “Usually I’m back in Spain and Italy to
start designing for spring/summer for the
following year.” If this wasn’t enough, around
August/September time, Nicola is back
out in Milan, New York, and Dublin for the
wholesale shows again! Alongside this, Nicola
also exhibits her collections four times a year
in London and twice a year in Birmingham! It
really is non-stop.
Alongside travelling, designing, buying and
exhibiting, Nicola also processes all of the
orders she takes on the wholesale side of the
business. ‘“As my brand name is my name,
it’s become a very personable business. The
customers expect to see me at the shows,
as I have taken the orders. I have to follow
the whole process right through to the final
delivery, although, demand is increasing to
such an extent that this is no longer feasible,”
Nicola explains. Nicola admits her biggest
failing within her business is delegating, but
is now at the point she has no choice... it’s
a very difficult concept for her to learn!
“My daughter Charlie has now become an
invaluable part of the team, not only at the
shows, by writing orders and helping with
merchandising, but also within the store
on the shop floor; it’s lovely to see the
customers now reacting with her,” she said.
As Nicola heads into the wholesale season
for S/S17, she welcomes on board a new
face. “Georgia is already proving to be
a valuable member of our team. Whilst
Georgia is on the shop floor, she’s also
beavering away behind the scenes, giving me
the confidence to hand over a proportion of
the administration…” Nicola told us.
Monday: Designing! A long day
in the factory from 8am through to
6pm. Back for a sauna, room service
and bed.
Tuesday: Designing again. 9am
at the handbag factory working on
matching handbags for shoes and
even began looking at a range of belts
for the coming season. Back at the
hotel, a quick bit of dinner and in bed
by 9pm.
Wednesday: My birthday! Up at
5am catching up with emails from the
past two days. Back to the factory
finalising designs. A couple hours at
3.00pm around the pool, then out for
dinner with Charlie to celebrate my
birthday, a lovely evening!
Thursday: A day off. Up at 5am
checking emails, and catching up with
the UK, but by the pool by 9.30 am...
Do not disturb!
Friday: Up at 5am again catching
up with yesterday’s emails. Rest of the
day by the pool and flew home that
evening, landing at a cold Stansted at
7.30 pm.
Saturday: 9am back in store for a
busy day. 6pm home to unpacking and
washing. Such a glamorous life!
SUNDAY: A catch up day! More
washing and ironing and a few hours
in the office. Lunch with the girls and
my parents. A quick trip to the gym in
the evening, but let’s be honest, I only
visited the sauna! And so it all starts
again tomorrow!
Fashion Forecast
Martha, owner of Newmarket’s fashion boutique
Fashion
Veromia:
Dress Code
Martha V, gives us an insight into what’s going
to be big for A/W16
“I’m really excited to welcome our A/W collection into the store.
There are lots of lovely bits from our leading labels like Betty
Barclay and Joseph Ribkoff, as well as a fantastic new range from
Veromia’s ‘Dress Code’ collection. It’s the first time we’ve bought
into this brand and I can’t wait for our customers to see it. When
it comes to picking new collections for the season, I’m very
much guided by our customers and what they’re looking for. It’s
great to be able to offer such a variety of leading brands here in
Newmarket,” Martha tells us.
Soft blues and darker indigos were big on the catwalk from
designers such as Temperley London and Antonio Berardi, and
Martha has lots of these shades on offer. “I adore this beautiful
navy dress with feathered bell sleeves from Veromia’s Dress
Code range. It’s a bit different from your usual shift dress, and
it’s a really flattering cut. We’ve also got a stunning greyish blue
chiffon jumpsuit from this collection too.”
Metallic hues were another hit with designers such as Stella
McCartney. “Golds and silvers have always been popular and
that’s certainly not changing this season. I’ve got quite a few
bits with subtle shimmers. This striped shirt from Betty Barclay
will definitely be popular. Stripes aren’t going anywhere, and the
metallic detailing on this isn’t too overpowering. Joseph Ribkoff
have also got plenty of metallic pieces too,” Martha continues.
Martha is also looking forward to welcoming a selection of tweed
jackets from Tinta, a Spanish designer. “They come in a selection
of baby blues and soft pinks, and the velvet trims on them are
very on trend. Velvet
has certainly made
a comeback. We’ve
not seen it for a good
ten years!” Martha
Antonia Berardi
explains. “Alongside these, we’ve got a selection of jeans from
FDJ, a Canadian designer, which always go down well. My
customers also love pieces from Estheme Cachemire who have
got some lovely knits with velvet button detailing. Other things
you should look out for are the lightweight down jackets from
Taifun, and a variety of LeComte knitwear, which is fast becoming
a favourite label. I also have to mention a reversible waterfall
waistcoat from Betty
Barclay. It comes in two
different lengths depending
on your height, but it’s very
elegant, and I know it will fly
off the rails!”
On 17th August, Martha is
welcoming her customers
into the store to showcase
Joseph Ribkoff’s new range
for Autumn. “We will have
a model here, along with
the brand’s representative
Susan Blatt. It will be a
great day for anyone who
is looking to explore the
brand’s collection for the
upcoming season,” Martha
confirms.
Lunch with girlfriends
For a standard ladies lunch, comfort and chicness are my main
priorities. I will definitely bare my shoulder for the last time this
season and happily announce it to all, hoping that we can finally
turn a page and bow out of this trend that has taken over our
last six months and declare the new tip of the month. To do so
there is no better classic piece than this Lanvin satin
top in deep night blue. Paired jeans, bangles,
studs, key accessories and signature sandals,
you will set the tone to this relaxed yet
elegant look which can take you from
lunch to disco in just one twirl.
Celebration Party
Decide to embrace the chic and oh so very polished look. A
quarter length skirt with an over exaggerated ruffled taffeta
hem is very tongue in cheek. It provides elegance with a
humorous twist. You can then take it a step further by dressing
it up with chic fringed open toe heels and a humorous logo
clutch. The costume jewellery provides
a more relaxed twist to what could be a
straight-laced look. Now
grab a bellini or two and
enjoy the peachy
syrup kick...
Dinner with a Loved One
An evening out with that special
person in your life must be defined
by the coolest outfit of them all. We
are no longer talking first dates,
where impressing has required your
upmost fashion creativity effort all
round. In my case I will be strolling
down a London pavement heading
hand in hand with my big adventure
to our favourite dinner spot. For this
great occasion, I will always chose
an outfit which is open to any last
Concerts have the power of energising
you for weeks. For such a fun and vigorous
occasion, comfort is paramount… a small
sparkle of disco is also a must!
In this occasion I have emphasised the
current metallic mood by finding a sheer
metallic dress with very fine and feminine
straps… a joy from Topshop!
I will accessorise it with
fun and easy pieces of
embellish the look with a
relaxed twist rather than
taking it too seriously.
Once your tan has developed, the following
Sun-Damaged Locks
Too much sun can leave our hair
lacklustre, dry and damaged. This
month, we asked Lucy Seeley, of
Lucies Hair Boutique, Newmarket,
for her top advice and product
suggestions.
“Reduce the heat. Give
your hair dryer a break
and try to go au natural if
you can. Work the beach
waves with Alterna’s
Summer Ocean Waves, the
best styling product for the
summer! Keep your hair
loose, as a sleek hair style
will only highlight the
frizz; a messy braid will
look great and minimise
your hair’s exposure to the
sun. Spritz with Alterna’s
Summer Spray Recovery,
a leave-in conditioner that
revitalises sun-parched
hair. Prevention is always
better than cure, so have
a trim before your holiday
and wear a hat.”
nail it
This month, Velvet catches up with Theresa Foddering,
Beauty
AKA The Nail Dresser, owner of A Revolution, to talk all things nails
What do you predict the top trend
for A/W16 to be?
Chrome and metallic nails are currently
trending, but in fact I don’t think they ever
went away. You can never have enough
bling! A/W16 will see deep colours coming
through, like blood reds and aubergine.
It’s looking very decadent and mysterious,
with slender softer shapes.
Sneak peek into next year?
Definitely prepare for exotic rainforest
inspiration going into next summer and I’m
pleased to say the stiletto nail is here to
stay! French will be making a comeback,
but not as you know it...
What styles and colours do you
think never date?
Red will never date. It is the ultimate
glamour go-to colour. It doesn’t matter if
your nails are long or short, a crisp ‘power
red’ is perfect. Similarly with nudes - there
is a broad spectrum for nude and it’s a
colour that will go with any outfit. Nude
can always be jazzed up with metallic
flashes or glitter ombres for those that are
more adventurous.
What is your best tip for keeping your
nails strong and healthy?
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
Dryness in nails and surrounding skin will
cause them to become brittle and split.
Oh and it’s a wives tail that calcium makes
them strong! Wear gloves when doing any
household cleaning, preventing chemicals
that cause damage and the biggest sin
of them all... Do NOT pick off your nail
coatings! This removes layers of your nails
that cannot be replaced until it grows out.
What is your favourite nail brand to
work with and why?
I’m a huge fan of all products CND®, a
professional brand available in salons. Both
my salons are CND partners so I’m a little
biased, but they are not the global leader in
the industry for no reason.
CND® Shellac® is by far my favourite
Gel Polish brand. It’s long-wearing, with
zero nail damage and a huge choice of
colour and finishes. Recently I’ve been
fortunate to work on a project with OPI.
I’m impressed with the glossy finish of their
polishes and the drying time has massively
improved from years ago.
What is your hero product?
CND Solar Oil®! It’s an absolute musthave
for natural nails, Gel polish wearers
and even those with enhancements. It’s a
deeply nourishing oil, that with repetitive
application (just a tiny bit) will boost nail
health, growth and even the longevity of
nail coatings. Sometimes I even use it as a
rescue oil on those stubborn dry patches
like elbows.
Who is your Instagram nail crush?
Where do you look for inspiration?
Everyone knows I LOVE @getbuffednails.
Check her out, she’s definitely a go-to for
the nail art lover. Sarah’s work is amazing
and a constant inspiration to me.
What is your go-to nail colour?
That’s a tricky one, as it changes with the
seasons. At the moment I’m loving coral,
pastel and bright. But thinking ahead, I
can’t wait to get using the moody blood
reds for the autumn.
My Holiday Empties
(and Almost Empties!)
After a sun-drenched week in Greece, take a look at the empty
Beauty
bottles I left behind, and the almost empty ones I brought back…
1. Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture Daily Shampoo
and Super-Charged IntenseTreatment
A duo which is great for adding moisture and
reviving my sun-exposed hair. It also combats
frizz and makes my hair super shiny.
2. Charles Worthington Leave-In
UV-Protection Spray
This was by far my hair saviour! I sprayed
through my whole hair first thing and reapplied
at midday. It stopped my hair drying out and
protected it from any unwanted damage.
3. Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist
This is great for spritzing on whenever you need
a quick refresh. It’s also incredibly soothing and
works well post-cleanse to lock in hydration.
4. Estée Lauder Enlighten Even Effect Skintone
Corrector
I’m not a huge fan of wearing make up in the
evenings on holiday, but this is a really hydrating
tinted cream which offers flawless, yet naturallooking,
coverage with a subtle glow.
5. Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50
Having sensitive skin is never ideal, but I always
make sure I use a high factor face cream whilst
on holiday. This lightweight formula suits my
skin perfectly.
6. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Nourishing
Lip Balm
Dry cracked lips are never a good look. This
nourishing balm from Elizabeth Arden leaves
lips feeling hydrated and protected with
SPF20.
7. Clarins Sun Care Oil Spray UVB/UVA 30
This dry oil spray is a fantastic all-rounder.
Offering high protection for both the skin and
hair, it’s also water resistant and doesn’t leave
any greasy residue.
8. Clinique After-Sun Rescue Balm
This moisturising after-sun contains aloe vera
which makes it really soothing and calming. I
pop mine in the fridge and apply in the evening.
9. Nuxe Sun After-Sun Hair & Body Shampoo
This is another great all-rounder for post-sun
exposure. I use in the shower to wash off any
remaining sun cream, chlorine or sand!
Written by Sammi Nice
10. Lancaster Sun Beauty Melting Tanning
Milk SPF15
A ‘milky’ formula which offers easy application
and smells divine.
Gemma Treby pays a visit to
Lucy Seeley to reinvigorate her
hairstyle
Before
Since opening at the start of 2016, I’ve heard great
things about Lucie’s Hair Boutique, so I was excited
to visit the salon for a hair refresh. Over the last few
months I have lived with hair that I have not been
happy with, so I was looking forward to visiting Lucy
Seeley, owner of the salon, for styling advice and to
get my luscious, long hair back!
After sitting down, I had a hair consultation with
Lucy. Lucy advised me on some products to use
and she suggested that I have my hair extensions
removed as well as a colour correction and cut. As
soon as I entered the salon, I felt in safe hands. Lucy
and the team were very welcoming and made me
feel comfortable and excited about my new look!
My appointment began with the task of removing
the applied hair extensions, which had to be done as
delicately as possible so as not to damage my own
hair. Although time-consuming, the experience was
made all the more pleasant by Lucy’s professional
nature and all the friendly faces in the salon that
day; while I was there, many of my friends popped in
for a quick blow dry or a colour re-fresh!
Next was my colour correction. Using the balayage
technique to give a natural light to dark fade, Lucy
appeared to go through the process with confidence
in her skill and ability.
Once the colour was washed off, Lucy was faced
with the task of cutting my hair back into a style. We
decided to go for a simple, elegant cut followed by a
sleek blow dry.
It’s only since going through the experience of
having terrible hair that I’ve realised how important
nice hair is to me (first world problems, I know …!). I
had always taken my long thick hair for granted, but
this experience has shown me to really appreciate
my hair in its natural glory. Now, thanks to Lucy,
hopefully it won’t be too long until my hair has
grown back and its fullness is restored.
protect your
colour
Velvet visits Exning’s newest
salon to try hair strengthening product, colorpHlex
I have my hair coloured about four times a
year, so I understand the constant struggle
with brittle and weak ends. When I heard
that local salon, SimplyHair, was offering
the new colorpHlex product, I was excited
to learn what the treatment involved and
to see the results.
Since Charlotte purchased SimplyHair in
January 2016, it has gone from strength
to strength.
“ColorpHlex is
an engineered
remedy, made
with an organic
protein”
Offering
a range of
services
from Ombré
colour to hair
extensions
and up-dos,
the salon
is a friendly and welcoming environment
whose expert team boasts years of
experience in the business.
After meeting the girls and learning about
the growth of SimplyHair, it was time
for the treatment. Following a shampoo,
Charlotte’s colleague Vicky applied the
conditioning treatment to my hair, and
let it soak for ten minutes. Whilst the
colorpHlex was working its magic, I asked
Charlotte and Vicky, what it is about
colorpHlex that makes it so special.
“It’s a strengthening product designed to
produce strong and silky hair. It’s a natural
treatment that uses ‘bond builders’ to
attack the damaged areas of your hair
and keep your hair colour fresher for
longer. And it’s not an ‘applied today, gone
tomorrow’ treatment, as it can last up to
six weeks,” Charlotte explained.
“Although colorpHlex is an engineered
remedy, it is made with an organic protein
aimed to give the natural protein in your
hair a little extra help for healthier looking
hair,” continued Charlotte.
Once the ten minutes was up, Vicky
combed and washed the colorpHlex out,
following this with a blow-dry to give my
hair some volume.
Once it was dry, my hair was not only
shiny, silky to touch and smelt gorgeous,
but the colour also looked refreshed, all
thanks to the team at SimplyHair and the
colorpHlex treatment. And the best bit
was, after drying my hair the next morning,
it was still as shiny and soft, proving just
how successful the treatment is.
Trainer top tips
We asked Newmarket personal trainer
and director at The Body Transformation Project,
Tom Harris, for some of his best advice...
Written by Sammi Nice
Fasted or fuelled cardio?
What’s best?
This really depends on the intensity; the
latest research from the British Journal
of Nutrition suggests cardio performed
fasted, i.e in the morning - at low intensity
(a steady jog), can burn up to 20% more
fat during exercise than when a meal
was consumed beforehand. However,
paradoxically, high intensity interval
training (HIIT) which would require a
fuelled state, might be performed for a
shorter duration and might not burn as
many calories from fat for the duration of
the workout, but the metabolic ‘after burn’
effects of HIIT mean that more calories
and fat will be burned during the recovery
process which can last 24 hours or more.
Keep it simple for high intensity a fuelled
steak is best for low intensity it’s not as
important.
If you could take one supplement,
what would it be and why?
Omega 3 from a good quality fish oil
supplement. Unless you eat oily fish
multiple times per week, most people do
not have anywhere near enough Omega
3 in their diet. There is excellent evidence
showing that Omega 3s clear triglycerides
from the blood quickly, which is important
as triglycerides lower your levels of good
(HDL) cholesterol. As such there is a
large body of evidence to suggest that
oily fish, and therefore fish oils, can
help reduce the risk of cardiovascular
disease. Omega 3s are also able to reduce
inflammation, which may be helpful for
people with inflammatory conditions
such as rheumatoid arthritis. Note that
Omega 3s should not be taken in doses
of 3g or larger, and you should always
talk to your doctor before commencing
supplementation.
If you could only choose one piece
of equipment to use, what would it be
and why?
For most people and most goals, a good
set of adjustable dumbbells can provide a
fantastic home workout.
We can perform a very large range of
exercises using dumbbells, but exercising
the whole body using multi-joint
compound exercises such as squats,
lunges, rows and pressing movements
several times a week would be a great
way to start. Skip the crowds at the gym,
get in great shape and save money in the
process!
Health
Stay
Hydrated
With the heat building last month, and the hottest day of the year having
temperatures hitting 35 degrees, it is so important to stay hydrated. Drinking
plenty of water is the ultimate hydration and it is often so that you should drink
before you become thirsty and drink at the onset of hunger, as the body often
mistakes hunger for thirst.
Fruit and vegetable juices, with the most hydrating being watermelon, tomatoes
and lettuce, also contribute to hydration. Be mindful of sports drinks as many
contain high quantities of sugar and caffeine. Reduce your consumption of
caffeine and if you really find water alone uninteresting, add a slice of cucumber,
mint or lemon.
But top of all is milk. Milk releases very slowly into the bloodstream, helping the
body retain fluid for longer. Milk contains a high number of electrolytes, sodium
and potassium, which are lost when sweating. So support our cows and drink milk!
Gym Hair Hack
From stay-put styles to post-gym
hair in a hurry, we thought we’d give
you a quick lowdown on our best hair
hack, the braid. Not only are braids
great for working out, they’re always
great for concealing ‘post-gym hair’
which urgently needs washing. For
the workout braid, opt for a French
plait which is tight to the head.
Alternatively, a loose side plait,
spritzed with dry shampoo, works a
treat for an easy post-workout style
in a hurry. We love this dry shampoo
by Colab. It instantly refreshes and
conceals, without the white residue!
about the benefits
of staying hydrated
Three Fat Burning
Foods
1. Leafy Greens - They’re great for
boosting your metabolism, and are one
of the most nutritionally dense foods
there are. Try spinach with your eggs
at breakfast, or opt for kale with your
protein at dinner
2. Oily Fish - Not only is it essential
for upping your Omega 3 intake, but
fish, such as wild salmon, can also help
improve your insulin sensitivity, and
up your metabolism which will, in turn,
shrink your waistline.
3. Eggs - They’re low in calories and
high in protein, making them an obvious
choice if you’re looking to trim down.
Eggs are also fantastic at helping to build
or strengthen new muscle tissue.
Why not kill three birds with one stone,
and incorporate all three? Try poached
eggs with smoked salmon and greens for
the perfect fat-burning brekkie!
BE RIO-inSPIRED
Four years after London 2012 and the sporting successes
it brought, the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics are
finally here. Being glued to the TV or the live feeds on our
phones over the next few weeks is looking likely for a lot of us,
determined to follow the victories of our favourite world-class
athletes. However, Rio can also inspire us through the focus,
dedication and passion of the sportsmen and women running,
jumping, wheeling and riding across our screens.
The motto of Rio 2016 is ‘Viva Sua Paixao’ meaning ‘Live your
passion’. It’s much easier than you might think to follow the
spirit of Rio, whether you discover a new sporting or fitness
passion, or try to get back into your lost athletic ways.
Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling:
Health
1. Get running, keep fit, set
your goals
You might not be the next Mo Farah, but
running is a great and easy(ish) way to
keep fit. Greater Cambridge 10K - 10Ks
are a great way to set a goal for yourself
so you can keep motivated on those rainy
days. The Greater Cambridge 10K is taking
place on 11th September at 10.30am at
the West Cambridge Site of the University
of Cambridge Sports Centre.
Chariots of Fire - This relay event, in aid of
Papworth Hospital Charity, is one of the
largest charity events in Cambridgeshire.
Taking place on 18th September, teams
of six sign up to complete a relay course,
where each team member runs a 1.7 mile
course through Cambridge, handing on
the baton to their other team members.
Be sure to sign up before 14th September
to raise money for the wonderful work
done at Papworth Hospital.
Parkruns are a simple way to start running.
These 5K weekly runs take place all over
the UK. Look up one near you at Kesgrave,
Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Brandon,
Cambridge and Great Cornard.
2. You don’t have to be a
gold medallist...
West Suffolk Athletics Club, Bury St
Edmunds, for example, allows anyone to
join. You just have to have the passion and
dedication to train and compete regularly
for the club. Enjoy track and field athletics,
cross country and road racing.
3. On your bike!
If you want to get more active, cycling
is another fantastic way to get fit and (if
possible) get to work! The Suffolk Coast
Cycle Ride is taking place on 7th August,
starting and finishing at Glemham Hall.
Choose to do either a 35 or 65 mile route.
It’s a challenge with some great scenery.
4. Get Rio-inspired and
try something new
Bury Bombers are a wheelchair basketball
club based in Bury St Edmunds. People
of all ages and abilities can become team
members and compete. Or if watersports
are your thing, the Cantabrigian Rowing
Club has upcoming ‘learn to row’ courses.
5. Golf is back!
After 112 years of being out of the
Olympics, golf will now be included along
with the 41 other sporting events this year.
Make it a hole in one and try a bit of golf at
Bury St Edmunds Golf Club, or the Gog
Magog Golf Club in Cambridge. You never
know, you may be a pro!
Health
Adam Prescott, director at Revolution
Fitness Academy, talks to us this month
about all things nutrition and fitness
“In 2016 we find ourselves, for the first time in history, with
a generation of children expected to to be outlived by their
parents. That’s a scary thought,” Adam tells us. Now in his
tenth year as a health professional, Adam tells us more about
his journey so far. “In those almost 10 years, I’ve had all sorts
of people sit in front of me and ask for help. I would love to
have said I have managed to help them all, but I would be lying,
particularly at the start of my career. One thing you have to
quickly learn with the health and fitness industry,” he continues,
“is that it’s full of misinformation, with people often looking in the
wrong place to solve their ‘problem’.”
Adam tells us to take a minute… “Stand back, look around you,
look at your daily routine, social life, supermarkets, work life. How
often do you ‘nutritionally’ move on a daily basis? How many
aisles in your local supermarket can you actually shop in to ‘eat
healthily’ and what effect is your social life having on your health?
Once you clear out all of the misinformation fed to us by the
food industry and other sources, you soon realise that struggling
with health and weight loss is a result of culture. Weight loss, or
more importantly good health, isn’t a mythical deity you have to
pray to and hope that it answers... it’s a mixture of biochemistry
and psychology. With everyone busy on a daily basis, how do we
optimise our health, sieve out the rubbish information, break
habits and learn how to sustain our health?”
Welcome to the only Lifestyle Integration, Health and
Support System...
Revolution Fitness Academy is a system designed to mould
itself around a busy, modern day lifestyle. With 66 semi-private
sessions a week, of which you can go to as many as you want,
your own personal nutrition and access to coach support 24/7, it
does exactly what it says on the tin. It even helps you shop! All of
their members can log into the Members Lounge and order all of
their groceries from local farmers to be delivered to the private
studio ready for pick up, freeing up time for another ‘Rev Fit
Session’. Not only is there a big emphasis on its tailored training
sessions, but nutrition is at the forefront for Adam.
“Most people are aware that nutrition is where the war is won
with health and fat loss. One of my favourite all-time quotes is
‘food can either be the most powerful form of medicine, or the
slowest form of toxin’ - that couldn’t be more true,” he tells us.
Health
“Nutrition is an evolving science. Every year, more researchers
and scientists are learning more about which foods do what to our
bodies. For those of you with high blood pressure, we now know
that the food we eat can improve our blood pressure better than
any medicine. It does make me laugh when hearing people argue
about food, arguing that we should all eat paleo, follow the Atkins
diet, or eat Mediterranean or vegetarian, yet at some point in their
argument they will all state that ‘everyone is different’. So, let’s
enjoy the challenge of being different. Certain eating methods will
suit different people, but we know that everyone needs plenty of
micro and phyto-nutrients. Whilst we find out the specific ratios
of macros for that individual, let’s load up on nutrients to boost our
immune system, improve our skin and smooth bodily functions,”
he says.
“Our nutritional programme starts off for everyone with our ‘10
day System Reboot’. After these 10 days, we can then start an
elimination process to find your personal diet, one that leaves you
buzzing with energy, glowing with health (or sweat, depending on
if you’ve just had a session with one of our coaches), craving free
and still achieving results. Doesn’t that sound yummy?” Adam
concludes. This is just a little insight into the wealth of knowledge
shared between the team at Revolution Fitness Academy. Not
only are they busy training and educating their members, they’ve
also been partaking in lots of other ventures.
“In June this year, we teamed up with school catering company
Edwards and Blake to develop their new ‘optimum’ health food
range for pupils. We then visited the pupils to educate them about
the benefits of high quality nutrition to their performance both
in and out of the classroom. We are incredibly pleased to confirm
that the ‘optimum’ health food range went down very well with the
pupils,” Adam tells us. “Last month, we proudly opened the Bury
St Edmunds Festival of Sport, by challenging the military to three
different workouts in the arc.”
Emily Skinner has completed her initial 4-stone weight loss target and is
still going strong. Head over to their website to see more inspiring journeys.
“Whilst these events were taking place
throughout the day, Rolfe’s butchers, from
Walsham le Willows, were giving out their
tasty organic ‘Revolution meals.’ The Army
and RAF had a climbing wall and Lynx
helicopter in place and much more. All of
this was done to promote the benefits of
healthy living and to raise money for our
two chosen charities, AFSKP and Bright
Colour of the moment...
We’ve seen various shades of green and
mint at the forefront of interiors in the
last couple of years, but this season, these
shades are becoming bolder and brighter.
Add touches of spearmint to your home
with soft furnishings or decorative
accessories. If you’ve already embraced
mint tones on your walls, why not paint
one item of furniture in this bolder shade
or consider a feature wall.
Only a short while ago we were preaching
about the gorgeous look of metallic for
your home, however fickle fashion has
metallic tones in your recent purchases,
you can simply blend in the metallic with
matte for a 2016 update.
Fine Dining
FOR A DECADE
As Klöeber slides into its 10th year in
the industry, we speak to the market
leading glazing solutions manufacturer and
supplier about this milestone, and another
recent achievement they’ve just unveiled
to their customers!
Formed in the September of 2006,
Klöeber UK Ltd launched onto the bespoke
glazing market from a small stand at the
Grand Designs Exhibition in Birmingham. If
we flash forward throughout the years into
2016, Klöeber is now an established, market
leading specialist manufacturer and supplier,
delivering solutions to some of the biggest
names in housing and development across
the UK.
Klöeber’s high-end and modern bespoke
timber glazing products, including their
award-winning FunkyFront door range, are
now regularly used by some of the largest
house builders, developers and builders
merchants in the UK, as well as architects,
contractors, homeowners, self builders and
distributors.
The company has featured on primetime
TV shows such as Grand Designs, DIY
SOS and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces,
where its products and approach have been
heavily showcased to customers across the
board.
This is a special year for Klöeber. The
company is not only celebrating its 10th
anniversary, but has just debuted its all-new
head office and showroom in Huntingdon,
Cambridgeshire.
Elyssa Fagan spoke to Sales Director and
co-owner, Matt Higgs, about this recent
achievement and plans for the future.
Ten years is a huge landmark for
Kloeber, are you feeling proud of
the business’ achievements so far?
The business really is going from strength
to strength. This 10th year comes at an
incredibly buoyant time for us, wherein
we’re looking at expanding and improving in
every possible way.
We’re so proud of what has been achieved
over the past ten years, where we’ve seen
growth in turnover as well as within our
profile and reputation in the marketplace.
Not only this, but we’ve seen an increase
of staff and in our profit growing and
developing year-on-year.
Written by Elyssa Fagan
What would say has been one of your
major achievements over the years?
Klöeber was the first company to
successfully achieve ‘Secured by Design’
membership for our timber bi-folding doors
in the UK. Secured by Design is a national
police project focused on the design and
security for new and refurbished homes,
commercial premises and car parks. To hold
a member company status means we’ve
produced a product that has passed security
standards and tests nominated by the police
service, which demonstrate the product’s
effectiveness in preventing or reducing
crime. We’re extremely proud to be part
of this scheme, and we’re also carrying out
ongoing testing for the wider product range.
All of us at Klöeber fully support the move
towards an industry-wide approach towards
more secure glazing products and reduction
in house burglary.
How are you feeling about this new
move of your head office - and your
all-new showroom?
We’re very excited about the move to
our new showroom! It took three months
of refurbishment of the premises,
formerly known as ‘The Bright Building’, in
Huntingdon, to make it our own, but, as
we’ve just unveiled this to our customers,
we’re excited to hear people’s thoughts.
What does the new, larger
showroom mean to the business?
The prominent position of the landmark
building should make our brand more
recognisable locally, and the larger space
will enable us to deliver our growth plan.
The opportunities for recruitment and
expansion are now increased and we intend
to take full advantage of this.
Where do you see the business going
forward?
The exciting thing for me personally is
that I know Klöeber is still nowhere near to
fulfilling its potential - anything is possible!
Our aim for perfection in everything
we do brings so much opportunity: new
products, new customers and exciting
projects are always just around the corner.
All indications point to the success and
growth continuing into our next decade,
and beyond!
DESIGNING YOUR DIGS
As university start dates approach, we’ve
got some tips from those in the know on
how to make your student space your own
Scion Axis Print Duvet Cover, Scion, www.scion.uk.com
With the prospect of university only a few
weeks away, it’s important that if you’re
heading away for the first time, that you
make your room feel like home. We’ve had
two lovely interns with us at Velvet this
month, Emily Thomas and Emily Denton,
who are both taking a break from their own
time at university. They have put together
some top tips to help you make your digs
your own.
1. You can personalise your room really
easily without spending much money. Put
up photos of family and friends and bring
posters and postcards from your room
at home to stick on the walls. It will make
your room feel less empty, and more your
own.
2. Fairy-lights add a cosy and pretty touch
to your room and are really cheap to
pick up.
3. Storing your bits and bobs in wicker
baskets is a nice homely touch, hides your
clutter and keeps things organised.
4. We both go to University up north
and didn’t realise how cold it would be!
Cushions and throws are a great way to
keep warm, but they’re also great for
adding a bit of pattern and colour to
your room.
5. Living with other people is fun but, let’s
be honest, sometimes you need to adjust
to being all in one area at once. Cooking
smells are especially hard to lose. Most
students aren’t allowed candles in their
rooms so scented diffusers are perfect for
keeping your clothes and bedding smellfree,
if you’re in a smaller area with the
kitchen not too
far away.
There are also decorative additions you
could buy prior to the big university
move, which can bring more personality
to your surroundings. We spoke to two
local experts who gave their opinions on
university room design trends - which will
fit a student budget.
“I suggest looking at the Scion range
for funky abstract designs with a price
conscious rage,” recommends owner of
Copeland Interiors, Clare Hindle. “This
autumn, blues metallics and corals are set
to be the most popular.”
“Bunting and wall flags are an easy way to
transform a room on a budget,” says owner
of Ivy Joan, Hayely Wallis. “Not only do
these textile home accessories modernise
a room very quickly, but they give you the
opportunity to add pops of colour
and character to a space
which is usually quite basic.”
However you decide to
decorate your digs this
year, make sure you feel
comfortable and cosy,
you’ll be returning there
everyday to relax, study
or party!
A Golden Fusion
It is time to add some sparkle and luxury to your
homes with the latest metallic and copper trend
set to inspire interiors this autumn
Although in the midst of summer, it is never too early to start
looking ahead to the trends we are all going to be buying into
come autumn. Based around the copper tones we saw last
fall, the trend continues with metallic and golden tones. Dulux
announced their annual colour as Cherished Gold earlier in the
year and it has been a trend that has been followed all year, not
only through interiors but seen in the fashion world too.
Get set for a more a glamorous play on copper this autumn, with
warm golden tones, just perfect to exude heat in the home as the
temperature drops. One wonderful characteristic of this metallic
trend is that it is remarkably versatile to any colour palette. From
the summer blues to the darker shades of grey, metallic tones will
bring sparkle and luxury to your home.
Rose gold, brass and copper materials, whether this be paint,
wallpaper or home furnishings, are great investments as they
never go out of style and will make your home feel cozy during
chillier months. If you are a little nervous about utilising too many
metallic shades in your home, it is easy to filter through and start
off small, adding touches here and there.
From vases to light shades and mirrors, they can all help to
accessorise your interiors and keep you bang on trend!
As you grow more confident you can start to base a whole room
around just feature pieces, or even repaint your walls in soft
golden tones.
You could brighten up a dull kitchen or bathroom, basing it
around a smooth white interior base tone that will really make the
accessories stand out.
This trend is great to follow if you feel like you want a change for
autumn; it can revitalise a room, making it feel warm and inviting.
A small touch here and there around your home will be sure to
make an impression and ensure you’re going for gold!
A Lap of Luxury
We take the Mercedes-Benz
E 220 on a circuit of Bury St
A Lap of Luxury
Pete Townshend takes the new Mercedes-Benz E 220 on a circuit of Bury St Edmunds
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always been a name associated
with luxury, and its latest offering is certainly no exception. In
fact, this new range is pushing many boundaries and is easily a
class leader when it comes to executive comfort and efficiency.
Styling
From the outside, the new E 220 exudes elegance. Its
combination of smooth curves and sharp lines makes for a look
that is both sophisticated and sporty. The large grille and broad
tail add a feeling of power, but are subtle enough to remain
classy. This quietly confident styling translates beautifully through
to the interior, which has taken many of its cues from its larger
sibling, the S-Class.
As I settled into the plush leather driving seat, the first thing to
strike me was the amount of space available. Mercedes-Benz has
extended the wheelbase by 43mm and overall length by 65mm,
making for a roomier interior, only amplified by the positioning of
the column-mounted automatic gear lever which really opens up
the centre console.
This feeling of open space, coupled with the sleek arcs of the
interior styling, come together to make the cabin a beautiful
place to be. It almost made me feel like I was gazing out across
a magnificent flowing landscape, the natural textures of which
had been replaced with stitched leather and open-pored wood,
accented by understated silvers and minimalist, knurled control
switches. Ok, maybe that was a bit pretentious, but you get my
point: the interior of this car is fantastic!
Tech
Upon firing up the engine, the next thing to notice (and it’s hard
not to) is the whopping 12.3-inch multi-media screen, set neatly
into the sweeping dash, which lights up in all its high-definition
glory. The display is crisp and clear and features all the tech you
could need, including sat nav, cruise control, heated front seats,
dual-zone climate control, LED headlamps and reversing camera
all as standard.
While rotary-wheel and touchpad controls are positioned
easily-to-hand on the centre console, the most notable aspect
of the infotainment system is the Touch Controls on the steering
wheel - the first time they have ever been used in a car. Similar
to a smart phone interface, these allow you to use horizontal
and vertical thumb strokes to control the entire system without
taking your hands off the wheel.
Drive
When ready to pull away, it’s easy to forget that the car is even
running, with the all-new four cylinder 2.0-litre turbodiesel
engine letting off a minimal rumble when idle.
As I shuffled the E 220 out of the car park, its impressive
manoeuvrability became apparent, with a surprisingly tight
turning circle for a car of this size.
The Mercedes-Benz glided its way through Bury’s tight streets
with composure and elegance - its steering was quick to respond
and its soft suspension ironed out the rough road surfaces to
provide a smooth and comfortable ride. However, it was when
I hit the open road and reached cruising speed that the E 220
really came into its own.
Squeezing my foot to the floor saw the 9-speed automatic
transmission move smoothly through the gears. So smooth,
in fact, that I was surprised when I looked down to see how
fast I was travelling. At high speeds the suspension performs
excellently, while the low 1,300 rpm at 70mph and slick
aerodynamics make for a relaxed and peaceful experience.
Efficiency
When it comes to emissions, the E 220 is a leader in its class at
102g/km. This level of efficiency has previously only been possible
for significantly smaller vehicles. Couple that with fuel economy
at 72.4mpg, and you’ve got a clear winning combination that is
not only easy on the environment, but easy on your wallet too!
Verdict
For me, this latest offering from Mercedes-Benz combines the
perfect ingredients to create one of the best cars of its type. It is
almost inaudibly quiet, supremely luxurious, cheap to run, packed
with tech and offers suspension that, although not the sportiest,
provides a ride that is so smooth you’d be forgiven for forgetting
your wheels are touching the ground at all!
This is the car that knows exactly what it needs to do and
achieves it perfectly: comfort, class and efficiency.
