The
Benefits & Drawbacks
Of Both Parents Working
A lot has been said about ideal parenting and one major issue that has
even resulted in divorce is whether both parents should work or not.
While there is a good case for people who think one parent should
remain at home and be the caregiver, a different section of the society
finds it impossible. The most cited reason is the mediocre quality of life
offered when only one parent works compared to when two work.
Currently in America, according to the Census Bureau, 3 out of 5 American
families with children under the age of 18 are employed. This is more
than half the population with underage children. But, the big question
is, is this a good or bad thing?
Here are a few benefits and drawbacks of both parents working.
Benefits
Better Financial Footing
Two-income families enjoy a
better financial footing than
their counterparts. Consequently,
they are less likely to suffer from
financial stress and they get to
enjoy a better and higher standard
of living. The children enjoy better
daycare, private schooling and
great healthcare.
The result is a happy family that
does not stress about basic human
needs and a few luxuries here and
there.
Children are Better Socialized
When both parents are working,
they usually place their children
under the care of other adults.
Eventually, their children learn to
respect higher authority other than
their parents’. Simply put, they are
better socialized.
Daycare exposes these children to
their peers, from whom they learn
how to socialize, make friendships
and solve feuds. By the time these
kids are released on their own, they
normally know how to tolerate
different characters and live in
harmony.
Parents Serve as Motivation
to Children
Children with both working
parents are said to be more active
and independent. In addition to
that, their parents’ achievements
motivate them to work hard and
also make something useful out of
themselves.
Drawbacks
The Children Become
Latchkey Kids
Reportedly, 53% of all children
above the age of 9 in the United
States are latchkey. These kids come
home to no parental supervision
after school, which affects them
in a number of ways. First of all,
their parents are unavailable to
monitor their study. The children
also lack parental encouragement
when taking part in extracurricular
activities. Eventually, some of these
children end up abusing drugs
as their getaway from reality. For
girls, this is coupled with teenage
pregnancy.
Children Fail to Understand the
Foundation of Family
When these kids are asked to
describe what a home is, they will
probably remember to mention
the nanny and forget to mention
their own parents. The foundation
of family is built and cemented
when children are able to share
a relationship with their parents.
Unfortunately, working parents
hardly find time for their children
and instead compensate their
absence with money.
Parents are Filled With Guilt and
Depression
As much as parents will feel happy
that they are giving their children
the best life, they regret that they
are never there to share that life
with them. For example, parents will
work 8-9 hours a day, then catch up
on meetings with business partners
or friends and come home probably
after dinner. By this time, the kids
are usually sleeping and the cycle
repeats itself.
Well, no parent can stand watching
their children struggle in life. If you
must work, then ensure that you find
a balance between work and family.
Have a routine that will at least give
you an hour with your children on
weekdays and undivided attention
over weekends and holidays.
Attraction!
A ROMANCE STORY
PART II
It Avery could not stop her mind
from wondering what it must’ve
been like to kiss Mark. She thought
to herself how absurd it was for her
to be so emotionally involved with
a man that she didn’t even know.
His looks were just that captivating.
Avery then heard the door open
across from her and noticed that
Mark was already done with his
“pit stop.”
“Sorry that took so long,” Mark said
to Avery.
“Seriously, it was no big deal. How
many times do you get to see your
manager make out with a movie
star?” Avery blurted out without
thinking.
Mark surprisingly began laughing.
“You sure know how to get on
my good side don’t you Miss
Anderson?” Mark said mid-laugh.
“I should really start thinking before
I talk… and walk,” she replied.
They continued to laugh and make
small talk about Mark’s directing
career until they reached Avery’s
house.
“Well, this is me. Thanks again for
the ride. I sure hope my car can be
fixed,” Avery said as she began to
get out of the car.
“No problem. If you need a ride
to work tomorrow, you have my
number on the information packets
from today. At least if I take you, I
know you won’t quit on me,” Mark
said jokingly.
“Trust me, I’m not going anywhere,”
Avery said as she shut the door
behind her.
The butterflies in Avery’s stomach
were still fluttering as she turned
from the car and began walking to
her apartment.
“Avery, wait! You forgot your
bag,” Mark yelled out to Avery as
he was hanging out the window
of his BMW.
As if Avery didn’t feel like enough of
a fool in front of him, she made her
way back over to his car to collect
her things.
“Thanks. I swear I’ll be more
alert tomorrow,” she said as she
swung her bag over her shoulder
and walked up the path to her
apartment door.
Avery did one last wave goodbye
before walking into her apartment,
jumping onto the couch, and
screaming into a pillow. She
had totally embarrassed herself
multiple times throughout the
day in front of Mark. It was hard
to concentrate on what was
important when you had a Greek
god mentoring you. Avery told
herself that she was not going to
let her feelings and attraction to
Mark get in the way of her work.
It was very hard for Avery to fall
asleep that night. The butterflies in
her stomach were still present, no
matter how hard she wished them
away. She ended up tossing and
turning for hours until she finally
passed out. It felt as though she was
only asleep for a moment when she
was awaken by someone pounding
relentlessly on her door. Avery
grabbed her robe, threw it on and
tirelessly made her way to the door.
To her surprise, Mark was standing
there with a not-so-pleasant look
on his face.
“Do you have any idea what time it
is?” Mark scoffed at Avery.
He looked as though he was going
to continue scolding her, but
was taken aback by her beauty.
He couldn’t help but stare at her
illuminating morning glow. Avery’s
hazel eyes were glistening in the
California sun. Her hair was loosely
tied back with pieces that fell along
her freckled skin and rested above
her collarbone. Her robe outlined
her curvy body, leaving little to
the imagination. Although he
caught himself imagining what lied
beneath that black silk robe. Mark
knew he shouldn’t be thinking what
he was thinking, so he decided to
switch gears and continue lecturing
her on her irresponsibility.
“I have been pounding on your
door for 15 minutes now…” Mark
said as he pushed back his perfect
brown locks.
“I will be ready in two minutes! I am
so sorry! I must’ve forgot to set my
alarm…” Avery nervously responded
as she pulled her robe close as she
crossed her arms, covering herself
with embarrassment.
“I’ll be waiting in my car. You have
five minutes Miss Anderson.” Mark
replied as he made his way back to
the car.
Avery rushed back into the house,
throwing on whatever outfit she
could find lying on the floor beside
her bed. She quickly combed back
her bedhead and applied a quick
layer of foundation. She managed to
not look completely out of sorts for
getting ready in five minutes while
shear panic ran through her body.
Avery grabbed her bag and was out
the door with a minute to spare.
After Avery got situated in the
passenger seat, Mark looked over
to her and said, “I promised you a
ride, and you won’t get another one
again if you don’t start showing
some responsibility. Your lateness is
now going to be a reflection on me.
You are my responsibility, and I am
here to mold you into the creative
genius all your college professors
made you out to be. So, whatever
is going on with you, it has to
stop. This internship is what most
film students dream of and you’re
wasting it away with your shear
disregard for time management.
Now let’s put this behind us and
start this day fresh.”
Avery was still so embarrassed, but
at least Mark had enough faith in
her to give her a chance to redeem
herself. If she wouldn’t have let
her emotions get in the way of her
dream job, she wouldn’t be in the
situation she’s in now. She decided
that she was going to turn herself
around, and show Mark how good
she actually was at her job.
Avery rushed over to the group
of interns where she was greeted
with a smile by Jackson. At least
she had one person who she didn’t
disappoint yet. Viola discussed with
the group that the interns would be
shadowing their mentors for the
entire day. Avery should have been
thrilled with the idea of getting to
shadow Mark all day, but after the
morning she was having she was
hoping to be able to avoid him for
a bit longer.
“I was hoping we would get to
tour more areas of the studio
today. I already am in hot
water with my manager,” Avery
whispered to Jackson.
“Why are you in hot water with
him?” Jackson asked.
Avery didn’t want to get into the
whole story with Jackson, so she
just told him how she ruined his
shot the day before, and caused him
to be late this morning.
“Luckily it’s only day two. You have
so much time to win him over. I have
faith in you Avery,” Jackson said as
he gave her a reassuring smile.
Avery was definitely glad that she
made friends with Jackson early
on. It was nice having a friend and
support during a new transition in
her life. As for the other interns,
they had already grouped up
together. They all seemed very
confident with not only their work,
but themselves. Avery could sense
Karma judging her from a mile
away. That’s why Jackson and Avery
kept to themselves.
After their meeting the interns
grouped up with their managers.
Mark had been preparing for the
next couple scenes in his movie,
when Avery approached him.
“I’m all yours. Let me know what
you need and when you need it,”
Avery said enthusiastically to Mark.
“Just stay behind the camera men
and try not to get in anyone’s way.
I want you strictly to watch today.
Try to really study how I do things
and how everything flows together,
because eventually you’re going to
be doing this on your own.” Mark
replied.
Avery could still sense that Mark
was a little annoyed with her. So,
she did what he said and got out of
the way. Everyone was moving so
quickly, and before she knew it they
were getting ready to shoot the
first scene of the day. Mark called
for the actors on his headset, and
to Avery’s surprise, Bethany Grey
made her way onto the set. She
was covered in dirt and fake blood
for the movie, but still happened to
look flawless.
Mark was amazing. She could not
stop watching him. He worked so
effortlessly to capture breathtaking
and heart-wrenching shots. It was
almost like breathing to him. As
if Avery wasn’t already crushing
hard enough on Mark, he had to
prove how much more amazing
he was. Avery was so inspired by
his approach and artistry that she
could hardly wait to get to wear
that headset and direct her first
ever motion picture scene.
“I want you to watch the way you
did today for the next week.” Mark
said to Avery before making his way
over to Bethany Grey.
Although, Avery was jealous
of Bethany Grey and a little
disappointed that she was only
going to be watching the shoots
take place this week, she couldn’t
help but feel happy. Overall, day two
was a much better day for her. Well,
after waking up late and pissing
Mark off, Avery felt more motivated
to show Mark that it was not a
mistake for her to be there. Avery
was going to prove to everyone that
she could make a name for herself
in this industry.
If you’re planning a beach getaway, the thought of what to wear besides
a swimsuit will arise, as all beach visits don’t necessarily require one.
With an array of alternatives from wearing a bathing
suit accompanied with a sundress as one option,
another would be a sexy tank top with your
favorite denim cut-offs to an evening of
wraps and accessories. Dressing for
an afternoon in the sun won’t
leave you totally exposed,
offering a beachy,
summery vibe.
12
WHAT TO WEAR TO THE BEACH 13

Fun in the sun!
A perfect outfit to wear to the beach may be an effortless yet fun
short printed sundress, coordinating wedges, sunglasses, and a
large brimmed sun hat accented by simple accessories. Invest in
a printed dress of a lightweight material such as cotton voile, linen
or natural fiber of rayon, which would be ideal as they all provide
comfort. Another fun factor to keep in mind is a sundress that can be
utilized as a cover-up, giving you the freedom of a bikini beneath;
it will provide an easy transition from the pier with friends to a sandy
beach afternoon while only removing one item. When you shop for
your perfect sundress, remember to look for one that showcases your
figure in an array of bright hues or a festive pattern, a perfect shade
to start with may be a dreamy blue as it can be worn with everything.
Sun-Kissed Tanks
Is there anything sexier than a tank top on the beach? This versatile
top brings summer fun with a whole new meaning as it not only keeps
you cool during the heat of the day, it’s also a layering piece that can
bring you from the beach to a number of other summer fun occasions.
Complete the look by selecting denim cut-off shorts paired with a
braided belt, straw panama hat, Ray-Ban aviator shades and, of
course, your favorite Havaiana flip flops.
It goes
without
saying—your
best accessory
at the beach will
be, by far, sunscreen.
Be sure to re-apply every
two hours; more often if
you are enjoying the water.
Remember, style shouldn’t stop
with a bad sunburn!
Article by: Doris Hobbs
An Evening on the Beach
During the day, your beach attire may consist of little or
nothing; at night when the temperatures begin to cool, it
may be time for a bit more style. A simple polo shirt dress paired
with a few of your daywear accessories would work nicely, without
you feeling overdressed. Another simple outfit idea is a simple maxi
dress with a color-coordinated shawl for the coastal breeze—if
you find yourself leaving the beach, it can be removed easily and
exchanged with summery cork wedges. Don’t forget to place a hint
of gold on your wrist, some color to your ears and a flashy cocktail
ring for those after-sun cocktails with friends celebrating the season.
Arizona’s
film industry is a small but passionate
community of talented actors, writers,
and directors. Among them is actor,
writer and director, Marcelo Dietrich.
He has written and will be directing
the Arizona 10 short films. Arizona
10 is a collection of 10 short films that
take place in various towns and cities in
Arizona that delves into the psyche of
the people living the stories everyone
is familiar with. They are written in a
way that will allow people to better
understand what it’s like to really live in
someone else’s shoes for a day.
Marcelo has a refreshing approach
to directing. He is very involved with
the visualization process and is able
to create a comfortable environment
for his actors to be vulnerable in their
performances. I had the pleasure of
speaking with him about the Arizona 10
films and he has been gracious enough
to answer a few questions regarding
the films along with how he became
involved in entertainment industry.
UR IT- WHEN DID YOU START
WRITING/DIRECTING?
Marcelo- I should explain when
and how I realized that my purpose
in life is to be a writer/director.
I’ve always loved acting and wanted to
be an actor for as long as I can remember.
One time, while a sophomore in high
school, I was playing with G.I. Joes in
my bedroom. I realized I had created a
production. I had a first act, a second
act and was coming up on the climax
of the third act. I thought to myself,
“Marcelo. Your imagination is too great
to limit yourself to just acting.”I realized
my purpose is to be a writer and
director to create these worlds in which
characters live. I then said to myself,
“Oh. That’s what I’m supposed to do.” It
was a realization of my purpose in life.
I should also mention that while I am
a writer, (producer) and director, I was
and am an actor first. I love acting!
I guess I really got my start in directing
shortly thereafter. My brother James,
and my cousins Steve and Tiana and
I would create short films and music
videos with my Dads’ VHS camera.
That was a lot of fun! The four of us
very close. That was a great experience
for a number of reasons, and possibly
the most important is that I learned
how to direct and work with children.
As a matter of fact, Steve is cast in
one of the Arizona 10 Short Films!
I’ve also been fortunate to have had
the opportunity to direct a number
of plays. I directed eight plays, all
with elementary school children.
It was a fantastic experience!
As far as writing, I first started
writing feature-length screenplays.
I’ve also written for a TV channel,
two Internet TV channels. I’ve
written for a film-related publication
and a lifestyle publication. I’ve also
written a number of short films.
UR IT- WHAT DIFFERENTIATES
YOU FROM OTHER DIRECTORS?
Marcelo - What I believe
differentiates myself from other
directors is my experience as an
actor. I take great pride in that
experience. Of all of the many things
it has instilled in me, one of the most
profound aspects is my appreciation
of and adoration for my fellow actors.
I know what it’s like to be an actor,
in every way possible. The good
and the bad, the ups and the downs,
the suffering and the hopes, I know
and have also experienced it all.
In reality, while on set, in all of the
busyness of production, it’s just the
actor and I. I must do all that I can to
support the actor in giving their best
performance. That’s the least I must do.
Another point is this: The actors’
sacrifice. I write very challenging
roles. The roles require my actors to
put away their inhibitions, forget their
fears and to not only be vulnerable, but
to also trust me. If an actor is cast in
one of my films, I trust that they’ll be
able to pull off the role spectacularly.
I cherish and appreciate that
relationship. I cherish and appreciate
my actors trust. Actors sacrifice a
lot. I respect that. I respect them.
UR IT- WHERE DID YOU COME
UP WITH THE CONCEPTS FOR
ARIZONA 10 SHORT FILMS?
Marcelo - The concepts for
Arizona 10 Short Films came from
life. The films are about the everyday
stories you hear or read about, such
as PTSD, organ transplants, and
bullying. However, we’re going to look
at the people involved in those stores.
We’re going to delve into their psyche.
I’ve always said that if I wasn’t a
filmmaker, I’d be a psychologist (or
a horologist). When you watch the
films, you’ll be familiar with the
stories, and I believe you’ll gain an
appreciation for the people in those
everyday stories you hear or read about.
UR IT- WHAT ARE YOUR
HOPES FOR THE SUCCESS
OF THESE SHORT FILMS?
Marcelo- I do have lots of hope
for their success. We have long-term
goals for each of the Arizona 10 Short
Films. We’re going to submit each of
the films to as many Oscar-qualifying
short film festivals as possible
and we’re seeking both domestic
and international distribution.
Most importantly, I hope the
Arizona 10 Short Films offer
insight into the human condition.
UR IT- HOW CAN PEOPLE VIEW/
SUPPORT THIS PROJECT?
Marcelo - The films will be
available for viewing on a view on
demand Web site after the completion
of the Arizona 10 Short Films.
We’ll soon be launching a crowdsupporting
After the completion of the
Arizona 10 Short Films, we’re
having a private viewing party for
our cast, crew, and our supporters.
In closing, I want to also tell you
a story. One of the actresses that
came in to audition for Arizona 10
Short Films is a young, ambitious
woman. She showed great excitement
for the project from what I believe
was the first public announcement
for the Arizona 10 Short Films.
In her headshot, you can tell that she
is comfortable with her self. (Yes. Two
words). She’s confident, but not arrogant.
She’s professional, yet fun - if you will.
In her audition, she took quite well
to my direction. She put away her
inhibitions, she forgot her fears, and she
became vulnerable. I was very pleased
with her as a human being, and as an
actress as well - she is fantastic at both!
Not only did I cast her in the lead role
of one of the Arizona 10 Short Films,
but she also made me believe that
switching the role from a male lead
to a female lead was a brilliant idea.
I know Jessica Martin is going to be
superb in this role, and in the film
“10-41”.
The Actions of One
Affects So Many
Reactions from the UR IT Staff
“
What
is worth
all of this?”
These days, it is known that
a gunman, a robber, or any
other criminal can strike
anywhere and for any reason. Not
long ago, that experience became all
too real for UR IT Magazine owner
and photographer Jeremy Clark.
On June 13, the boyfriend of one
of the magazine’s (former) models
entered Jeremy’s home early in the
morning and threatened
him with a gun to turn
over all photos and other
magazine information.
There went Jeremy’s hard
work, the models’ time and
effort, the writers’ articles,
the graphic designer’s
creativity—everything—
on computers, cameras,
hard drives. All because of
one model and one photo.
Upon hearing the news,
the models and others
were shocked and have
since spoken out and
shared their feelings.
Immediately, the
majority of the models
expressed their hopes
that Jeremy was okay and offered
prayers.
As soon as the news was shared
with models, they responded:
“People overreact over such petty
things; it’s very sad.” “They will
get what they deserve.” “I really
don’t understand some people.”
“Some people are just down-right
cold-hearted.” And one, upon
expressing her anger, questioned,
“What is worth all of this?”
That is one question no one can
answer but the actor himself and
he will likely never provide a public
answer. Maybe he will feel guilt, or
no guilt and, maybe it was all worth
it to him over one photo. Maybe
not…or maybe it won’t be once the
legalities are straightened out. But
no matter what that answer may
be, the incident happened and the
models and UR IT staff are the ones
losing out.
The mother of two UR IT models
said that she is enraged over
the incident, though no one was
physically harmed.
“The thought of some random
person stealing the photos of my
girls as well as many girls I’ve
come to meet through UR IT has
me very angry and upset,” she said.
“I’m concerned as to what he may
do with the photos—where they
may end up.”
This woman said if she could, she
would love to tell the actor “he had
no right to take the work
from the girls.”
“A lot goes into the shoots
and photos from all involved
and it was completely
unnecessary for him to ruin
all the hard work, simply
because he did not like
what his own girlfriend
did,” she shared. “And to his
girlfriend, I’d like to tell her
she’s ridiculous for putting
others in danger for her
poor choice in boys.”
Some models and staff
members were not sure
the threat was real and
questioned if Jeremy
was joking, because
they recognize his friendly and
humorous personality. “I was
really hoping he was joking,” said
one model/staff member. Soon,
she realized someone had really
threatened Jeremy’s life and stole
all UR IT materials.
“My mind raced,” she said. “My
heart was racing. I was angry and
worried; who could have done such
a thing? Is Jer‘ okay?”
She, like many others, awaited a
call or news that everything was
okay. Relief was felt as soon as
Jeremy was able to explain what
had happened and say that he was
all right—physically.
“I was relieved,” the model/staff
member stated. “But when I found
out who it was and what happened,
I didn’t know what to say. I was so
angry, hurt and disappointed. Why
did they have to do this? Everything
we have all worked hard for and it
was gone in 10 minutes.”
Frustration is another emotion
ranking close with anger in the
situation. Fright is another: The
actor could possibly have personal
information and photos of nearly
all of the models.
“This guy and girl who have our
information really need help and/
or to possibly reevaluate their
relationship. There is no reason
for any of us to be going through
this,” another model said. “This is
supposed to be fun, not putting
anyone in harm’s way.”
“I have been waiting a few months
to get my pictures, I’ve attended
various shoots, put a lot of time
and effort into these shoots, and
now everything is gone. Sadly, I
may not ever see my pictures that
I have been patiently waiting for,”
22
THE ACTIONS OF ONE AFFECTS SO MANY
THE ACTIONS OF ONE AFFECTS SO MANY
23

another model summarized, sharing
the thoughts of nearly all who gave
reactions. “Everybody within UR
IT is busy enough let alone giving
up more time to pick up whatever
pieces that are left. It also upsets
me to know that a stranger has
pictures of me and information
regarding me and I do not know
what he is doing with them.”
The models agreed that not only did
the actor(s) hurt Jeremy—a great
person who would do anything for
anyone…a fun and caring person—
but, “They hurt the entire UR IT
community.”
“I am devastated that they not
only stole our images that we
put so much time into, but most
importantly that they have robbed
someone of their peace of mind,”
noted one model who has done
many shoots with UR IT.
Everyone working with the
magazine seems to agree that taking
such measures over one photo
is unreal. They said that simply
asking to have the photo removed
from social media, deleted, and not
published would have had greater
results and far fewer ramifications
(probably none at all).
“[The model] knows her comfort
level and if she was okay with
whatever the pictures were, then
this guy needs to accept that
and who she is. We all have our
boundaries and I know Jeremy
is not going to make any of
us cross those boundaries,” a
model said.
“I can’t fathom threatening
someone’s life over photos that
you asked to have done,” agreed
a second staff member/model,
who noted she was shocked and
livid upon hearing the news. “It
doesn’t make much sense.”
“I can’t fathom why the couple felt
they needed to take such action
against Jeremy, knowing that he
is a reasonable, understanding
person,” agreed a model who
recently spent long days in photo
shoots in South Carolina, with
nothing to now show for that
time. “I have used this incident
to remind myself how important
it is to remember safety in this
business. UR IT has pride in taking
on confident, professional models,
and unfortunately there are bad
apples that have slipped through.
I believe this is our opportunity
to change our safety policies with
conducting interviews with the
new models coming in.”
Some models said they have
several unanswered questions,
and some are concerned with
how having their work stolen
and possibly gone forever will
affect their goals and efforts
towards other modeling gigs or
acting auditions.
“I want to go for acting by the
way. All this…I feel like this
man took right from under
my nose. It’s a small scratch
on my dreams, but I hope it
doesn’t affect me too much,”
said one of UR IT’s newer
models who is working to
gain experience.
The legalities in the case
are not yet set straight and there
is likely a long road to go. It is
unknown at this time if any items
can be recovered, but there are
hopes jail time is in the future of
the actor and his girlfriend in the
incident.
“A person who laughs at the
possibility of someone losing their
life deserves to be in jail,” the first
model/staff member shared. “Jeremy
didn’t deserve any of this.”
“I guess my thoughts are that there
will always be ugly people like this
is the world we live in but we can’t
let them take our smile away,”
a model said. “We need to keep
pushing forward and not let them
win.”
There is also hope that Jeremy
won’t “lose his spunk” or let
the threat affect his passion for
photography and drive to continue
UR IT Magazine. So far, everything
is moving forward and there is no
sight of giving up.
“I don’t think they knew the extent
of their actions,” said the second
staff member/model. “We’ve lost
so much irreplaceable work. All
we can do is try to keep working
forward and wait for justice to be
served.”
Eating
Healthy:
How it Effects Your Mental
And Emotional Health
e know that eating right
Wand maintaining a healthy
diet is key to attaining healthy
body weight. As well, it helps keep
lifestyle diseases away. Well, these
are not the only benefits of healthy
eating. Actually, different studies
have linked a typical western diet
filled with processed foods, sugary
snacks and packed meals, to higher
rates of bipolar disorder, stress,
anxiety and depression, among
other mental and emotional health
issues. These studies have shown that
deteriorating mental and emotional
health lead to more suicide cases.
So, how exactly does healthy
eating influence your mental and
emotional health?
Reduced Lethargy and
Crankiness
Some people prefer to skip meals
as a weight loss solution, and
instead eat one large meal in a
day. While this could be working
on your weight, did you know that
skipping a meal causes a drop in
your blood sugar?
Low blood sugar levels have
a negative impact on your
emotional health. In extreme
cases, people may avoid you due
to your moody nature. Yet, the
problem is in your diet choices.
Instead of skipping meals, you can
eat small amounts of food at least
6 times a day to maintain your
sugar levels.
In order to have longer-lasting
blood sugar levels, you need to
be careful on the type of sugar
foods you take. If you opt to eat
generally sugary foods, you will
experience an initial surge in
energy because they are absorbed
quickly in the bloodstream.
Unfortunately, they will wear out
as fast as they were absorbed.
Alternatively, take whole grain
cereals, fruits, and vegetables
which are more filling in the sense
that they are absorbed slowly,
making you feel full longer.
Boosted Feeling of
Optimism and Calmness
Research has showed that eating
foods rich in the amino acid
tryptophan increases serotonin
levels in the brain, resulting in
more positive feelings. As a result,
people who include such foods
in their diet have lower risk of
depression and anxiety.
To get tryptophan, include
bananas, avocados, dried
apricots, walnuts, sunflower
seeds, or pumpkin seeds in
your diet.
Higher Effectiveness of
Antidepressants
Omega-3 fatty acids are great
sources of healthy fats. In addition
to helping in the treatment of
depression by stabilizing your
mood, these fats also have the
ability to boost the effectiveness
of conventional antidepressants.
Therefore, it can help people with
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD).
To boost consumption of foods
rich in omega-3, the American
Heart Association recommends
eating oily fish (salmon, trout,
mackerel, anchovies, and
sardines) at least twice a week.
In a different twist, lack of
maintaining a healthy diet can
be dangerous especially to
people taking certain psychiatric
medication. For example, if
you are taking MAOI, a type of
antidepressant, you should avoid
eating fermented, pickled, cured,
hung, dried or matured foods. This
is because when exposed to air,
these foods produce tyramine,
which when combined with MAOI
produces a dangerous mix.
Conclusion
According to the Mental Health
Foundation, 1 in 4 people are likely
to experience some kind of mental
health problem. Clearly, from our
discussion above, we can keep
this number constant or even
reduce it if we consider healthy
eating. Additionally, in case you
are taking any kind of psychiatric
medication, it is important to
check with your doctor to know
which foods to avoid and which
ones to take in order to boost the
effectiveness of your medication.
CTD AD
FASHION
SHOW
UR IT Ninja
Rarely do I reschedule shoots, attempt to
leave work early, or purposefully deprive
myself of more sleep than necessary… but
when your boyfriend’s life is suddenly
way cooler than yours, you readily make
adjustments.
Last month, my boyfriend Logan Broadbent
and I got one of the most exciting phone
calls we could ever imagine.
On a Monday evening, a producer called and
said Logan qualified to become a finalist for
Season 8 of American Ninja Warrior.
Cue my screaming.
28
29

Logan was actually at his flag football
game at the time of the call.
I asked him if he could just come
home so we could just scream and
jump around.
I had this feeling that life was about
to get crazy.
I was right.
In just two short weeks from
that day, Logan needed to be in
Philadelphia to compete.
But first, let me tell you a little bit
about him.
Growing up with quite a bit of
adversity, Logan threw himself into
sports as sort of an escape from the
real world.
What was quickly discovered in
the process was that he was an
incredible natural athlete.
In fact, it was rather challenging
to find any athletic feat where
he didn’t excel.
Logan had speed, stamina,
strength and picked up new
endeavors at a rapid pace.
In school, he was an All-
American diver, an undefeated
wrestler, a track and cross
country star … and as he grew
older, he began competing in
triathlons.He has now qualified for
the U.S. Triathlon Nationals twice,
qualified for the most recent
Boston Marathon by nearly 20
minutes and, as a member of
the United States Boomerang
Team, is currently ranked the
number one thrower in the
country.
As a couple, it
doesn’t matter
whether we’re
hiking, shopping
or hanging out
at home, I quickly
learned that Logan
is forever looking for a way to make
day-to-day activities a little more
challenging.
He will carry groceries into the
house with his arms straight out to
his sides. He hates hiking on given
paths, but rather hops up on the
fence ledge to travel. Even simple
acts like entering Target have to
include him hopping up on top of
one of those giant red balls outside
the store before making his way
through the door.
Logan sees the world as one big
jungle gym and he likes to get as
much use out of it as he can!
But for a course like Ninja Warrior,
natural talent isn’t enough.
There are ninjas and ninjas-intraining
who literally quit their
jobs to train year-round.
Logan has a full-time job as the
global strategic deal manager for
GE Lighting that keeps him very
busy, but he’s always spent every
other spare minute running and
working out.
However, when we found out he
would be on the show, “working
out” was suddenly kicked into high
gear.
While Logan started mad-paced
training, I did everything I could
to help.
I researched and scheduled
special sessions at ninja gyms in
Columbus, OH and Buffalo, NY. I
made arrangements with his family
and friends to attend the show,
designed tee-shirts and signs,
bought special food, took care
of the house, gathered all
the photos and footage the
producers requested, shopped
for the proper course clothes
– pretty much anything I
could to allow Logan as much
time as possible to train.
Even though I couldn’t do
much to help the physical part
of his training, I felt like we
were a team and I wanted him
to succeed more than anything.
We spent as much time as we could
at the special ninja gyms.
There is so much
technique that
goes into each
obstacle, and
it was headspinning
how fast
Logan was picking them all up.
Before we knew it, we were boarding
a flight to Philadelphia.
He would be competing as the
“Boomerang Ninja.”
We got in late on a Tuesday night
and Logan immediately went into
interviews on Wednesday morning
on a rooftop in downtown Philly. It
was kind of crazy to walk out of the
stairwell and see all these ninjas
stretching, flipping, balancing on
railings…
I wondered if Logan had ever been
in an area with that many people
like himself before.
I found the wife of the
man donned “Rabi Ninja”
and spent much of the
morning chatting with
her. There weren’t too
many other significant
others there and I wanted
to give Logan space to get
to know everyone without
me hanging on his arm.
The rest of the day was
so fun! I watched Logan
shoot lots of what they
call “Hero” shots, where
he would start by looking
down and slowly look up into the
camera. I could tell they were those
fun shots you see when someone is
getting introduced on the show.
They asked Logan to give a real
serious look, which isn’t really
Logan. He asked if he could smile
instead. It made me laugh.
The crew shot a lot of B-roll of
Logan tumbling, throwing and
hanging from these uneven bars.
We were then shuttled to a hotel
about 15 minutes away where he
had to undergo an interview.
Afterward, we decided to check out
a local ninja gym on the New Jersey
border. We discovered they had built
a paddle-board obstacle similar
to the one we all heard would be
utilized the next day on the course.
I was impressed watching Logan
try it out. He mastered it right off
the bat.
We went to sleep as early as we
could and slept in as late as we
possibly could.
The show doesn’t start taping
until it’s completely dark outside –
around 10 p.m. – so we knew it was
going to be a late one.
We tried going to the course early
to watch all the testers, but they
wouldn’t allow us in because Logan
was a competitor.
Instead we went downtown to grab
a healthy lunch, then went back to
the course to get Logan checked in.
I had to leave him and get in line
with other guests.
Everyone looked so happy and
excited.
I was nervous out of my mind.
It wasn’t that I lacked confidence in
Logan’s abilities, but if something
happened beyond his control (like a
slip on a mat because it had gotten
wet) he only had one shot.
I just didn’t want him to leave sad
or disappointed.
Logan’s family arrived soon and it
was a nice distraction for a while.
Finally around midnight, a producer
called for us and pulled me and
Logan’s sister and brother-inlaw
aside as we were his sideline
walkers.
Logan was number 42 out of 100.
When it was his turn, we made our
way down to the side of the course
to watch. I was clutching onto one
of Logan’s little red boomerangs
like some crazy lady as we waited
for him to come out.
Later my friends, who could
watch us from the big screen, told
me I looked like I was
hyperventilating down
below.
Lovely...
Despite the fact that I’d
told myself I was not going
to act a fool on national
TV, I was so nervous I was
hardly aware of anything I
was doing.
Suddenly, Logan walked
out from under this huge
arch and I could see him in
the bright lights smiling
from ear to ear and spinning a
boomerang on his finger. He looked
so cute and happy.
My heart was beating like crazy,
and then he was off!
He tackled the first three obstacles
like a pro, then came to the fourth
where he would have to climb up
these hanging nunchucks to get
up to this vertical mat, then jump
down, take one bounce on a mini
tramp and launch himself back up
to grab onto what appeared to be
these two fat punching bags.
Well, prior to Logan, we’d watched
as barely anyone was able to make
it this obstacle. I was already so
proud he’d gone so far.
30 THE JAMI KINTON DIARIES
31

I stood there watching as a producer
came out and announced the next
night’s lineup.
It turned out Logan was an alternate
for the next night, but everyone
showed up and he never got to run
the course again.
We left there a little disappointed
but we had both learned so much
and had an unbelievable experience.
I told Logan the producers really
seemed to like him and hopefully
would bring him back next season.
Then we got an exciting phone
call that Logan would be getting a
hometown visit by a film crew to
do his backstory. They only chose
a select few, and we were thrilled
Logan was one of them.
Most who had made it to that jump
were buckling on the tramp and
falling into the water, and if you
took more than one bounce you were
disqualified.
Logan jumps down, springs back up
and grabs hold of the bag!
Just a little too high.
Now he has to shimmy himself down
the bag so he can try to reach his leg
to the next wall to dismount, only
the bag has stopped swinging and he
has to try and start rocking it to get
enough momentum to find his exit.
We watch him try to swing once,
twice, three times, four times, five
times, six times, seven times…
I swear my heart was going to explode.
Then one foot finally catches the
side, immediately followed by the
other, and the entire crowd erupts!
I jumped up and down so hard my
phone flew out of my back pocket.
He moves on to the fifth obstacle
now! There are only six.
On the fifth, there is a wheel hanging
between two bars. Competitors had
to grip onto the wheel and start
turning it forward to try and roll it
down to the other end.
Logan attempted a maneuver that
no one before him had tried, and no
one after.
He turned himself backward and
then threaded his arms through the
wheel and attempted to turn it with
his forearms. I knew he was trying
to save his grip strength.
Back and back he went, but about
halfway through… he slipped out
and fell into the water.
We were still thrilled. Again, hardly
anyone had made it this far and
he’d had such an exciting run.
I watched him get out and be
escorted to an area where the
host of the show came out and
started to interview him. I ran
over to the side so I could try and
hear – couldn’t hear anything but
remember yelling, “We love you
Logan!” like a complete goofball
once he finished.
Words just flew out of my mouth.
Logan came over and expressed
how bummed he was that he fell.
I told him we had been watching
everyone and hardly anyone had
made it that far. We were so sure
he would still continue on to the
finals as they were taking the top
30 out of 100.
Logan’s friends and family were
spent and left shortly thereafter
until it was just Logan, his friend
Michelle and me.
Michelle works the third shift and
had no problem staying awake. I
was so grateful to have her there.
As the night wore on, the
contestants started to fly, and I
mean FLY, through the course.
Not too many ended up actually
completing all six obstacles, but
if many more were making it to
where Logan had and they were
booking it.
Logan came and sat with us sharing
that he was kicking himself for
spending so much time getting the
crowd excited when he should have
been going faster.
Because they had us sideline
walkers stand by the third obstacle,
I couldn’t actually see too well how
fast he was going, but Logan said
he really was working his crowd
because he had been told that time
didn’t matter as much that day.
It mattered more at the finals the
next day.
But time did matter and we were all
starting to sweat as the competitors
slowly moved Logan into 15th place,
and then 16th and so on. I prayed
and told myself if it was meant to
be it would be.
What was worse is that we soon
discovered there were quite a few
walk-on ninjas, whose scores were
included with the 100 qualifiers.
It literally came down to the final
few and Logan was in 30th place.
If just one person beat his time he
would be out.
At this point it was around 5 o’clock
in the morning. I was hungry, tired,
anxious… the fate wait was agonizing.
I clutched Michelle’s hand while we
waited. Logan had been called down
to finish watching the final ninjas by
the course.
When everyone was finished, we
found out two of them had knocked
Logan of out the Top 30.
The sun was coming up and we both
were so bummed. Logan went to
gather his things.
In the meantime, Logan now has
a year to train for next season.
He plans to enter local ninja
competitions and try to get on
some other ninja TV shows.
I can’t wait to tag along with him.
Team Boomerang Ninja all the way!
THE JAMI KINTON DIARIES
Women should wait for the
guy to contact them first
Honestly, what’s with the waiting
game? Ladies what makes you feel
that inferior to men to the point
where it’s no longer okay to make
the first move. Somehow society has
pushed women into a corner and
shoved down our throats that it’s not
all right to be headstrong and ask for
what we want. Well that’s all about
to change. Dating goes both ways, as
does starting the conversation and
approaching your hot new crush.
It’s good to push yourself outside
of your comfort zone and even
better… more rewarding. So next
time you see a cute guy at the bar,
pull yourself together and go after
what you deserve!
Hold off on having sex till
the third date.
Now this rule is tricky to say the
least. It has been said that some
women tend to have a 3 date rule
before deciding to give themselves
up. For some reason though
society has assigned women this
all-powerful “do’s & don’ts” list that
they must abide by. One of these
rules being that if you have sex on
the first date, your relationship
(if we even call it that this early
in dating) is doomed. Where’s
the women equality that we all so
rightfully fought for and are still
fighting for? What happened to men
and women being equals? Men have
sex on the first date only to come
home to their roommates giving
them a high five as they enter the
door. BUT when women come home
the morning after a first date wearing
the same clothes as the night before
it’s considered shameful? This rule
has exhausted itself and needs to be
locked away…and this time for good!
Always expect the guy to pay
Every relationship is about giving
and taking, the bill should be no
different. What’s the point of being
in a relationship that’s one sided?
Now I know that many believe that
this falls under common courtesy
that a man should foot the bill, but its
2016 ladies…we’ve come a long way
as well as in the dating world. While
it may be fair to expect a guy who
asked you out to pay for
the initial meal, after that
what’s wrong with paying
for your share or picking
up the tab from time to
time? No man wants a
‘needy’ women, men need
pampered too! This rule
varies from couple to couple
and it all depends on what you
both expect from your significant
other. Whether its split down the
middle or taking turns, think about
this before you sit back and just take
from your relationship.
Never accept last minute plans,
it makes you look desperate
If you aren’t busy don’t you think it’s
a little foolish not to except a date,
especially when the whole reason
you are dating is to meet someone to
spend time with?! Who cares if when
he calls you don’t have plans; trust me
when I say a guy is not reading that
much into it. Unless he’s calling you
after midnight to try and ‘hang-out’
chances are he just really wants to take
you out and genuinely is wondering
if you would like to join him. So stop
worrying that you look desperate and
enjoy the life that is dating!
Play hard to get
Somewhere down the line women
have succumb to ‘playing hard to
get’ and if you don’t then you’re
looked at as easy and heaven forbid
a relationship be easy?! The only
reason you should follow this rule is
if you want to be alone, and by alone I
mean cooped up in your house, eating
ice cream with your dog on the couch.
There is absolutely nothing wrong
with going after what you want and
when you want it. Be headstrong, be
courageous, do something! Maybe
the reason dates aren’t working
out for you is because you are too
afraid to take charge. Now don’t get
me wrong some men may find this
intimidating, but some men find this
attitude sexy and enlightening. You
don’t think men get tired of always
making the first move, turn the tables
and have a taste ladies. UR IT…show
them exactly what that means!
We’ve all been there. Leaving the salon wondering what
happened. Having to make another appointment and
spend more money to fix your hair. You might have even
gone home and took kitchen scissors to your hair. Maybe
you loved your hair when the stylist did it, but you can’t
recreate it. If this is a regular occurrence for you, there are
some things you can do.
RESEARCH THE STYLIST
When looking for a stylist you should know who you’re
going to. How is their work? What are their strengths and
weaknesses? If you want bold color and a trendy cut, but the
stylist’s comfort level is more modest, you’re likely going
to be disappointed. Social media has made researching
workers very simple. Many stylists have Facebook, twitter,
Instagram, etc. If they don’t or you can’t find them, you can
search for the salon itself. Many salons will post stylist’s work
and offers on social media. If you see a style you like, call the
salon and ask who the stylist was. They should be more than
happy to provide the information with you.
BRING A PICTURE
It is always a good idea to give the stylist a reference to look
at. That leaves little room for miscommunication. “Short and
dark brown with blonde” can mean two completely different
things to you and your stylist, and you could leave with
something drastically off from what you wanted. Explain
what you do and don’t like about the photo. For example
“I like the way her hair lays and how her highlights frame
her face. However, I’d like my hair to be slightly longer and
lighter.” When explaining how long you would like your
hair, it’s a good idea to use your hands to show your stylist
exactly where you want your hair to be.
When explaining the color you’d like,
you should ask to see a color book.
That way you can show the stylist what
“slightly lighter” means to you. If the
stylist can see exactly what you choose,
they then know what level, color, and
tone you prefer. You may think you like
cool, icy blonde, and be completely
mortified when you feel you have grey
hair! Turns out, you wanted neutral
blonde, but the stylist gave you what
they thought you were asking for. If
you physically choose a color together,
you can avoid the headache (for both
you and your stylist.)
EXPLAIN EVERYTHING
Hair stylists aren’t mind readers. They
can ask you as many questions as they
like, but it’s up to you to give them the
right information. How do you style
your hair? What products do you use?
How much time are you willing to
spend getting ready? How often are
you willing to visit the salon? What is
your budget? Have you used boxed
color on your hair? The more they
know about your grooming habits, the
better they can serve you. If you aren’t
honest, you’re guiding your stylist
in the wrong direction. One of the
biggest problems in salons is whether
or not you used boxed color. If you did,
that’s okay. Many people have. Just
keep in mind that boxed color is very
different from professional color. If
you do have boxed color on your hair
it may be harder for your stylist to give
you the results that you desire. It will
be much harder if you lie to the stylist,
and as a result, they don’t take the
necessary steps to avoid any potential
problems. Therefore, be honest with
them they will appreciate it.
GIVE YOUR HONEST OPINION
Speaking of being honest, you always
need to give your opinion. Sometimes
stylist miss the mark. Even if you
explain your desires in best detail,
something can be slightly off. In this
case, you need to let the stylist know.
Stay calm and think about what it is
that you don’t like. Angrily stating that
“You just hate it” or “You don’t like any
of it” isn’t going to get you anywhere.
Take a deep breath and think about it.
What is it that you don’t like? Does it
not lay correctly? Maybe the color is
too warm. If you can calmly explain
the problem, the stylist can fix it. If the
stylist can’t fix it or refuses to, ask to
speak with someone else. If you speak
up you should be able to get your
hair fixed without additional cost to
you. If you leave upset without saying
anything, you’ll end up paying more at
another salon.
LISTEN TO THEIR ADVICE
Stylist are professionals that have
been trained to give you the best
results possible, but sometimes the
best results aren’t exactly what you
have in mind. Say that you go to a
salon and ask for platinum blonde
hair, but you have deep, dark red hair.
Chances are, you aren’t going to walk
out with what you originally thought.
Hair can only take so much, and stylist
can only do so much. There’s a good
chance that they will want to take you
to your desired color in steps, so they
can protect the health of your hair.
Maybe you have tight curls and you ask
for a choppy, edgy haircut. However,
you don’t often have the time to style
your hair. There’s a chance that the
stylist might recommend that you
get a haircut that better suits your
needs. At the end of the day, they are
looking out for your best interest. You
don’t have to do exactly what they
say, but considering their advice may
save your hair.
USE GOOD PRODUCTS
Products can make or break your
hairstyle, and your stylist know which
ones to use. There are products that
are made for curly hair, straight hair,
color treated hair, anti-humidity,
finishing, heat protection, shine, dry
hair, oily hair, matte looks, thin hair,
and the list goes on! If you aren’t sure
38
HOW TO GET THE PERFECT STYLE FROM YOUR HAIRDRESSER
39

where to start just ask your stylist and they can give you
an educated opinion and point you in the right direction.
Besides, if you love your hair when he/she styles it for you, why
wouldn’t you want the product that makes it possible? If you’re
concerned about price, explain that to them. They should be able
to recommend less expensive alternatives. Keep in mind though,
often times you get what you pay for. There’s a reason that amazing
product might be more expensive than the rest.
There’s also a reason products are less expensive when you buy
them from general stores or from shady online dealers. You’re only
guaranteed the original product when you buy from a salon or beauty
supplier. You could be buying a “watered down” version of that particular
product. If you buy online (unless from a reputable beauty supplier) you
don’t know what you’re actually buying. Always be aware of where you
buy your beauty products. Do some research to make sure you’re getting
the real thing.
BE REALISTIC
There’s nothing wrong with wanting the best, but you should always
stay in the realm of possibility. Like earlier mentioned, you might not
get that gorgeous platinum hair in one sitting. Your stylist is doing
the best they can with what they have. I’m sure you have days at
work where you are asked to do the impossible. Well, stylist have
those days, too. The more you are willing to communicate and
compromise with your stylist, the better. However, if you’re
always leaving unhappy (even after trying these tips) maybe
it’s time to find a new stylist.
TRAILER PARK
SHOOT
This month’s themed shoot.
Grab UR Cooler!
42
43

There are two groups of people, those with high self-esteem and those with
low self-esteem. Low self esteem in women is significantly high, starting as
early as elementary school. The greatest contributors to this include the
societal pressure to be perfect and gender disparity.
Factually, over 90% of 15-17 year-old girls want to change at least one
aspect of their physical appearance and 47% of girls are held back from
pursuing their dreams due to low self-esteem.
When these girls mature into women, and some make it to the top level
in the society, of course their esteem is boosted. Imagine being one of the
only 34 women who have ever served as governors compared to 2319 men
in the same position or being part of the meager 3% of women who have
served as fortune 500 CEOs. Given these circumstances, your esteem would
be extremely boosted, right?
But when is high self-esteem toxic?
How do you draw the line?
Confident People Don’t Give
Condescending Remarks
Let’s look at how to tell the difference:
The Difference Is In Their Attitude
Confident People Maintain
Eye Contact
People with high self-esteem
hold you in high regard when
they are talking to you and will
maintain eye contact. Conversely,
an arrogant person will treat
you like some societal riff-raff ,
looking at you as though you are
wasting her time, costing her an
opportunity to meet someone
better than you.
Confidence Exudes In Actions
Not Words
High self-esteem will just ooze
out of someone’s actions while
an arrogant person thrives more
at broadcasting her successes.
Her selfish nature will cause
her to only talk about herself,
her achievements and well…..
herself again.
People with normal high selfesteem
are high-minded because
they feel good about themselves
without having or needing
to patronize others. They are
great at spotting potential and
nurturing it until it flourishes,
without feeling threatened.
On the contrary, arrogant
people are single-minded and
only focus on how superior or
inferior a person is to them. This
puts them in a defensive mode,
making them always ready to
tear someone down in case they
feel threatened by them. You will
be shocked to realize that this is
a special case of people with low
self esteem.
Confident people know that
they are as good as the next
person, hence they treat people
equally. Arrogant people on the
other hand think they are better
than others. This explains their
snobbish behavior and chronic
tendency of not listening to others
and dismissing them.
Confident People Show Vulnerability,
Arrogant People Blame Others
Have you ever met someone who
is confident at doing a certain
task yet has the guts to admit
that sometimes she doesn’t do it
right? Clearly, this is someone
with high self-esteem but admits
that’s she is human and could
potentially make mistakes. An
arrogant person will instead find
something or someone to blame.
Final Thoughts
To build healthy relationships and
fully impact on others especially
after having suffered from low
self-esteem and recovered, it is
important that you understand the
fine line between self confidence
and arrogance. If you want to go
far, you go alone and if you want
to go farther, you go with others.
Confident people impact others
while an arrogant person is only
useful to herself. So, choose where
to stand.
