BIKE BUILD 50 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

LABOUR OF LOVE A MIGHTY CR5OOAF LIVES AGAIN “You are motivated by paying legend tax for boyhood dreams and break out in a cold sweat at the prospect of twisting the throttle of a solid fuelled rocket ship while peering through the two stroke smoke haze, step this way, we have just the straight jacket for you...” Guys and gals. We’ve seen many rebuilt, fancy schmancy motorcycles in the twenty something years that we’ve been doing this, but few compare with this piece of beauty built by enthusiast Gavin Van Der Riet. We saw the bike briefly at The Kyalami motor show and we made an appointment to get some more in depth info on the build. What we assumed was a bolt on job is actually a remanufactured motorcycle from the ground up. Gav saw one of these project bikes in the USA, but that would cost about 17000 dollars, and he figured he could build one here. So what is it? This is a hybrid. It’s a CR500 engine in a CRF250R aluminium Frame. Now we are not going to bore you with all of the details – but we are going to give you some of the detail of what goes into a build like this. • Gavin sourced four old CR500’s and bought them. They were stripped with the best engine parts from each bike used for the rebuild. • He sourced a scrap CRF250R rolling chassis. Chassis: • We had an inkling of what was involved but we were left thunderstruck at the amount of work involved. The frame needed to be cut and extended to house the big 500cc banger. This work was undertaken by Gavin and all of the welding was done by Dreyer welding- 076-129-6426. The biggest challenge is to get the sprockets perfectly aligned. • Mounting points were relocated and the headstay bracket relocated. • The air-box was completely remanufactured with a special adaptor plate to fit. • Gavin welded up a new tank so that it could accommodate the taller 500 engine. The plastic tanks kept cracking. • All suspension components were overhauled, with OEM parts brought in from abroad to replace scratched stanchions and so-on. DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016 51
