EDITOR: ROLEY FOLEY
A Texas rancher was visiting a farmer
in Israel. The proud Israeli showed him
around. “Here is where I grow tomatoes,
cucumbers, and squash. Over there I built a
play set for my kids, next to the doghouse,”
the farmer said.
The land was tiny, and the Texan was
surprised by its small size. “Is this all your
land?” he asked.
“Yes,” the Israeli said proudly. “This is all
mine!”
“You mean this is it? This is all of it?” the
Texan said incredulously.
“Yes, yes, this is really all mine!”
“Well, son,” said the Texan, “back home I’d
get on my bike before the sun’d come up
and I’d ride and ride and ride, and when
the sun set, why, I’d only be halfway across
my land!”
“Oh, yes,” replied the Israeli farmer wistfully,
“I used to have a bike like that.”
Ride safely out there, see you on the trails.
HUB STUDS FOR ATV’S,
MANUFACTURED AT
SSS RACING
Wheel studs are the threaded fasteners that hold on
the wheels of many quads. They are semi-permanently
mounted directly to the quad hub, usually through the
hub. Wheel nuts are fastened onto the wheel stud to
secure the wheel. When a wheel is removed for tire
changes etc., the stud remains in the hub. These wheel
studs are manufactured from EN8 steel at SSS RACING,
the same material as the original quad studs. The hub
studs is R40 each, we also have the wheel nuts heavy
duty available.
2017 Polaris RZR XP 1000
What sets this 2017 Polaris RZR XP 1000 apart on
the outside is that it has remote reservoir shocks,
like on last year’s turbo models, new wheels and
wild colours. Inside, there is a 7-inch touch screen
called the “Ride Command” control center. Here it
features full GPS capabilities along with group ride
sharing, AM/FM radio, weather band, front and
rear camera views, selectable gauges and all the
normal instrumentation. The standard and 2017
Polaris RZR High lifter XP 1000s are available in
both 2 and 4 seats configurations. Turbo model
information has not been released yet.
30-inch tall Pro Armour tyres mounted on
beadlock wheels are the highlights of this RZR.
Inside the cab, a 6-point harness is standard and
rock sliders protect it from underneath. The Xtreme
Performance drive system has a special gated
shifter and lower “Low” gear making it for great
driving in the rocks and mud.
2017 HUSQVARNA ENDURO RANGE
LIMITLESS
ENDURO
Husqvarna Motorcycles has officially
unveiled their complete line-up of all-new
enduro models at the historic brand’s
homeland in Huskvarna, Sweden.
Each of the enduro machines has been
redesigned from the ground up for 2017 and they
tell us they feature the most advanced technology
they set the benchmark in terms of handling,
power, weight and aesthetics.
Featuring reduced weight, better handling
and dynamic ergonomics, Husqvarna’s 2-stroke
TX 125, TE 250 and 300 and 4-stroke FE 250,
350, 450 and 501 models offer functionality and
Swedish-inspired style.
All 2017 models are equipped with new lighter
and more compact engines, with the 4-stroke
range featuring traction control system as
experience the 2017 Husqvarna enduro range
represent the next step for the historic brand’s offroad
motorcycle range.
MAJOR CHASSIS UPGRADES
Husqvarna’s 2017 enduro models feature new
frames. Manufactured to the highest standards by
WP Performance Systems, the lighter frames offer
20% higher torsional rigidity for improved stability
and agility, while longitudinal stiffness is reduced
by 30% for improved suspension functionality.
Remaining unique to Husqvarna, the composite
sub-frame has been redesigned to fit the new
chassis. Made with 30% carbon fibre, the
subframe is 1 kg lighter than the previous
part. All 2017 Husqvarna models have
CNC machined triple clamps with an
offset of 22 mm fitted as standard.
Completing the chassis package the new
swingarm has a specifically machined
rear axle that allows for the chain adjuster
markings to be seen from above.
A major update in the suspension
department is the all-new WP Xplor 48
front forks. Featuring an open cartridge
layout with a spring in each leg and
split damping functions, all adjusters -
including an innovative pre-load adjuster
as standard – are situated on top of each
fork leg.
At the rear WP’s new DCC linkage
shock is 0.36 kg lighter than the previous
version.
Positioned 6 mm higher than on
Husqvarna’s motocross bikes, new selfcleaning
foot peg mounts prevent dirt
build-up. Along with the new ODI lock-on
grips and adjustable throttle assembly on
the 4-strokes.
High quality Brembo calipers and
controls combine with GSK discs to
deliver the stopping power. The rear
brake features a 24 mm piston (26 mm
on previous models) and a 10 mm longer
rear brake lever.
The airbox has a new design with
precisely positioned inlet ducts aimed at
preventing air deformation and ensuring
maximum airflow and protection. The
filter cage now features a simple fail proof
mounting system for safe and accurate
filter installation.
With futuristic new bodywork all
models feature Swedish-inspired design
and striking blue and yellow colours.
ALL-NEW 2-STROKE MACHINES
From the lighter TX 125 to the TE 300,
they say Husqvarna’s 2017 enduro
models introduce a new era in 2-stroke
technology. All engines have been
redesigned from the ground up. Lighter
and more compact, they feature a
completely new construction that focuses
on mass centralisation. Updated pistons
are designed to match the reworked
cylinders, while new crankshafts and
counter balancer shafts significantly
reduced vibrations.
A major upgrade across the 2017
2-stroke range is the new 38 mm flat slide
Mikuni TMX carburettor. They say that the
new Mikuni carburettor is less sensitive to
temperature and altitude changes.
One of the most significant upgrades
for 2017 is the lightweight electric start
system, which is now placed and well
protected under the engine on all the TE
models. The system can also be fitted to
the TX 125 as an optional extra, available
from Husqvarna Accessories.
A complete new exhaust system on the
TX 125 is designed to match the specific
characteristics of the new engines to
deliver top-level performance. The larger
displacement TE models have a new
header for optimum durability.
For the smaller displacement TX 125
the gearbox is completely redesigned.
All the updates have brought massive
reduction in weight across Husqvarna’s
2017 2-stroke range.
4-STROKES THAT REACH NEW HEIGHTS
For 2017 all of Husqvarna’s 4-stroke enduro
machines feature redesigned engines that reach new
standards in terms of performance and reliability.
Focused on providing enduro specific and riderfriendly
power characteristics, all engines are lighter
and more compact. Fitted as standard, unique
traction control system allow further adjustment
of engine characteristics to perfectly suit rider
preference and track conditions.
In repositioning major engine components
Husqvarna Motorcycles’ engineers tell us that
they have managed to further enhance both the
performance and handling of these new bikes.
The 2017 Husqvarna FE models feature reworked
cylinder heads, updated cylinders and new
crankshafts, which guarantees long service intervals
of 135 hours.
The Keihin Engine Management System (EMS) on
all 4-strokes is specifically designed to be smaller,
lighter and faster at processing data. It integrates
selectable engine maps via the switch on the
handlebar as well as traction control. Combined with
the new gear sensor, power delivery is tailored for
each gear.
An all-new Keihin 42 mm throttle body sees its
injector placed to provide an even more efficient
flow of fuel to the combustion chamber.
All 4-stroke models are also fitted with updated
header pipes and shorter mufflers, which are now
placed 50 mm closer to the engine. The redesigned
enduro-specific gearbox now has a gear sensor that
allows for specific engine mapping for each gear.
All the latest updates in the 2017 FE engines have
brought significant weight savings, ranging from 0.7
kg to 1.7 kg.
Holeshots Garith explains the electronics.
On the 17th July, our Zen Birkby
joined the guys from Holeshot
Motorcycles and attended the
second of three Triumph I RIDE
training days for 2016. I-Ride has
2 facilities nationally in JHB and
Cape Town where they do basic
adventure training and then they up
the ante with level 1 and 2 for more
advanced rider skills.
Triumph started I RIDE just
over a year ago and you don’t
have to be a Triumph owner to
tag along. On the day there were
people on all makes and models.
Zen was loaned the fantastic
Triumph 800XCX for the event. The
standard bike was too tall for his
short legs, so they gave him the
lower XCX Lowride.
The lowrides suspension is 30mil
shorter and the seat 20 millimeters
shorter. This absolutely made a
huge difference on the road and
on the training day. shorter riders
should look at this option.
Says Zen:
Four instructors looked after four groups,
each consisting of about 6 riders per
group.
I was placed in a group with the friendly
instructor Michael De Klerk who was
zooting around on an Explorer.
It’s a great day out - well thought out
with practical tips about taking your
beasty out in the dirt.
First up was the Slalom course where
we had to ride through cones to practice
counter-steering and balance. its good
fun and requires quite a bit of body input.
Next up was emergency braking with abs
on and then abs off. This shows riders
the difference between the two systems.
Interesting.
The fun part was the sandpit where
we had to get through some every soft
sand in a 20m long pit. Momentum and
constant throttle was key, a few of our
group put it down but no bikes or bodies
were harmed.
In typical Zen Form, team Dirt and Trail
won the slow race. Our Ride Fast crew go
fast - we like the more sedate stuff. It is a
race - on you marks, get set - go and the
last to the gate without putting feet down
or dropping bikes wins. This teaches the
riders clutch, brake and throttle control
and, of course, balance.
By that time, our brains were pretty
fried with all the info we had to take in,
so then it was time for a short out-ride to
an interesting cave on the 700 hectare
property to give everyone a break.
Then it was time for the dreaded u
turn section which was a little nerve
wracking for some, but we all got through
safely. You have to do a U turn on a very
narrow pathway - and when you get it
right, they make it narrower, and then
even narrower... a couple of bikes were
dropped during this exercise, but nice and
slow so it was all mostly injured pride...
Parallel logs, placed like a rut in the road
were up next and - again we all sailed
through the obstacle. After this a tasty
boerie roll and cold drink was lunch. The
final task of the day was the skills course
to put everything we learned into practice.
Good fun and everyone gets involved to
cheer the participants along.
So there you have it - The I-Ride school
is well supported by all the Triumph
dealers. It’s a fantastic introduction to the
great pastime that is adventure riding.
Thanks to Holeshot motorcycles for
dragging us along, a fun day out for sure
and - very informative.
going along.
EXPLORING THE NEW
EXPLORER
EXPLORING THE NEW
The new Triumph Explorer XCA
Last month, you would have seen our preview on Triumphs big mamma
Explorer. There, we promised to get our mitts onto it for a proper local
test. We did exactly that – and we are pretty glad that we did. The new
bike is a significant leap forward in Big Triumph development…
To get a balanced feel for the new bike, we roped in 3 other testers. Rob
Davies is a social rider who spends most of his time on his nutbox 950 KTM
Super Enduro, Kurt Beine, who is one of the most experienced adventure guys
out there, having ridden and tested everything dirtworthy over the years – and
our mate Don Gibbons who rides a 2012 Explorer. We dragged his bike along
for comparative purposes.
Now at the risk of upsetting the good people at Triumph South Africa, we
are going to say the following. With the Tiger 800XC, Triumph created what is,
arguably one of the best all round bikes on the planet – for both dirt and tar. With
their first Explorers, they made a bike that was fairly capable off-road and a gem
on the tar. Is that a fair comment? You certainly can take the old 1200’s off-road
and they fare really well, but you also need to keep your wits about you because
it tends to feel quite heavy and – it runs out of suspension in the rough stuff.
Enter the 2016 models. Big upgrades. You can read all about the techy stuff
in last months issue, mostly electronic, but Triumph has also replaced the
suspension with WP bouncers front and rear…
Our motley Crew selected what is probably the windiest (as in windy, like
the wind) days of winter to do the test. We also selected a route with a great
selection of tar, good and bad gravel for this test. Quite possibly a bit rougher
than most people would ride on a bike like this.
We spent a great few hours riding and everyone got a chance to put her
through the paces. After the very first slightly gnarly dirt section, we gave the bike
to “The Don” and sent him back down the hill again – and asked for his opinion.
“This bike feels lighter and way more nimble
than mine. And how cool are these pegs?” The
new XC boasts proper, wide off-road foot pegs
and footing is way better than on the old model.
That was the first sign that the new Triumph was
better. We aren’t quite sure about the colour….
it’s just like that on the jeeps that invaded France
on D Day. No-one complained about it then, so we
won’t complain now. Our route continued through
some obscure mealie field roads and onto a short
road blitz to “test out the top end.”
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016 25

The big triple effortlessly accelerates
past the 200KPH mark before we hit
the end – and everyone comments
on the better ergonomics and wind
protection. “It’s like riding in a bubble”
Glenn Foleys comment, “and nothing
beats the smoothness of that big triple
engine – and the sound…” Triumph has
dome some sneaky stuff to make the bike
more distance friendly – the redesigned
electric (yup) screen must have been
through zillions of kilometres in a wind
tunnel, it’s really a pleasure – no wind
buffeting. The seat, bars peg ratio is even
better than the predecessor – and for the
more mature riders who enjoy creature
comforts – you have to try the heated
grips and seat – you’ll have a warm botty
for sure!!
Steering is light, linear in action and
really responsive. Picking the bike up
mid-corner to change lines happens
with the speed of thought, yet the front
end always feels planted and reassuring.
The bike feels light and short, belying
its chassis specs, not as long or tall
or heavy as its numbers might imply.
Credit the chassis updates; the frame’s
basically unchanged, but the WP fork
is 10mm shorter than before to quicken
up the steering geometry and shrink the
wheelbase a touch.
New engine mapping seems to have
cured fuelling niggles from the previous
generation. This powerplant is a joy to
use, strong pulling and always smoothrunning,
yet even with the increases
power output should remain in the middle
of the adventure-touring spectrum—more
than some, less than others. That’s not
a complaint; there’s plenty of go-power
starting way down low, and power builds
smoothly to the 10,000-rpm redline, up
500 revs from before.
Back onto the dirt and it’s time for
some long fast winding gravel – the kind
of stuff every adventurer enjoys. A brief
stop to adjust the electronics from road
to gravel and off we go….On the subject
of electronics, we have to comment on
the far more user-friendly electronics
package that Triumph offers on this bike.
Big buttons and an extra-large display
allow the rider to easily see what mode
you are in, suspension settings and soon
– and best of all it has an auto mode
that reads the terrain, load etc and quietly
26 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

2nd opinion: Kurt
My first experience on the 1200 Explorer was pretty
much that is an amazing bike on tar, that triple motor
is just so addictive, but I was not wild about it on
dirt, good dirt roads, no problem, but the tough stuff,
nah...Then I got to ride the 2016 revised model this
weekend, waaaay better on dirt, that WP suspension
coupled with all sorts of electronic wizardry has
made a massive difference, over corrugations it
is a lot smoother, and the route Glenn took us on,
there are sections I would have said no ways, the
Explorer is going to battle, but it did not, it soaked
up everything that was thrown at it. Out on tar the
new electrically adjustable revised screen is worlds
better than the older model, and the dash, if you
cannot find the information you are scrolling for,
you don’t need it. I did not get time to learn the new
informative dash, was too busy having fun, but it has
a lot....When the 800 XC was launched I loved it, did
not think it could be improved on, yet Triumph did
with the XCX, when the 1200 Explorer was launched
I loved it too, barring it’s (in my opinion) lack of
dirt ability, was waiting to see how Triumph would
improve on this model, and they have, suspension,
screen, electronic gadgets, nice wide footpegs, and
more. The XCA just got better.
adjusts everything for you. There are
settings for everything – rain, street,
dirt, suspension settings for sport,
street and comfort, ABS, traction
control… The list goes on – and we
have to admit that, even though we are
not huge fans of too many electronics,
it all kinda made sense and made
a big difference to the overall ride.
Electronics are the way of the future
and technology that is being designed
in GP racing is making its way onto
every day motorcycles. All aimed at
making bikes safer. Cool huh?
That big triple cylinder mill just
quietly goes about its’ business as
the brilliant WP suspension soaks up
everything from big ruts to horrible
corrugations. This is probably one of
the most refined rides you’ll have on a
DP motorcycle.
Fast sweeping corners were
effortlessly guzzled – and on the odd
occasion that the sand monsters
lurked, the brakes worked just
perfectly.
Our road eventually emerged
near the famous Rhino park venue
near Rayton where we stopped in
to share war stories and enjoyed a
burger. It was great to see so many
other adventure riders supporting the
restaurant; it’s not only for dirtbikers.
Then the debate started – which way
home? Road or tar? We opted for a
50/50 split.
Here are a few hard facts about
the new Explorer:
· This bike offers some of the best
wind protection of any adventure bike
ridden to date.
· It has an astonishing, but easy
to use array of electronic options,
including the cool battery operated
screen.
· The focus is on rider comfort, the
updated ergo’s make a huge difference
for long hours in the saddle. Stand-up
riding is perfectly comfortable.
· Power delivery is very similar to the
old model. The Ride by Wire system
is significantly smoother than on the
previous model. The Triple engine
makes very unique power in this
segment.
· The WP suspension is probably the
biggest single update on this machine.
It has changed the whole character of
the bike.
· Triumph has a full selection of
adventure accessories for this bike.
· We got just more than 300 km’s on
a full tank of fuel (20 and a bit litres).
We are not going to lie, this is a
big bike, but Triumphs improvements
have made it very easy to ride, road or
gravel.
If you are in the market for a quality
Adventurer, to explore far flung place
on gravel roads, or to cruise the
freeways long distance in absolute
comfort, best you go and ride one
of these. It’s a very civilized bike and
a great addition to the proper big
adventure segment.
Give me one send me through the
Karoo to the Cape, I’ll be happy as a
sandboy. Point me at some gravel and
watch the dust… a great new machine.
Everyone really enjoyed it... Time for
a mulitiple big adventure story - we’ll
get em all together soon...
on the final day.
After Friday’s heavy rainfalls, the final
offroad racing day of Red Bull Romaniacs
greeted the riders with blue skies…
and deep mud baths. Pain, cramps and
exhaustion made for a tough final, with
the resting areas located uphill covered in
mud and sheep muck.
In the Gold class, 17 out of 51 riders
made it to the start of the last day at
06.30am. Jarvis was the only British rider
left in the Top 10, followed by Gomez
(2nd, ESP), Young (3rd, SA), Roman (4th,
ESP), Bouverie (5th, SA), Cyprian (6th,
CZE), Teasdale (7th, SA), Leon (8th, ESP),
Curtis (9th, USA) and Kovacs (10th, ROU).
Jarvis started first with an overall lead
of 30 minutes, playing it cool and letting
Young and Alfredo Gomez pass him to
plow the trail ahead of him.
Young was the fastest to take off with
the best riding times, closely followed by
Gomez. In the gnarly sections before the
Service Point, Jarvis decided to speed
up, rapidly gaining time on his rivals once
again. Young eventually passed him,
taking the line honors for the day while
Jarvis played it safe and rode towards his
fifth Red Bull Romaniacs victory.
“It is incredible to get a fifth win,”
he said. “The last couple of years I’ve
been a bit unlucky so I’m just happy to
get another win, can’t believe I can still
do it - even at 41! I struggled a bit with
concentration being the last day and
worrying about things going wrong but I
tried to stay positive and focused on the
track. Wade was flying, he caught me
early and brought Gomez with him so we
were riding together for a bit. I managed
to get a bit of a gap again on the hard bits
but then made mistakes after the service
point and Wade got by me. It’s good to
see the young riders coming up, they’re
so fast, some of them, but at the Red Bull
Romaniacs, experience counts. They will
be more Jonny’s problem than mine!”
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016 31

Gomez, who finished the day third, took second
overall. The Spaniard delivered a consistent top
performance over the five days. “The rain last night
was impressive and we did not know what to expect
from the track today,” he explained. “The first 30km
were fast and fluent riding, but the Gold-loop before
the service point was probably the hardest one of
the race.” When Gomez met a Red Bull Romaniacs
track manager at the Service Point, he was furious:
“You can’t throw this kind of stuff at us on the
fourth day…!” He also commented that this was his
toughest Red Bull Romaniacs so far.
Young finished the day ahead of Gomez and
snatched the overall third place from Mario Roman.
“I got off to a good start and just pushed hard
through the day,” he said. “I had a collapsed moose
just before the end but I was happy with the day.
It was a very tough race but I enjoyed it, it’s good
to be at the finish line and I’m really happy with my
finish today and hopefully will be 3rd overall” Red
Bull Romaniacs rookie Mario Roman delivered
an impressive performance for a newcomer, even
though his crash took all podium hopes away from
him. “Today was not so good for me, I had a huge
crash looking at my GPS and hitting a hole,” he
said. “I tried hard after that but it wasn’t possible to
overtake Wade today. I’m happy with my first Red
Bull Romaniacs but a little sad for today’s mistakes
because I was riding well the other days.”
Our very own Kirsten Landman became the first
female rider to complete the Red Bull Romaniacs
Silver class. Having not finished in 2015, Landman
trained all year for this. Despite surviving the
toughest day of riding ever for her on Day 3, she
showed consistent results throughout all four Off
road days and the prologue.
5 OF SA IN TOP 16 and Kirsty makes history.
By Elza Thiart.
Five SA riders finished in the Top 16 in the Gold Class while Kirsten
Landman made a little history... 7 of the 8 South African entrants in the
Bronze Class finished the race.
3rd: Wade Young (Sherco) claimed his second Romaniacs podium when
he finished third after winning on both the first and the fourth day.
5th: Scott Bouverie (KTM) posted his best result by finishing 5th
7th: Travis Teasdale (KTM) had to settle for 7th after missing a check
point on the last day and being penalized more than 4 hours.
11th: Kyle Flanagan (Sherco) competed in his first ‘Romaniacs’ and after
losing time, he fought back to finish 11th.
16th: Pongola boy Barend Erasmus (KTM) also participated for the first
time in this event and was 16th.
Kirsten Landman (KTM) not only finished in the Silver Class but became
the first lady ever to complete this event in the Silver Class. She was 48th.
Riaan van der Walt (KTM) finished 75th in this class.
BRONZE: For most Bronze riders, it is not about position, but about
finishing. It might be a somewhat ‘easier’ and shorter race for them, but it
is still four tough days of racing and to just to finish, is achievement.
46th: Brett Prawde
52nd: Mark Galliers
71st: Dave Taylor
84th: Jack Brotherton
89th: Charles Harrison
104th: Calvin Crick
137th: Charles Bresler
Mike Varrie: DSQ
It is great to see just how well our riders are doing when competing
against the best in the world. South Africans - tougher than tough!
SYRINGA MX TRACK
On a recent Photo shoot at Syringa Being a club race I thought it
MX track, I saw a list of race events would be quiet… well if anyone
on the notice board outside the thought MX is dead they are sorely
clubhouse. A quick word with Grant mistaken. It was 7AM and the entire
Foley who is looking after the track parking and pit area was full, with
and he invited us to come and do a cars still coming in with trailers
club MX race.
loaded with bikes. Not wanting to
Doing a proper MX race has do this alone, I invited my son to
always been on my bucket list, and I come and race his YZ125 in the
was soon going to be crossing it off. High school class as he is also a
I did a Night race at Dirt Bronco’s road rider and wanted to give the
several years ago on a TTR 230 MX thing a go. I was expecting just
Yamaha but that doesn’t count. a handfull of people to be honest,
Shortly after we accepted, I but it was awesome to have packed
thought that I might have just start lines for all of the 9 categories
bitten off more than I can chew. from 50cc to the older VMX brigade,
Motorcross is not my strong point, who I might ad aren’t scared to
I’m more of a tar man myself but wring those old machines necks.
love to get a bit dirty now and then. At least I was not alone in the
So challenge accepted. Race day nerves department, as I saw my
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - CARD FACILITIES AVAILABLE

I was lucky enough to borrow the
CRF250 R that Dirt And Trail had on test
recently and rode in the support class.
Remember, I’m a complete newby at this
– and to be fair it’s been about 3 years
since I even went riding in the dirt.
At first it was rather daunting, but
by lap two of practice I had settled in.
Practice went better than expected for
both of us as we actually cleared most of
the jumps, but the right hander under the
bridge caught us out every time. How the
guys get through ruts like they are on rails
is beyond me.
Now the cool thing about the Syringa
racers is they give you 5 heats of 5 laps
so it’s flat out all the way which made for
some awesome racing for the spectators
instead of three 20min moto’s, which
suited me just fine.
The track was so well prepared and
turned out to be easier to ride than what
I expected. It was the first time that I’d
ridden the Honda - I was quiet impressed
with how smooth and easy the bike was
to ride. I think a 450 would have certainly
put me in the bushes...
We had a great time racing against the
weekend warriors, the lekker thing about
racing or riding in the support class is the
fact that it is not super serious - nobody
really cares who beats who and most are
just out to have fun - young and old alike.
This is unlike the serious classes where
it is all race face and GO!!!!
Adrian had the time of his life. During
practice, everytime he hit the corner he
would stall and fall over, he wasn’t getting
hurt so I was allowed to laugh, you see
in road racing we ride with an “upside
down” gear box, and it took him awhile to
remember this. But once he had figured it
out he was on it.
Heat one I was soon on the ground
with laughter again as he stalled on the
line. Heat two and three got better and
better and I could see this by the size
of his smile as he was jumping further
and getting quicker. until lap four where
confidence got in the way of skill - and
he had a mighty crash... but it’s all part of
the game, bruises and ego injury...
Great to see the medics on standby,
they gave him the all clear.
All in all - a great days racing. The
track is awesome fun to ride, all well
marshalled and controlled and the
whole vibe is just so cool. The kiosk is
inexpensive and the burgers are great.
Get down there sometime - watch the fun
- or go and take part. R350 for the day,
no licence needed. And if you want some
training, give Grant a shout.
The track is open Wednesdays
Saturdays and public holidays.
Give Grant Foley a call on 071536 5512
or email them on syringamxpark@gmail.
FLASHING
YOUR MOTORCYCLE, QUAD OR SXS
Cost effective horsepower gains
Fire It Up Motorcycles in Fourways has developed a tuning tool for most modern motorcycles.
It’s a plug and play system, cost effective with huge gains. Words: Glenn Foley Pics: Kyle Lawrenson
In order to explain this lot we are going
to have to go back in time a bit and explain
how things work…
In the old days, before the advent of
fuel injection and CDI (electronic) modules,
to gain real horsepower, there were a
few pretty complicated ways to get more
power from stock bikes.
Carb Jetting, profiling camshafts, bigger
bore pistons, gas flowing and performance
pipes were just a few examples of how
it was, and is still done. Stepping further
back – you could advance timing on the
old unreliable points system, but often the
bikes would run lean…
These are all Mechanical solutions – and
they can (read can) affect reliability because
you are opening the engines and changing
factory tolerances and specs.
Make sense?
Most modern bikes, quads side by
sides etc these days (obviously excluding
two-strokes) are fuel injected and all now
have electronic ECU boxes. An engine
control unit (ECU) is a type of electronic
control unit that controls a series of
actuators on an internal combustion engine
to ensure optimal engine performance. It
does this by reading values from
a multitude of
sensors within the engine bay, interpreting
the data using multidimensional
performance maps (called lookup tables),
and adjusting the engine actuators
accordingly. Before ECUs, air-fuel
mixture, ignition timing, and idle speed
were mechanically set and dynamically
controlled by mechanical and pneumatic
means.
The factories are pretty smart at
electronically governing their machines. So
– let’s say a bike builder builds an engine
– and tests it on the bench. As long as
the engine produces power within certain
prescribed parameters it is signed off and
then installed. Then all the ECU governors
etc are put in place so that it meets all of
the emission laws. Are you there?
In ANY mass production, performance
will slip a bit – so even though a bike, sxs
etc feels “Hey Wow” out of the box – it has
the potential to be significantly better. Did
you know that even when
your throttle is
Professional ECU Flash Tuning Benefits:
• Increased RPM Limiter. Some racers or
motorcyclists want to increase their RPM
limiter to achieve a higher speed.
• Improved Throttle Response. Once the
motorcycle has been correctly mapped, the
throttle response is immediately improved, no
more flat spots and instant acceleration.
• Optimised Ignition Timing. Adjusted to match
your performance requirements according to
the fuel used.
• Faster Quick Shifter Changes
• Performance Increases of up to 20%
wide open, your bikes brain keeps it shut
just a little? So you are not actually getting
max performance from your bike.
Until very recent times, it was virtually
impossible to change the factory settings
on the ECU systems. You had to employ
the services of a Bazzaz or Power
Commander box in order to adjust the
fuelling and so on and to be absolutely fair,
those systems have proved to be fantastic,
but there were still limits as to how far you
could tune.
Enter the guys from Fire It Up.
This innovative lot have spent a great
deal of time studying ignition systems
system and, working with partners in
the automotive industry and some
smart people in Europe. They have
developed software to alter your bikes
power info. Cool huh? But what makes
it unique? They tell us that they have
designed it specifically for South
African conditions – especially
in JHB where we have a very
unique air pressure. Don’t
forget, all bikes come into our
country with European Maps,
not South African Maps.
So if you have – let’s say a GS
that rates standard at 107 BHP, by
42 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

Fire It Up can now even flash Turbo and
normally aspirated SXS’s and quads
simply writing a South African Map ( Language) and
the bike being set up correctly by adjusting the Fuel
tables, throttle maps, ignition tables, torque limiters
etc, gains of up to 10HP.
The biggest difference however is the overall feel
and rideability of the bike.
On one well know championship
leading S1000RR drag bike for example – power
gains of up to 10 BHP increase in power have been
achieved over and above a normal ‘piggy back’
system.
Best of the lot – not a spanner is lifted, so there
is no need to be concerned about spanner rash on
any nuts or bolts – and your bike remains mostly
intact throughout the process.
And there is more…
With Adventure bike, top speeds are not always
your major concern. These guys will chat to you
about what you use your bike for – so if you are
a tar rider, you want a bit of torque and more top
speed. For dirt use, you need smoother toque and
perhaps a bit less at the top – they will them map
your bike to suit your riding needs.
As a follow up:
We have arranged for two bikes to head
for their shop – both completely different.
One is a KTM 1050, which as you
know is seriously governed in order
to meet the under 18 horsepower
limits in Europe. When we went
to the launch of that bike, we
were told that it is basically
impossible to get more
horses, even though it has
the famed RC8 engine.
The second is a maniacal
Can –Am Commander Turbo
side by side. We’ll get the bikes
owners to give us their impressions
and feedback.
In the interim – www.
fire-itup.co.za or Craig
0828832872
(011) 467-0737
So what’s there to lose?
Non invasive surgery – and in terms of cash for
horsepower relatively inexpensive.
FIRE IT UP has already found 10% extra power on
our KTM 1050, just on the throttle alone. Watch
this space for the full story in next month’s issue.
Apart from the Flash Tuning bay,
Fire It Up also have an immaculate
ADVENTURE
RIDING
IN THE RED
A FAMILY OF HONDA’S
44 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

Honda Wing Zambesi are a
pro-active bunch who have
just run a huge campaign to
move 200 little CRF 230’s.
They are doing it again with
3 of Honda’s other dirtbikes,
the CRF250R, the CRF150R
and the entry level CRF 50. We
borrowed all of them, roped in
the family and went for a cool
day out at the track...
The day was spent hooning around the
Rhino Park track with reckless abandon –
a perfect, controlled environment for the
testers to enjoy. We roped in the services
of Mrs “Slush” Shwim to check out the
150, Kyle “Crashalot” Foley to ride the 50
and then Honda wings Llewellyn Chipps
traded saddles with our Kyle Lawrenson
on the 250.
The Bikes:
The CRF 250R is a very competitive MX
bike - but, it’s also such a fun bike to play
on. R79000.00.
It comes with three ignition modes; to
switch between the ignition maps, the
bike must be running and the maps are
toggled via a button on the right side of
the handlebar next to the throttle. After
pressing and holding the button, it blinks
a code signifying which map has been
selected–one flash for the stock map, two
for the mellow map, and three times for
the aggressive map.
For family riding, we chose the mellow
map, putting along after your lightie, you
don’t need big performance but, other
than that, we’ve never found much of
a use for it. Like most wannabe racers,
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016 45

we are always looking to get the most power out of any
bike possible. However, for the dry, dusty, slick track, the
stock map makes good all-around power, and does well
in most conditions. The aggressive map makes better
power all across the board, but for a less aggressive
rider, the stock mapping is just that much easier.
It has all the bells and whistles that you expect from
Honda, a great engine, very nimble chassis, feels
incredibly small and light, brakes and suspension are
top drawer.
The CRF150: R53000.00
Dynamite in a small package.
Now here is a bike that we feel was way ahead of its
time when it was released. In 2007 Honda revolutionized
the stagnant mini class by introducing the first fourstroke
competition mini into the small bore ranks.
Borrowing technology from its proven 250 and 450
models, Honda released the CRF150R. Just like the
larger four-strokes, the 150 delivers a torquey, userfriendly
motor that puts the power to the ground in a
way unlike any of the two-strokes – and it has remained
virtually unchanged throughout the years of production. In
2012, they changed the carburettor for better fueling and
that’s about it. It’s a great track bike for a smaller rider
or a youngster who is looking for a very aggressive ride.
We’ve seen a few of these bikes out on the trails – and
in more experienced hands, they are huge fun. But they
can be a handful in thick sand and gnarly terrain, because
of the small wheels and lots of spinning. On the up side,
they are really small, light and manouverable – ideal for
a smaller rider who wants the thrill of killing the track.
The power to weight ratio is very impressive – kinda like
a pit-bike on steroids… with great breaks and fantastic
suspension. And in the right hands amazing fun to ride.
Entry level school fees…
This is no MX bike – but… Finding the correct entry
level motorcycle for junior can be quite tricky. For
the MX track a li’l 2-stroke is just the answer, but
most parents and kids are looking for a bike that
introduces the kid before scaring the daylights
out of him or her – and a four-stroke is the perfect
answer. It’s not an MX bike, but the grin factor for a
little guy or girl is priceless – and it’s smooth easy
power will build the lighties confidence before hitting
the tabletops. The beauty of a four-stroke is that
the power is not overly aggressive, but it makes a
fair amount of torque to climb the jumps and work
its way through mud and sand. The 50 is an ideal
tool for the little guys and gals who are starting out.
Semi auto, 3 speed, easy to kick start with decent
suspension and quality finish. And little Kyle went
everywhere that we did… just a bit slower, always
with a big grin on his face…
Conclusions:
Mom on the 150, dad on the 250 and lightie on the
50 – moving up through the ranks – what could be
better? Motorcycles are fun and to quote a serious
Cliché’ –‘The family that plays together…’ ok you
got it? But it’s true.
Nothing better than riding bike, it beats the heck
out of watching soapies or trawling the internet. Get
a bike for the whole family…
but few compare with this piece of beauty built
by enthusiast Gavin Van Der Riet.
We saw the bike briefly at The Kyalami
motor show and we made an appointment
to get some more in depth info on the build.
What we assumed was a bolt on job is
actually a remanufactured motorcycle from
the ground up.
Gav saw one of these project bikes in the
USA, but that would cost about 17000 dollars,
and he figured he could build one here.
So what is it?
This is a hybrid. It’s a CR500 engine in a
CRF250R aluminium Frame.
Now we are not going to bore you with all of
the details – but we are going to give you some
of the detail of what goes into a build like this.
• Gavin sourced four old CR500’s and
bought them. They were stripped with the
best engine parts from each bike used for the
rebuild.
• He sourced a scrap CRF250R rolling
chassis.
Chassis:
• We had an inkling of what was involved but
we were left thunderstruck at the amount of
work involved. The frame needed to be cut
and extended to house the big 500cc banger.
This work was undertaken by Gavin and all
of the welding was done by Dreyer welding-
076-129-6426. The biggest challenge is to get
the sprockets perfectly aligned.
• Mounting points were relocated and the
headstay bracket relocated.
• The air-box was completely
remanufactured with a special adaptor plate
to fit.
• Gavin welded up a new tank so that it
could accommodate the taller 500 engine.
The plastic tanks kept cracking.
• All suspension components were
overhauled, with OEM parts brought in from
abroad to replace scratched stanchions and
so-on.
Note the decomp mod.
The brake lever is
fabricated to fit...
• All parts were bead blasted
for factory finish.
• Every original bolt was
cleaned and zinc plated.
• Elbow grease on every part.
• New wheels and hubs were
sourced and Gavin did the lacing
in his workshop with a dowl to
ensure they were all true.
Remember that throughout
all of this, the engine is installed
and removed to make sure that
everything is perfectly aligned.
Engine
The original engines were
stripped down with the best topend
and gearbox components
utilised. Every single bearing
was pressed out and replaced.
• Gavin took all the bits in to
JB engineering in Randburg
for the work done. The casings
were skimmed and re-fitted
perfectly, but there was a lot of
work involved.
• Gavin went through every
single gear in the box with a
micrometer and selected the
gears that were best to spec.
New clutch and plates.
• The bottom end was built.
• Top-end included a new
sleeve, 90 ml piston kit.
The head was chamfered to
accommodate the oversize
piston.
• The cylinder head
was modified to include a
decompression valve. The valve
prevents kickback when starting,
which often resulted in cracked
crank casings on the standard
bikes.
• Engine assembled.
Then comes the properly iffy
bits…
• An extender was imported
from Poland so that the exhaust
has enough clearance.
• The oversized radiators
needed to be cut and welded in
order to fit correctly.
• Everything had to be
perfectly lined up and spaced so
that none of the water pipes or
cables rubbed.
• The stock brake lever was
cut and remanufactured to fit.
• The suspension was
completely stripped down,
replacement parts were
sourced, imported, polished,
manufactured and reassembled.
Was it all worth it? We think so
– a year and a half of love, what
a result… what a beautiful bike.
build, please go and have a look
SACHA NAUDE TAKES
THE MX1 SAMXN POINTS
LEAD IN GAUTENG!
Syringa - Round 4 of the SA National MX Champs,
took place on Saturday 2 July and was a massive
success. After a little winter chill in the morning, the
day warmed up over a fast and unforgiving track. It was
hard-pack and technical and resulted in some of the
best racing of the season, as well as some minor spills.
Sacha Naude was on fire in MX1, and pulled a huge
lead in the 2nd heat, while stand-out rider of the day in
the premier classes was David Goosen. He was also
on the podium in MX1 but entered for the first time in
MX2 and took the win in that division. He was followed
by a recently on-form Kerim Fitzgerald, with Anthony
Raynard in third.
The MX3 division saw the return of Ryan Hunt to the
winner’s podium. He placed ahead of Ian Topliss in
second, while Brett Bircher came in third.
In the ladies division there was an encouraging 10
ladies who entered, and it was Nanda Clowes who
edged ahead of the perennial Brittany Cuthbert, with
Kayla Raaff in third.
Jordan Dewdney into second, with
Jordan Van Wyk in third.
It was a combined regional and
national event, with a total of 184
entries. The track manager Grant
Foley put on an excellent effort, and
the day was a huge success.
RACING IN THE cape
Readers ride
By Gavin Mc Laughlin.
www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za
Western Cape Off Roads Romanda Marais, Clive Crouse, Rene
Robertson, Ockert Swart and the rest of the crew welcomed us to
another great event at Swartbergvlei 4x4, a very cool venue situated
between Yzerfontein and Langebaan in the Cape.
The track is 99.9% sand and about 10m of hard pack, so the boys
and girls who get to spend time at Atlantis were in their element.
This venue is open to all and worth a trip out with friends and family,
they have accommodation on site to really enjoy your stay.
www.swartbergsvlei.co.za.
After the cold weather and heavy rainfall it was the perfect day for
racing.
The day started nice and early, with the bikes sent off first. The First
lap was difficult with the sun in your eyes for a good part of the lap.
It made it tricky to hang cable and at the same time see what lies
beneath the sand. Lap 2 was an absolute blast as the track opened up
and the riders were more spread out. Brett Lewis, Calvin Wiltshire
and David Ellis were the first to come past halfway through the lap,
man these guys were on it, they make it look easy. Then surprise
- surprise, Caleb Tennant who decided to come and try out an
off-road race came flying through the pack and on corrected time
claimed 1st overall for the day, with David and Calvin following up
in 2nd and 3rd.
I just want to make special mention of a few riders who have improved
in leaps and bounds, Matt van Galen, Jeandre Radyn, Troy
Sullivan, Devon Arndt, always great to see hard work paying off. The
front guy’s will need to watch out for these youngsters.
In the 50cc class there was some great riding for the boys and girls
with little wheels in the sand. Reinhardt Van Der Merwe claimed
the top step, followed by Jareigh Van Lill and the very impressive
Jaimee-Lee Wassung.
The 65cc class is always fun to watch as these kids only know one
way and that is hang cable until you see the flag… it was another
one in the bag for the hard charging Tristan Hedgecock, followed by
Krige Van Merwe and the ever improving Matthew Jackson.
The reason these kids improve so quickly is quite simple, they don’t
stop practicing, keep it up boys.
Brett Lewis
Brodie Jacobs
Brodie Jacobs
The 85 Jnr crown went to a young rider who showed a clean set
of wheels and led from the front Max Ledgerwood, followed by
Michan Van Lill and Etienne Zybrand.
85 Snr’s showed some good results for Pieter De Wet winning the
class with Tristan Vervaart on his new bike taking 2nd and Frans
Burger 3rd.
125’s - was won by Troy Sullivan who finished 11th overall, chased
by Juha Van Lill and Tehgan Hindmarch.
200cc - Dominating this class on the day was Calvin Wiltshire completing
6 laps and taking another class win, Jeandre Radyn in 2nd
with a really awesome ride and Devon Arndt in 3rd.
Caleb Tennant
56 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

Snr’s – The man of the hour was on a Yellow
machine, which I might add looked pimped
out there in the sand. Clint Rieper took another
win. Could this be the perfect season with 2
rounds to go? He was followed by the ginger
ninja Ockert Swart who came back strong
towards the end. 3rd with a very well deserved
podium finish was Willem Visser.
Masters - 2 minutes separated the front 3 over
3.5 hours of racing. Martin Lourens took the
class win followed by Chris Handt and Johan
Van Lill.
Open - Great riding from the back of the pack
put Caleb Tennant on the top step followed by
David Ellis and Brett Lewis who was leading
earlier in the day before having a big off… he
stuck it out for a 3rd.
Ladies - A big congratulations to Kiona Robertson
on completing 6 laps and winning the class
with Liza Vianello 2nd and Chloe Stier 3rd.
Quads - These boy’s and girl’s set off flying,
Kevin Crouse taking the early lead and pulling
a gap over Brodie Jacobs Lendert von Waltsleben
while Maryke Spies quietly set about her
business, 1 whoop at a time. In the end Anton
Van Der Berg took the overall win with Brodie
Jacobs just keeping Maryke at bay for the Q1
win, Maryke 2nd and Jasper Visser 3rd.
In all it was another great day out, thanks to
WCOC, Clive, Rene, Romanda and Ockert.
Thanks to all the sponsors and supporters of
our sport and club.
Big thanks to Grant Hulley from Pyranha Racing
BOTSWANA DESERT RACE CAUSES
A SHUFFLE IN THE NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS
As predicted, the outcome of the recent Toyota Kalahari
Botswana 1000 Desert Race resulted in the standings of the
SA National Cross Country Championship for Motorcycles and
Quads to be shuffled and forecasts a title battle of note at the
final two rounds of the championship.
The recent Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race (TDR
1000) formed the third and fourth rounds of the 2016 national
series and those who survived the tough three-day challenge
bagged a heap of valuable points for their efforts. The various
class championships are by no means settled and the title battles
between the leaders will most probably go down to the wire.
In the motorcycle category, the Botswana rider, Ross Branch
(Brother Leader Tread KTM) moved to the top of the OR1 (Open)
ranking after a clean sweep in his home country. A victory still
eludes the defending OR1 champion, Kenny Gilbert (Kargo
Racing Husqvarna), but two more runner-up results in Botswana
resulted in him now filling the second spot, six points behind
Branch while consistent results – another fourth and a third
place at the third and fourth rounds respectively – see Altus
de Wet (BCR Arrow Yamaha Racing) moving onto the podium,
12 points behind Gilbert. Michael Pentecost (Proudly Bidvest
Yamaha) dropped the most positions when a crash prevented
him from completing the fourth round. He lost the championship
lead and is now fourth, four points behind De Wet.
The situation in OR2 (250cc) has also changed with the
defending champion, Louw Schmidt (Brother Leader Tread
KTM) completing a hat trick of victories in Botswana and taking
the class lead. Cameron Becker (KTM Centurion Liqui Moly
Racing), who led before the TDR 1000, is now 15 points behind
Louw. Jaycee Nienaber (Super Moose KTM) had problems on
the last day in Botswana and he had to settle for eighth place.
He did, however, move from fifth in the class to third and is 10
points behind Becker, but only two points ahead of Brendon
Fourie (Sherco SA Racing) who has been scoring consistently
after moving up from the High School Class.
The current OR3 (200cc) champion, Brett Swanepoel (Proudly
Bidvest Yamaha), could not finish either rounds in Botswana
and, like his team-mate, Pentecost, he also dropped off the
podium and is now seventh in class, 24 points behind the new
leader, Dartagnan Lobjoit (Yamaha) who won both rounds in
front of his home crowd. A single point separates him from
Wilhelm Schönfeldt (BCR Arrow Yamaha Racing) who moved
to the second place (he was fifth) after scoring a fourth (round
three) and second (round four) in Botswana. Consistency,
including a third place at the TDR 1000, saw Eduan Bester
(KTM Centurion Liqui Moly Racing) getting on to the podium,
five points behind Schönfeldt. After finishing second at the third
UM 03, Clearwatermall, Hendrik Potgieter & Christiaan de Wet, Little Falls, JHB

3rd Senior Bikes Lodewyk Jansen van Vuuren
4th OR1 Michael Pentecost
round, Taki Bogiages (KTM) could
not complete the fourth round. He is
now fourth in OR3, 12 points behind
Bester and only one point ahead of
Dean Lindsay (Sherco SA Racing)
who finished fifth in each round in
Botswana.
The battle between the defending
Senior Class champion, Juan ‘Bollie’
van Rooyen (Brother Leader Tread)
and the class leader, Wynand
Kleynhans (Yamaha) is continuing
with Kleynhans still leading the
standings after four runner-up
results this season. Van Rooyen had
to fight back after a problematic
start to the season, but after three
consecutive victories including
two in Botswana, he now trails
Kleynhans by a mere two points.
Lodewyk Jansen van Vuuren (KTM
Centurion Liqui Moly Racing) is third
after two more fourth place finishes.
He is 14 points behind Van Rooyen
and is only eight points ahead of
Bruce May (Agri Sales Peak Yamaha
Racing) who could not finish the
Dundee event, but was third after
both races in Botswana.
The High School championship
fight became even tighter with
only two points now separating
the leader, Adriano Catalano (D&H
Engineering Works Yamaha) who
has kept his lead over Stefan van
Deventer (Alfie Cox KTM Junior
Racing). Catalano won the first two
rounds, but had to settle as the
runner-up to Van Deventer at both
TDR 1000 events. André Basson
(Yamaha) is now third after a fourth
(round three) and third place and
trails Van Deventer by 12 points.
The rest are somewhat further
behind with fourth-placed Troy
Sullivan (KTM), who moved up four
places, also completing all four
events so far and now trails Basson
by 23 points.
Consistency and experience pay
and the leader of the Master Class,
Wayne Farmer (Doorzone Bikers
Warehouse Husqvarna) can vouch
for that as four out of four finishes
and two victories keep him at the
top of the leader board. He might
get worried though as Pieter Holl
(KTM) did not finished round two,
second spot albeit 22 points adrift. There are fairly
big gaps between the riders with third-placed Justin
Broughton (Sherco SA Racing) third after a podium at
the TDR 1000 round three, but a DNF at round four
putting him 14 points behind Holl and eight points
ahead of Harry Grobler (Yamaha) who finished fourth
(round three) and third (round four) in Botswana.
The standings in the 125cc Challenge has also
changed with veteran rider, Izak Mans (Droomers
Yamaha) dropping from the lead to third place after
not finishing the third round (he was fourth at round
four), but only eight points separate the top three
riders. The scholar Ryan Pelser (KTM) has moved into
the lead after two runner-up results in Botswana and
now leads Janco Pienaar (KTM) by seven points with
Mans one point further behind. Stefan van Deventer’s
dad, Faan, competed for the first time this year in this
class and won it on both occasions in Botswana. He
is now fourth with youngster Michael Glöckle (D&H
Engineering Works Yamaha), who was on the podium
earlier, dropping to fifth place after not scoring any
points in Botswana.
There is a new leader in the Ladies Class with
young Karen Jansen van Vuren (KTM) taking the lead
after claiming a second and third place in the desert.
Riki Mans (Droomers Yamaha) could not finish round
three, but was second in round four and she dropped
to second place, 16 points behind the youngster.
The desert suited another young lady, Yanke Pieterse
(KTM), well and although she competed for the first
time this year in the Ladies Class, she finds herself in
third place after winning both rounds in Botswana.
with Prinsloo having a comfortable lead
of 33 points ahead of Bester who only
scored once in the desert. There was also
a change in the Manufacturer’s Award
where KTM now leads Yamaha by 50
points with Husqvarna 117 points behind
in third place. Sherco is fourth.
There was a huge turn-around in the
Open Quad Championship with the 2015
Dakar Rally finisher, Hannes Saaijman
(Yamaha) jumping into the lead after two
runner-up results. He did not compete in
the season opener. Saaijman does not
have any breathing space though as he
is only three points ahead of the earlier
leader, André Park (Yamaha) who posted
two solid fourth place results at the TDR
1000. Johan Oosthuizen (VANS Racing
Division Yamaha) also scored a podium
in Botswana and together with a fifth
place, he has moved to third spot and
is nine points behind Park. There were
problems for defending champion, Brian
Baragwanath (Proudly Bidvest Yamaha)
who dropped to fourth place despite
winning the third round in Botswana. He
fell the next day and injured his elbow
and could not finish the race. Dewald
Theron did not compete in Botswana
and is still fifth, but Hannes’ brother, Attie
Saaijman (Yamaha) now has the same
amount of points as Theron after a third
(round three) and fifth (round four) at the
TDR 1000. He did not participate in the
first two rounds.
In the Master Class, the defending
champion, George Twigge (Yamaha) kept
his lead after a victory and a runner-up
result at the TDR 1000. He leads Stef
Bester (VANS Racing Division Yamaha) by
a comfortable 37 points while Botswana
rider, Motsumi Lekone (Yamaha) is now
third after winning round four in front of
his home crowd.
After winning twice in Botswana,
Morné Jansen van Vuren (Yamaha) has
strengthened his lead in the High School
Quad Class to 47 points over Megan
Stander (Suzuki) who was second on the
first day, but could not finish round four.
BIKES - QUADS - SIDE X SIDES - DUAL PURPOSE BIKES
WWW.FAMILYADVENTURES.CO.ZA
The Tri Nations ride is a trip for bikes and quads of all shapes and sizes from Northern Natal,
through Swaziland to the beach on Ponta Do Oura , Mozambique. We are not quite sure, but
we reckon that this was around about number 7 - and every year, the routes seem to get better.
From craggy mountain trails to sweeping farmlands and then endless fast sand, this ride is certainly
one of the highlights of the year.
Its not a super technical enduro - this is trail riding at its best, with friendly people and
interesting things to see all the way.
Fernando’s bar in ponta always does a roaring trade when the bikes arrive.
What a cool adventure. See you in 2017...
The next big event from this lot is Quads 4 Quads - JHB to Durban and back
in the dirt raising funds for the Quadpara association of SA.
See you there!

ADVENTURE
Part One
EAST 2 WEST BIKERS BOYZ
EVENT SUPPORTED BY BIKERS WAREHOUSE
A few issues back, we featured
the custom Adventure 701 by
Bikers Warehouse. The bikes
were about to be shipped off
for the East To West trip – a
charity fund raiser trip through 3
countries from the east coast to
the west coast of Africa. 9000kms
through Kenya, Uganda and the
DRC. Mike has brought back so
many great pics and info that we
are going to have to break the trip
up over a couple of months.
From Mike:
This ride was put together by
Mark Bristow and his team at
Rand gold resources. The trip
was 2 years in the planning. Mark
runs and owns if not the biggest
Gold mine in the world ‘Kibali’ in
the DRC Congo. Mark has done
other similar BOYZ On Bikes trips
in the past years mainly on roads
around Africa from top to bottom.
This was the first trip planned
across the continent off Africa
and was a truly epic off-road
event.
RIDERS:
• Mark Bristow – JHB (Mauritius
resident) (‘Papa Bristow’ – Team
leader and organizer)
• Rob Alexander –
Pietermaritsburg
• Paul Weingartz – Cape Town
(‘Smoky Mountain’)
• Quinton Warn – Vereeniging
(‘Are we there yet’)
• Rolf Brauteseth - Benoni (‘Ill
Knock U Out’)
• Charles Wells – JHB
• Mike Puzey – JHB (‘Super Fly’)
Mark set up in Congo a
Charity foundation for the 2016
ride and raised over 2.8 million
$Us for women and Children
affected by war.
The foundation ‘Nois vies en
Partage’ closely manages the
centres that get support. They
have performance targets to
achieve further donations. Many
stops were made on the ride to
donate to rehabilitation centres
hand selected by Mark.
were funded by the owners to ensure
100% of the charity goes to the women
and kids supported by the foundation.
Many sponsors were involved in the trip
helping with support and large funding
for the trip. Many government clearances
and much support was given for this
event so it’s something very unique - not
a ride that could be repeated easily.
East to West involved 9000km mainly
off road bike riding 3 countries - Kenya,
Uganda and Congo. Indian ocean to
Atlantic ocean across the equator of
Africa. As far as I’m aware, its never been
done before.
The Bikes tyres touched both oceans
Indean and Atlantic. We did 9000km
in 28 days – average days were 12-15
hours of tough riding. (320 km per day
average). The bikes did 180+ hours with
a combined mileage of 62000km on one
set of tyres.
These countries are remote places and
no-one has crossed east to west Africa
since Stanley explored it in 1865. The
Belgians left DRC in 1961 so the place
has totally collapsed in the last 50 years.
It has reverted to the Rural ways as of
250 years ago. More than 70% of the trip
was done on paths and tracks that do not
exist on Garmin.
I know that this is a bike mag but…
TOYOTA LAND CRUISERS –were the
vehicle of choice and Toyota was there
in full support for the total road trip all
done by Kibalies (the mine) Congolese
partners.
The Cruisers were our refueling support
for all 9000km of the way. The trucks
were donated, fully modified for the trip
with all the off road gear and winches
needed to tackle anything Congo. They
were fitted with secure metal canopies
and long range fuel tanks.
SIDE NOTE four land Cruisers were
rolled or crashed on this trip doing
support for the bikers. The Cruisers
took hectic abuse and there were days
we couldn’t believe the cars would get
through. It was tough on the bikes but
the trucks still managed to arrive every
night…truly amazing.
Toyota Rocks! If people could have
seen the places these cars went it was
truly remarkable and 100% technically
reliable even after we managed to drown
one in a river, pulled it out and just an
hour or two later got it going again. An
amazing machine.
BIG Mention if you like for ‘Rand Gold
Rescues management team and TOYOTA
CRUZA’ who did an amazing job with the
logistics and back-up…
Modified Husqvarna 701’s were
the choice of bike for this adventure.
Bikers Warehouse undertook all of the
workmanship on the seven bikes:
Bikers Warehouse sells standard
factory 701 Husqvarna models and
TWO modified versions.
A Rally kit modified version for off road
desert racing and an Adventure East 2
West replica model for proper adventure
bike trips. The Adventure model is not for
racing but rather aimed for normal and
hard core terrain trips, the bike will go
anywhere!
“The New 701’s were well kitted and
prepped prior to departure in something
of a hurry. We only had 5-6 weeks to
build all the accessories for the brand
New 701 model prior to shipping them to
Kenya on time. During the trip, the bikes
stood up to the challenge incredibly, one
of, or possibly the best adventure bike
ever in my opinion. Naturally there were a
few technical problems during the trip but
over-all the bikes were tough and held
together beautifully.”
Daily there were small things to adjust
or straighten and lube chains prior to
departure but overall, the 28 days on the
bikes were great.
Some of the bigger problems were
things like fork seals popping early in the
ride, 2 x clutch plate kits were changed
from thick sand riding. Sasol fuel was
used only during the trip but we did have
some fuel pump problem.
Here’s an idea of some of the
modifications for the trip:
· 1 Tooth bigger front sprocket for more
top speed.
· A throttle cruise aid (Hand support for
long range rides), like cruise control.
· East to west Bikers Warehouse
adventure Graphics Kit.
· Cyra CRM hand Guards from HRP – the
only set that fits the bike well with the
screens.
· High Screens and mount plates set.
· 2 x LED spots fitted to be screen
mounts – connected to HI Beam.
· Rear soft luggage tube carrier frame set.
Rear soft side panniers bag set and a 50L
Oxford top bag each.
· Sump Guard bash plate.
· Karoo 3 tyres fitted. Dunlop was out of
stock.
· Thick tubes and slime OKO added.
· 2 x Bikers Warehouse Quick release
long range adventure tanks added – with
fuel pump fittings, pipes and taps.
· GPS Garmin Oregon 600.(The Garmin’s
were not much use as they didn’t have
maps or DATA for the regions we travelled
as we found out. Google maps and Cell
GPS NAVMII saved us every day), Garmin
short arm Mounting kit for the 600 +
U-bolt clamp to handlebar.
· Waterproof CELL Phone mount carrier
for apple or other cells.
• Double USB handlebar mount socket
– (This is essential.) Seat front L and R
bags. Maxima Chain spray (brown Gold
tin – best chain spray on the market).
• Q20 small. (for general use). Large and
medium Cable ties in the side bags.
Bungee cord set in side bag for strapping
luggage. An 701 ABS module for offroad
riding was added to each bike.
The Start…
The crew unpacked the bikes on arrival
in Kenya, no damage found from
shipping SA to Kenya. The bikes were
then delivered to the Serena Beach hotel
for the start of the epic trip. On arrival,
briefings were held, bike parts and rider
kit were unpacked. Support cruisers were
loaded with tyres, bike parts and filled
with Fuel. The first day was used to set
up the bikes, pack the kit and test ride
the bikes on a short trip from the hotel
to the first orphanage in the area. The
crew got to bed late after a celebration
function and then trying to pair the
intercoms and attending a foundation
dinner event at the hotel.
1st of June:
We arrived to a hive of activity at dawn
as we prepared to leave from the
hotel during a press event and large
celebration. The riders mounted the bikes
at 6am, in single file left the crowd behind
and hit the road with great anticipation.
The roads out of Mombasa were
unbelievable busy and not in great
condition, we had never seen so many
trucks in long convoys completely
blocking the roads for the over 20-30km’s
after leaving the city. The roads were not
great and the traffic was very hazardous.
Uneven tar and numerous potholes for
hundreds of kilometres persisted as we
left the bigger city heading north towards
Nairobi and then Uganda.
After many hours in the saddle the
riders settled down and got used to riding
in the group but the adrenalin would take
its toll later in the day when Mark Bristow
was the first to earn a pink tape with a
potentially dangerous bad fall. He was
too hot into a tar bend and could not stop
for the T junction, sliding right through
the main road, landing up on the grass on
the other side of the bend. Not hurt, only
shaken he gathered himself saddled the
slightly damaged bike and to our surprise
with the tar roasties got going again. This
was our first lesson on just how tough
Mark really is, it gave everyone huge
respect for the potential danger and the
riding was significantly calmer after the
1st fall….
The 9000km journey continues next
month…
ADVENTURE
74 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

HONDA AFRICA TWIN TAKE TWO
ANOTHER
POINT OF VIEW
A second opinion and test by the intrepid Kurt Beine
After reading all the hype around the new Honda Africa Twin CRF 1000L
I really itched to get my hands on one to see what all the fuss was
about, they were in high demand all over the country, so I had to wait
patiently, finally they became available, Glenn arranged with Honda/
ADA and I was off to Hartebeespoort Dam to the ADA Academy to
fetch the manual version, I was to ride the DCT version next.
After collecting the bike I headed back home, at first I really wondered what
the hype was all about, the Honda is very comfortable, the standard screen
works well, even though I am tall, the dash is very informative, tells you pretty
much anything you need to know besides the phase of the moon, the handlebar
controls take a bit of getting used to, there are lots of buttons on both sides, the
handlebars are nice and wide, it handles well on tar, the brakes are good, but then
so are a lot of other adventure bikes as well, nothing really hit me and said WOW..
I took it out to Wonderboom airport, highway all the way, it was cold and I really
missed heated grips, which I understand are available as an option,
the Africa Twin cruised at speeds ‘slightly’ over the speed limit
with ease, fuel consumption was
around 5.5L/100 km, not the most
frugal, but then I was not riding in a
very fuel economical way. I headed
home after the airshow riding after
sunset, headlights were outstanding, the best
I have seen for a long time, finally,
something I really liked. The next day
I headed out to test the Honda’s dirt
road abilities, after all, it has the proper
wheel sizes for serious dirt riding, 18” rear and
21” front, then the WOW factor hit me, the Africa
Twin is BRILLIANT on dirt! I have a route that I
ride all adventure bikes I get to test on, mostly I
just go once or twice, on the Africa Twin I did this
route FOUR times, in the freezing cold, although
I had more road biased tyres fitted the Honda
felt very comfortable and sure footed all the way,
some adventure bikes compel you to stand on
dirt, not the Africa Twin, I felt equally comfortable
sitting (as I am used to on my personal bike, I only
stand when I have to, not just when it looks cool)
and standing, the front of the saddle is quite narrow,
allowing your knees to be comfortable, and not bow
legged John Wayne style. The ABS was set for dirt,
the rear wheel can lock on demand but not the front
wheel, one never needs a front wheel to lock on
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016 75

dirt, very clever of Honda, although
a few other brand’s adventure
bikes have this facility as well,
very nice to have. Traction control
was switched off on dirt as well,
just the way I like it, although the
Africa Twin does have traction
control switchability for various
stages of interference/safety, I
prefer it to be off. Suspension
is also very good on dirt, it
was set to factory standard
which seemed ok, in time if it
was my bike I would set the
suspension a bit stiffer, which is
quite possible with the multiadjustable
suspension front
and back.
After this I took the Africa
Twin out to Roto Rookies, Lisa
Fawkes had INSISTED that I
bring the bike out there, she
just HAD to ride it, how could
I refuse? Lisa has a mid ‘80s 650 Honda Africa Twin,
and this bike will be buried with her, she will NEVER get
rid of it, so, off Lisa went on the Honda, the tank was
full, I asked Paul if we would ever see Lisa again, he just
smiled. After what seemed an eternity Lisa returned, with
a smile a mile wide, she was totally blown away with the
new Africa Twin, she battled to put her emotions into
words so high was the excitement, next thing I saw Paul
strolling up the bike, riding jacket and helmet already
on, at that stage Paul was still undergoing some very
intense medical treatment, even Lisa was surprised to
see Paul ready to test the new Honda, well, Paul came
back with the same evil grin, he was also amazed at the
new Honda, it was good to see Paul back in the saddle.
Lisa’s only requirement was a different paint
scheme, the test bike’s silver/grey was a
bit bland, Honda red, white and blue is the
perfect colour for this bike....her old 650
Africa Twin was in these colours... So, off I
went, Lisa and Paul still grinning ear to ear....
Over the next few days I commuted
mostly, while the Honda does not have huge
horsepower, it has more than enough for
what the bike is designed for, other adventure
bike brands that have huge horsepower get
restricted to lower more sensible horsepower in
‘dirt’ mode anyway, and dirt is where the Africa
Twin is the happiest.
I then got my paws on the DCT version, which
now has improved dirt ability which I found a
bit lacking in the NC 750 and 1200 Cross Tourer
with DCT,(Dual Clutch Transmission) but then
again, neither of those models was designed
for serious dirt riding, which the Africa Twin is.
I also had more dirt biased tyres now. This time
I had the ideal colours, red white and blue, the
only colours I would have if I was to buy one.
On tar the DCT feels the same as the manual
model, handling, braking, comfort, suspension,
all the same, although the DCT is a tad heavier
I did not feel the difference. Honda have got the
76 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE AUGUST 2016

centre of gravity very low on both
models, it does not feel like a 200+
kg motorcycle. On tar I quite enjoyed
the DCT gearbox, commuting was a
pleasure, it was always somehow in the
right gear...Then it was off to the dirt
again, same route as I had ridden the
manual model, on the long stretches it
was great, if I wanted a different gear I
just clicked away on the left handlebar
control, although the Honda rarely
selected a gear I was not happy with. I
then took it to a track nearby with lots
of steep uphills and downhills where
the weekend warriors play with quads
and MX bikes over weekends, and here
I did not really agree with the DCT, I
found I had to put implicit trust in the
one old, one new and Lisa Fawkes from Roto
Rookies gives the bike thumbs up...
bike’s electronics to do the right thing,
and perhaps because I am so used to
doing my thing with a manual gearbox
and clutch, I battled to trust the bike,
in time I would probably get used to
it. I also had a bit of a trust issue with
doing a tight U-turn on dirt when I use
clutch control for various degrees of
dirt surfaces, with the DCT the clutch is
either there or not, no in-between, again
probably a trust issue.
I also found the DCT to be slightly
heavier on fuel than the manual model,
getting averages around 6.2L/100km.
Personally I preferred the manual
version, but then I am pretty old school
and I am used to telling the bike’s
gearbox what to do, I’m not used to
trusting a bike’s electronics to do the
right thing when it comes to gears, I
also prefer a less complex bike, in my
opinion a better option when going to
remote destinations where being totally
self sufficient is essential. Again, a trust
issue, bike’s electronics these days are
so good, and extremely reliable, at least
now there is an option for all, the Honda
Africa Twin is available in the manual
with no complex gadgets, or with all the
gadgets you could ask for, then the DCT
with all the gadgets, this coupled with
Honda’s legendary build quality and
finish, take your choice, then the paint
scheme, fit luggage and off you go, the
world is your oyster....
