often as he talked and thus planting that
word in my head.
“Together 2016” had a goal of bringing
one million people together on the National
Mall to change history, sharing through
speakers and musicians the message that Jesus
offers a “reset.” I listened in to parts of it
via live stream on the Internet last Saturday
and quickly understood why our daughter
was so excited.
While there weren’t a million people
there that day, speakers like Francis Chan,
Ravi Zacharias and Nick Hall told the
350,000 kids in attendance that they
couldn’t just sit back and wait for someone
else to do something, they had to be bold in
their faith and their convictions. They had
to help this country reset its barometer to
Jesus in order to make the kinds of changes
we need.
With the unusual 2016 presidential race,
terrorist attacks around the world and
violence against police officers right here in
our own country, I couldn’t agree more.

On an early Saturday morning with the sun
peeking over the trees on East Lake Okoboji,
I often look out from my deck and
see kayaks gently coasting across the water past
my home.
I have never kayaked, but I’ve always imagined
it being a relaxing experience. On a typical
morning in Okoboji, before the hustle and
bustle of boats, the waves are calm and the shore
is peaceful. In those moments I feel that kayaking
would be the perfect activity to spend time
on the lake.
This past week I met Jeremy Snow, a water
sports expert from Okoboji Boat Works on West
Okoboji Lake. With his help I was finally going
to learn how to kayak, something I’ve wanted to
try my whole life. With the morning weather at
a perfect 70 degrees and no trace of clouds, the
water looked more beautiful than ever.
A kayak is a low-to-the-water boat that requires
balance, sitting face forward and your legs
in front parallel to one another. Jeremy showed
me that by using a double-bladed paddle I
would pull front-to-back through the water
rotating each side of my body to keep my path
even. If I wanted to turn, I would continue my
rotating motion but would only place my paddle
in the water on the side I wanted to travel to.
As we began our journey from West Lake to
East Lake, I noticed that the direction of the
wind played a huge factor in the difficulty of our
trip.
If I paddled against the wind, I had to work
extra hard to move forward. With each passing
wave Jeremy taught me to paddle between the
peaks rather than through them. If the wind was
against my back I had the opportunity to relax
and coast in the direction that the waves would
take me.
Although I was nervous about the traffic
of boats passing by, I quickly learned how to
continue on my path safely while staying an
appropriate distance away. Because of the beautiful
weather, it seemed that everyone was in a
chipper mood that morning. Passing through
various bridges and marinas I shared a “good
morning” with several happy Okoboji residents
and visitors.
What I enjoyed most about kayaking was not
only the relaxing experience of coasting across
the water, but the feeling of light exercise as my
shoulders continued to rotate and work through
the waves. By the end of the morning I was
already a little sore but I wasn’t complaining.
Sometimes the simplest activities on the lake
can make you feel like you gave your body the
brisk workout it deserves while still having a
great time.
Unlike most water sports, kayaking is an activity
that has no age limit. It’s leisurely entertaining
and needs minimal effort in order to have
fun. As I continue on to my next “Sights of Summer,”
I hope to kayak again in the near future. F

Creek Fest Music Festival 2016 will
be a party in the pasture.
Each summer Cherokee, IA,
hosts one of the biggest music festival
in N’West Iowa. The two-day event
features some of the best country
artists in the music industry. Before
the festival even kicks off, Walker Mc-
Guire will perform Thursday, July 28.
The festival officially begins Friday,
July 29, with Farewell Angelina
performing at 4:30 p.m. The lineup
continues with Joe Diffie and Granger
Smith featuring Earl Dibbles Jr.
Chase Rice will close out the evening
with his performance at 10 p.m.
On Saturday, July 30, Tim Montana
and The Shrednecks start the
afternoon at 4:30 p.m. followed by
Elle King and Chris Janson. The most

highly anticipated act of the weekend,
Kid Rock, will be on stage at 10 p.m.
General admission tickets are $85
and will cover all concerts and events
both Friday and Saturday of the festival.
Although there isn’t seating, fans
are welcome to bring their own lawn
chairs. Standing room is at a firstcome,
first-served basis for all performances.
Camping is available and is conveniently
located next to all of the
weekend’s festivities.
Renting a weekend space for a tent
is a $75 fee and $125 for an RV. If
you purchase a Creekside VIP pass, all
campers are welcome to rent a space
as early as Monday, July 25.
Jimmie Harms, director and organizer
of Creek Fest, said that he has
made several exciting additions to this
year’s festival. Beginning Friday at 10
a.m., guests are able to go on a helicopter
ride for $30 per person. The helicopter
rides will be offered until Saturday
evening. The annual zip line is
now located next to the campground
for easier access. A country store, with
personal hygiene essentials, snacks
and Creek Fest merchandise, has also
been added to the campground.
To Harms, this year’s Creek Fest is
the biggest summer event in N’West
Iowa and no one will want to miss it.
“The campground sets everything
else apart with it’s laidback, fun atmosphere,”
said Harms. “The energy of
the audience at each concert is really
unlike any place else and you’re going
to want to be there.” F

Okoboji Bible Conference opens Saturday, July 30
Continuing a longstanding tradition
the Okoboji Bible Conference
is back for its 82nd year.
They’ll once again be featuring intriguing
speakers, uplifting music and
much more from July 30-Aug. 7.
They are kicking off the nine-day
conference at 7:15 p.m., Saturday, July
30, with a free concert by the popular
group, Selah.
Selah is a contemporary Christian
vocal trio. It is made up of Todd
Smith, Allan Hall and Amy Perry.
Selah has won seven Gospel Music Association
Dove Awards and sold more
than 4 million albums and single
units combined.
This will be their third time performing
at the Okoboji Bible Conference.
“They are a conference favorite because
their music spans generations,”
said Jody Van Kley, the conference
coordinator for Okoboji Bible Conference.
“They also are known for
taking a church hymn and reworking
it into something very contemporary
and something people really enjoy
listening to.”
The concert is free and the doors
open at 5:45 p.m. About 1,500 can
fit in the tabernacle and the outside
tented area and it’s first-come, firstserve
when it comes to seating for the
concert.
Just like the rest of the nine-day
conference, the Selah concert is completely
free.
“We just believe that the Lord has
kept this event going for 82 years
and it’s supported by the people who
come and God has blessed us through

Van Kley said. “We want it to be
available for anyone and everyone to
come.”
The first weekend will also include
some very interesting speakers. Skye
Jethani and Joshua Becker will both
give speeches on Sunday, July 31.
Jethani is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and
Becker will follow later that evening at
7:15 p.m.
Those speeches as well as many of
the rest throughout the nine-day conference
will focus around this year’s
conference theme: Redeeming Work.
“It has a double meaning. The first
meaning is to remind us that we are
redeemed by Jesus so we celebrate
that fact,” Van Kley said. “The second
half of the meaning is that fact that
the work we do every day is work we
are called to do by God so that makes
it redeemed.”
This concept is discussed in Colossians
3, verse 23, and according to
Van Kley, it will be a common thread
throughout the conference this year. F

perform in Hull, Hawarden

Everyone knows the rule is that
you are supposed to be quiet in
libraries. But the Hull and Hawarden
Public Libraries are suspending
that rule for a night.
They are going to be hosting free concerts
for all who would like to attend.
The folk duo Hungrytown will be
performing at both venues. They will
first be performing in Hull on Monday,
Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. and Hawarden on
Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m.
Matt Hoehamer, the director of the
Hull Public Library, noted that this
isn’t the first time that they’ve suspended
the quiet in the library rule.
“Hungrytown is a folk music duo
and we’ve done a couple of music
programs in the past year. We’ve had
some really good turnouts for those,”
Hoehamer said. “Since we had such a
good response to those types of programs,
we were looking to host some
more music performances.”
He received an email from the band
announcing that they would be in the
area.
“I listened to some samples of their
songs and I, myself, enjoy folk music
and based on the response from the
people who have come to the performances,
I thought that Hungrytown
would be a band that people would
enjoy,” Hoehamer said.
Hungrytown is composed of Rebecca
Hall and Ken Anderson. They
were introduced to folk music when
a friend died and left Hall her collection
of folk albums and a guitar. Hall
went on to write lyrics and songs for
two solo albums, “Sings!” and “Sunday
Afternoon.” Both of those initial
albums were produced by Anderson.
In 2003, the two decided to quit
their jobs and move to Vermont to
pursue music as a full-time job.
They’ve been touring ever since. They
have released three albums together
including; “Hungrytown,” “Any Forgotten
Thing,” and “Further West.”
They tour more than half of the
year and have spent time in North
America, Europe and New Zealand.

The biggest ’80s and ’90s throwback
concert in N’West Iowa is
coming to Boji Bay Legacy Park’s
brand new Harley-Davidson Music
Stage for a night of spectacular rock
‘n’ roll performances on Saturday,
July 23.
The event will feature Warrant,
Firehouse and Hericane Alice.
Warrant, an American glam metal
band, sold over 10 million albums
internationally from 1989 to 1996.
The band first became famous with
their Double Platinum album “Dirty
Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich” that featured
the hit single, “Heaven.” Reaching
No. 1 in Rolling Stone magazine,
the band continued their success
with another Double Platinum album,
“Cherry Pie.” The hit album,
title song and music video launched
Warrant into their peak ultimate stardom
selling over 7 million albums.
Named after Warrant’s hit single,
“Cherry Pie,” the concert is called the
Cherry Pie Arena Rock Show. Before
the performances kick off, Boji Bay
will give away 250 free mini cherry
pies to the audience.
Fire House sold over 6.5 million
records in 1990 with their hit
single “Love of a Lifetime.” The band,
which is on their 25th Anniversary
summer tour, will follow Hericane
Alice in the lineup.
Hericane Alice paved their way
into the music industry with their hit
song, “Wild Young and Crazy.” The
band will open the show at 6 p.m.
Tom Tourville, director of marketing
at Boji Bay, helps schedule the
venue’s summer concert lineup. He
said that the show will be an epic
throwback performance that fans
won’t be able to hear anywhere else.
“There are more hits from these
bands than any other concert you’ll
hear this summer,” said Tourville.
“You’re going to have the opportunity
to see some of the best original
hits but you’ll also get to see them by
the guys who originally did it.”
By visiting Boji Bay’s website, those
that buy tickets for the event are eligible
to register for a chance to meet
the bands. Seventy-five passes will
be given away, 25 for each band performing.
For ticket sales you can preorder
online through Boji Bay or you can
purchase them at the gate before the
show. Tickets are general admission
for $22 and children are welcome to

Fly through the sky
Sky Ryder Zip Line offers thrills and stunning views
A
new attraction has joined the
amenities in Arnolds Park this
summer. The Sky Ryder Zip Line
soars above the condos and cabins
hundreds of feet in the air at Bridges
Bay Resort.
Along with The WaterFront, which
includes a wedding and event center,
Waters Edge American Grille and Blue
Water Flatbread Pizza Co., the Sky Ryder
Zip Line is another new addition
to the resort roster this season.
“We have a brand new facility with
The WaterFront and just a lot going
on,” event coordinator Megan Johnson
said.
“The zip line is another fun attraction
for everyone who comes to visit
and for families to enjoy.”
The zip line fits two riders side-byside
pulling them backwards until
they reach the top before sending
them sailing through the air back
down to Earth.
Johnson was one of the first test riders
for the zip line the night before it
opened in late June.
“You’re going backwards wall and
thinking ‘Oh geez, when’s it going to
stop and shoot back down,’” Johnson
said.
At its apex riders will get a stunning
view up to 4.5 miles across East and
West Lake Okoboji and the surrounding
area.
“Once you’re up there that view is
just gorgeous, there’s nothing like it,”
Johnson said. “Then you go flying

Bill Lieb has new exhibit at Dickinson County Nature Center
Metal work and nature.
Not two things that you
think would go together symbiotically,
but Spirit Lake artist Bill
Lieb has shown it can be done at his
new exhibit at the Dickinson County
Nature Center entitled, “Connecting
with Nature Through Sculpture.”
The new exhibit can be found in the
eARTh exhibit area at the nature center
and it explores the relationships
between “certain site-specific pieces
he has created and the environments
they reside in,” according to a statement
from the nature center.
“All of these, except one, are kinetic;
the wind activates them,” Lieb said. “I
love that part. I think it draws your attention
to it because it moves. When it
moves, you start to think about wind
and breezes and the nature of it.”
Kiley Roth, the community relations
coordinator for the nature center,
agrees that Lieb’s metal sculptures
walk hand-in-hand with nature.
“Lieb’s artwork fits in well with the
nature theme, specifically the sculptures
shown in this exhibit. Lieb chose
site-specific sculptures to display, and
all of them were designed around the
area that they were to live in. Most of
the sculptures are kinetic and move in
the wind, and that activation by nature
itself makes them even more connected
to the world around them,”
Roth said.
The exhibit details Lieb’s entire process
when he sets out to create a new
piece.
This former architect’s first step is
to do a walkthrough of the site and
analyze the site for potential problems
and pitfalls. Then he creates a
freehand sketch of the ideas he’s come
up with for the sculpture.
Then it gets a little bit more technical.
Those sketches are turned into
computer drawings. The plans are
then tested on cardboard models.
Once the test of the cardboard
models is complete and the computer
renderings tweaked and perfected, the
drawings are sent off to a steel fabricator.
The various sections that make
up the entire piece are cut with a laser
and then they are welded together
either by Lieb’s own two hands or
sometimes with the help of another
welder.
Some of Lieb’s models are on display
along with photos of the finished
products at the eARTh exhibit, but
there is another piece that you’ll have
to take a look at.
Lieb completed one of his newest
sculptures right at the nature center.
Bird Series No. 3 is one in his series of
five kinetic bird sculptures.
“We were excited to have Bill Lieb
display at the nature center to expand
our eARTh exhibit offerings. Since
the exhibit area’s inception we have
had mainly two-dimensional artwork,
and Lieb’s exhibit that includes
models of his sculptures as well as a
temporary outdoor sculpture, let us
expand into the three-dimensional
world,” Roth said. “The models and
bright colors in the display really
draw people in when they walk into
the nature center.”
For those interested in learning a bit
more about Lieb and his art during a
class he’s hosting from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.,
Wednesday, July 27, at the nature center.
The class will walk to see eight of Lieb’s
sculptures and he will talk about
his work and how nature actually influenced
each of the pieces. Students
will be provided with wood materials
and will be able to create their own
sculpture models.
“I hope they see a connection between
nature and sculpture and how
nature can inform a design,” Lieb
said. “If you look at nature enough
it starts suggesting solutions to problems.”
The class will cost $15 per person
and has a maximum of 10 students.

Retelling a familiar story
“The Diary of Anne Frank” on stage now at OST
I
don’t know a single person who
made it through middle and high
school without being assigned “The
Diary of Anne Frank,” as required
reading material.
I know I had to write a lengthy book
report on the story.
For the most part, it’s a story that
everyone is familiar with, but it’s not
often that you are presented with a
familiar story in a new way.
That’s just what is happening onstage
now at Okoboji Summer Theatre
with their production of Wendy
Kesselman’s “The Diary of Anne
Frank.” It will be onstage from July
19-24. Her adaptation of the original
stage play by Goodrich and Hackett
incorporates newly discovered writing
from the diary of Anne Frank as well
as some accounts from survivors.
It’s much more brutal than what I
remember of the original production,
but that starkness is contrasted with
moments of happiness and joy.
That joy is brought to the stage by
Anne Frank, our central character and
narrator of our story. She is played
by Clara Bentz, who faithfully portrays
Anne’s dual driving emotions
of wanting to remain true to herself,
while struggling to overcome the fear
of the unknown. Bentz convincingly
presents a young 13-year-old girl who
is average in many ways. She’s overdramatic,
walking the wire between
adulthood and childhood, and, of
course, she doesn’t get along with her
mother.
The rest of the group that is
smashed together in the secret annex,
which kept the assembled Jews alive
for two years before they were discovered,
is compiled of three families.
Anne’s family is headed by father
Otto, played by Ivan Zizek, mother
Edith, played by Abilene Olson, and
sister Margot, played by Haley Huskey.
The assemblage is rounded out by
the three Van Daans and Mr. Dussel.
The live play is interspersed with
Anne reading from her diary and from
recordings played through the radio.
All of the actors did a fine job, but
I am compelled to add one caveat.
They all had thick German accents,
which at times got a bit muddled,
thus it made it hard to understand the
dialogue at times. Hopefully, this is a
kink that they will work out with a bit
more time on the stage.
Those moments were few though,
and definitely should not discourage
people from going to see this show.
As you certainly already know, the
ending of this show is not a happy
one, but it was certainly illuminating.
It is amazing that the story of a
13-year-old girl has persisted through
more than six decades, but it certainly
is an amazing story worthy of the retelling.

DON’T MISS IT! A pioneer kind of party
A fantastic parade. Plenty of inflatables. Pinochle, bingo, barbecue and much more. The annual
Pioneer Days celebration is set for another fun summer weekend July 22-24 in Milford.
The Second City
Laughter is the best medicine, or so the saying goes. If you want a good dose of that particular
brand of medicine then you’ll want to head to the Pearson Lakes Art Center on Saturday,
July 23. The Second City, a comedy improv troupe based out of Chicago, will be back in
Okoboji for the 12th consecutive year.
Truck on
One semi after another is going to be hitting the road in Sioux Center on Saturday, July 23,
all in an effort to raise money for a good cause. Commercial Chaos for the Cure is now in its
third year and it will feature a day filled with a poker run for big rigs as well as a fun-filled evening
featuring a free-will dinner, games, a bouncy house for the kids and some raffles.
Putting things in perspective
Two new exhibits. Two artists with local ties. Lauren Chapman attended high school in Spirit
Lake and is currently a student at the University of South Carolina. Danielle Clouse Gast is
originally from Ruthven and works out of her home studio in Spirit Lake. Both have exhibits
running from June 30-August 13 at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
A little drama
There’s plenty of options to see actors tread upon the boards this weekend. Check out “The
Diary of Anne Frank” at Okoboji Summer Theatre or check on one of the shows onstage at
Treasure Village Family Theatre.
