Once the plants and
positioning became clear, then
came the inspiration and design.
Roger’s favourite area, owing to
his time travelling abroad, is his
Italian garden. His time in Italy
cemented his love for their
gardens and countryside, and he
was keen to bring a sense of that
home to Derbyshire.
“I love statuary,” he says, “and
have some marble busts, a statue
of the Roman goddess, Hebe and
some dramatic stone columns
and pillars – they look great.”
A terracotta wall is matched by
a 12m (40ft) terracotta pinkstemmed
birch – Betula
albosinensis septentrionalis
– while a pencil conifer, juniper
‘Skyrocket’, looms behind
