Tia & Juan 

We wish we could tell you the full story of 

our handsome new rescue but sadly, it has 

not been clear. We were told he is a tundra 

wolf taken as a pup from a den in Alaska. We 

think he is more likely a wolf-dog and might 

be about four years old. We are planning to 

have his DNA checked as soon as we select a 

reputable lab. He lived with a female companion 

who was also reported to be a wolf taken 

from the wild. Sadly, she passed before she 

was due to make the journey with Zeus. Being 

uprooted along with the loss of his companion 

was undoubtedly very hard on him. 

Zeus arrived with several cuts and scrapes on 

his face and for a few days after he arrived, 

he was withdrawn and quiet. He is a gentle 

and respectful boy and has been on several 

enrichment walks. It is always our goal to

find our rescues a compatible habitat-mate 

and we all hope that we will be able to offer a 

wild-spirited girl out there a beautiful sanctuary 

and a very handsome and deserving boyfriend.

Tia and Juan were held for over 6 years by 

a breeder in Tijuana, Mexico where there 

was nothing natural, not even a tree. As 

they were getting older and no longer able 

to breed, they were going to be destroyed. 

A rescue team quickly came together to get 

them out of there. They were fostered two 

months in a private house where they got 

their first taste of real meat. New Guinea 

Singing Dogs are currently the rarest wild 

canine. There is evidence of them being 

present on the island of Papua for over 

3000 years, but tragically, no one has seen 

any for about 20 years. There are reputable 

conservation organizations, like The 

New Guinea Singing Dog Conservation Society, 

but now breeders have begun selling 

the small dogs for pets. Many caring folks 

from different groups between OR, CA and 

NM all worked together to get this precious 

pair to Wild Spirit. Please help us give this 

ultra sweet retired couple the Golden Years 

they deserve. We howl our thanks to Fran, 

Kathleen, Laura, Joan, and the New Guinea 

Singing Dog Conservation Society and 

everyone else who didn’t look away and 

worked hard to save Tia and Juan. Lift your 

voice with ours that Wild Animals Are Not 

Pets! No living being wants to be caged and 

have their babies stolen and sold. If we all 

work together and never give up, we can

BIG PACK in the SKY 

Sassy We are all deeply saddened to lose 

our beautiful darling Sassy who lost her battle 

with cancer. She was beloved by everyone who 

helped care for her during her nine years. She 

bravely survived a serious attack by her habitat-mates 

in her younger days which included 

a punctured lung. She went on to find a happy 

union in her last years with our shiest rescue, 

handsome Lakota, and several wonderful caretakers 

to shower her with love. In her last days, 

Sassy was blessed to be surrounded by people 

she had known her whole life, including Leyton, 

Crystal, Angel, Allison and Jan, plus our whole 

team of caring staff and volunteers. Sassy was 

comfortable and slipped away peacefully in her 

habitat only a few days after her last vet visit 

with the wonderful staff of Canyon Crossroads 

Animal Hospital. We thank you all for helping us 

provide our much-beloved girl a beautiful place 

to live in peace with her sweet boyfriend, and 

the best diet and care from staff and volunteers.

Axel We can’t imagine enrichment treat 

days without our super handsome Axel who 

loved treats more than anyone. At 11 yearsold, 

he was suddenly not doing well. The 

Animal Neurology & Imaging Center (ANIC) 

started him on antibiotics and gave him a full 

work up including an MRI that they donated! 

The team at ANIC determined that Axel had 

abdominal cancer that spread throughout his 

body and most likely caused several strokes. 

We brought Axel back home fully expecting 

him to slip away after he and his companion, 

Riot, had the chance to say goodbye. After 

several days, we thought it best to keep him 

comfortable under vet care. Our gorgeous 

boy slipped away on his own under the superb 

care of the compassionate staff at ANIC. 

Special thanks to our staff member, Rae, who 

lovingly cared for Riot and Axel for four years, 

including keeping him comfortable in his final 

days and to Shirl Casner & David Craig who 

paid for his spinal tap and tests. Thank you all 

for generously letting Axel into your hearts.

Sabine What a sharp blow to lose our gorgeous 

sweetheart with the true Cinderella story. 

Sabine started out life as an underweight runt, but 

her love for life and the tireless care of our former 

Assistant Director, Angel Borden, helped her to 

blossom into her beautiful self. After being kicked 

out of the pack she grew up with, Sabine found the 

love of her life in fellow rescue, Zoerro. The last 18 

months of her life were spent under the loving care 

of Rory Zoerb, with daily enrichment walks with Zoerro 

and a new best girlfriend, Susan Williams. The 

Animal Neurology & Imaging Center worked tirelessly, 

treating her for everything while searching 

for answers, but finally helped Sabine along while 

Rory and Susan held her. Final results are still pending, 

but tests point to Sabine’s nervous system being 

attacked by a virus, or her own immune system 

failing. Rory put together a lovely tribute to our 

remarkable girl, which we hope you’ll visit on our 

website. Special thanks also to Shirl Casner & David 

Craig for tremendous help with bills.

New Meat Van!

Lonely Hearts Club loses two members! Our 

beautiful nine-year-old high-content wolfdog, 

Riot, lost her long-time companion, 

Axel, to cancer. Like us, canines are social 

beings who are not meant to live alone, but 

just like us, getting along with one another is 

one of the most challenging aspects of life. 

We decided to see if our younger high-content 

wolf-dog bachelor, Cinder might be a 

good match for Riot. Their first meeting was 

full of high excitement. We aren’t sure Cinder 

had ever been around another canine 

and he couldn’t keep his teeth off of Riot, in 

a canine-friendly way. After a few days, we 

felt ltthat t our “Pocket tWolf lfPrincess” was missing 

her former neighbors too much. Leyton 

and Rae moved the newly matched pair back 

to Riot’s old habitat. It was Cinder’s first time 

on a leash, but he did very well. Much posturing, 

snarling and excitement accompanied 

the reunion and it’s been a great match so far!

meat donations! Our sanctuary is in 

a remote location, and it is vital for 

us to have reliable transportation 

for our rescues and for the supplies 

they need. Dave made sure it has 

the best of everything, including a 

lift for our heavy meat barrels! We 

love feeding our rescues the food 

they crave and deserve. On behalf

Shaggy-Dog 

Our rescue Shaggydog is one of a family 

of 11 high-content wolf-dogs we rescued 

from a failing breeding facility where 

they languished in tiny, filthy cages with 

cement or plywood floors. No one had 

touched them for over three years, and 

no one remembered their names. They 

all had various health issues from years 

of neglect and possible inbreeding including 

weak bones and misaligned 

jaws. A few years earlier, long-time supporter, 

Parris McBride-Martin, asked us

if she could make a donation toward 

naming a rescue after a character in 

her famous husband’s books. This once 

forgotten pack seemed like the perfect 

choice. And so, our long suffering family 

became our Westeros Pack and their 

lives utterly transformed under the care 

of the Martins. 

We noticed that Shaggydog was limping 

and a trip to the vet revealed that 

the bones in his toe were deteriorating. 

That toe was removed but the biopsy 

was inconclusive. We watched him 

closely, and sadly, he was not getting 

better. Finding that another of his toes 

began to deteriorate as well, our vet 

thought it safest to leave him with three 

good legs and further testing did not 

show any other sign of disease. Shaggydog 

healed beautifully and returned 

to his brothers Summer and Jon Snow, 

and sister Shae and is getting around 

very well. Team Wild Spirit would like to 

howl out our most heart-felt thank you 

to Pack Mama, Parris, for covering Shaggydog’s 

vet bill! We love you, Parris!

PACKages & Encounters 

We are excited to announce ten one-of-a-kind experiences 

available now! Our custom Encounters and Encounter ‘Pack’ages 

are designed to give individuals and groups a personal, interactive 

and unforgettable experience with our social rescues. 

Encounters are single activities designed for a day trip that span 

20 minutes to 1 hour in length. Encounter ‘Pack’ages include 

one or more nights stay in our Campground, Cabin, Wolf Den 

Lodge or Retreat Center, multiple Tours and Encounters, with 

some even including meals. Each experience varies in exertion 

level. Guests may reserve Encounters and ‘Pack’ages in advance

Looking Good Nimoy 

Good news for our mid-content wolfdog! 

Our smiling boy was diagnosed 

with Pannus, a disease of the corneas. 

He was prescribed eye drops twice 

per day, and we are thrilled to report 

they are working! Nimoy will continue 

with the drops and then go for another 

check-up. Thank you David and Loretta 

Frow for taking such great care of 

Nimoy for all these years, and thanks 

to Laurie Graves for help with his bills!

Flurry’s Eye Surgery

Katrina’s Therapy 

Katrina is doing so well after her 

knee surgery and we are thrilled to 

show you her smile as she enjoyed 

a physical therapy walk with Nicole 

Schepker, our program director. Wild 

Spirit staff and volunteers gave Katrina 

physical therapy four times a day 

and she is fully healed! We thank you

Brutus Update 

Our handsome 9-year-old was back at 

the vet to have a tumor removed from 

his side. He gave us a scare earlier in the 

year with a neurological issue that was 

cleared up with antibiotics for meningitis. 

His tumor was cancerous, but we’re 

hoping for the best, and will make sure 

he does not suffer. Howling thank you to 

our dear friends Christine Crawford and 

Kathy Alls, for helping with his vet bills!
