Investing in Maine
While New England Music Camp is celebrating its’ 80th anniversary this summer, the planning for this
magical place actually began about 10 years before its 1937 founding, primarily through the energy and vision
of Dorothy Marden. It was Dorothy who inspired a team to build the historic Amphitheater, The Bowl in the
Pines, in 1930. Today The Bowl is still one of the nation’s largest outdoor performance venues. The rendering
in our Visitor’s Center, which we believe was the original concept for this extraordinary campus, depicts a plan
centered around The Lodge and The Bowl.
It was clear from these early plans that this was to be a landmark, a multi-purpose destination on a scale
that could make a difference in Maine. Indeed, Snow Pond Center for the Arts is poised to make that dream a
reality. Building on the NEMC summer music programs, the Snow Pond Center for the Arts campus now is in
continuous use all year, with education, arts, recreation and a growing variety of community activities. With the
recent approval of the Snow Pond Arts Academy – Maine’s first public high school dedicated to the Performing
Arts - the primary pieces of our overall strategic plan are now in place. We are pleased with the support,
progress, and momentum that has been built over the last 36 months. Last summer, with the generous
support from our Snow Pond and NEMC families, we raised over $400,000 and were able to complete the
major renovations needed to winterize and upgrade our Lodge, which is now available for use year-round.
Additional space and infrastructure improvements will accommodate the expanding demands for all of the
Snow Pond programs.
This summer we have a similar goal for two essential building projects - an infrastructure upgrade to our
historic Bowl for power, lighting, and sound equipment needed for larger scale events, and the construction
of a new building that will house the Enhanced Learning Center (Out of School Programs), for school children
from throughout Central Maine. Support for start-up operational costs, especially for the Snow Pond Arts
Academy, will help us attract students, grow, and flourish.
We now have a real opportunity to complete Dorothy’s vision by making Snow Pond Center for the Arts a
landmark cultural and educational institution in Maine. Philanthropy makes the work we do possible; it is now
that we ask you to invest in our children, in the community, and in Maine.
Thanks to All!
