Welcome to NEMC at
Snow Pond Center for the Arts!
We are so excited that you have chosen to join us
for our 80th anniversary season here on the shores of
Lake Messalonskee! It has been a busy winter here on the
campus as we continued the work necessary to upgrade
and renovate the buildings and grounds surrounding us
on over 50 acres. Fortunately, the Maine winter was rather
gentle this year, so we made great progress! We hope you
will take some time while you are here to walk around the
beautiful grounds, and enjoy the historic buildings and
spectacular landscapes that we are fortunate enough to
enjoy every day.
It takes a village to maintain this special space, and
we would like to take a moment to recognize a few people
who have been instrumental in helping us accomplish
so much over this past year. Our neighbors to the south,
Bryan Bacon and his sons Nick and Adam, have dedicated
hundreds, if not thousands of hours here doing all of the
excavation work on campus. They are a joy to work with,
and have truly come to be members of our extended
family. Their work is exceptional, but their support and
willingness to help at all hours of the day—and night—is
appreciated more than they will ever know. There are
not words to thank them enough! Our own construction
staff has also put forth an extraordinary effort for the past
year, assuring that all of the projects started as soon as
camp closed last September were completed in time for
us to open this spring. Andrew and Paul Wiggin would
certainly make their great-grandfather proud, and Bert
Glines has once again helped complete dozens of projects
that have improved the lives of many now here. There are
so many others that have demonstrated dedication and
commitment throughout this year, and to all of them, we
are extremely grateful.
In celebration of the 80th anniversary of New
England Music Camp, we will welcome back hundreds of
alumni throughout the summer, as well as some special
alumni guests who will share their exceptional talents
with our campers and the greater community. Details
about many of those visits can be found later in this
magazine, and we hope all of you will be able to join us
during their visits as well. In early July, former campers
Lynn Chen and Nick Jandl will return for a couple of days
to share their experiences as successful television and
screen actors with the campers. Later in July, we cannot
wait to welcome back another former camper, Giora
Schmidt, an outstanding violinist who will perform a
number of times during his week in residence. We are so
grateful that these very successful alumni are willing to
share their valuable time and talents with our campers
and the community. Please watch for more details about
their visits in the local newspapers.
To all of our alumni that will visit at some point
during the summer, please know how very much we
appreciate your continued support of NEMC. This little
gem started 80 years ago by Paul and Nina Wiggin has
produced thousands of alumni that continue to make
NEMC a priority in their lives. We hope your return this
summer will help you relive some of the magic that we
know you experienced here in the past, whether it be last
summer, or 40 or more years ago.
To those of you here for the first time, we are so
happy you have found us! We want you to return often,
and become members of this wonderful family and
community. Please try to introduce yourself to us when
you are here, and be ready for the magic of NEMC and
Snow Pond to get under your skin and into your hearts.
We know it is a special place we have here, and it brings us
great pleasure to share it with all of you.
Here’s to summer filled with beautiful music and great
friendships!
The Wiggin Family
Our 80th Summer at Snow Pond
Matthew Wiggin
This summer New England Music
Camp is celebrating its 80th summer
along the shores of Lake Messalonskee.
It is hard to believe what this place
has become and how many lives have
been changed by the magic found at
Snow Pond. While thinking about
the number of musicians that have
stepped onto the Bowl stage for a
weekend concert, or performed in a
recital at Alumni Hall, or jumped off the
dock to cool off in the summer air, it is hard
not to think about what my great-grandfather
would think if he could see the place that Snow Pond
Center for the Arts has become today.
When Paul Wiggin first started New England Music
Camp in 1937, he was trying to open a summer music
camp that was not only about cultivating young musician’s
talents, but also giving students an outlet to grow socially.
Today, if you walk onto the Snow Pond campus on any
given day, you will see students, young and old, that are
still flourishing under my great-grandfather’s original
mission. However, it is not just NEMC that is carrying
out that same mission, there are now three summer
programs: The Snow Pond Music Festival, New England
Music Camp, and the New England Adult Music Camp,
as well as two additional year-round programs: The Snow
Pond Community Music School and the new Snow Pond
Arts Academy. Over the course of my life, I have watched
this place grow to a place where now, artists of all ages are
being exposed to the magic of
Snow Pond.
The Snow Pond Music
Festival, now in its fourth
summer, has become an
unbelievable opportunity for
college and graduate level
musicians to cultivate their
talents with some of the
worlds’ top musical artists
from around the world during
the month of June. Under
the direction of longtime
NEMC Faculty Member, Artistic Director
Gail Levinsky has helped SPMF blossom
to include over one hundred students,
spanning four distinct programs.
Original SPMF programs, The
Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone
Institute and the Maine Chamber
Music Seminar, are now joined by the
Snow Pond Composers Workshop
and the Ted Atkatz Percussion Seminar.
As one SPMF participant said, “Three
months later, I am still in awe of the lifechanging
experience I had at SPMF this last
summer. Playing alongside such dedicated and talented
professionals and students was absolutely incredible.” This
summer, SPMF runs from June 5th to June 19th.
New England Music Camp continues to be the
centerpiece and crown jewel of Snow Pond Center for
the Arts. Now in its 80th season, NEMC continues to
offer opportunities for talented students ages 11-18, in
orchestra, band, choir, jazz, voice, musical theater, piano,
guitar, and chamber music. Mornings continue to be
filled with rigorous music lessons, classes, workshops,
and rehearsals, while the afternoon is spent enjoying the
Maine outdoors with various recreational activities like
sailing, swimming, basketball, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee.
Students continue to be the focal point of our summer
performances, having the opportunity to perform every
weekend in our free concerts at the Bowl In The Pines,
and also on weekly honor recitals at Alumni Hall. Summer
Music Series events, The 37th Annual NEMC POPS
Concert and Little Women,
The Broadway Musical all
feature NEMC students as
well. I think one NEMC
camper said it best: “Not
only does does it give me the
opportunity to develop my
skills in music, but it allows
me to do it surrounded by
some of the best people I
have ever met… It is my
second home.”
4

New England Adult Music Camp will enjoy its
fourth year this summer from August 22nd to August
28th. NEAMC welcomes adult musicians of all levels
from across the country to enjoy a week of traditional
music camp. Program Director Diane Muffitt, along with
NEMC staff member Cheryl Campbell, have now given
adults the opportunity to spend a week at NEMC. The
only difference is, at NEAMC, they get happy hour! I
cannot tell you how many times I go on recruiting trips
for NEMC and a teacher or parent says, “I want to go to
NEMC!” Well, NOW YOU CAN!
When I came back to work at Snow Pond four years
ago to assist my parents in the expansion of all of our
programs, I kept saying, “Why don’t we do special events?
Why don’t we have a concert series? We have the second
largest amphitheater in the United States….why don’t
we get some special performers every summer to come
and do concerts there.” The response was, “Okay….do it.”
Here we now are in our third summer of presenting our
Summer Music Series, and we are thrilled to bring some
incredible performances to Snow Pond. From the new
Snow Pond Symphony with musicians and faculty drawn
from all of Snow Pond’s different programs, December 63’:
The Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Tribute, the above
mentioned POPS Concert and Little Women, Jazz Under
the Stars with the Al Corey Band, or The Ballroom Thieves
with the Maine Youth Rock Orchestra, there is something
for everyone this summer.
As I sit down to think about everything that is
happening this summer, I cannot imagine what Paul
would be thinking or what he would say if he could see
what his vision has grown to. May we all continue to
pursue his mission of spreading music and the arts to
people of all ages. Here’s to our 80th summer, and here’s
to many, many, many, more to come! Peace.
Coming Full Circle
Joel Simon
As a kid, I never
wanted to go to a
summer camp where
the focus was to learn
how to make lanyard
and tile ashtrays. I also
didn’t want to go to a
camp that my school
friends attended. I
wanted to be part of
something more. I
wanted diversity. I
wanted to spend those all-important summers immersing
myself in something different, larger than myself, in a
place that would satisfy, and further my passion for my
love of music. I wanted to surround myself with people
who sought the same things for themselves.
Summer camps are a huge opportunity to be the
self you truly want to be without any baggage, history,
preconceptions or pressures. A release. An escape. A
complete departure from the environment you are
accustomed to.
NEMC was that place for me. The many summers I
spent there not only changed my life, but also proved to
be the most profound and meaningful times of my youth.
Those summers helped craft the person I am today, and
afforded me the life that I live today with my wife and two
daughters.
One of my most recurring memories is walking down
the path to my cabin through the woods. All I heard was
music coming from 360 degrees around me. Violins,
pianos, woodwinds, voice, brass, percussion, all were
colors that painted a magnificent sonic landscape. That
music was seamlessly orchestrated with the sounds of
nature, laughter and joy.
I remember the recitals, the Saturday concerts and, of
course, the Sunday concerts at the Bowl. The campfires,
sports, POPS Concerts, putting the tire over the flagpole
in the middle of the night, raiding the girls dorms, shortsheeting
our friends beds, putting the canoe oars on
top of Alumni Hall spelling inappropriate things, all the
banquets, making out with my “girlfriends” at the “Y”...a
lot. I could go on and on. Even as I write this, I well up
with tears remembering all the amazing experiences that
took place for me there.
It was perfection. Perfection situated on a magnificent
6
campus on Lake Messalonskee. Heaven.
Many of the friends I made during those summers
of the early 80’s, I still have in my life today. Physical
distances between us have diminished due to technology
and social media, however, the love and admiration
we still share for each other is incredibly present and
brilliantly palpable.
One of the things that I find astounding, but
certainly not surprising, is that most all of the campers
I met at NEMC have all gone on to do great and
meaningful things. Professional musicians, doctors, award
winning screenwriters, directors, editors and actors,
teachers, CEO’s, CMO’s, global advertising executives,
entrepreneurs,
and of course,
the accidental,
attorney, by
default…
I always wanted
to be in the music
business but was
practical, realistic
and honest about
the odds of making
it a livelihood
to support the
lifestyle I wanted
for myself, and for
my eventual family.
Joel Simon at Reid State park when he was a
camper at NEMC.
I always had bands, and performed throughout high school
and college, but thought it would always remain a beloved
hobby and side gig.
After attending Cornell University with aspirations
of having a career in business and law, someone in the
music industry heard one of my demo tapes of my work
and gave me a shot. I never looked back. I also ended up
hiring that person to work for me many years later.
I founded JSM Music, which is a global commercial
music production leader for the world’s most influential
and compelling brands for over 25 years. Constantly
evolving and always choosing to take the roads less
traveled, JSM remains ahead of the curve by exclusively
securing the finest global creative musical talent, while
always nurturing and expanding its unique original vibe,
philosophy and creative vision. Located in our beautiful
10,000 Sq. Ft Noho Penthouse studios in downtown

NYC, JSM is one of the worlds most comprehensive
recording and creative resources.
Embracing new ideas and technologies, with the goal
of working towards powerful creative and quantifiable
solutions for its clients, JSM has paved the way in musical
equities and sonic branding. Our work has been featured in
Billboard, Creativity, Ad Age, New York Post, Adweek, NY
Times, Forbes, Business Insider, Crain’s New York Business,
Buzzfeed, Mashable, Mix, Co. Create, Fast Company,
Entrepreneur, Inc., among countless others, globally.
Our work has been awarded dozens of gold,
silver, and bronze Clio’s, Grammy Awards, multiple
AICP awards and Cannes Lions, 3 Emmy’s, over a dozen
Addy’s, One Show awards, multiple London International
Awards, Gold Ad Age Hispanic Creative Advertising
Awards, countless Effie Awards, the 2014 AMP Best
Song Award for GoDaddy’s 2014 Super Bowl Ad “Body
Builder”, 2016 AMP Award for Most Effective Use of
Music in a Global Campaign. JSM holds the record of
creating and producing the music for the most Super
Bowl commercials of all time.
I was honored to be a Crain’s Business 40 Under
40 honoree in 2007, and serve as frequent judge of
creative work for the global advertising and music
industries, including; MIDEM, Advertising Week,
Billboard Music Conferences and AICP. I try to do
as many public presentations, university seminars and
television interviews, as possible. I was recently called
on by Bloomberg Television to be its “Mystery Guest”
representing the global advertising and commercial music
production industry. I am also a returning speaker at the
Steinhardt School at NYU, and at my alma mater, Cornell
University.
With all the years that have gone by since my time at
NEMC, I still think about that place every day. Seriously,
everyday. My business facilities are constructed in such
a way that there are long hallways with a dozen studios
on either side. As I walk down those hallways, all I hear
is music coming from 360 degrees around me. Violins,
pianos, woodwinds, voice, brass, percussion, all are now
colors that paint a magnificent sonic landscape, now, of
my own. That music is seamlessly orchestrated with the
sounds of nature, laughter and joy emanating from the
park that sits below our penthouse location in the heart
of downtown NoHo, NYC. Just like when I used to walk
down the path to my cabin through the woods at NEMC
when I was a kid.
Life coming full circle. Perfection. Gratitude.
Snow Pond Community Music School
“Igniting a life long love of music”
Traditional and Suzuki Instruction
We offer individual, semi-private and group lessons
for many instruments and voice. This year, over 120
students took individual lessons in piano, voice,
violin, cello, guitar and more.
Students who enroll in Pineland Suzuki School at
SPCMS have weekly individual lessons and also
participate in Suzuki group classes, theory and
orchestra. Our teaching faculty accept students
of all levels and all ages, from the youngest
preschoolers in our Suzuki program to adults.
Lessons and group classes are focused not only
on instrumental and musical skills, but on helping
students learn to focus, concentrate and feel
confident in their abilities. Students are encouraged
to share what they’ve learned with others through
performance. Their hard work and dedication was
featured at many recitals and community events.
The evidence is compelling
When students are exposed to the arts they show improved:
• Critical Thinking Skills • Collaboration Skills • Self-Esteem
• Leadership • Communication Skills • Test Scores
8

Performance Opportunities
All students benefit from performance opportunities to share their musical accomplishments. Performing is a vital
learning experience for each student and an opportunity to showcase Snow Pond’s programs. SPCMS students
frequently perform at schools, hospitals, retirement communities and community events.
Pineland Suzuki School students performed during the
intermission for the Al Corey Big Band at Granite Hill
Estates’ Big Band Bash last summer.
SPCMS hosted a “Cookies and Cocoa with Santa” event in
December that featured several student performers, raised
money for our school and gathered toys for the children living
at the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter.
Pineland Suzuki School held their annual benefit concert in March, featuring every student in the program, as well as several local
orchestra musicians. The theme was “Celebrating Orchestras in Maine!”
Outreach Programs
Snow Pond’s Outreach Programs make music more
accessible to young people in the community.
Additionally, these programs raise awareness of the value
of music education. All outreach programs are offered
tuition-free to ensure every child is given the opportunity
to participate. Partner programs this year included: the
Alfond Youth Center in Waterville, the AYC’s RSU 18
After School Program in Oakland, the City of Augusta’s
After-School Program at their four elementary schools.
Students in the Percussion Club at the City of Augusta School
Age Childcare Program learned about the basic elements of
rhythm while learning to play Djembes.
9

Adult Education
We believe group classes and ensembles are important opportunities for adults. Current programs include our steel drum
band The Snow Pond Pantasticks, singing classes, African Drumming workshops and Brazilian Samba School classes. An
expanded curriculum is being developed which will soon include many more opportunities!
On May 1st, the Snow Pond Pantasticks performed at the
26th Annual New England Steel Drum Festival which was
held in Conway, NH. Nineteen bands from Maine, New
Hampshire and Vermont gathered to perform and share
their love of music from the Caribbean.
Satellite Programs
SPCMS provides onsite
music lessons in piano, voice,
strings and guitar to over 20
Kents Hill School students
during their school day. In April, several of these students
New Beginnings
Robin Rilette
Host of MPBN’s program Morning Classical Music
As I write, it’s a beautiful, bright, blue dream of a day in
Maine. Outside my window I see the bright red flash of
a cardinal, the muted tones of a tufted titmouse and a lot
of green. Leaves, shoots and new grass are all reminders
of the wonderful color yet to come. There’s a reason why
spring is such a metaphor for growth, change and new
beginnings.
2016 brings with it some important and exciting
changes in the musical and cultural landscape of Maine.
Both MPBN and Snow Pond Center for the Arts are
creating new opportunities for lives to be enriched and
transformed through the power of music and education.
Snow Pond Arts Academy is the first performing arts
based public high school in the state of Maine. SPAA’s
curriculum integrates music, theatre and dance with
the study of English, language arts, social studies, world
languages and science, technology, engineering and math.
This combination creates a climate in which creativity;
critical thinking and communication skills are cultivated.
Here’s just one example: think back to the last time you
saw a piano trio, a string quartet or duo perform. A nod,
a glance, a tilt of the head are just a few of the many subtle
and non-verbal cues that are learned when you create music
in a group. It’s small group communication at its best.
MPBN hears from thousands of listeners every year
about the power of music to enhance the lives of individuals
and communities. That’s why this spring MPBN
launched a second service devoted to the arts and classical
music, Maine Public Classical. For years our audience
has asked for both more news and information programming
and more music. There’s simply never been enough
“real estate” on a single radio signal to meet these needs.
Maine Public Classical is the answer that brings more
classical, more jazz and more opera to music lovers.
In addition to broadcasting music from Maine Stage,
the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, Maine Public Classical now offers the Boston
Symphony Orchestra as part of the evening concerts. Rich
Tozier’s Jazz Tonight is now heard on Fridays and joined
by Marian McPartland and Jazz After Hours. A listener
favorite and tradition on MPBN, Down Memory Lane, is
back on the air on Friday afternoons at 2:00 in an expanded
edition. Weekday mornings I’ll be sharing classical
music with you as always, and on Thursdays connecting
Mainers with opportunities to hear live classical performance
on Prelude, a new tradition on Maine Public Classical.
Tradition combines with innovation for both MPBN
and Snow Pond Center for the Arts. Both organizations
are institutions in Maine, both are committed to providing
daily opportunities to hear, appreciate and participate
in the cultural life of our region, and both are finding new,
exciting and inventive ways to enrich the lives of those we
serve.
When I was a child my parents let my sister and me
listen to the radio in their bedroom for a half hour or so
before turning in for the night. I still vividly remember
one night in particular. Over the airwaves came a voice
that made everything else around me disappear. It was a
powerful experience and one that cemented my love of
music, of radio and of the visceral thrill of being part of
something that is both immensely present and eternal.
All these years later, that same feeling comes over me
whenever I hear Barbra Streisand hit that high note while
singing People.
Imagine how many thrilling moments Snow Pond
Center for the Arts and Maine Public Classical will bring
to people of all ages. Imagine how many students who
attend Snow Pond Arts Academy or listen to music on
Maine Public Classical will go on to create, compose,
play and share their talent and love of music with future
generations.
It’s a privilege and a pleasure to be affiliated with two such
groups of talented, creative, forward-thinking, and innovative
people. Here’s to the future!
The Snow Pond Arts
Maine native has been teaching
at the Juilliard School since
2000 and has held positions
throughout the United
States and Europe during his
remarkable career. Poulin was
Dean of the dance department of the Conservatoire de
“ When I was a young dancer, like all of my friends, I
loved to socialize on a Friday night but I always went home
at a reasonable time. I went to bed early as I had to get up
to go to work at an ice cream joint and I wanted to take
care of my body so that I could be my best in the dance
studio. When I was a child we lived in a three bedroon
home at 15 Arsenal Street in Augusta. We didn’t have
much that was extra. My father worked night and day,
often at several jobs simultaneously including his role as
custodian of Old Fort Western so that we always had what
we needed. My nickname was Alphy and I was number
eleven of fourteen children. My mother was always in the
kitchen, doing laundry or tending to cuts, scrapes and
heartaches. We listened to Opera on the radio and Red
Sox games on the little black and white TV. There was
always laughter and an extra place at the table for whoever
stopped by for supper. “
What brought you to New England Music Camp or
NEMC?
My Father, Dr. Frank Scimonelli, was the trumpet and
Post Horn soloist with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington,
D.C. for 26 years. In his youth, he got to know Dr. Paul
Wiggin, the founder of the camp. Dr. Wiggin invited dad
to come to camp and solo with the symphonic band in
1949, and he continued to do so until the 1990’s. As my
brothers and I got older and progressed musically, we
were also invited to camp. That’s the short story!
What was the biggest lesson you learned at NEMC?
What it took to be a good, professional musician.
What is your fondest memory (crazy, funny,
meaningful) of your time at NEMC?
SO many! Cookouts, banquet, Reid State Park, the
Mud Bowl in ’67, the waterfront, and all the girls I met!
What are you doing now?
I recently retired from my full time position as
Director of Strings at the Landon School in Bethesda,
MD after 16 years. I am playing with several big band jazz
bands, 2 orchestras, and singing with the Thomas Circle
Singers in Washington, DC. Also just finished writing my
first book, a biography of Roy Sievers, former home run
champ of the Washington Senators from 1954 -1959
What are some of the biggest accomplishments
you’ve had the pleasure of experiencing in your
career?
Got to play in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and The
Kennedy Center, among many other great venues. Played
for 3 Presidential Galas. Played with Aretha Franklin.
Coolest person you’ve met in your career?
SO many! Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., Red Skelton,
Peggy Lee, The Fifth Dimension, Ron Carter, Buster
Williams, Billy Eckstein, Lynn Anderson, Minnie Pearl,
many other pop, country, and jazz greats, Condoleezza
Rice, Jimmy Carter and other political dignitaries.
The Mission for Snow Pond Center for the
Arts: To transform our community through
arts education. Strategically, we have three
broad, longer-term objectives.
To Be An Innovative Learning Center, that:
• Welcomes students of all ages to engage in
music and other arts
• Provides an inclusive, safe, and nurturing
environment that stimulates creativity,
competence, confidence and a commitment
to learning
• Partners with public and private schools in
the Central Maine region to provide equal
access to learning opportunities in the arts for
all students
• Identifies and develops the potential and
values of each student
• Promotes appreciation, performance, and
teaching of the arts, and raises awareness
that the arts are an integral part of all learning
To Be An Engaging Community Resource,
that:
• Brings our residents and visitors together
for social interaction and sharing of varied
cultural, educational, and recreational
experiences
• Engages understanding of the roles of
the community, family, and individuals in
the creation of a vibrant and prosperous
place to live [with a special emphasis on
environmental awareness]
To Be A Stimulus For Sustainable
Economic Growth, that:
• Attracts educators, artists, entrepreneurs,
and professionals to work and live in this
area
• Offers programs, events, and venues to
attract visitors, tourists, and performers
• Expands and enriches the summer
experience for our community
“Teaching matters when it transforms
a student, music matters when it
transforms a community.”
The Lodge, Center of
Life at Snow Pond
Although the Bowl in the Pines is arguably the
most iconic building on the Snow Pond property, it is the
Lodge where almost everyone who attends any of the programs
here eventually congregate. It is also one of the oldest
buildings on the property, and preserving its historical
integrity, while also meeting the needs and codes of today
has been a particular challenge. With the recent renovations
on this wonderful building, we thought it would be
fun to look at its history.
The lodge was one of the original buildings on the
property when a group of musicians leased the property
in 1931 and established the Eastern Music Camp. But
the building itself was built at some point prior to 1928
and was operated as a kosher Jewish resort hotel called
Big Moose Lodge. Both the lodge and an adjacent building,
which is used as a dormitory-style building for camp
programs, were built by the Frank A. Rumery Company
of South Portland. Interestingly, Frank’s great-grandson
Scott, raised in Cape Elizabeth, attended NEMC as a
camper in the 1980’s, and only then learned of the connection
to the property! Scott returned to camp as a counselor,
head counselor, and guest conductor, and both of his
daughters, Anika and Claire, have been campers as well.
Actually, Claire is here this summer working as a counselor
and lifeguard. The Rumery connection continues!
The lower level of the Lodge has not changed significantly
in almost 100 years. The main dining room continues
to be the center of almost all of the meals served at
Snow Pond, and the porches and smaller dining room provide
additional seating. The small lounge continues to be a
gathering place for staff and guests alike. But these spaces
have offered a variety of creative uses throughout the years
as well. Prior to the construction of Alumni Hall in 1963,
recitals were held in the main dining room, as were dances.
The lounge has also served as the camp canteen, laundry
distribution center, and even now is the central operation
center for the New England Adult Music Camp in August.
The two upper floors continue to house faculty and staff
during all of the summer programs, providing a variety of
individual rooms and small “apartments”.
Much of the work that has occurred in the Lodge
over the past few years is not readily visible to the general
public. The entire building has been insulated, re-wired
(there were miles of cloth-covered wire in the walls!) and a
fire-response system installed. New windows were added,
and the original wood floors have been restored. The first
floor is now heated and air conditioned, allowing for yearround
use. New bathrooms were added for the staff, and
most of the furnishings were updated. More easily seen is
the beautiful new patio that was completed last summer,
and the new landscaping. And now, the kitchen has been
fully remodeled and modernized, new ADA accessible
bathrooms have been added to the main floor, one of the
porches has doubled in size to allow for additional seating
and use, and a magnificent sun deck has been added to
the second floor. And yet, from the outside, this historical
building still looks very similar to the original Rumery
construction.
The Lodge is now a fully functional year round building.
In addition to all of the summer programs, there are
weddings, meetings, and even pond hockey tournaments
that find a comfortable, functional, and spectacular location
overlooking the shores of Messalonskee. As stewards
of this special place, we hope it will continue to be a welcoming
host to many more generations of guests. What a
wonderful tribute to that builder from South Portland!
Maine Arts Commission
Julie A. Richard
Executive Director
Created in 1965 by the Maine legislature, the Maine
Arts Commission provides services and allocates state
and federal funding to support the state’s arts, creative,
and cultural sector for the benefit of Maine’s citizens, visitors,
and the economies of communities across the state.
It supports programs and partnerships that:
• Promote stronger and wider delivery of services within
the arts and culture communities of Maine;
• Recognize the potential for advancing the arts through
technology, in education, and in state and local economies;
• Preserve and strengthen Maine’s traditional arts;
• Focus on opportunities for all of Maine’s citizens,
native peoples, and especially underserved populations
and persons with disabilities to have meaningful
encounters with art, artists, and art-making; and
• Increase local capacity for arts programs, thus energizing
and broadening support for arts and culture in Maine.
In supporting these activities and pursuing its mission,
the Maine Arts Commission looks for evidence of
public benefit and efficient use of funds and other resources.
Above all, the Maine Arts Commission strives to
be flexible and adaptable, responding to the sector’s needs
and learning from opportunities and challenges, in order
to increase the positive impact arts and culture has on
Maine’s vitality, livability, and prosperity.
Over the past two years, the Maine Arts Commission
has mobilized the State’s arts and culture sector to
develop a new five year Cultural Plan – Fortifying Maine’s
Culture and Creativity. Supported by data gathered from
every zip code in the State with over 6,500 participants,
the Commission developed the following five priorities:
Priority 1. Leverage Investment to Strengthen and Better
Capitalize the Arts, Creative, and Cultural Sector
• Pursue fund development strategies difficult for artists
and organizations to pursue on their own.
• Continue professional development opportunities for
artists and arts workers.
• Continue to promote community development
through the arts, creativity and culture.
Priority 2. Increase Awareness
• Create Maine Arts brand awareness.
• Encourage research and widely disseminate findings
to increase the understanding of arts, creative, and
cultural sector impacts and value.
• Increase arts, creative, and cultural sector recognition
38
and celebrate success.
• Use Maine’s Bicentennial in 2020 as a marker in time
when arts, creative, and cultural sector awareness will
be greater than ever before.
Priority 3. Foster Arts Education and Lifelong Learning
• Strengthen PK-12 arts education for all students.
• Support collaboration between PK-12 arts education
and community cultural organizations.
• Grow and expand Maine Arts Commission’s PK-12
Arts Education efforts.
• Continue working with the Department of Education
to strengthen PK-12 arts education.
• Collaborate with higher education institutions.
• Fortify Maine Arts Commission’s lifelong learning
efforts.
Priority 4. Build Arts & Tourism Synergy
• Build a stronger bridge with the Office of Tourism
and the Maine Tourism Association.
• Help strengthen cultural sector capacity to better
utilize technology for marketing and PR.
• Create and disseminate cultural tourism best practices
and guidelines.
Priority 5. Strengthen Maine Arts Commission’s
capacity and stewardship
• Ensure the Maine Arts Commission’s capacity remains
commensurate with planned growth.
• Explore the feasibility of a 501(c)(3) arm and the
proposed name, ArtsEngageME.
• Build a statewide cultural sector network.
• Keep this Cultural Plan current.
The Maine Arts Commission is already well on its
way to achieving some of these priorities. The legislation
to create ArtsEngageME was passed by the Legislature
during this past Legislative session. The Commission has
achieved a 95% response rate of schools surveyed through
our Arts Education Census. And, we are busy planning for
the next Maine International Conference on the Arts to
be held October 6 & 7 in Lewiston.
The Maine Arts Commission would like to congratulate
the Snow Pond Center for the Arts and the New
England Music Camp on another fine season. And the
Commission looks forward to the launch of the Snow
Pond Arts Academy.
Investing in Maine
While New England Music Camp is celebrating its’ 80th anniversary this summer, the planning for this
magical place actually began about 10 years before its 1937 founding, primarily through the energy and vision
of Dorothy Marden. It was Dorothy who inspired a team to build the historic Amphitheater, The Bowl in the
Pines, in 1930. Today The Bowl is still one of the nation’s largest outdoor performance venues. The rendering
in our Visitor’s Center, which we believe was the original concept for this extraordinary campus, depicts a plan
centered around The Lodge and The Bowl.
It was clear from these early plans that this was to be a landmark, a multi-purpose destination on a scale
that could make a difference in Maine. Indeed, Snow Pond Center for the Arts is poised to make that dream a
reality. Building on the NEMC summer music programs, the Snow Pond Center for the Arts campus now is in
continuous use all year, with education, arts, recreation and a growing variety of community activities. With the
recent approval of the Snow Pond Arts Academy – Maine’s first public high school dedicated to the Performing
Arts - the primary pieces of our overall strategic plan are now in place. We are pleased with the support,
progress, and momentum that has been built over the last 36 months. Last summer, with the generous
support from our Snow Pond and NEMC families, we raised over $400,000 and were able to complete the
major renovations needed to winterize and upgrade our Lodge, which is now available for use year-round.
Additional space and infrastructure improvements will accommodate the expanding demands for all of the
Snow Pond programs.
This summer we have a similar goal for two essential building projects - an infrastructure upgrade to our
historic Bowl for power, lighting, and sound equipment needed for larger scale events, and the construction
of a new building that will house the Enhanced Learning Center (Out of School Programs), for school children
from throughout Central Maine. Support for start-up operational costs, especially for the Snow Pond Arts
Academy, will help us attract students, grow, and flourish.
We now have a real opportunity to complete Dorothy’s vision by making Snow Pond Center for the Arts a
landmark cultural and educational institution in Maine. Philanthropy makes the work we do possible; it is now
that we ask you to invest in our children, in the community, and in Maine.
Thanks to All!
John Wiggin
Ideas for Giving:
• Refer a Student: Share information about Snow Pond with
friends, business associates and community members. Referring
a potential student to any of the Snow Pond programs ensures
our success.
• Donate an Instrument: Many students find musical
instruments to be too costly, consider passing along your wellloved
instruments to the Snow Pond’s Instrument
• Volunteering: We have many projects where volunteers could
make an enormous impact
• Financial Giving: We are enormously grateful for your gifts
in support of scholarships, facilities, and programs. Gifts or
pledges of any amount are welcome and contributions can easily
