CGA's Annual Year End Awards Banquet 

and Convention 2011 

The CGA Annual Convention and Awards Banquet is an event not to be missed. 

This is when the CGA Officers and Directors get dressed up to celebrate the 

evening. All the members, the Queen and Princesses and the honorees of the 

evening look truly amazing. 

The festivities begin Friday evening November 18 at 6:30 pm. with a “Welcome 

Night” to inclued Bingo and games for the kids. Saturday Morning at 9:00 am we will 

beging with the Rules & Judges/Riders/General membership meeting. This meeting 

is very important and all members are encouraged to attend and become involved in 

the decisions that must be made to help CGA to continue to improve. Remember if 

you have an item you wish to have voted on you must submit it to the State Office 

30 days prior to the meeting. At 12:00 if need be we will break for lunch and reconvene 

at 1:00 pm after lunch to finish the meeting. 

Voting for Officers & Directors will begin at 10:00 am. All ballots must be cast by 2:00 

pm so they can be counted before the awards ceremony. All CGA members in good 

standing, 12 years of age and over are allowed to vote. 

After the General Membership Meeting is over it's time to get out your fanciest, 

nicest outfits and head for the banquet hall for the "main" event of Convention, the 

presentation of the awards. Seating will begin at 5:00 pm with awards starting at 5:30 

pm. There are a large amount of awards this year and each and every one has been 

earned by the rider over the past 2010-2011 season. 

The Awards Presentation is followed by a dance which lasts long into the night as 

everyone celebrates the season just past and the new season that is already 

underway. This is the most wonderful way to end the year and a great way to see 

the new friends that you made at the State Finals in July. 

Sunday Morning at 9:00 am the Board of Directors will meet to begin planning the 

upcoming year and State Sponsored Shows. This is the first meeting of the newly 

installed Officers & Directors. This meeting is open to all members but only district 

delegates and directors may vote at this meeting. However, this meeting is very 

informative and all members are urged to attend and find out what is happening in 

CGA 

Dinner seating is limited to 300 and is on a first come first served basis so get your 

reservations in early. Anyone who wishes to go up on stage and receive their award 

must check in with the CGA Office no later than 2:00 P.M. on Saturday the 19th. 

There is quite a bit of staging to coordinate all the awards and we must know ahead 

of time that you will want to be called up to receive your award.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 

Hello CGA, 

District shows are under way and the weather has been holding for everyone other 

than fires. Hopefully know one is getting affected to badly with all the fires. Along 

with districts running this is the month for Fall Jamboree in the North and Central 

areas. The north is hosted by District 49,4 at the new district 49 arena in Butte 

Valley and the Central is being hosted by District 14, 40 at the elks Rodeo Grounds 

in Santa Maria. Thank you districts for stepping up and being willing to host these 

State Sponsored Shows. Riders remember these are State Shows so State rules 

apply. If a district is doing something that they don’t normally do it could possibly 

be because these are state shows and they have a few different rules to follow. 

They will still need help from everyone in attendance with working in the arena and 

gate. It’s a great time for everyone to get together since state show. 

Districts, have you got your show schedule into state office, your new contract 

signed and mailed in with contact information on it. Checked your software to 

make sure your license key isn’t going to expire soon. Remember it is against CGA 

rules to manipulate your computer or software in order to use it if your license key 

has expired. You need to have your delegate names into state office also, there will 

be a board meeting at convention and you want your delegate to be able to vote. 

Yes, its convention time again, and with convention comes elections. This is a big 

election year so everyone wants to make sure your membership is paid so you can 

vote. It must be paid and received in state office prior to convention if you plan on 

voting at convention. Remember if you are not going to convention you need to 

send in a request to receive an ABSENTEE BALLOT, if you do not request one you 

will not be able to vote if you don’t attend. If you request an ABSENTTEE 

BALLOT IT MUST BE RETURNED you will not be able to vote at convention if 

you requested a ballot and then decided to show up. They must be mailed back not 

brought to convention. We have no way of knowing if you returned your ballot or 

not. We only keep track of who requests but when they come back we don’t know 

who’s they are so we have no way of knowing if you voted already or not. You 

have to be a member in good standing in order to vote. Just because your child 

may be a member does not always mean the parent is so if you as a parent want to 

vote you need to become a member also. You have to be 12 or over in order to 

vote. 

Convention is in Modesto this year due to costs. The State office shopped around 

and Modesto was willing to give us the best rate this year so we didn’t have to 

raise convention fees and loose too much money at convention. Hopefully 

everyone will still be able to attend. 

Nominations are open for elections. All position are up for voting this year, so if 

you have wanted to get involved in CGA at the next level this is the year to step 

up. Any one nominated needs to remember that you need to send in an acceptance 

to state office or your nomination will be dropped. It is up to you to send in the 

acceptance.

Corner 

"The Judge’s Corner" has appeared in this paper with a varying degree of regularity 

since 1991. CGA Judges, Members and Work Crew are invited to submit difficult calls 

or unusual questions that occur so that others can learn from their experiences. The 

best ones (unusual or just plain odd) will be printed here. 

If you have input for this column, please send your question to the CGA State Office. 

Your question will be answered by a Master Judge and the Rules Chairman. If there 

is any disagreement, it will be submitted to the Rules Committee and MAC for final 

resolution.

Question: What type of materials can the speedball cone be made out of? 

Answer: Per the Rulebook “The Speedball cone shall be made of a large 

pylon with the top cut down to a 5" diameter opening. The cone must be 

painted white with contrasting stripes top and bottom, and measure an 

overall height of 24" (see Appendix A).. “ 

This means that it uses a standard pylon ( you can google them under 

traffic pylon). A standard pylon is made of a plastic/rubber material that 

will not cut your hand and will give if hit by your hand. It may not be made 

out of anything other than that of a standard plastic/rubber pylon. The 

base is to be made of wood or a wood substitute product (like trex) and 

cannot be made of anything else. It should be made as to not have any 

sharp edges.

****ELECTIONS **** 

ELECTIONS FOR CGA BOARD OF 

DIRECTORS WILL BE HELD AT CONVENTION. 

The nomination period for the California Gymkhana Association's annual 

election of Officers and Directors ends 45 days prior to Convention. This year 

there are 4 Officer and 4 Director positions available. Officers/Directors are 

elected for a two year term. The newly elected Officers/Directors will take 

office at Convention 2011. 

Due to this deadline it is imperative that all nominations for Directors be 

received in the CGA Office in time to be published in the October and November 

issues of the World of Gymkhana. The deadline for publication in the 

October issue is September 10, 2011 and the November issue is October 10, 

2011. 

This is so those members of CGA who may not have a personal knowledge of 

each candidate will have some way of making a decision about who to vote 

for. All members are encouraged to contact any candidate and learn as much 

as possible about all the candidates prior to the election. Ballots will be mailed 

to all CGA members in good standing over the age of 12 who register with the 

CGA State Office for an Absentee Ballot. All other Ballots will be available 

November 19, 2011 at Convention, at the Double Tree Hotel in Modesto, 

CA. 

The CGA Office will begin accepting nominations on August 21, 2011 and 

nominations will close on October 4, 2011. Any CGA member may nominate 

any qualified CGA member for any of the Officer/Director positions. Nominations 

must be dated and in writing, either regular mail, email or fax. The 

candidate must respond & agree to serve if elected. The nomination must be 

signed. Please submit a candidate's statement of 200 words or less indicating 

the qualifications, length of membership, reason for running for office and any 

other information that may help members decide to vote for the candidate. 

Candidates statements must be emailed. These statements will be included in 

the World of Gymkhana.

I would like to nominate Timmi Lemen for Board of Directors. I believe she would be 

a great fit for this position due to her hard work ethic and love for CGA. She 

continues to be more involved within CGA every year and only looks to improve it 

for the better.

My name is Timmi Lemen and I accept the nomination for Board of Directors. 

Having been involved in CGA since the 1970’s, I’m a huge fan of its friendly 

competition and camaraderie. Presently I’m an appointed Board of Director. I 

currently serve on Dist. 4’s board, and am past board and district delegate for 

District 7. I hope to be a fair and impartial voice for the members of CGA, and will 

stay current and involved. Please consider me when voting.

I would like to nominate Allyson Shiffrar for Board of Directors. 

Laura Rice 

My name is Allyson Shiffrar and I would like to accept the nomination for Board of 

Directors. I have been a riding member of CGA since 2006 for District 40, 14 and 

District 1. For the last two years i have served on the board as an elected president’s 

pick. In those two years I have learned a great deal of the workings behind the 

scene. I have also voted on some very serious issues. My knowledge of the rule 

book and what I thought was right for our club was not always on the majority side. 

I feel you have to hear both sides in order to make the fair and best decision, even if 

it is unpopular. I still have a lot to learn but will do everything I can to educate 

myself. In those two years I have attended all the meetings except one and that was 

because I had a very sick horse. Horses are a very big part of my life and that is the 

common bond for all of us. It is important to put people on the board that want make 

California Gymkhana Association stronger and safer for horse and rider. 

I am currently a part of District 40 and 14, running this year’s, one of two Jamborees. 

This is not an easy task but I have lots of members that are standing with me to 

make sure we have a successful show. I love challenges and look forward to 

building CGA’s membership. There are a lot of great people I have met and have 

become friends with. I love being a part of CGA from the north to the south and feel 

I can make good and fair decisions as one of the Board of Directors. 

Please vote for me, Allyson Shiffrar - Central Coast Riders 

I would like to nominate Makayla Babiy (formerly known as Makayla Foster) for 

Board of Director. She has been a member of CGA since 1995. Throughout this time 

her accomplishments are huge. She has made Hall of Fame 12 times, Supreme Rider 5 

times, and trained many AAA and AAA+ horses. She has attended numerous State 

Shows and has won more match races than I can count. 

Makayla is also a Judge and has recently taken over as Secretary of our District. Not 

only have I known and ridden with Makayla for over 15 years now, I now have had 

the pleasure to work very closely with her. I believe she not only has the ability and 

commitment to be an outstanding Board of Director, she also a positive attitude 

with fresh ideas to bring to the table. 

As a rider, judge and long standing member of CGA, Makayla will bring the balanced 

perspective that is needed to be a great Board of Director.

My name is Shelly Njirich and I have been a member of CGA for ten years. I would 

like to nominate Robert Frates in the upcoming election for Vice President. I have 

watch Robert the last two years as the current V.P., State Arena Manager & as a 

previous Board Member, Robert has proven to me he is qualified for the office of 

V.P. 

Robert comes to this job as a member of CGA for over 15 years. Also Robert has 

represented my Dist. 32 as President and Arena Manager for many years. I know 

Robert to be well rounded as a CGA member. He began his venture with CGA 

because of his family’s interest in the assoc., quickly becoming a Judge around 

2005 and is currently a Master Judge. Robert has always been available to our 

Dist. 32 celebrating many family holidays, birthdays etc. at our shows, which I 

believe shows a true commitment to CGA. 

You will not be disappointed with another two years of Robert Frates as your Vice

My name is Robert Frates and I have been the vice president of CGA for the last two 

years, a master judge for two years and a judge for longer than I can remember. I’ve 

serve on BOD, I was president of Dist. 32, I’ve been a arena director at state show 

for the last to years and I would like the opportunity to continue helping CGA grow. 

I believe at this time I can do just that by being your vp for the next two years. I 

would love some day to be the president of CGA, but I feel I need a little more time 

in office. This is why I will accept the nomination of vice president. Thank you and 

looking forward to seeing everyone at convention

Hi, my name is Margo Abatti and I nominate Sherri Dugger for State Treasurer. I 

have known Sherri for several years. She is the kind of person who is a perfectionist 

when it comes to numbers or anything else she does. She never procrastinates 

about anything. If you want it done and done right, know she is the one to ask. 

Sherri is a full charge bookkeeper with 20 yrs experience. She has her own business 

and a dozen clients. She works closely with her clients and there CPA’s. She can 

prepare and audit financial statements for her clients CPA’s. She would have no 

problem with the financials for CGA. Sherri has been a CGA member for 4 years. 

She just completed her judge’s test and will soon be a judge. When Sherri became a 

member of Dist.#14 she jumped right in and became involved with the board. She 

has good ideas and is not afraid to ask questions. Sherri would make a great 

addition to the board. 

Hi, my name is Sherri Dugger, and I would gladly accept the nomination for State 

Treasurer. I have been involved with CGA for the past 4 years. My daughter 

Shelby first started riding in District 40 where I helped out in the booth and in the 

arena as needed. Shelby and I then joined District 14 and I volunteered to be on the 

Board as the Scribe. We have attended State Show every year since we have been 

CGA members and enjoy it very much. 

As far as my background as a bookkeeper, I have worked as a bookkeeper for over 

20 years. I am currently self-employed and work very closely with several accountants 

in the Santa Maria area. I do my clients books through financial statements. I 

make year end journal entries and prepare financial statements, which are then given 

to the CPA’s for audit and tax preparation. I also prepare payroll and payroll reports, 

including quarterly tax reports and year end reports. I also prepare monthly 

treasurer’s reports for a couple of my clients who present them at their board 

meetings. 

I am honored that I was asked to except this nomination, and feel that I can be an 

asset to CGA as State Treasurer.

I would like to nominate Rick Long for CGA President. I feel he is a good asset to 

this organization, and would benefit CGA greatly. Rick has been actively involved 

with CGA since 2002. He has been President of Mojeska Mavericks, and is currently 

the Vice- President of Riverside County Mounted Mavericks. However, many of you 

may know him as the Concierge of our yearly State Championship Finals. Rick is 

always there to lend a helping hand- for riders, members, and arena crew. Rick 

realizes the personal commitment necessary to fulfill the office of President and I 

believe he would do a tremendous job as our CGA President.

I, Rick Long respectfully accept my nomination for CGA President. 

I am pleased to nominate Shannon Rahn for the office of CGA President. Without 

question, Shannon is well suited for the position with years of valuable CGA 

experience and dedication to the organization and its members. For those of you 

who may or may not know Shannon Rahn, here are five (5) reasons why she would 

be a valuable asset as your next President: 

1. Shannon has been a member of CGA for over 30 years, joining in the early 70’s 

when the organization began. This has given Shannon unsurpassed experience 

within CGA and a full understanding of the evolution of our organization and its 

members needs. 

2. Shannon is a RIDER, perhaps enough said! It has been years since CGA has 

elected a President who is an actual rider with first hand knowledge of what riders 

need at both the State and District levels. 

3. Shannon has been a CGA Judge since the early 90’s and a Master Judge since 

2004. She also served as the Master Judge Advisory Committee Chairperson from 

July 2008 – November 2010. Simply put, Shannon is dedicated to CGA and knows 

the rules. 

4.Shannon is extremely involved at the District level, currently serving as the 

Treasurer (4 years running) and District Delegate for District 7 and previously as 

the Vice President, District Delegate and Scribe for District 14. 

5.Shannon has multiple levels of experience at the State level. Serving on the CGA 

Board as an Appointed Director, Elected Director, Vice President, Northern Vice 

President, Queen and Court Liaison and Rules Chairperson. She also has 

dedicated many years to the State Show Management team, holding the position of 

Assistant State Show Manager for 4 years and Team Event Co-Chair for nearly 10 

years. 

As you can see, Shannon has the experience, knowledge, dedication and 

enthusiasm required to serve as CGA President. I believe Shannon can bring a 

fresh perspective to the organization, backed by a sincere desire to serve the 

membership and the organizations needs.

We also finally raffled off our one of a kind “Turn N’ Burn” quilt made by Sheila 

Galindo of Quilts by Sheila. The raffle box was almost full of tickets but the lucky 

winner was…..HALEY LUDEWIG!!!!!!!! She was very excited and according to her 

mom, she fell asleep with it that night! Thank you everyone who participated in this 

fundraiser. Maybe we can get Sheila to make us another horse quilt next year! 

Sunday night, Nathan Rowles was the DJ for dancing following a Tritip 

BBQ. Thanks to Phyllis for making the pasta. Dennis Cole thanks for getting the 

salad and awesome garlic bread and to Brenda Thurston who helped cook the 

bread! About 60 people stayed to eat dinner and talk about what a great time we 

had! Once again, we need to remember that we could not have had such a 

successful show without our generous sponsors, our volunteers or the riders! 

Bay Area Time Buster is excited to announce our next show series… Our Autumn 

Dash for Cash will be held Oct 8 & 9 and Nov 12. It will be a combined High Point 

series with CASH AWARDS of $150 for 1st & $75 to Reserve. Riders will need a 

minimum of 13 rides to qualify for high point over 3 days (not including setups). 

Our division will be: AAA+, AAA, AA, A, FC/ 13 over and FC/ 12 under.

Happy Halloween to all. Don’t miss our October 29 - Spook-tacular Halloween 

Show. This will be a day show, sign up at 8:00a.m. and ride at 9:15. Show Type 1 

events. Prizes and awards to all those in costume. You can wear your costume 

when you ride so long as it is CGA legal.. There were such imaginative and creative 

costumes last year from “Trailer Wreck” to Gladiators so lets see what you all come 

up with this year. My favorites were the Trailer Wreck and the Horse of a Different 

Color. Please bring treats as the little ones will be “trailer treating” going around to 

each trailer for goodies. 

Our August 6th show was a small show with 31 riders. It was a pretty warm 

afternoon but cooled off very nicely as the sun went down. Got to love those night 

shows with that great Delta Breeze. 

Welcome to our new riders: Becky Graham; on Baby Girl; Ashley Sturman on 

Fancy; and Tammy Weddle on Edna. Welcome back to some riders that we haven’t 

seen for a while. Vicki McDaniel on Raisen Up the Dust; Becky Carroll on Black 

Jack (boy - it’s really been a long time Becky); and Erin Godfrey on Kira . Hope you 

all had a great time and please come back and ride with us again. 

By now everyone knows that Vicki McDaniel had a bad fall and was taken to the 

hospital but she broke out and came to our Aug. 27 show to write times and tell us 

all that she doesn’t remember any of it!!! Vicki is home recuperating and we all 

expect her back in the saddle soon. 

Thank you to all our hard working volunteers. Announcers/Time Writers: Bob 

Scott, Victoria Scott, Charlie Moore, Margaret Grow, Kate Lallare, Priscilla McDaniel, 

Johnnie Fite, and Renee Birdsong. Judges for the night were: Amber Castle-Keane,

the gate we had Kenneth Johnson, Shirley Garrett, Vaucell O’Neil, and Josh 

Ochs. Setting up and taking down the obstacles and helping in the arena were: 

Vaucell O’Neil (he was everywhere and worked almost every event), Wayne Gerber, 

Bob Malley, Dianna Malley, Sherry Colewell, Jimmy Briggs, and Timi Lemen. Thank 

you all very much. A Special Thank You to District 4. Those folks never fail to pitch 

in and get the second arena running or help set up and take down the events. 

Helping out is a great way to get involved and - bonus - learn everyone’s name. It’s 

easy to do (at least that’s what we always tell everyone) and we even give you a 

Worker’s Coupon for each event you work worth a whole dollar. But, Bonus! - only 

these worker coupons are eligible for the Free Show drawing worth $35.50. The 

Workers Coupons are also worth a $1 on your next ride or at the snack bar if you 

don’t put it in the Free Show drawing. So jump in and work a couple of events. 

Who knows, you might win a free show or at least get a dollar off rides or at the 

snack bar. Rider Coupons are also worth a $1 off at the snack bar or for rides. 

District 5 has started a new awards program that seems to be very popular so far. 

We will give you a ribbon, and a “button/pin” for your placing and then just 

buttons/pins for the rest of the show which you can put on your ribbon. There are 

different colors of buttons/pins for each placing. 1st = Blue, 2nd = Red, 3rd = 

Yellow, 4th = Turquoise and 5th = Pink. We let Lead Liners choose whatever colors 

they want.

helped us run the show.

Our Saturday night, Aug. 27th show was our biggest of the new season with 56 

riders. It was hot and the Delta Breeze failed to cool us off. But with the later start 

times this year, we are past the worst of the heat and the sun is going down around 

7:30 now so it isn’t too bad. We really can’t complain since there weren’t any 100 

degree days in August at all.

Maragaret Grow, Jody Abel, and Bell Malley. We even give you a Worker’s Coupon 

for each event you work. Only these worker coupons are eligible for the Free Show 

drawing worth $35.50. The Workers Coupons are also worth a $1 on your next ride 

or at the snack bar if you don’t put it in the Free Show drawing. So jump in and 

work a couple of events.

and catch up on the gossip and what is happening at District 5.

REDWOOD RIDERS • BOULDER CREEK AREA

Wow! What a fun show our annual two-day August Silver Show was! Our high 

points were a silver buckle for High Point, a silver cuff bracelet to Reserve, and a 

silver concho to Third. Congratulations to all our winners! We had a pretty good 

turn-out at the Royal Oaks Arena, 36 riders on Saturday, and 33 on Sunday. In order 

to be eligible for the high point, the riders had to attend both days. 

We ran seven events on Saturday and seven on Sunday. There were some great 

rides and fun had by all. We had several new riders and lots of old friends participate. 

Thanks to all our helpers: arena crew, time-keepers, gate-keepers, and judges! 

Congratulations, Kristin, on passing your CGA Judges test! 

Our Run for Fun on Saturday was Red Light, Green Light. We had some tough 

judges out there calling riders back to the start line because their horse wouldnâ€t 

stay still. Sierra Scott came away the winner with Stormy’s awesome sliding stops 

and statue stillness! She received a pair of mini cordless clippers. The game 

continued until the last rider had reached the finish line. Congratulations to Morgan 

on finishing the game. Morgan received a prize for being the last one to finish: a 

bronc halter with the words “REDWOOD RIDERS” stamped on it! 

Later on Saturday, we held a Redwood Riders potluck. It was great to hang out with 

friends, enjoying the good food and especially those delicious desserts! Thanks to 

our Barbeque chefs for cooking the meat! Speaking of BBQ, next time you see 

Rebekah, ask her what happened to the BBQ she was supposed to bring and why 

she brought a brand new one instead..

Our Run for Fun on Sunday was Stomp the Egg! A timed event, the horse must get 

to the egg, marked with a chalk circle drawn around it, then stomp on it until it 

breaks and the judges tell the rider to go. So hilarious and very fun! The winner 

was the rider with the fastest time. Rachel was given a re-ride by the judge because 

she had “a bad egg. It was too hard.” It just wouldn’t break! I, (Rachel), laughed 

about it and said that I would take the re-ride for fun, but not take the prize if I won. 

By the time I took my re-ride, Sierra had the fastest time with 12 seconds on Jesse 

James. I broke the egg in 11 seconds. I told her that I would give her the prize. She 

and I went to pick it up and it was another pair of mini clippers. Sierra had just won 

the same thing the day before, so she let me keep the prize. 

Now, on the confusion of High Point awards! By the end of both days of the show, 

there had only been three AAA+ rides: 

Madison, with a first place, in Figure 8 Stake, giving her a total of 11 points in 

AAA+; Rachel, with a first in Poles 1, 11 points in AAA+; and Sierra, with a first in 

Keyhole, 11 points in AAA+; 

Redwood Riders gives out High Point to the highest award earned, not the highest 

division. Sometimes this confuses people. So I’ll try to explain: It was decided that 

the winner of the AAA+ High Point would be the rider with the most first places in 

AAA, since each had one first in AAA+. So, the winners for AAA+ and AAA 

ended up being: 

AAA+ high point: Rachel Crill, 11 points, 6 first places in AAA 

Reserve: Sierra Scott, 11 points, 1 first in AAA 

AAA High point: Madison Jeske, 89 points, 5 firsts 

Reserve: Tammy Pigao, 84 points, 1 first 

3rd Place: Kassidy Miller, 68 points, 1 first 

So, the logic of our final High Point placings for AAA+ and AAA: 

Sierra Scott would have earned either fifth place in AAA (67 points) or third in 

AAA+ (1 AAA first). 

Madison would have earned either second in AAA (89 points) or second in AAA+ 

(5 AAA firsts). 

Rachel would have earned first in AAA (121 points) or first in AAA+ (6 AAA firsts). 

So, to give the highest award earned, Rachel took the AAA+ buckle, bumping her 

out of the running for the AAA buckle. Madison moved up to first for the AAA 

buckle, bumping her out of the running for Reserve in AAA+. That moved Sierra up 

to Reserve in AAA+, with no third place concho awarded for AAA+ because there 

were no other AAA+ rides. 

Was that confusing? Yeah, I thought so, too. Fortunately, the rest of the divisions 

werent quite as confusing: 

AA High Point: Demelza Perez, 95 points 

Reserve: Bonnie Sullivan on Bugsy, 57 points 

3rd Place: Zach Egner, 55 points 

A High Point: Mindy Sullivan, 88 points 

Reserve: Brenda Tealer, 83 points 

3rd place: Morgan Crouch, 80 points 

FC 10 & Under High Point: Ayla Blackwolf, 100 points 

Reserve: Nina Harrison, 93 points 

3rd place: Bekah Bueno, 51 points 

Ayla and Tucker walked every event for both days. Because she always got FC 

times, and there were only three FC 10 and Under riders, she got FC points in every 

event. Both of the other riders rode faster and occasionally bumped into a higher 

division. I’m so glad you girls all had fun!

Princess. I would like to congratulate you on all of your accomplishments and would 

also like to say how proud you make us all!! 

I would like to begin by congratulating the following riders who won 1 st place buckles: 

Pryce Swenson/Dinky – 1 st Place FC 13 & Under in Hurry Scurry with a time of 27.341, 

Chandler Soojian/Kacey – 1 st Place AA 14 and Under in Poles I with a time of 13.436, 

Kelsey Morain/Hotrod – 1 st Place AAA 16 and Under in Big T with a time of 15.343 and 

Shelby Dugger/Holly – 1 st Place AAA 16 and Under in Speed Ball with a time of 7.423. 

I would also like to mention Audrianna Lemons who has ridden at our club a few times. 

Audrianna won a saddle and 8 buckles in the A-Pony division ridding Lola. Way to 

go girl!!!! I was glad to get to know you and your family at State Show. 

We also had some Match Racers! It started off with Kelsey Morain/Hotrod in Big T, 

we then had Shelby Dugger/Holly in Speed Ball, Single Stake and Keyhole, and we 

finished it off with Chris Pauly/Kiwi winning a buckle in Novice Match Races/Speed 

Barrels. Wow!!! 

Shelby Dugger and Kelsey Morain made up the team of Double Trouble for the Ribbon 

Race. They did a great job placing 4 th. Chris and Shelby Pauly also teamed up and did 

a fantastic job in team events. 

Overall everything went well and everyone seemed to have a good time. Remember, 

it takes a lot of hard work on the part of a lot of good people to make a show run so 

smoothly, so don’t forget to say thank you when you see a Board Member, Judge or 

Arena Helper wondering around at State. They are all volunteers just like each of us. 

Oh, I almost forgot to send out a big thank you to Wes Womble and Margo & Meghan 

Abatti for coming to help out with Figure 8 Flags on Monday! You really set a wonderful 

example of what commitment is all about!! 

Ok, moving on to the new 2011-2012 season. We had our first show on August 20 th 

at Railhead Arena and the ground was fabulous! Thanks to all of our hard working arena 

prep crew. You guys do such a wonderful job and all of the riders appreciate it. I would 

like to say thank you to all of the Judges, Announcers and Arena Helpers. Without 

all of you none of this would be possible! 

We had some division changes, with Kelsey Morain riding Hotrod and Michelle Rogell 

riding Ruby moving up to AAA and Chandler Soojian on Kacey moving up to AA. We 

also saw a new cute little pony named Lola being ridden by Rylee Morain. Congratulations 

to all of you and to anyone else I may have forgotten to mention. 

Last, but not least, I would like to remind everyone of a few upcoming events. We 

will be co-hosting Jamboree with District 40 this year at the Elks Event Center in 

Santa Maria on October 1 st & 2 nd . You can get more information within this 

newsletter about the specifics. Also, we will NOT be having our scheduled show 

on October 1 st so that everyone who wants to can participate in Jamboree. Our 

next show will be held on October 15 th at Paloma Creek. This is a day show and we 

will be running Set 1. We also have our Work Day on October 22 nd at Railhead 

Arena, so please come out and help to keep your arena in tip top shape!!!

I know it’s hard to believe that Winter is coming when the thermometer on the wall 

outside says 99 and your air conditioner is gulping electricity like a beached Koi, 

but before you know it you’ll be looking for your warm jacket and rain boots. 

District 27 had our first Board meeting on Sept 7 to plan for our 2011/2012 season. 

Lots of decisions were made but the most exciting was, “Let’s do it again!” 

SADDLES, SADDLES, SADDLES! District 27 will again offer beautiful, semicustom 

saddles to the year-end High Point winners in all 7 divisions. There will be a 

couple of new rules which will make the races even more exciting so be sure to be 

there for all 11 District 27 shows beginning on October 22 and ending on April 28 in 

the Spring. 

If you have never attended a show at District 27 you should give it a try. The Year- 

End Saddles are wonderful but our Hi Point and Reserve awards are exciting every 

single show. We run a NO MYSTERY Jackpot with great pay outs and the final 

three shows of the season we will again be offering beautiful Gist Silversmith 

buckles to the winners and runners up in our Castle Country Challenge. Not only 

that but we are a friendly, family oriented group and everyone is there to have fun. 

Our ground is excellent and the roof keeps the rain out (mostly) and we have a super 

group of board members who work hard to see it all runs smoothly. Check out our

a facebook page. I’d tell you all about it but up to now I haven’t figured out how to 

do anything on Facebook except get emails. Anyone give lessons to senior

great to see many of our friends and also many new friends that came to join us at 

our show!

Road, Phelan. It will be a “Day” Show. Sign-Ups @ 8:00 A.M. and Ride @ 9:00 A.M.

WOW!!! How can I thank you all for coming to our first show of the season 

August 29, 2011. We had put the word out we needed to get our numbers up or we 

were in trouble of being able to continue. All last year our average was around 20 

riders. With all of your support we had 50 riders at our first show. So now I can 

say Dist 32 is once again ridin strong. Our next shows for the season are Sept. 25, 

Oct. 30, Dec. 4 with more to follow. Once again we could count on everyone to help 

out at our shows so once we figured out the computer glitch things ran smooth. I 

do need you all to do a better job of picking up your manure. Teresa and I had a 

big mess to pick up after the show. I also want to remind everyone to sign up for 

club year end awards. We will announce it at our shows. The cost is $35.00 and

DISTRICT 40 - SANTA MARIA AREA 

CENTRAL COAST RIDERS

Our first show of the new season was very small. We had 7 riders who were brave 

enough to withstand the amazing thunder and lightning display. There were a 

couple of times I thought the lightning might actually touch down it was so close. 

The thunder was so loud the ground actually shook as did the announcer’s booth. 

Amazingly enough, no horses were spooked, although some of the riders were. 

We attributed the small show due to the weather, two rodeos in the area that 

Sierrah and Carissa were attending, and District 14 was also running. We don’t like 

to conflict with our sister district but that was the only date we had available. In 

any event, fun and excitement was had by all and we were able to wrap it up by 

11:00. 

We would like to welcome two new riders: Savannah Knight riding Lucky Charm 

and Mike Mac Dowell on Gasket. Savannah did take a fall in speed barrels when 

Lucky Charm made a sharp turn around the end barrel sending her to the ground. 

She was able to pick herself up with no tears and finish the course. Way to cowgirl 

up Savannah! Thanks to Chris Rowles who was kind enough to judge the entire 

show. Wes Handy was off on a fire somewhere saving lives. Thanks to Ken Rice, 

Tom Shiffrar, & Jeff Williams who worked the entire show in the arena and Lena 

Williams on the gate. Thanks to Laura Ledesma who we unofficially voted the 

“Head of the Mac & Cheese,” for helping in the booth and doing awards in Janice 

Rowles’ absence. Janice was off to the rodeo. We see where your true 

commitments are. When Nicole Mitchell is around, we all get kicked to the curb. 

Ha Ha!! If you can’t have a little fun with the people in CGA, what is the point? 

Lexie Segura entertained us with her little paint colt “Goose.” OMG what a cute 

little thing. He is so friendly and tame. She can get him to bow and lay down. 

Amazing! 

District 40 would like to congratulate all of our riders who rode at District 1’s Aloha 

Days. This is an amazing show that Dist. 1 has put on for many years. The awards 

were saddles for high-point and buckles for reserve. The atmosphere was amazing. 

If you have never gone, mark your calendars for next year. Congratulations to: 

Sierrah Madrigal AAA+ high-point and Kayla Chavez fourth. AAA high-point to 

Nathan Rowles Winning his first saddle, Res to Allyson Shiffrar, and third to Renee 

Ledesma. AA Nicole Duran placed third. A high-point went to Tom Shiffrar who 

also won his first saddle. I guess we can’t call him “Sandbagger” anymore. Fifth 

went to Allyson on her little Pony Rosy. 

District 40 and District 14 will be hosting Jamboree Sept 30 th -Oct 2 nd . You can get 

your entry forms online at the CGA website. Pre entries are appreciated. We will be 

playing tennis baseball so be sure and bring your bats and mitts. We will also be 

holding a reverse drawing where the winner can will $2,000 or you may opt to split 

the pot with the last five remaining tickets if they all want to split. The price of the 

tickets is $25.00 which includes a Santa Maria Style BBQ for Saturday night. We 

have tickets still available. You can purchase at Jamboree or by calling Laura rice 

at 805-710-7852. You do not need to be present to win but you must decide if you 

want to split the pot or not. There will be winners for the first ticket drawn 25 th 

ticket etc. Tickets for the bbq only will be available for $10.00. We will be having a 

silent auction and District 14 will be having a 50-50 drawing. Hope to see many of 

you there at the Santa Maria Elks/Unocal Event Center.

Hello from District 49! 

Our first 2011-2012 season at Camelot is off to a great start! At our August 27th 

show we had a great group of 26 riders. Thanks for toughing out the hot weather to 

come ride with us! With all our helpers we had a very smooth show and we were 

able to be done by 2. Camelot has been striving to improve our ground and thanks 

to that the ground has been awesome! 

It was great to see Ana and Steve Gilbert back in the saddle again. We would also 

like to welcome back Jade Livingston, Margie Wilson, and Sasha Simpson-Stiles. 

Also joining us again was Judy Orlando, you have been missed! Glad to have you

Family Team Award 

CGA is a Family organization and in recognition of the many families 

that ride together in CGA we offer a Family Team Award available to all 

riders regardless of ability. 

The Family Team Award is 60 days retroactive from the date of the 

postmarked application or the show date if applicable. The $120.00 fee per 

rider includes the Year End Award Level 1, Silver Buckle, Silver Breast 

Collar Set. For an additional $20 the applicant can include both Level 1 & 2 

Year End Awards. 

The Family Team Award is a Special Jacket for each team member 

embroidered with the riders first name and rating division on the front. The 

back of the jacket will have a barrel racer figure (male or female) and the last 

name of the "family" above the words "Family Team Member". All jackets 

within a "family" must use the same last name. Teams may consist of 

parents, children, grandchildren, cousins, aunts, uncles, or any other relatives 

so long as the last name is the same. 

All riders on a "team" must earn at least a FC rating in order to qualify 

for the jacket. That means that all the riders on the team must complete at 

least 3 good rides in at least 4 events to qualify for the Family Team award. 

Each team member's jacket will reflect their own rating level and each 

member will receive their own rating level for the year end award that is 

included in the $120.00 fee. 

This is a great way for the entire family to participate and work 

towards an award that they can wear with pride. 

Sign up today so that your family doesn't lose any rides. This is a fun 

award to earn and a great way to enjoy gymkhana with your family.

As of the publication of this issue of the paper the following shows have not 

been posted in the State Office either because they have not been received or 

because of missing or insufficient information in the show packet.

Shows must be mailed to the State Office no later than one week after the Show Date. 

Riders, if you have times in these shows or you have memberships or awards 

applications in these show packets you will need to talk to the District Leaders 

about sending in their packets. 

Please get a receipt for any membership or award that is paid for in cash 

Senior Elite Awards Program 

The Senior Elite (SE) awards program is a modified version of the ROC 

program designed to provide competition and awards for the fastest and 

most accurate senior riders within the CGA (those 45 and older as of Jan 

1st of the current show season). To be eligible for this program, the rider 

must provide proof of age, and the horse/rider combination cannot be 

signed up for the ROC program in the same show season. This program is 

for horses only (no pony divisions). 

The ultimate achievement for an SE rider is to ride to the Senior Elite Hall 

of Fame. Any SE rider who during the show season becomes AAA+ rated 

in ten (10) of the thirteen (13) events using the SE Matrix will be entered 

into the CGA Senior Elite Hall of Fame. They will receive a special Senior 

Elite Hall of Fame buckle and a framed picture at the CGA Annual 

convention. In the event the rider does not earn a Senior Elite Hall of 

Fame buckle, the rider will be eligible for the Level 1 Award using the 

normal Rating Matrix. If the rider does not also receive an Senior Elite 

Champion or Reserve Champion jacket, they have the option of receiving 

a Senior Elite Hall of Fame jacket instead of the Hall of Fame buckle. 

Senior Elite Champion In Each Event 

The riders with the 1st and 2nd best average times in the event are the SE 

Champion and SE Reserve Champion, respectively. SE Champions and 

Reserve Champions will receive an SE jacket listing each event in which 

they are Champion or Reserve Champion. 

Senior Elite Top Five Riders 

The CGA’s Senior Elite Top Five Riders will be determined by the 

following method: the rider’s fastest 3 rides in each event are averaged. 

The 5 riders in each event with the fastest average will be given points as 

follows: 

1st - 11 points 2nd - 9 points 3rd - 8 points 

4th - 7 points 5th - 6 points 

Points from all thirteen (13) events will be added together, and the Five 

riders with the most points will become a member of CGA’s Senior Elite 

Top Five. Any ties will be broken by determining which rider has won the 

most first places. If the tie still exists, the rider with the most second places 

is selected. This process is continued, if necessary, to the place required to 

break the tie. Senior Elite Top Five Riders must have a SE rating of at 

least AAA using the normal Rating Matrix. They will receive a special 

Senior Elite Top Five buckle. 

Registration and Fees 

The SE registration fee is $120.00, which includes the Level 1 award. A 

Senior Elite rider that enters Senior Elite Hall of Fame will receive the Hall 

of Fame award, but not the Level 1 award. A Senior Elite Rider that does 

not enter Senior Elite Hall of Fame will receive the Level 1 award. 

Senior Elite riders may sign up for Level 1 and Level 2 awards for a fee 

of $140.00. A Senior Elite rider that enters Senior Elite Hall of Fame will 

receive the Hall of Fame awards and the Level 2 award. A Senior Elite 

rider that does not enter Senior Elite Hall of Fame will receive both the 

Level 1 award and the Level 2 award. Fees are not refundable.

CGA Annual Awards Banquet and Convention will be at the Double Tree Hotel in Modesto 

This year CGA will be hosting the annual awards banquet at the Double Tree Hotel in Modesto, CA. The 

room rate will be $89.00 per night for a standard King or Double. As in the past you must make your room 

reservations before Tuesday November 1, 2011 in order to get the special rates. Please make your reservations 

as early as possible. Check in time is 3:00pm and check out is 12:00pm. Call the Double Tree direct @

Dinner Reservations Must Be Postmarked

Dinner tickets must be picked up when you check in at 

Convention 2011 in Modesto 

Seats will be assigned on a first come, best seat basis. No seats will be assigned without a completed dinner 

reservation form, names and full payment. 

Seating is at tables in rounds of 10. You may not reserve a table without 10 dinner reservations and 

names. This is so we can seat as many as possible. If you want a group or district table, your reservation 

must include all the names and all the money . It will be assumed that a reservation is complete and any 

empty seats at your table will be assigned to others. We cannot "hold" places at tables without payment. 

Those seated at the head table (Hall of Fame, etc.) must pay for a dinner if they want to eat. No seat will be reserved 

on the floor for diners at the head table. No seats will be reserved without payment for a dinner. 

Please make your dinner reservations as 

early as possible so we can have an accurate 

count for catering. 

Please note that the dinner reservations

The Double Tree Hotel will honor the 

$89.00 rate as long as there are still rooms 

available in the CGA block prior to the

coffee pot in every room. 

Friday evening there will be a “Welcome 

Night” hosted by CGA with games and

awards on Saturday evening. 

Dinner seating is limited to 300 and is on a 

first come first served basis so get your 

reservations in early. 

Anyone who wishes to go up on stage and 

receive their award but doesn't want to 

eat dinner must check in with the CGA 

Office no later than 2:00 P.M. on Saturday 

the 19th. There is quite a bit of staging to 

coordinate all the awards and we must 

know ahead of time that you will want to 

be called up to receive your award.

Explanation of 5-D Jackpots 

For All CGA State Sponsored Shows 

Note: District’s may alter all the Jackpot options as they choose for local shows running jackpots or 

Mystery jackpots 

Riders may optionally enter a jackpot for any or all of the regular events. The cost is an additional $5.00 

per event, and a rider may choose to enter the Jackpot for none, some, or all of the regular events. These 

jackpots are unrelated to the rider’s division or age, and whether or not they are riding a horse or a pony. 

They are based strictly on the time the rider achieves in that event. Only the times of the Riders entering 

the Jackpots count. The size of the payout is determined by the number of riders in the jackpot. The 

Payout is: 

Fastest ride - 40 % of the jackpot 

2-D ride - 30 % of the jackpot 




CGA - None. All jackpot money is paid back to the riders. 

2-D, 3-D, 4-D and 5-D rides are those that come the closest (without going faster) to the fastest time 

of those entering the jackpot +(plus) the adjustment factor for that event. The adjustment factors are 

listed below.

For example, if the fastest ride in Poles I was 10.990 seconds, and the jackpot was $400.00, then that 

rider would receive $160.00. The rider closest to the 2-D time of 12.524 (10.990 + 1.534) without 

going faster would receive $120.00. The rider closest to the 3-D time of 14.057 (10.990 + 3.067) 

without going faster would receive $40.00. The rider closest to the 4-D time of 15.591 (10.990 + 

4.601) without going faster would receive $40.00. The rider closest to the 5-D time of 17.125 (10.990 

+ 6.135) without going faster would receive $40.00.
