Add all your State Championship Finals rides 

before July 6, 2012 

Avoid the $5 Add-on penalty by adding all the events you intend to ride before July 

6, 2012. There will be no penalty for Team Events or adding Jackpots at the show. 

Also, remember there are no post entries. If your entry isn't postmarked by July 6, 

2012 you cannot ride in the State Championship Finals. 

State Show Early Arrival Information 

Important - Please read 

The CGA Office will NOT mail early arrival permits for camping and stalls to those 

that have paid for them. You will pick them up at the gate when you arrive. Bolado 

Park will not allow anyone onto the grass before July 24, 2012. If you are planning 

to arrive before July 23 rd you will need to stay in the upper parking lot until July 23, 

2012. The gates will be closed each evening at 5:00PM and will not be opened until 

8:00AM. Please plan your travel time to arrive during normal park hours. CGA 

doesn't have the facilities officially until Friday morning, July 27th and we cannot 

make arrangements to have the gates remain unlocked prior to that date. Please 

make sure that you plan to arrive at the park during normal hours so you will be able 

to unload your horses.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 

Hello CGA 

Have heard from many that both Northern and Southern Spring Classics 

went extremely well and many had a great time. What a great season we 

have had so far. 

Through the years of going to State Show I have acquired some tips on 

“being prepared”. Here are just a couple of tips for your journey and stay 

at the show... Some members have had their shoer make extra set of 

shoes to bring in case they need a replacement during the show, extra 

Chicago screws, and double check your tack before you pack. 

Also, one year I learned a personal but painful valuable lesson, bring 

sunscreen! 

I am looking forward to seeing you at the show. Will have a great time 

with all the activities; events, match races, team events, volley ball games, 

kids events, barbecue, etc.

RATING FOR STATE SHOW 

In order to compete at State Show 2012 all riders must be 

rated no later than July 6, 2012. They must be either rated a 

minimum of Future Champion or have ridden a minimum of 

15 events during the show season. The 15 events can be 

combined on more than one mount.

WILL BE $100.00 PER SPOT ON VENDOR ROW AND $10.00 

PER VENDOR FOR SELLING FROM YOUR CAMP. TO RE- 

SERVE A SPOT ON VENDOR ROW SEND PAYMENT WITH 

YOUR REQUEST TO CGA STATE OFFICE.

CGA is actively looking for sponsors for the 2012 State Final Match 

Races. The sponsor fee is $150.00. Sponsorship monies can come 

from a District, an Individual or a Business. There are 13 events. The 

event sponsored will be awarded on a first come first serve basis. The 

$150.00 fee covers the cash award to the Match Race Champion and 

the Belt buckle. If you or someone you know would be willing to 

sponsor please contact the CGA State office by calling 

(831) 623-9026. 

The sponsorship fees may be tax deductible as an advertising 

expense, however CGA recommends that you consult your local tax 

person.

Corner 

"The Judge’s Corner" has appeared in this paper with a varying degree of regularity 

since 1991. CGA Judges, Members and Work Crew are invited to submit difficult calls 

or unusual questions that occur so that others can learn from their experiences. The 

best ones (unusual or just plain odd) will be printed here. 

If you have input for this column, please send your question to the CGA State Office. 

Your question will be answered by a Master Judge and the Rules Chairman. If there 

is any disagreement, it will be submitted to the Rules Committee and MAC for final 

resolution. 

If anyone has questions concerning this ruling you may contact the Rules Chairman,

ATTENTION RIDERS & MEMBERS 

As of the publication of this issue of the paper the following shows have not 

been posted in the State Office either because they have not been received or 

because of missing or insufficient information in the show packet.

Shows must be mailed to the State Office no later than one week after the Show Date. 

Riders, if you have times in these shows or you have memberships or awards 

applications in these show packets you will need to talk to the District 

Leaders about sending in their packets. 

Please get a receipt for any membership or award that is paid for in

FOR SALE

Family Team Award 

CGA is a Family organization and in recognition of the many families 

that ride together in CGA we offer a Family Team Award available to all 

riders regardless of ability. 

The Family Team Award is 60 days retroactive from the date of the 

postmarked application or the show date if applicable. The $120.00 fee per 

rider includes the Year End Award Level 1, Silver Buckle, Silver Breast 

Collar Set. For an additional $20 the applicant can include both Level 1 & 2 

Year End Awards. 

The Family Team Award is a Special Jacket for each team member 

embroidered with the riders first name and rating division on the front. The 

back of the jacket will have a barrel racer figure (male or female) and the last 

name of the "family" above the words "Family Team Member". All jackets 

within a "family" must use the same last name. Teams may consist of 

parents, children, grandchildren, cousins, aunts, uncles, or any other relatives 

so long as the last name is the same. 

All riders on a "team" must earn at least a FC rating in order to qualify 

for the jacket. That means that all the riders on the team must complete at 

least 3 good rides in at least 4 events to qualify for the Family Team award. 

Each team member's jacket will reflect their own rating level and each 

member will receive their own rating level for the year end award that is 

included in the $120.00 fee. 

This is a great way for the entire family to participate and work 

towards an award that they can wear with pride. 

Sign up today so that your family doesn't lose any rides. This is a fun 

award to earn and a great way to enjoy gymkhana with your family.

Spring Classic 2012 

Spring Classic 2012, held at Krogh Family Ranch in Warner Springs, went very well. Big thanks 

to our 70 plus riders that came out to enjoy the competition over Memorial Day Weekend. 

Spring Classic, as always, is a nice way for so many districts to come together and ride. We had 

riders come from Norco, Apple Valley, Big Bear, and the High Desert, as well as our own District 

33 riders. 

Congratulations go out to Avielle Lehman for completing her last Hall of Fame ride over the 

weekend, with special thanks to Bob Krogh for the best celebratory mud pit ever! 

We also would like to congratulate Shalie Xanthos for completing her judging requirements and 

receiving her judges’ card and judging her first show as a carded judge. 

As always, we have to give thanks to our volunteers that judged, worked the arena, and worked 

the announcer’s booth, the show can’t go on without you!

Thank you riders, and especially all the Moms who came out to participate in our 

May 12 and 13 shows! We decided to give our “Saturday only” riders a chance to 

practice the other 6 CGA events and ran set 2. We even switched up the order so 

that everyone can be in tip top form for state finals, which are rapidly approaching! 

San Juan Bautista decided to keep us nice and cool all day, first with fog, then with 

wind! Oh well, it was better then 100 degree heat! Janice Rowels and her riders 

where happy that it was “just like home” and said they couldn’t wait to ride. 

Speaking of the Rowels...Christopher Rowels, our CGA Vice President made the trip 

this weekend and it was great to see him. Thanks for all the help and for representing 

the Board of Directors. Rick, Susan and Jessica Townsend made the LONG trip 

to (5 hours) so that Jess could ride Poco. She must be doing something right, that 

horse is on fire!!!! Thank you for helping all day too! We were also glad to welcome 

back Brandi Mount on her new horse Boon. Happy you’re back in the saddle 

Brandi! Madison Jeske also made her debut on Sir Lance A Luke; Madi’s horse, 

Alibi, was injured last fall and we are so happy that you and Luke found each other 

(now Alibi has a boyfriend too!). 

Our high point and reserve for Saturday was Tractor Supply Gift Cards. Something 

we all can use!

show that no matter how many times you earn this honor, it’s still an amazing 

accomplishment!

Sunday morning was once again cool but the riders (and their Moms) still came out 

to ride. Who wouldn’t want to spend their Mother’s Day at a Gymkhana?!?!? 

Chrissy Looney thought so and she let her mom, Liz, ride her horse Ozzie all day. 

Jennifer Galindo-Cole offered Rio (Senior Don Julio) for Chrissy to ride so she and 

her mom could ride together. They had a blast. Liz had a smile from ear to ear after 

each ride! Bekah Bueno and Dotty came to ride on Sunday too. They were very 

happy that we were running Set 1 since they can only make it on Sundays due to 

Bekah playing softball. 

Our high point for Sunday were beautiful flowers that the riders could give to their 

Moms, since it was Mother’s Day after all! Thank you Tiffany Martin for getting 

those for us.

Just a reminder....BATB will once again be riding in the San Benito County Saddle 

Horse Parade on June 21st. We would like to encourage as many members as 

possible to ride and give them an opportunity to purchase a custom shirt to wear in 

the parade. It will be a teal shirt with graphics on the back; it can also be worn for 

Grand Entry during State Finals. Please check out our website at

parade is June 1st (Guaranteed delivery by June 20th) but you can order a shirt for 

grand entry up until July. 

Our last show for the season will be July 14 Set 2 on Saturday. We will offer set ups 

after the regular show to every rider. Odom’s arena. Sign up at 8, ride at 9. Until then, 

ride hard, but wear your helmets! 

Happy Fourth of July and Happy Birthday to the good ol’ USA!!! Our July 6th 

Friday night show is a Red/White/Blue theme and anyone wearing the “colors” or 

decorating their horse patriotically will receive a free raffle ticket for one of Donna’s 

great raffle prizes. We’ve had a raffle almost every show and there have been some 

great prizes. Donna & Vicki went “shopping” at the Horse Expo so there are bound 

to be some really good raffle prizes coming up. Even if you don’t ride, you can buy 

raffle tickets and maybe win!!! 

Don’t miss out on the Late Night Riders Year End Awards program. The Year End 

Awards application is available at the www.latenightriders.org website. Click on Year 

End Awards in the left side frame. Just print it, fill it out and make sure to get it 

postmarked no later than July 22. You must be a Late Night Riders Member in good 

standing and have ridden in at least 3 shows to be eligible for Late Night Riders Year 

End Awards. Forms are also available at the show sign up booth. 

Our May 19, show was the last “day” show. Starting with the June 2 show the Late 

Night Riders switched to “night” shows in anticipation of beating the heat for the 

rest of the summer. 

We only had 17 riders show up for our May 19 show so it was a really “fast” show. 

Amber Castle-Keane was riding and doing the computer. She barely had time to ride 

and then get back to the computer before she was being called again. We ran both 

sides of the arena and ran Amber last and first to allow her time to do the computer 

entry before she would be up again. It worked out and Amber did a great job on the 

computer and still managed to take Highpoint in 20+ division. It was pretty nice 

weather - not too hot at about 85 degrees - and a nice breeze blowing to keep the 

horses cool. The ground was in great shape. 

Welcome to our new riders: Tracey Langley on Smokey and Sara Yanowsky on 

Willy. They both seemed to have a good time and Sara even got a 1st in Barrels. 

Hope you both come back and ride with us again. 

As always we have to thank all our workers who made this show possible: Announcers/Time 

Writers: Dani Keukelaar, Victoria Scott, Jody Abel, Bob Scott, Judy 

Sharp, Charlie Moore and Darryl Flores. Judges for the day were: Charlie Moore, 

Jody Abel, and Judy Sharp. Gate Swingers for the day were: Shirley Garrett, 

LaDonna Hales, and Steve Shafer. Setting up and taking down the obstacles and 

helping out in the arena were: Jeff Thompson, Loretta Stevens, Isaiah Thompson, 

and LaDonna Hales. Thank you to all our workers. Most of the workers are also 

riders. With the show so small it was great to have so many helpers in the arena and 

running the show. 

We give every worker a Worker’s Coupon for each event they work. The coupons 

are worth a whole dollar for rides or at the snack bar. But, Extra-Bonus! - only these 

worker coupons are eligible for the Worker’s drawing. We have started a new 

program where instead of one or two riders winning a Free Show worth $35.50 we 

gave out 14 Free Ride Coupons. These Free Ride Coupons are worth up to a 

maximum of $4.50 for rides or $1 at the snack bar. So jump in and work a couple of 

events. Who knows, you might get a couple of Free Ride Coupons or at least get a 

dollar off rides or at the snack bar. Rider Coupons are also worth a $1 off at the 

snack bar or for rides but are NOT eligible for the Free Ride Drawing. 

Our Ribbon/Coupon Captain was Charlie Moore and Donna Schenk handled the 

High Point awards. Thank you to all who worked and helped us run the show. 

The Mystery Jackpot was Fig. 8 Stake and the pot was a very respectable $45.00 for 

only 17 riders in the show. This was one of those rare shows where the pot was too 

small for riders in the 3, 4 & 5 D to get their money back. But they almost did!!!!

2D - Teresa Barosso on Worlds Dream Girl won $13.50 with a time of 12.759 

3D - Andrea Brymer on Millie won $4.50 with a time of 13.667

The June second was our first night show and we had 45 riders show up to ride. 

This was the 3rd show in the Buckle Series. March third was the first Buckle Series 

show, May fifth was the second and June 2nd was the third. Our make up Buckle 

Series show to replace the rained out April 14th show will be June 30th. That will be 

the fourth show. July 7 will be the fifth and final show in our Buckle Series. The 

Buckles will be awarded at the Late Night Riders Year End Awards in October. Stay 

tuned. 

The ground was crusty on top and a little dusty but it was very good ground. Jade 

White on Peptos Blue Doc had a screaming fast Poles I run to set a new arena record 

with a Supreme time of 9.844. The old record in Poles I was held by Amanda Wilson 

on Odie with a 9.987. Anna Rose on Lil Brat had 4 AAA+ rides including a fantastic 

Speed Ball time of 7.342 and a 13.848 in Birangle. LaDonna Hales on Tuffy the Turbo 

had a great Birangle too with a AAA+ time of 13.813. Congratulations to all the 

riders. Our sympathy to Judy Sharp who threw a shoe on Seven in her very first run 

but Judy is such a great competitor and she stuck around to work the show for the

This year we are trying something new for our annual buckle series. Instead of only 

two days we are going to run the Buckle Series at the first Sat. show in each month 

from the March 3 show through the July 7th show. Points from those shows will 

count towards the Buckle Series. When a buckle show is rained out the next Sat. 

show will count. Since all the following Sat. shows were rained out in April we have 

designated June 30th as the April make-up show. 

For those of you that want to stay overnight at the arena there are some pens

Oops, I guess April was a while ago... Oh, well! Here’s the report for the Redwood 

Riders’ first and second shows of 2012. California Gymkhana Association’s District 

9 runs most of its shows at the Boulder Creek Stables off Bear Creek Road, just two 

miles out of town (formerly known as Eddy Ranch). April 29th was the beginning of 

what promises to be a stellar year for D9. We had a whopping 35 riders! We had to 

get a little creative with our parking lineup, especially since we now have to use the 

small turnout for a warmup arena instead of for parking. Everyone did a great job 

making space for all the trailers and cars! Welcome to all the new riders. So glad 

you came out to have fun with us! 

High Point was donated by Scotts Valley Feed. Thanks so much for the awesome 

saddle blankets and matching reins! Reserve was a silver concho. Our Raffle 

Queen, Kat Ray, prepared and pulled off a fantastic raffle, raising a nice chunk of 

change towards our Year End awards. Thanks to the Dreamor Ranch Foundation 

for providing our snack shack. It was great to have food and drink available 

between events. The day had a few minor hitches as the volunteers got used to 

running a show again. The ground was not prepared correctly, and there were a 

couple of scary moments for the faster riders, but no one was hurt. The mistake was 

noted and proper preparation will occur for all future shows. 

Our Run for Fun caused a lot of giggles: backwards Speed Barrels. Thanks, Bonnie. 

That was a great idea! You had to back your horse, weaving three barrels up and 

back. Fastest time went to Sue Landaiche, with 51.4 seconds! 

As always, thanks so much for all our great volunteers: judges, gatekeepers, arena 

helpers, booth workers, our board members and everyone who makes this club

This Memorial Day weekend show was a pretty big deal, with High Point being $250 

in dollar coins, and Reserve was $100. Third place Reserve was donated by a 

vendor at the show: blingy ball caps. The eight of us who went did very well and

Our May 20th show was almost as crowded, with 30 riders. The Boulder Creek 

arena was prepped well and the riders were excited for the Redwood Riders’ second 

show. At this show we had a tack swap and sale, with anyone invited to bring stuff 

they wanted to get rid of. Dreamor Ranch Foundation’s snack shack returned, as 

did our faithful volunteers! Couldn’t do this without help, so thanks everyone! It’s 

so fun to see all our friends, old and new, coming out and having a good time. 

Everyone is always yelling encouragement and cheering each other on. A big 

welcome back to Randy Barnard’s horse, Sparky! We’re so glad he’s all better! 

High Point was donated by Chris Rice, who made beautiful necklaces for us again. 

Reserve was a silver concho. Our Run for Fun was the semi-official event Ribbon 

Race. Thanks for setting it up, Bonnie. The winning team was Katie White and 

myself, Rachel Crill, with a smoking time of 10.471 seconds! Not bad, Katie! We

Cinnamon Rowles had a little filly on Sunday night. Hello Tootsie Rowles. She has 

marking that look like angle wings on her butt. Maybe they should name her Angle. 

Now for a little Arena dirt, 

Poor Leia had a tough time in the morning. First she took the wrong exit and then 

got a ticket for trying to turn around. That is some hard luck but she ended with a 

great show. We really appreciate you bringing 2 horses to ride. I hope you come 

back again. Then Sierrahs horse Bubba decided to take a run around the Elks fair 

grounds. It was funny watching Cass on the Cart, Kayla on Perot, and Jessica on 

Poco trying to track down our fastest horse In the club. They finally caught him 

with no one getting hurt. Then Seirrah had to run an event for which she still got a 

AAA+ time in. Man that horse is in shape.

For June we did not have a show because the Elks had their big rodeo. They were 

kind to let us do a CGA demonstration on Sunday prior to their performance. I have 

to give a BIG THANK YOU to those who helped us with it. We really had some fun. 

We ran 3 of the 13 events 2 hours prior to the Elks Rodeo. First we setup Hurry 

Scurry and then ran Speed barrels and Speed ball, match race style. Those two 

events got the crowd cheering. At the end we ran one example of rescue race 

pitching brother Chris Rowles against brother Mitchell Rowles, that got the crowd 

to their feet. I think it is still in dispute as to who won the race. We didn’t have 

timers setup so I don’t think we will ever know. The crowd said arena # 1. It was 

very close. 

By the time you are reading this, you will know that we cancelled our June 17 show. 

District 14 ran a night show on Saturday and I am pretty sure they did not want to 

get up at 5 or 6 am to drive to our show after being up until midnight. We cherish 

their support so we decided to let them sleep in. We moved that show to June 30th. 

There will be a second show on July 1st. These two show will be individual shows 

so if you can’t make it to one, I hope you can make it to the other. Don’t forget we 

provide dry camping if you would like to ride in both and stay Saturday night. There 

is just a $10.00 charge per horse and $ 10.00 per rig. That is cheaper than any hotel I 

know about. 

These two show will be our last shows for the season. Then on to getting our Year 

End awards. Usually we have our banquet in November. I will send those who 

qualified an invite once we get the awards in and set a date. During the awards 

banquet we like to pick new board members. If you are interested please ask anyone 

of us. The positions are, President, Vise-President, Secretary, treasurer, Scribe, 

Awards, Arena equipment, Booth Boss, and we always need new judges. As for the 

judges, all we have for our District is Chris Rowles and Wes Handy. Wes will be 

gone most the time fighting fires. Nathan is sooo close to getting his card; he has 

put in the time he just needs to take the test. Nathan, you got all of our support. I do 

want to thank those judges that come from other districts. We are lucky to get those 

volunteers and we really appreciate your help. 

Here is a tentative list of our next season show dates. We will still be at the Elks 

Arena. This ground has gotten better and better. If you see Cass please give her a 

pat on the back and say Thank You. She really works hard to get the ground perfect. 

Just look at our times. Multiple Supremes and AAA+, plus all the bump ups are 

worth mentioning. I do want to boast that Brittney Posy and Duke (NFR World 

Champions) ran a 17.24 on our ground. It was incredible to watch. Lynda Vick also 

ran a 17.3, and there were a bunch of runs under 17.5. These ladies ran the same size 

course CGA runs. That is fast. Maybe someday I can go that fast on my Rosy pony. 

Eh maybe not. 

June 30 th & July 1 st We will have a silent auction to help raise funds for Year-end 

awards. September 9 th Sunday will be our first show for the 2012-2013 season. 

We at district 40 want to thank all of you that supported our club this last year. I 

hope you all had fun and join again next season. Please spread the word our main 

goal is to have a safe and fun time. See you at the June 30th and July 1st to close 

out this season.

Senior Elite Awards Program 

The Senior Elite (SE) awards program is a modified version of the ROC 

program designed to provide competition and awards for the fastest and 

most accurate senior riders within the CGA (those 45 and older as of Jan 

1st of the current show season). To be eligible for this program, the rider 

must provide proof of age, and the horse/rider combination cannot be 

signed up for the ROC program in the same show season. This program is 

for horses only (no pony divisions). 

The ultimate achievement for an SE rider is to ride to the Senior Elite Hall 

of Fame. Any SE rider who during the show season becomes AAA+ rated 

in ten (10) of the thirteen (13) events using the SE Matrix will be entered 

into the CGA Senior Elite Hall of Fame. They will receive a special Senior 

Elite Hall of Fame buckle at the CGA Annual convention. In the event the 

rider does not earn a Senior Elite Hall of Fame buckle, the rider will be 

eligible for the Level 1 Award using the normal Rating Matrix. If the rider 

does not also receive an Senior Elite Champion or Reserve Champion 

jacket, they have the option of receiving a Senior Elite Hall of Fame jacket 

instead of the Hall of Fame buckle. 

Senior Elite Champion In Each Event 

The riders with the 1st and 2nd best average times in the event are the SE 

Champion and SE Reserve Champion, respectively. SE Champions and 

Reserve Champions will receive an SE jacket listing each event in which 

they are Champion or Reserve Champion. 

Senior Elite Top Ten Riders 

The CGA’s Senior Elite Top Ten Riders will be determined by the 

following method: the rider’s fastest 3 rides in each event are averaged. 

The 10 riders in each event with the fastest average will be given points as 

follows: 

1st - 11 points 2nd - 9 points 3rd - 8 points 4th - 7 points 

5th - 6 points 6th - 5 points 7th - 4 points 8th - 3 points 

9th - 2 points 10th - 1 point 

Points from all thirteen (13) events will be added together, and the Five 

riders with the most points will become a member of CGA’s Senior Elite 

Top Five. Any ties will be broken by determining which rider has won the 

most first places. If the tie still exists, the rider with the most second places 

is selected. This process is continued, if necessary, to the place required to 

break the tie. Senior Elite Top Five Riders must have a SE rating of at 

least AAA using the normal Rating Matrix. They will receive a special 

Senior Elite Top Five buckle. 

Registration and Fees 

The SE registration fee is $120.00, which includes the Level 1 award. A 

Senior Elite rider that enters Senior Elite Hall of Fame will receive the Hall 

of Fame award, but not the Level 1 award. A Senior Elite Rider that does 

not enter Senior Elite Hall of Fame will receive the Level 1 award. 

Senior Elite riders may sign up for Level 1 and Level 2 awards for a fee 

of $140.00. A Senior Elite rider that enters Senior Elite Hall of Fame will 

receive the Hall of Fame awards and the Level 2 award. A Senior Elite 

rider that does not enter Senior Elite Hall of Fame will receive both the 

Level 1 award and the Level 2 award. Fees are not refundable.

Riders may optionally enter a jackpot for any or all of the regular events. The cost is an additional $5.00 

per event, and a rider may choose to enter the Jackpot for none, some, or all of the regular events. These 

jackpots are unrelated to the rider’s division or age, and whether or not they are riding a horse or a pony. 

They are based strictly on the time the rider achieves in that event. Only the times of the Riders entering 

the Jackpots count. The size of the payout is determined by the number of riders in the jackpot. The
