As last year’s Christmas smash hit Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang continues on its UK tour, we’re preparing
for another fabulous coup this season with the UK
première of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom
The Musical. Leeds is the only place in the country you
can catch the show.
Our other major news is the appointment of architects
Page \ Park to lead the redesign of our building.
The project is about so much more than just bricks
and mortar – and Page \ Park really get this. We’re
extremely excited, and look forward to sharing our
ideas with you as they develop.

the birth of Charlotte Brontë. The Brontë sisters are
undoubted giants in world literature and our season

SEASON
The Brontës immediately conjure images of
wild Yorkshire moors and the cobbled streets
of Haworth. On the 200 year anniversary of
Charlotte Brontë’s birth, this season
celebrates and reimagines the extraordinary
stories they wrote, their cultural legacy and
their remarkable, yet tragic lives.
It’s not a time for living in the past
or in the future but living fully in the
present. We mark out our significant
moments with anniversaries.

The only two children born in a tiny North
Yorkshire village for a generation grow up and
fall in love. It’s a love that’s entwined in the light
on the landscape, the feasts and the festivals,
the birdsong and the blackthorn bushes of
home.
Charley Miles’ tender debut play explores the
tiny changes that pull us from the places and
people we love.
Charley is from Kilburn, North Yorkshire.
Blackthorn was written and developed with the
support of West Yorkshire Playhouse. It is the
first in a series of stripped back productions
of new plays by writers born, raised or living in
Yorkshire.

The recently widowed Iyalode, a young,
beautiful chief, longs to marry her low-born
lover, Oguntade. Her brothers vehemently
forbid it, but Iyalode secretly marries and
gives birth. If the brothers discover the
deceit, a trail of torture, torment, betrayal
and murder could follow.
A unique West African transposition of one
of the greatest dramas ever written,
John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi.
Utopia Theatre will run a symposium on
African Performance to accompany the

Furnace: Festival celebrates the wild, unpredictable process of making new
theatre - from the initial creative spark to the finished production.

and above all remembering. Mark Thomas recreates where it all began, a
red wooden shed in Wakefield, to celebrate the Labour Club’s 50th birthday.
The show will involve the audience (in a nice way) to recreate the shed and its
inhabitants. Part theatre, stand up, journalism, activism: it’s the story of the
battle for hope and the survival of a community in a small wooden shed.

When you’re the only reindeer with a bright red nose it’s difficult
to fit in, but even Rudolf has to go to school - Reindeer School.
It’s not just magical sleigh rides and all you can eat carrots;
it takes a lot of hard work to make the grade to pull Santa’s sleigh
especially when you’re the ‘red nose reject’.
But, with a little help from The Ugly Duckling, and a gentle

A 21st Century Playhouse
Phoenix Dance Theatre present
Mixed Programme 2017
Phoenix Dance Theatre return with their
latest programme of thrilling and dynamic
contemporary dance.
Douglas Thorpe’s Beast explores the
consequences of choice, followed by
Sandrine Monin’s debut work challenging
the poetic tensions between viciousness and
sensuality. And, finally, co-commissioned
with The Royal Ballet, Itzik Galili reworks his
powerful Until.With/Out.Enough.
Page \ Park Architects appointed to help
redevelop the Playhouse.
Have you heard about plans for a major redevelopment
of West Yorkshire Playhouse? Those plans have now
taken a major step forward with the appointment of
Glasgow-based Page \ Park Architects to create a
design which realises our ambitions.
Page \ Park have great experience in designing for the
arts, including three major cultural projects in Scotland:
The Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow, an
award-winning venue created from a cluster of existing
buildings, which has become one of the most popular
contemporary arts spaces to visit in the country.
The Theatre Royal, Glasgow
Tommy the Musical
The New Wolsey Theatre, in association with
Ramps on the Moon, presents Tommy the
Musical, based on the iconic 1969 rock concept
album by The Who.
With a cast of 20 performers and musicians, this
is the story of the pinball-playing boy which has
inspired and amazed audiences for more than
40 years.
A one-of-a-kind theatrical event.
The Theatre Royal, Glasgow, where a striking new
foyer has transformed the experience for visitors at
every level of the building.
The Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, which like the
Playhouse required a significant refurbishment
including relocation of the entrance to the other side of
the building.
The Playhouse project is about far more than just about
the bricks and mortar of the building, and Page \ Park’s
clear understanding of this makes them the obvious
choice to join us on this journey.
We will be sharing ideas and keeping you up to date on
our website throughout the course of this season.

Café & Bar
Our café is open throughout the day from Monday to Saturday - it’s
the perfect spot for breakfast or lunch, convenient for catching up
with friends or having a business meeting. We offer table service
in the café from 5pm, book via the website or box office. On
performance days, the main bar is open from 5pm. Beat the queues
and pre-order your interval drinks, which will be ready when you
come out of the auditorium. If you’re short on time, our coffee shop
is open before performances serving light bites.
Conferences & Events
As well as being a world-class theatre, the Playhouse is an
established conference, meeting and events venue. We can offer a
unique and tailored conference and hospitality packages for groups
of all sizes from family parties to corporate dinners before a show.

Building Tours
Take a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into putting our
productions on the stage and an insight into the history of West
Yorkshire Playhouse. Tours are held monthly check the website or
Box Office for dates and availability. Places are limited and booking
in advance is essential.
Costume Hire
Explore our vast array of costumes, let your imagination run
wild and create a unique outfit to impress. As well as catering
for individuals, our experienced team works with professional
organisations, amateur dramatic and education groups. Located
in our St. Peter’s Square building, for more information please visit

West Yorkshire Playhouse is on Quarry Hill,
opposite the bus station in the centre of Leeds.
Box Office
You can call the box office from 9am to 6pm, Monday to
Saturday for telephone sales and enquiries. The box office
counter will remain open until 15 minutes after the start of
any evening performances for ticket collection, sales and
enquiries. Discounts apply to senior citizens (65+ and retired),
students and children under 18 in full-time education,
Leeds Card Holders and anyone receiving disability or
unemployment benefits. Discounted tickets are subject to
availability and only one discount is applicable per ticket.
We have a £1.75 transaction fee for each booking, not each
ticket. This fee applies to all phone and internet sales, but
not face-to-face bookings.
Getting there
By Car
Quarry Hill car park is right next to the Playhouse. Blue Badge
Holders can park in the car park for free. Disabled parking is
also available on Playhouse Square, directly outside the main
entrance. These car parks are operated by Leeds City Council
and parking is only £2 after 6pm.
We also offer discounted parking at the nearby Leeds The
Markets – NCP on New York Street. To obtain your discount you
need to ask for a voucher at the box office. The postcode for your
Satnav is LS2 7EA. Please note that this car park closes at 11pm.
By Train
Leeds City Station is approximately a 20-minute walk away. For
train times and travel updates call National Rail Enquiries on
08457 484950 or search the website www.nationalrail.co.uk
By Bus
The Playhouse is located opposite the bus and National
Express coach stations. For local bus and train times, call the
METROLINE information service on 0113 245 7676.
