This letter w<strong>as</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercepted by <strong>the</strong> British Special Branch. <strong>The</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern Documents did not<br />

clearly <strong>in</strong>dicate whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> letter came from <strong>the</strong> ES or FEB. None<strong>the</strong>less, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malayan</strong><br />

Comb<strong>in</strong>ed Intelligence Summary, C.F. Yong <strong>in</strong>terpreted it <strong>as</strong> a FEB directive urg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> MCP to<br />

“mobilize <strong>the</strong> broad m<strong>as</strong>ses aga<strong>in</strong>st imperialist war”, and “prepare and lead strikes and sabotage<br />

activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore Naval B<strong>as</strong>e”. 31 But, C. F. Yong did not refer to <strong>the</strong> portions of <strong>the</strong> letter<br />

5. Anti-Imperialist League (AIL)<br />

A Russian-language document, “Biographical <strong>in</strong>formation and evaluation of <strong>the</strong> leadership of <strong>the</strong><br />

MCP – Prepared by reviewers of <strong>the</strong> EC”, quoted above, stated that <strong>the</strong> AIL w<strong>as</strong> formed at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>itiative of <strong>the</strong> MCP <strong>in</strong> 1934. This document w<strong>as</strong> written <strong>in</strong> February 1942. Actually, <strong>the</strong> AIL w<strong>as</strong><br />

formed <strong>in</strong> 1932 but <strong>in</strong> 1946 it w<strong>as</strong> severely accused of be<strong>in</strong>g traitors by <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n ma<strong>in</strong>stream faction<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong>. 32 <strong>The</strong> error <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> document suggests that <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern did not have detailed<br />

knowledge of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malayan</strong> AIL and its evaluation by <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream faction.<br />

6. Komsomol of Thailand<br />

In October 1934, <strong>the</strong> Siam <strong>Communist</strong> <strong>Party</strong> dispatched a member of <strong>the</strong> Komsomol (CYL) to<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>in</strong> order to <strong>in</strong>spect <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong> MCP. But <strong>as</strong> he w<strong>as</strong> prohibited from disembark<strong>in</strong>g, he<br />

returned to Siam. 33<br />

7. Shanghai Municipal Police <strong>Files</strong><br />

This file 34 conta<strong>in</strong>s three letters sent from <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong> MCP. <strong>The</strong>se were <strong>in</strong>tercepted, deciphered<br />

and translated <strong>in</strong>to English by <strong>the</strong> SB, one w<strong>as</strong> that of S<strong>in</strong>gapore, and o<strong>the</strong>r two that of SMP.<br />

(1) Letter from Kok Kong ( 国 光 ) to <strong>the</strong> FEB, c/o Kok Bun ( 国 文 ) dated 15 August 1934. This<br />

w<strong>as</strong> stopped at S<strong>in</strong>gapore and translated on 25 August 1934. Straits Settlements SB noted,<br />

“written <strong>in</strong> (orig<strong>in</strong>al language) <strong>in</strong> Number Code”. British Consul-General considered this<br />

w<strong>as</strong> most possibly addressed to Li Su Kong ( 李 树 光 ).<br />
