A renowned Ch<strong>in</strong>ese novelist, Ma N<strong>in</strong>g ( 马 宁 ), who had stayed <strong>in</strong> Malaya <strong>in</strong> this period <strong>as</strong> an MCP<br />

and AIL cadre, recollected <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>terview with <strong>the</strong> present author <strong>in</strong> Fuzhou <strong>in</strong> August 1991 that:<br />

<strong>The</strong> leader of <strong>the</strong> AIL ( 反 帝 大 同 盟 ) w<strong>as</strong> Wu Zhi Hao ( 邬 志 豪 @ Boo Chih-fu 邬 炽 夫 ), <strong>the</strong><br />

propaganda head of <strong>the</strong> MCP. After Wu w<strong>as</strong> buried alive <strong>as</strong> a dissident by <strong>the</strong> CC, Lim Choon<br />

Kwong (L<strong>in</strong> Chun Guang, 林 春 光 ) succeeded <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> propaganda head. Lim w<strong>as</strong> a secondary school<br />

student at that time. As his fa<strong>the</strong>r w<strong>as</strong> a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese member of <strong>the</strong> Straits Settlements Legislative<br />

Council (SSLC), <strong>the</strong> British authorities dared not overtly put <strong>the</strong>ir hands on him, but <strong>in</strong>stead killed<br />

him by conspiracy. 28<br />

In 1934, <strong>the</strong>re w<strong>as</strong> a Dr. Lim Han Hoe ( 林 汉 河 ) among <strong>the</strong> SSLC unofficial members. 29 But it is<br />

not known whe<strong>the</strong>r he w<strong>as</strong> Choon Kwong’s fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

4. English letter from <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern to <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong> MCP, dated 1 June 1934<br />

Below is a summary of its contents:<br />

Cruxes are shown first: (1) An enlarged plenum of <strong>the</strong> CC or <strong>Party</strong> conference <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> various<br />

branch conferences should immediately be convened to implement <strong>the</strong> recent decisions of <strong>the</strong><br />

Com<strong>in</strong>tern. (2) <strong>The</strong> MCP should guide and support Parties and trade unions of Indonesia, Thailand<br />

and Burma. Send reports about <strong>the</strong>m. (3) Send a delegate from Malaya and Indonesia respectively<br />

to <strong>the</strong> 7th World Congress of <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern. (4) Send several comrades to Moscow for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. (5)<br />

Polit-bureau should be enlarged to five <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g at le<strong>as</strong>t one Malay and one Indian.<br />

Details are below:<br />

In addition to our political remarks and recommendations, we fur<strong>the</strong>r wish to suggest a number of<br />

proposals and to call your attention a number of special conditions.<br />

(1) <strong>The</strong> CC should immediately convene an enlarged plenum of <strong>the</strong> CC or a <strong>Party</strong><br />

conference, at which lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Party</strong> activists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> YCL, TUs and o<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>as</strong>s<br />
