ecorded <strong>the</strong> arrest on 22 June 1934 of seven communists, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Secretary of <strong>the</strong> MCP<br />

“Central”. 23 <strong>The</strong> “Secretary” might have been Bun. It appears that difference between Shuji and<br />

Mishu w<strong>as</strong> not discerned by outsiders <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> SB.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> Fourth Representatives’ Conference of September 1935, Yong noted, Ch’en (Chen) Liang,<br />

Liu Teng-chan ( 刘 登 乘 ) and Boo Chih-fu ( 邬 炽 夫 ) were elected CC members. 24 If so, Ch’en w<strong>as</strong><br />

elected <strong>in</strong> absentia because he w<strong>as</strong> supposed to have been <strong>in</strong> prison still.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> memoir of Bun (Li Chi-s<strong>in</strong>), written <strong>in</strong> late 1947, he wrote:<br />

After <strong>the</strong> destruction result<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> arrest of Ducroux’s group, a new CC w<strong>as</strong> formed. Fu [Fu<br />

Hung-chi] w<strong>as</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>ted Secretary. He w<strong>as</strong> a worker and somewhat lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> capability (he came<br />

from Ch<strong>in</strong>a and jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> here). At that time, a post of File Secretary ( 文 书 . wenshu) w<strong>as</strong> set<br />

up. It w<strong>as</strong> <strong>in</strong> charge of draft<strong>in</strong>g resolutions and declarations <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> of conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>spections.<br />

Cd. X (Li Chi-s<strong>in</strong>) <strong>as</strong>sumed this post. It w<strong>as</strong> almost <strong>the</strong> same <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> post of Secretary. In 1932, Cd.<br />

X w<strong>as</strong> sent to Shanghai. Soon after his arrival <strong>in</strong> Shanghai, he managed to contact <strong>the</strong> FEB<br />

(Alim<strong>in</strong>) 25 and <strong>the</strong> CCP. Alim<strong>in</strong> expressed serious distrust of <strong>the</strong> MCP. Both gave him written<br />

directives. CCP’s w<strong>as</strong> more concrete. In 1932 or 1933, he came back to Malaya. Soon afterwards, a<br />

Hokkien, namely L<strong>in</strong> (a university student, <strong>the</strong> son of <strong>the</strong> taukeh of <strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore Amusement<br />

Park) (L<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>-chung? or else? to be exam<strong>in</strong>ed) 26 became Secretary (maybe due to Fu’s arrest).<br />

He died of tuberculosis. After his death, ano<strong>the</strong>r comrade became Secretary.<br />

Cd. X came back to Shanghai <strong>in</strong> 1934 and w<strong>as</strong> arrested <strong>in</strong> August <strong>in</strong> that year. This time around,<br />

<strong>the</strong> CC w<strong>as</strong> totally annihilated. 27<br />

We can understand now how different <strong>the</strong> words “shuji ( 书 记 )” and “mishu ( 秘 书 )” were. “Mishu”<br />

should be <strong>the</strong> “wenshu” (File Secretary) <strong>in</strong> Li’s memoir. Li w<strong>as</strong> not officially appo<strong>in</strong>ted secretary<br />

but he w<strong>as</strong> virtually <strong>the</strong> secretary. Hence, <strong>the</strong> Special Branch might have regarded him to be <strong>the</strong><br />

official secretary.<br />
