1932, demonstrations aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Bill were arranged. Presence of police prevented trouble for <strong>the</strong><br />

first two occ<strong>as</strong>ions. On <strong>the</strong> third occ<strong>as</strong>ion, demonstration materialised and 59 were arrested, large<br />

portion of whom were senior students of <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese High School, Bukit Timah Road. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

commemorated <strong>the</strong> 5th anniversary of <strong>the</strong> Canton Upris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> well. On 12 December 1932, a<br />

serious riot occurred <strong>in</strong> Kulai, a small village <strong>in</strong> Johor. Some three hundred Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>as</strong>sembled.<br />

Two Police Constables were severely <strong>as</strong>saulted. Police killed two leaders and arrested a number of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese. 11<br />

II 1933<br />

1. One file conta<strong>in</strong>ed Ch<strong>in</strong>ese-language documents of <strong>the</strong> Draft Resolutions of <strong>the</strong> First<br />

Enlarged Plenum of <strong>the</strong> MCP. 12 This document w<strong>as</strong> published on 5 April 1933 and a copy<br />

w<strong>as</strong> submitted ( 交 抄 ) on 25 August 1934. <strong>The</strong> file also conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> General Conclusion of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Second Enlarged Plenum of <strong>the</strong> MCP. It w<strong>as</strong> written on 5 September 1933 and its copy<br />

w<strong>as</strong> submitted on 26 August 1934.<br />

<strong>The</strong> draft resolutions perta<strong>in</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g matters:<br />

<strong>The</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>se two MCP documents reached <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern only <strong>in</strong> late August 1934 suggested<br />

that it took a year for <strong>the</strong>m to restore <strong>the</strong>ir communications.<br />
