Ishak Institute (ISEAS) of S<strong>in</strong>gapore, which accepted me <strong>as</strong> a Visit<strong>in</strong>g Senior Researcher for three<br />

months, from 26 January till 25 April 2015. At ISEAS, its Director, Mr. Tan Ch<strong>in</strong> Tiong,<br />

occ<strong>as</strong>ionally encouraged me to complete <strong>the</strong> work. I greatly appreciate ISEAS <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g its Library<br />

and all its staff, especially Mr. Tan Ch<strong>in</strong> Tiong and Dr. Lee Hock Guan, for k<strong>in</strong>dly giv<strong>in</strong>g me an<br />

opportunity and place to concentrate myself on completion of this research.<br />

I shared an office-room with an em<strong>in</strong>ent historian, Dr. Leon Comber. He k<strong>in</strong>dly suggested to me<br />

that microfilms of <strong>the</strong> Shanghai Municipal Police Special Branch <strong>Files</strong> (SMPF) were kept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Central Library of <strong>the</strong> National University of S<strong>in</strong>gapore (NUS). NUS Library k<strong>in</strong>dly allowed me to<br />

read <strong>the</strong>se microfilms. I am grateful to Dr. Comber, <strong>the</strong> NUS Library and its staff.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t stage of writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> draft, I <strong>as</strong>ked Ms. Larisa Nikit<strong>in</strong>a, a Ph.D. candidate of University of<br />

Malaya (She took Ph.D. half a year later), to clarify uncerta<strong>in</strong> portions of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al Russianlanguage<br />

documents and to correct Roman spell<strong>in</strong>g of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese names which were orig<strong>in</strong>ally written<br />

<strong>in</strong> Russian. I am deeply grateful to her.<br />

This study follows <strong>the</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>sification of <strong>the</strong> documents of <strong>the</strong> RSASPH employed by Professor<br />

Kurihara, such <strong>as</strong> Ф. 495 оп.62 д.30.<br />
