more than 400, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Malays and Indians, participated.<br />

with <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong> CCP.<br />

A fur<strong>the</strong>r exam<strong>in</strong>ation of this table reveals a few <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g facts. Most of “Seamen” would be<br />

b<strong>as</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore, and <strong>Party</strong> membership of S<strong>in</strong>gapore far surp<strong>as</strong>sed o<strong>the</strong>r places. When we<br />

compare this table with <strong>the</strong> Table 1 of <strong>the</strong> membership of trade unions, it could be discerned that<br />

many of <strong>the</strong>m might be service workers, salesmen and factory workers. Negeri Sembilan, Johor and<br />

Perak followed S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number of members <strong>in</strong> this order, and many of <strong>the</strong>m must be<br />

rubber tappers.<br />

None<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong> MCP’s strength had not expanded rapidly with<strong>in</strong> half a year and <strong>the</strong> Special<br />

Branch did not have accurate figures on <strong>the</strong> party’s membership and <strong>in</strong>fluence.<br />
