(1) Name of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong>: for several years, <strong>the</strong> party w<strong>as</strong> variously named. While it w<strong>as</strong> a<br />
branch committee of <strong>the</strong> CCP, it w<strong>as</strong> also called <strong>the</strong> Malay Archipelago <strong>Communist</strong><br />
<strong>Party</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Malay (<strong>Communist</strong>) <strong>Party</strong>, or Ch<strong>in</strong>ese (<strong>Communist</strong>) <strong>Party</strong> of Malay<br />
Archipelago. <strong>The</strong> name of Malay <strong>Party</strong> might have emerged because <strong>the</strong> relevant<br />
persons of <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern could not dist<strong>in</strong>guish Malay from Malaya. 27<br />
(2) <strong>The</strong> General Committee (Stand<strong>in</strong>g Committee) should be <strong>the</strong> Presidium.<br />
(3) <strong>The</strong> <strong>Party</strong>’s official <strong>as</strong>sembly w<strong>as</strong> also called by different names – Congress (which<br />
w<strong>as</strong> its own usage <strong>in</strong> English where<strong>as</strong> scholars have tended to use Conference),<br />
Plenum and Enlarged Plenum. Had <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> followed <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern system,<br />
Congress (Conference) would have been <strong>the</strong> national representatives’ <strong>as</strong>sembly<br />
while Plenum would have referred to <strong>the</strong> <strong>as</strong>sembly of <strong>the</strong> Central Committee or <strong>the</strong><br />
Presidium.<br />
(4) <strong>The</strong> First Congress of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> w<strong>as</strong> held <strong>in</strong> 1927 and <strong>the</strong> Second <strong>in</strong> 1930. Yet, <strong>the</strong><br />
Third Congress w<strong>as</strong> said to have been held before <strong>the</strong> Plenum of 2 July 1928 (1.-<br />
(13)). It would appear that this “Third Congress” w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> Enlarged Plenum of May<br />
1928. In this, <strong>the</strong> sequence of officials meet<strong>in</strong>g might have been confus<strong>in</strong>g even to<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> leaders <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />
(5) <strong>The</strong> Russian spell<strong>in</strong>g of a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese name followed <strong>the</strong> Mandar<strong>in</strong> pronunciation.<br />
Likewise, <strong>the</strong> spell<strong>in</strong>g of place names followed <strong>the</strong> Mandar<strong>in</strong> pronunciation of<br />
specific Ch<strong>in</strong>ese names, not <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al Malay names. In all likelihood, <strong>the</strong> authors<br />
of <strong>the</strong> relevant reports were <strong>in</strong>tellectuals familiar with Mandar<strong>in</strong>.<br />
(6) Some names of <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern documents can be reconciled with those<br />
of leaders mentioned by p<strong>as</strong>t research. As Tables 2-1 and 2-2 show, one can<br />
re<strong>as</strong>onably identify some leaders whose names differed somewhat depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />
sources used by researchers.<br />
(7) <strong>The</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern documents provide a detailed picture of <strong>the</strong> structure of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong><br />
leadership at <strong>the</strong> Plenum of 2 July 1928, <strong>as</strong> shown below:<br />
Presidium<br />
Expelled: Huang Mu Heng (Wong Muk-han)<br />
Resigned: Ma Ye B<strong>in</strong>g (Mah Yap-peng)<br />
