7. Shanghai Municipal Police <strong>Files</strong><br />
One file entitled Report on communist suspect <strong>in</strong> Nank<strong>in</strong>g deals with Fu Ta-ch<strong>in</strong>g ( 傅 大 庆 ) <strong>in</strong><br />
detail. Its cruxes relat<strong>in</strong>g to this period are <strong>as</strong> below:<br />
(1) His name is spelled Foo Thai Keng, Foo Da Ch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> well. His pseudonyms are;<br />
Boon Tat Keng ( 文 达 庆 ), Voo Tat M<strong>in</strong>g ( 符 达 名 ), Vung Tat Qon ( 文 达 宽 ) and<br />
Veng Dah Ch<strong>in</strong>g ( 文 达 庆 ). (Information received from S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>in</strong> April 1932).<br />
(2) A letter sent from S<strong>in</strong>gapore SB to British Vice-Consul, Shanghai (dated 23 July<br />
1931) states; Fu appears to be about 30 years though he gives his age <strong>as</strong> 25.<br />
(3) Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Authorities state that he is a native of Kiangsi ( 江 西 ) and studied <strong>in</strong> Russia<br />
and France. He <strong>as</strong>sisted Borod<strong>in</strong> when <strong>the</strong> latter w<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong>sociated with <strong>the</strong> KMT <strong>in</strong><br />
1926.<br />
(4) From evidence <strong>in</strong> possession of S<strong>in</strong>gapore Police, Fu first arrived <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>in</strong><br />
November 1928. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Communist</strong> movement <strong>in</strong> Malaya w<strong>as</strong> under his direction<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n until his arrest on 1 June 1931.<br />
(5) Before his arrest, <strong>the</strong> Shanghai SB possessed no <strong>in</strong>formation about him. 26<br />
8. Tentative Analyses<br />
Compar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern files with some historians’ research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> present author h<strong>as</strong> tried<br />
to clarify some salient po<strong>in</strong>ts about <strong>the</strong> communist movement <strong>in</strong> Malaya before <strong>the</strong> establishment<br />
of <strong>the</strong> MCP. <strong>The</strong>se po<strong>in</strong>ts may be usefully recapitulated here:<br />
