shoemakers’ strike (which even featured bomb-throw<strong>in</strong>g) from February to April.<br />

This ph<strong>as</strong>e of violence w<strong>as</strong> followed by a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese nationalist anti-Japan ph<strong>as</strong>e.<br />

(Yong noted without elaboration that <strong>the</strong> NPC paid <strong>the</strong> full price for this<br />

experimentation: <strong>the</strong> NPC w<strong>as</strong> reorganized after admitted that <strong>the</strong> policy w<strong>as</strong><br />

wrong.) 20<br />

With regard to Fu Tai-keng of (21), Hanrahan noted that follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> persu<strong>as</strong>ion of Tan Malaka,<br />

Chief Com<strong>in</strong>tern representative for all Sou<strong>the</strong><strong>as</strong>t Asia of early 1926, <strong>the</strong> CCP sent a special<br />

representative, reportedly named Fu Ta-ch<strong>in</strong>g [Fu Tai-keng] to Malaya. 21<br />

In <strong>the</strong> footnote, Hanrahan wrote that this <strong>in</strong>formation w<strong>as</strong> b<strong>as</strong>ed on page 335 of Chij<strong>in</strong> [Chihiro]<br />

Tsutsui’s Nampo gunsei-ron. 22 In reality, p.335 of Tsutsui’s book is <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t page of his postscript<br />

cum his book itself. No reference w<strong>as</strong> made to <strong>the</strong> MCP, <strong>the</strong> NCP or even Malaya. Instead, on page<br />

146 and 147, Tsutui argued that communist movement <strong>in</strong> Malai 23 began when Fu Da-j<strong>in</strong>g ( 符 大 经 .<br />

Mean<strong>in</strong>g Fu Ta-ch<strong>in</strong>g), who had fled from Guangdong <strong>in</strong> 1925, organized <strong>the</strong> NCP. In that year, <strong>as</strong><br />

a result of a failed riot <strong>in</strong> Guangdong, many CCP members sneaked <strong>in</strong>to S<strong>in</strong>gapore with Fu <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

supreme leader. On that occ<strong>as</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> CCP decided to establish cells <strong>in</strong> this region and dispatched a<br />

French <strong>Communist</strong> <strong>Party</strong> member, Lefranc [ali<strong>as</strong> Ducroux], to cooperate with Fu. In 1931, Fu and<br />

Lefranc were arrested by British authorities. 24<br />

Tsutsui depended on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation provided by <strong>the</strong> Japanese Military Police (JMP. Kempei-tai).<br />

If <strong>the</strong> JMP had seized secret documents left beh<strong>in</strong>d by <strong>the</strong> British SB, it could have gr<strong>as</strong>ped <strong>the</strong><br />

precise relations among Fu, Lefranc, <strong>the</strong> CCP and <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern. Tsutsui’s <strong>in</strong>accurate argument <strong>in</strong><br />

this part shows <strong>the</strong> JMP obta<strong>in</strong>ed this <strong>in</strong>formation from o<strong>the</strong>r sources, probably from <strong>in</strong>terrogation<br />

of arrested MCP members <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Lai Teck.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r po<strong>in</strong>t is, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese characters of Fu Da-j<strong>in</strong>g (Fu Tai-keng) were also not accurate. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to Yong, his name is 傅 大 慶 (Fu Da-q<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Mandar<strong>in</strong>). In this regard, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formant seems ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

not to have provided an accurate <strong>in</strong>formation or not to have known <strong>the</strong> accurate characters.<br />
