document, dated 15 January 1942, signed by D<strong>as</strong>hevskii, and entitled, “Biographical <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

(биографические сведения) and evaluation of <strong>the</strong> leadership of <strong>the</strong> MCP”.<br />

From <strong>the</strong>se two files, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> brief history of <strong>the</strong> MCP (КОМПАРТИЯ<br />

МАЛАЙИ) may be obta<strong>in</strong>ed:<br />

1925 <strong>The</strong> first communist group <strong>in</strong> Malaya emerged among <strong>the</strong> overse<strong>as</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese.<br />

1926 A committee w<strong>as</strong> formed to set up <strong>the</strong> South Se<strong>as</strong> (Южные Моря) <strong>Communist</strong><br />

<strong>Party</strong> (SSCP).<br />

1927 <strong>The</strong> First Congress (Съезд) of <strong>the</strong> SSCP w<strong>as</strong> held and a Provisional Committee w<strong>as</strong><br />

set up. Ow<strong>in</strong>g to its youthfulness and a lack of guidance from <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Party</strong> w<strong>as</strong> weak. 4<br />

1929 Regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> characteristics of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malayan</strong> revolution, <strong>the</strong> SSCP received<br />

<strong>in</strong>structions from <strong>the</strong> Central Committee (CC) of <strong>the</strong> CCP.<br />

1930 <strong>The</strong> Second Congress of <strong>the</strong> SSCP w<strong>as</strong> held and <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong> MCP w<strong>as</strong> elected.<br />

From <strong>the</strong>n on, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> stood on its own. Even so, <strong>the</strong> national liberation movement<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a and <strong>the</strong> t<strong>as</strong>ks of <strong>the</strong> CCP always affected <strong>the</strong> t<strong>as</strong>ks of <strong>the</strong> MCP. 5<br />

Filed between <strong>the</strong> two Russian language files w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> English document, “<strong>The</strong> general conditions<br />

of <strong>the</strong> trade union movement”. Written <strong>in</strong> 1931, this document reviewed <strong>the</strong> activities of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Communist</strong> organizations <strong>in</strong> this period <strong>as</strong> follows:<br />

<strong>The</strong> trade union movement <strong>in</strong> Nanyang (sic) began <strong>in</strong> 1925 and at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> tu-s [sic. trade<br />

unions] were under <strong>the</strong> control of Kuom<strong>in</strong>tang…. (T)here were organisational relations with <strong>the</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>Party</strong>. Though delegates were sent to Wuhang [Wuhan 武 汉 ?] to attend <strong>the</strong> conference, it<br />

took a long time to make regular connections with <strong>the</strong> All-Ch<strong>in</strong>a Federation of Labour. It w<strong>as</strong> after<br />

<strong>the</strong> delegated conference of <strong>the</strong> All-NY [sic. Nanyang] Federation of Labour which w<strong>as</strong> held <strong>in</strong><br />

February, 1928, 6 that <strong>the</strong>re were reorganised (sic) <strong>the</strong> org-s of <strong>the</strong> trade unions. From February to<br />

April <strong>in</strong> 1928, <strong>the</strong>re occurred upris<strong>in</strong>gs of very violent nature …. It w<strong>as</strong> at this time that <strong>the</strong> tus<br />

were reorganised from <strong>the</strong> left KMT, and its org.s (sic) were suddenly enlarged. <strong>The</strong> membership<br />

w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>n 4,000. But after <strong>the</strong> defeat of <strong>the</strong> shoe-makers strike and <strong>the</strong> committ<strong>in</strong>g of various<br />

mistakes on works, <strong>the</strong> tu mov. [movement] received a great blow and it w<strong>as</strong> at a standstill for <strong>the</strong><br />
