when Lai Teck could not conv<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> radical CSC or CEC members (perhaps notably represented<br />

by leaders from Perak).<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> united front l<strong>in</strong>e to cooperate with national bourgeoisie <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> British<br />

Imperialist w<strong>as</strong> opposed by <strong>the</strong> leftists. But <strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>o-Japanese war of 1937 and <strong>the</strong> Anti-Japanese<br />

National Salvation Movement, which subsequently got huge momentum, appeared to have buried<br />

<strong>the</strong> rift between <strong>the</strong> two factions. In <strong>the</strong> first two years after <strong>as</strong>sum<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Secretary General <strong>in</strong><br />

1939, Lai Teck might not be able to persuade <strong>the</strong> leftists to accept his moderate united front policy.<br />

But impend<strong>in</strong>g Japanese <strong>in</strong>v<strong>as</strong>ion compelled <strong>the</strong> leftists to, sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong>ide <strong>the</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>s l<strong>in</strong>e, accept Anti-<br />

Japanese United Front policy. Unified, <strong>the</strong> party might have streng<strong>the</strong>n Lai Teck’s position. In <strong>the</strong><br />

Notice of <strong>the</strong> Central Polit-bureau of <strong>the</strong> MCP dated 26 August 1940, 10 Lai Teck w<strong>as</strong> praised at its<br />

very beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> “our <strong>Party</strong>’s brilliant leader ( 英 明 的 领 袖 ), Comrade Lai Teck”. It might mean<br />

that by this time Lai Teck’s position <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> w<strong>as</strong> solidified. Soon after Japan occupied Malaya,<br />

Lai Teck became a spy of <strong>the</strong> Japanese Kempeitai and subsequently sold out to <strong>the</strong> Japanese almost<br />

all <strong>the</strong> prom<strong>in</strong>ent leaders of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong>. Thus his dictatorship <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> w<strong>as</strong> consolidated.<br />

14. It must have been a fatal contradiction or a tragedy that while <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern stressed time<br />

and aga<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> MCP’s strategy should be b<strong>as</strong>ed on concrete, practical, local, political, social and<br />

economic conditions, <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern’s <strong>in</strong>structions were more often than not formulated by people<br />

who were not sufficiently versed with <strong>Malayan</strong> affairs. <strong>The</strong>se <strong>in</strong>structions were not necessarily<br />

concrete and precise. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>structions were communicated via uncerta<strong>in</strong> and unreliable<br />

methods which were subjected to <strong>the</strong> scrut<strong>in</strong>y of <strong>the</strong> British authorities. In this sense, it might be<br />

natural, and at <strong>the</strong> same time ironical that after <strong>the</strong>ir connection w<strong>as</strong> severed <strong>the</strong> MCP developed<br />

and streng<strong>the</strong>ned its <strong>in</strong>fluence among <strong>Malayan</strong> people, though generally restricted to Ch<strong>in</strong>ese, more<br />

steadily and solidly than before.<br />

15. L<strong>as</strong>tly, Table of <strong>the</strong> List of Secretary of <strong>the</strong> MCP is attached <strong>as</strong> an appendix.<br />
