Letter sent from <strong>the</strong> MCP Central (S<strong>in</strong>gapore) to <strong>the</strong> CCP Central (Shanghai) dated 26 March<br />

This letter w<strong>as</strong> addressed to Tiao Tiong Beng or Zao Tsoong M<strong>in</strong>g ( 赵 忠 明 ), c/o Soh ( 苏 ). It w<strong>as</strong><br />

stopped on <strong>the</strong> same day <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore, <strong>the</strong>n translated and forwarded to <strong>the</strong> British Consul-General<br />

<strong>in</strong> Shanghai. SMP recorded it <strong>in</strong> a report dated 25 April 1936.<br />

Summary of <strong>the</strong> letter is below:<br />

We [<strong>the</strong> MCP] sent a seaman courier to Amoy to reestablish contact with you.<br />

On 5 June 1935, we sent ano<strong>the</strong>r comrade to Shanghai. No news about him. In<br />

August 1935, several organizations <strong>in</strong> Shanghai were discovered and comrades<br />

arrested. One w<strong>as</strong> reported to be <strong>in</strong> possession of documents from Malaya and a map<br />

of S<strong>in</strong>gapore Naval B<strong>as</strong>e. He w<strong>as</strong> probably our comrade.<br />

Ple<strong>as</strong>e <strong>in</strong>stantly establish a close liaison with us.<br />

<strong>The</strong> address to which this letter is sent is given by a revolutionary refugee who left<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a long before. He cannot ensure this letter can reach you. Ple<strong>as</strong>e send reply to<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g two addresses of S<strong>in</strong>gapore [omitted here].<br />

SB note written on <strong>the</strong> document runs: This letter is written <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> handwrit<strong>in</strong>g of Choa Bun Seng (<br />

蔡 文 盛 ), <strong>the</strong> present secretary of MCP Central. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Yong, Secretary of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Party</strong> <strong>in</strong> this<br />

period w<strong>as</strong> Ts’ai Pai-yun ( 蔡 白 云 ) who w<strong>as</strong> to be arrested <strong>in</strong> January 1937. 24 Choa Bun Seng must<br />

be his pseudonym.<br />

SMP’s report of 25 April 1936 runs: Arrested “comrade” mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter refers to a raid<br />

carried out by <strong>the</strong> SMP on 22 July 1935. <strong>The</strong> man arrested <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong> seizure of <strong>the</strong><br />

sketch of <strong>the</strong> naval b<strong>as</strong>e w<strong>as</strong> one Iong Ch<strong>in</strong> Sng ( 杨 进 胜 ). <strong>The</strong> characters for such a name are not<br />

to be found <strong>in</strong> SMP records. 25 Iong Ch<strong>in</strong> Sng must be Iun Ch<strong>in</strong> Sun who w<strong>as</strong> mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
