delivered documents kept <strong>in</strong> Moscow could reveal whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> documents were <strong>in</strong>tact or detected.<br />

For that matter, detailed Com<strong>in</strong>tern files could now provide a fuller picture of Com<strong>in</strong>tern-MCP<br />

correspondence where only fragments were formerly available. This is especially important to<br />

clarify <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions to <strong>the</strong> MCP that came not only from <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern but also from <strong>the</strong> CCP.<br />

Only thus can researchers accurately <strong>as</strong>sess <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of <strong>in</strong>structions delivered to <strong>the</strong> MCP and<br />

<strong>the</strong> MCP’s responses to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Internal Disputes and <strong>the</strong> Split of <strong>the</strong> MCP<br />

In <strong>the</strong>ir work, Yong 11 and Cheah 12 had cited significant disputes or splits among MCP members<br />

along political l<strong>in</strong>es between 1932 and 1936. <strong>The</strong> MCP’s own booklet published <strong>in</strong> 1946 also cited<br />

<strong>the</strong> emergence of a “renegade faction” <strong>in</strong> 1932 and 1935. 13 Here, aga<strong>in</strong>, Com<strong>in</strong>tern documents<br />

might provide new <strong>in</strong>formation and evidence on those <strong>in</strong>ternal disputes, and possibly o<strong>the</strong>rs that<br />

had not come to light <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g literature.<br />

Trade Union Movement and <strong>the</strong> MCP<br />

Besides <strong>the</strong> above issues, it is also necessary to <strong>in</strong>vestigate <strong>the</strong> trade union movements to which <strong>the</strong><br />

communist organizations from <strong>the</strong> very beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g made a great effort to expand <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fluence and<br />

to improve <strong>the</strong> lives of <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>alized work<strong>in</strong>g cl<strong>as</strong>s of Malaya. We will exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

Com<strong>in</strong>tern’s <strong>in</strong>structions on labour movements and <strong>the</strong>ir effectiveness; how and when did <strong>the</strong><br />

movements develop?<br />

Thus, <strong>the</strong> analyses of Com<strong>in</strong>tern documents should far<strong>the</strong>r current understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> pre-Pacific<br />

War history of <strong>the</strong> MCP. Clearly, though, <strong>the</strong>re may still be gaps <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> documentary evidence. For<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, while draft<strong>in</strong>g an article once, I became aware that documents concern<strong>in</strong>g Lai Teck, who<br />

w<strong>as</strong> Secretary General of <strong>the</strong> MCP between 1939 and 1947 and a British agent at <strong>the</strong> same time,<br />

were absent even though Krihara had referred to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> his book (see Note 1-3). As such, one can<br />

say that <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern did not dispatch Lai Teck <strong>as</strong> its representative, but one obviously cannot say<br />

how <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern regarded Lai Teck <strong>in</strong> his heyday. In any c<strong>as</strong>e, to re-visit <strong>the</strong> MCP’s early<br />

history accurately, I have systematically compared <strong>the</strong> documentary evidence conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

available Com<strong>in</strong>tern files aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> published f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of researchers such Yong and Cheah <strong>as</strong><br />

well <strong>as</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation provided by <strong>the</strong> MCP’s own publications.<br />
