THE LAND
IS A HAVEN FOR ADULTS AND
CHILDREN ALIKE

Marathon: The unique city in the world that has given its name to
an Olympic sport. The only Greek city that is the most renowned in
the whole world, even more renowned than Athens, the capital of
Greece.
The name Marathon is inextricably connected to the history
of the Greek nation ever since the ancient times. In classical
history, one of the most renowned battles took place in
the Marathon plain, a battle that symbolises the unquenchable
love of Greek people for freedom and independence.
Marathon constitutes an emblematic symbol of democracy and the
trophy of supremacy of human values and spirit against any conqueror.
The Marathon Tetrapolis In antiquity, Marathon included four
municipalities: Marathon, Oinoi, Trikorynthos of the Aiantid tribe and
Provalinthos of the Pandionid tribe. All four of them constituted a
local union,Tetrapolis (meaning “four cities”). The borders of those
municipalities are not clearly defined. However, based on the ancient
signs, we set them in the wider region of Marathon from Nea Makri
to Oinoi.

THE SURROUNDING AREA
Schinias National Park: A rare ecosystem
A wetland, a coastal pine forest, a freshwater spring, a peninsula, a hill and a magnificent bay. This is the embossed landscape composed by the most important
coastal ecosystem of Attica. An area of 13.84 square kilometres where water is the dominant factor starting from the springs and flowing to the sea preserving
swamps, lakes and streams. At the National Park of Schinias one can encounter foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, rabbits, reptiles, turtles, frogs... Visitors are attracted
every year for pleasure (pleasure beaches, swimming, water sports), bird watching and enjoying the scenery.
Historically, the area identifies with the battlefield of Marathon, and particularly the Persians’ camp. It includes also the Olympic Rowing Centre of Athens 2004
Olympic Games. The area belongs to the Natura 2000 network (code GR 3000003) with a total of 19 habitat types, 115 bird species with a potential diversity of
215 species while there are threatened species of freshwater fish, amphibians and reptiles. The National Park of Schinias consists of the following ecosystems:
Pine forest of Schinias: The coastal pine forest (one of the few remaining in Europe) is located between the wetland and the sea, on a sandy area with
dunes and is one of the three pine forests in Greece halepo pine (Pinus halepensis), which gradually replace it.
The Cynosura Peninsula: The Cynosura Peninsula and the Drakonera hill are limestone formations, covered by bushy, Mediterranean vegetation where the
shrub Juniperus phoenicea predominates.
Makaria Spring: The Makaria spring streams in the northwest of the National Park, preserving two freshwater and brackish water lakes.
Schinias Wetland: A wetland with sweet, salty and brackish water, reeds, trees, halophytic vegetation and wet meadows, which floods regularly. We encounter
a great variety of threatened bird fauna, of species such as Ardea purpurea, Ardeola ralloides, Circus aeruginosus, Circus pygargus, Cisticola juncidis, Egretta
garzetta, Ixobrychus minutus, Plegadis falcinellus.
Lake Stomi: The lower part of the wetland on the eastern edge, which is seasonally flooding with salt water.
Schinias Bay: On the bay’s sandy bottom we encounter Posidonia (Posidonia oceanica), a plant that grows only in clean water. In the rocky side of Cynosura
peninsula, different underwater vegetation with higher algae is being developed.
