TERROR
AT NOON
Traumatic testimonies of their 8th June experience will
tell you how the residents of a 80-years old Fernandes
Chawl, located in the Old Khar gaothan on a 922 sq m plot,
off S.V. Road were rendered homeless within minutes -
just like an earthquake. Their world was torn apart, when
their entire chawl (approx. 47 families) was demolished
by the collector, with a police protection force of over 240,
between 12 noon till 6:30 p.m. Suddenly, panic prevailed
and chaotic war-like scenes of terror were witnessed, as
brute force was used to vacate the residents - without allowing
them to remove their belongings. Many were
whisked away in police vans, to a school premises! Then
- cash, gold & valuables were looted, even as the JCBs
broke the structures to the ground, leaving rubble & ruin.
It was a nightmare – that turned real.
BANDRA BUZZ
JUNE 2016 03
Ramazan is, in its essence,
a month of humanist spirituality
Recently Ms. Atiya Khan shared her experience
and threw some light on the holy
month of Ramazan. Ramazan is the 9th
month of the Islamic calendar. It is the
month of prayers, blessings, charity & self
control. To elaborate more, 5 times of
prayers (Salaat) are the integral part in
Islam but it becomes more compulsive in
this month in which you must put in your
soul. There is namaz of Taraweeh in which
the recitation of Quran is done, Quran has
30 chapters so 1 chapter recited each day,
at some places its compiled to 5 chapters or
even 10 chapters to conclude in 10 days
these are mainly done for travellers.
Taraweeh is compulsory for men but it is
optional for women as there are certain
days that they must refrain from fasting
and prayers but reciting any dua or just
even asking for forgiveness is rewarding.
Fasting is, first and foremost, an exercise
for identifying and managing adversity
in all its forms. With faith, in full conscience,
fasting calls women and men to an
extra degree of self-awareness. The philosophy
of fasting calls upon us to know ourselves,
to master ourselves, and to discipline
ourselves the better to free ourselves.
To fast is to identify our dependencies, and
free ourselves from them. If one is ill or an
elderly person cannot perform the fast,
they can give Sadqa or Zakaat in order to
compensate for the fast and feed a needy
and destitutes.
Ramadhan is derived from Arabic word
Ramad which means scorching heat or dryness,
we must refrain from eating drinking,
smoking, cutting nails or even oiling hair or
applying any kind of creams, engaging in
sexual relation, malpractices, backbiting,
telling lies.
Fasting starts before dawn till sunset
and it is observed for 29 30 days after sighting
the crescent moon the next morning is
celebrated as Eid Ul- Fitr. Its a very auspicious
celebration which starts with a special
namaz in the morning where men
perform this namaz in the mosques and
women at home. After that there is celebrations
with varieties of special dishes and
unique Shir Qorma that is a sweet dish of
vermicelli made in milk. It is also a festival
Family members gather together at sunset to break their Ramadan fast called Iftar
to clear all malices and get united wish
each other and celebrate together. Muslims
visit each other greet Eid Mubarak. Elders
give money to the children of the family
known as Eidi.
Eid is celebrated by Muslims but there
are other divisions in Muslim like the Khoja
Muslim they fast two days prior to other
Muslims also celebrate Eid two days prior.
There is a special mosque of this community
which is visited by both men and
women accompanied by children. This is a
very good way to educate the children
about ones religion the salutations customs
and breaking the fast together in the
mosque where all are treated equally they
pray together and also celebrate Eid together.
Strengthen your Immune System with
Bee Propolis to avoid colds, coughs and fever
The monsoon season brings with it a lot of
water-borne diseases. Getting wet in the
rains can lead to further complications, if
precautions are not taken. If our body’s immune
system is weak, we are prone to
falling sick with cold, cough, fever or other
diseases like typhoid, malaria, etc. Germs
invade our bodies, creating havoc with our
health. Then one thing leads to another. So,
a strong immune system will stop the onslaught
of germs and keep us healthy.
Bee Propolis: Help is at hand. When we
think of bees, honey and pollen are usually
the first things that come to mind. However,
there's another powerful substance
that bees play an integral role in, propolis.
Derived from the Greek - meaning “before
the city”, signifying defense from external
threat, propolis is a sticky resin collected by
bees. Honey bees collect & metabolize the
propolis, then line their hives with it for
protection. It’s so effective, that the interior
of the bee hive has been found to be safer
than most operating rooms!
The use of propolis has a 5000-year history.
The Assyrians and the Greeks used
propolis to help maintain good health. Bee
Propolis supports the body's natural defenses.
To assure purity, please make sure
that the Bee Propolis you use is gathered
from pollution-free regions, using specially
designed bee propolis collectors. It should
be 100% natural with no added preservatives
or artificial colors.
This is a natural anti-biotic, so while the
bad bacteria is killed, the good bacteria
which our body needs so badly is maintained
- unlike most anti-biotics we buy
from chemists. Bee Proplis has no bad side
effects. In fact, with a strong immune system,
we can boldly face the world - in spite
of weather variations and other factors.
Let’s get healthy - naturally
Feng Shui The Man of Your Home
with Feng Shui Expert Maria Hussain
Hope you all had a great Father’s Day. This
month, I want to share some tips to help
You support the Man of your Home - the
Father, the Patriarch, the Bread Earner.
Each sector of your home represents a
Family Member in Feng Shui and the
North West sector is that of The Patriarch.
It also relates to help create more opportunities
for travel; it attracts benefactors,
mentors and helpful people in your life.
When the North West area is activated
with enhancements listed below, it brings
healthy Chi (energy) to the space and contributes
to the supportive energy of the father.
It also has the bonus ability to help
propel your family forward.
• A great way to support and nurture the
Patriarch is to Declutter this area, place
plants, light it up & regularly use the space
• Art, photos, collages or figures pertaining
to spiritual guides, and/or mentors or
helpful people. Displaying pictures here
of inspiring family, friends & personalities,
signifies guidance in achieving your goals.
• Special places where you have travelled
or where you want to travel. A globe or a
world map.
• Quotes, affirmations and sayings pertaining
to helpful people and travel like “I
constantly attract helpful, generous, loving
people into my life”; “I am in the right
place at the right time, and I meet the
right people at the right time”.
Though if this area is missing in your living
space or is cluttered or if it is a storage
space, toilet or bathroom, the MEN in
your family may actually feel burdened,
unsupported, lacking motivation and
even like he is struggling in his career.
Feng Shui can be the solution to some of
your problems, and the helpful people
corner is a great place to begin. For questions
or consultations, call 9967678652 or
same, such as pictures of mountains.
A Beacon Light for Life
As custodians of the future of the country,
we are sure that your vast experience has
sensitized you to the fact that today’s children
are not growing up in the same world
that we did. Stress, fear, peer pressure, bullying,
sexual predators, classroom violence,
tech addiction have all taken over
our children, and they have more to deal
with than our earlier generations ever did.
It’s phenomenal how the same technology
that brings us close to those who are far
away takes us far away from the people
that are actually close.
Paradox of our times quotes that, “We
have more degrees, but less sense; more
knowledge, but less judgement, more experts,
but more problem; more medicines,
but less wellness. We have multiplied our
possessions, but reduced our values”. So
may be the question your asking in your
mind while reading this is, how do we bring
about a change? And it starts with us, each
one of us pressing pause, reset & play again.
Taking a moment to become: more conscious
as parents, more aware as citizens,
to really reflect on the consequence, the
implications of a misplaced word of an unnecessary
argument that we all know we
didn’t need to have, or to speak to someone
just slightly differently in a different tone,
in a different voice, in a different empathy,
with a different perspective. Just to really
connect with people on a different level.
It is a well-established fact that teachers
are the most critical factors that influence
learning and holistic development of students.
While majority of teachers & staff at
schools or coaching institutes are trained
as subject matter experts, we at Kiran
Classes understand the needs of our parents
& look at opportunities to hone other
abilities of teachers in order that they stand
true to their purpose as an inspirational
teacher, a role model for our students.
We strongly believe that every child
possesses tremendous energy which is
waiting to be channelized. Often in this
blind rat race, their mind loses the real
focus. More often, many even do not know
their potential and what they want to do.
Hence, a lot of energy & productivity goes
in vain due to lack of proper guidance & direction.
We firmly believe in shaping the
young minds towards a more productive
outlook for their lives. We do so by providing
them with not only academic education
which will help them score well, but
also look at equipping them with life skills,
values & attitudes which will help them
lead a more fulfilling life. Our interactive &
concept base teaching methodology focuses
on proper understanding of a subject
rather than simply mugging up. Our students
are shaped to be competent, creative
& responsible individuals who will be creating
a better tomorrow.
Kiran Classes has been consistent with
this ideology of going beyond just academics
since its inception 25 years ago. We walk
an extra mile with our students by exposing
them to workshops on topics like communication,
clear goal setting, dedication,
positive approach etc. This approach has
helped us impact several lives and we feel
encouraged when they share their success
stories with us.
I urge you to feel free to fix an appointment
for any academic career counselling
with our professional team members by
calling on 9869030650. Alternatively, you
may write to us, WhatsApp 9004870030
or email us at priya.kcpl@gmail.com and
we would be more than happy to assist
you.
06 JUNE 2016 BANDRA BUZZ EAT OUT
CHOMP ON CHITPOLE AT THC
‘Variety is the spice of life’ which indicates
that bland food is getting you nowhere. We
love our spice, sharing a similar view with
regards to food and life are the senors &
senoritas of Mexico. Mexican cuisine and
ours bear resounding similarities alas with
a defining individual taste factor. For
starters both cuisines witness a stronghold
of rice and are governed by native flavours.
So what happens when a chef from India
working in America stumbles upon a
revered Mexican chilli based sauce called
Chipotle. Pranaay Pathak a home chef
while working with a food truck in the
U.S.A realised that Chipotle chilli flavor
should be introduced to the Indian palate.
Chipotle is what the Mexicans call
jalapenos after they are treated with a slow
smoked process, hereby adding a flavour of
maturity to jalapenos. The taste factor of
these smoked chillies is overwhelming and
crucial to the extent that the final sauce
which is prepared after adding other condiments
is named after the smoked jalapeno
chilli.
Armed with this gastronomical gem
Pranaay arrives home and shares his findings
with food enthusiast Siddhant Thakur.
Together they strive to recreate this sauce,
slightly tweaking it to suit our sensibilities.
After tedious rounds of research and experiments
their search for the perfect blend
culminates. This is the story as to how The
House of Chipotle (THC) came into being,
the restaurant opened their doors to patrons
last year in Bandra and have expanded
to Oshiwara recently.
We at Bandra Buzz decided to hop in
and grab their Chipotle Rice Bowl which
was recommended by our acquaintances.
A healthy portion of coriander lime rice
with a whole lot of wholesomeness
propelled with avocado, corn
salsa, sweet corn, pico de
gallo, salad leaf, red
pepper, refried
b e a n s ,
g u a -
c a m o l e ,
cheese and
chipotle chicken or paneer.
The rice bowl is then
jolted to life with the addition of
the in-house chipotle sauce, salsa raja and
sour cream. The uniqueness of this dish is
that when served the rice is piping hot
while the sauces and salads balance that
out, which are served cool. Mixing it all up
results into one tantalising meal full of
spices and flavours ready to be devoured.
Indeed, devoured we did, the fair was
refreshing to say the least. The minimal
and un-wok like use of oil encouraged us to
try another dish which caught our attention
while going through their informative
menu, behold the Peanut Butter Panini
which is available in chicken and paneer.
The ten inches long panini showcased the
kitchen crew's innovative spirit and we
A blend of hot & cold ingredients used to prepare the Chipotle Rice Bowl alongside the mild, spicy & very spicy Chipotle sauce
gladly gobbled it all up. The house baked
bread rose to the occasion and provided a
solid foundation to this protein fuelled
munch.
B esides
the decision of
dropping by we are glad that
we decided to share the rice
bowl, if not we would have not had
any space to spare for the panini.
All in all it was an impressive affair, balanced
well in terms of health, taste and
value for money. Before going home we decided
to take some back for our glued to the
chair designer, the manager courteously offered
to get it delivered. The package arrived
within the stipulated time frame and
we couldn't help but deprive the designer
of the Chipotle Rice Bowl.
echoed Bandra.
The first of a series of Tyrell’s installations
to come up are the ‘We are the World’
(made with fibre glass and metal) and ‘I
am Bandra’ (made with sheets
of metal) works of art that
have been set up at Bandra’s
periphery near
the Bandra Reclamation
flyover opposite
the MTNL
building and the
R.T.O respectively.
Tyrell started
his studio called
‘Metalhead’ in
2012 after giving
up a successful 8
year long career in the
aviation industry to take
a leap of faith and follow his
creative instinct. Born to an artistic
family he has been sketching and painting
since his early childhood and only recently
decided to pursue a more artistic and passion
driven profession of sculpting metal
art. There was something that fascinated
him about creating with his own 2 hands
and exploring different 2D and 3D shapes
and forms, which propelled him to completing
a course in welding to allow him to
further hone and explore his sculpting
skills. He has since moved on to working
and incorporating various other materials
like wood, glass, resin etc., though he admits
metal will always be his first love.
In the last 3 years Tyrell has had the opportunity
to work with big brands like
Nike, MTV – Viacom18, Google, King Edward
Memorial (KEM) Hospital initiative,
to name a few and is currently working on
a project for Adidas. He is also responsible
for the interior decoration/installations at
the ‘Gangsta’ nightclub and popular restaurant
‘Bhaijaanz’ in Bandra.
At Metalhead, his company’s vision is
to create a platform where art in all its
forms can be expressed exploring limitless
possibilities. They hope to be able to explore
how art and design can
unite people, creating a
unique experience for
each of them through
their own personal
interaction with
the artwork.
Tyrell discloses
that to him art is
the purest form
of self-expression
where he
can be completely
free and
true to himself without
having to ‘colour
within the lines’, so to
speak and that is what drives
him to keep going.
Besides temporary installations, intimate
pieces or larger than life works of art
they also undertake set design and production,
bespoke furniture, sculptures, light art
installations, signage and interior design.
What to look out for: He will be doing wall
murals around Bandra, a series of which
will be complete before the end of 2016.
Tyrell has also exhibited at ‘Celebrate Bandra’
for the past 2 consecutive years:
2014: Artwork entitled ‘Super Ghoda-Gadi’,
a fantasy chariot fashioned out of a 12-foot
long autorickshaw being pulled by a Pegasus.
CHARACTER BASED
WIND CHEATERS
FLUORESCENT SLIPPERS
We have to admit, we were starting to get a
little worried about where our yearly downpours
have been hiding out. With pre-monsoon
showers just last week, we wondered if
we would get to experience monsoon bliss
any time soon! While our suede shoes & hair
were happy, it's about time the rain Gods answered
people’s prayers for some muchneeded
showers. And when it actually does
start raining & pouring (and the old man is
snoring), that’s as good a sign as any you
should go back to bed, right? Sadly, no. The
fact of the matter is - like any other day of the
week you've still got to carry on with business
as usual and we say having the perfect
rainwear onhand is all we can do at this point
Rain can be unpredictable, and it's not always
easy to anticipate when a storm may
come. Umbrellas offer convenient alternatives
to rain clothes, providing a wide cover
over your head to keep droplets from falling
onto your hair and clothing. Ensure that
you're prepared to walk out into the elements
with rain jackets, rain pants and ponchos.
Once you find the best rain gear to suit
your lifestyle, you can always stay dry and
comfortable. Rain jackets with hoods and
drawstring closures provide adjustable coverage,
and ponchos can be easily tucked into
a bag for use when camping or on vacation.
Disposable options deliver added convenience
when you’re on the go, while rain coats
and rain pants provide coverage for heavy
storm conditions. Complete your weatherready
rainwear with rain shoes or rubber
boots. Clothes aren't the only items that offer
protection in rainy conditions when you're
outdoors. In addition to the proper rainwear,
waterproof storage solutions are also a must
when seeking to keep valuables from facing
water damage. Waterproof utility pouches
keep papers and other accessories dry, while
waterproof bags, duffels and electronics
cases are ideal for safeguarding your precious
essentials from the rain.
And in case you’re wondering where you
can get your hands on the latest rain wear
trends then check out some of these shops.
Design Touch (Hill Road, Bandra West)
Design Touch is a multi brand shoes and
clothing store for newborns and children up
to 15 years. If your family has been raving
about brands that they are using abroad and
you’re wondering where to find it, come in
here and you are very likely to find it. They
have a huge selection of raincoats with the
latest movie themed designs and cartoon
characters kids will love in a rainbow of colors,
as well as a stylish selection for both
boys and girl. So if you have active kids who
need to get outside and stay dry don’t give
this shop a miss!
New Decent Collection (Hill Road, Bandra
West)
Along with having a stylish adult collection
of raincoats for both men & women, they
also has a wide range of waterproof purses,
watches, as well as accessories to protect
your mobile, tab, iPad or other valuables
from the rain when you’re on the go. And
while you’re at it you could also indulge
yourself by sinking your teeth into some of
your favorite international chocolates, available
at the lower level of the shop!
Good Luck Store (Shop No 4-5, Rizvi Palace,
Hill Road, Bandra West)
The colors and patterns of these rain shoes
are sure to brighten a grey day! This shop has
a wide selection to suit your every mood and
personality. No longer do you have to be a
prisoner to those dull black rain shoes, feeling
sporty - there’s a pair for you, feeling like
you want bling - do not fear there is a pair for
you as well, love suede but the sheer
thought of a drop of water falling on them
gives you nightmares - they have an amazing
look alike for that as well, wanna rock out
with gumboots, why not! So now you can
look oh so stylish without burning a hole in
your pocket as well!
Twinkle - The Gift Gallore (Baba Nagar,
Bandra West)
There are some people who love to go shop
to shop and then there are others who prefer
on stop shops! If you’re the latter type then
this is your one stop shop! They have an impressive
range of raincoats for almost every
age group young and old! Be it super heroes
for kids or polka dots for women or the classic
black for men. What’s that you say, you
prefer umbrellas well they have them as well
and that too in every size and color. What
also caught my eye were these very cute and
stylish backpacks made of PVC.
Whether you're preparing to face a light drizzle
or much heavier precipitation, a lot more
thought should go into this purchase than if
the jacket looks waterproof. However dressing
for the rain is certainly about more than
just the coat. With the widest range of colors
available, even if you buy a raincoat in a neutral
color you can wear colorful rain boots,
use bright-colored umbrellas and last but not
the least accessorize.
Why Moringa is the
new superfood?
The roots of ayurveda can be traced to ancient
India and its medicinal benefits are
innumerable and widely prevalent in and
around our homeland. Ayurveda is a holistic
system that integrates the mind, body
and spirit. While there are common alternatives
to it: homoepathy - which takes a
longer time in the process of healing, and
allopathy - which usually has side effects
attached, ayurvedic medication is highly
efficacious besides having a negligibly low
count of side effects.
Ayurleaf Herbals, a provider of premium
ayurveda products was founded in
1989 and has since spread its wings selling
a wide range of ayurvedic herbal products.
Its products have been the first choice for
patients in the ayurvedic medicine industry,
specifically for its use of high quality ingredients
used in its medicines compared
to those used in the market.
In the field of ayurveda, Moringa, more
commonly known as the drumstick tree, is
known to be a superfood for its highly nutritious
profile and a powerful and traditional
remedy for
multiple ailments. Its
anti-inflammatory, antioxidant
and tissue-protective
properties are
used to treat
and prevent
diseases such
as diabetes,
heart disease,
anemia, arthritis,
liver disease,
and
r e s p i r a t o r y,
skin, and digestive
disorders.
Ayurleaf 's
Moringa Tea
for instance, is
loaded with antioxidants
which help detoxify the body and
assist in weight management. This tea also
promotes proper digestion and regulates
sugar levels in the body. Besides, its also enhances
circulation of blood in the body.
The Moringa pods or capsules are an excellent
mode of increasing one's immunity
levels, lowering one's cholesterol levels and
treating liver and spleen problems & joint
pains, which are very common these days.
Moringa pods are nature's multi-vitamin
supplements - containing high levels of vitamins
A and C, as also high levels of calcium,
potassium and protein. Recently, patients
at many hospitals with low
immunity levels were administered
Ayurleaf's Moringa capsules. These patients
were seen to have increased their immunity
levels leading to quicker discharge
without a hint of any side-effects.
What sets Ayurleaf Herbals apart from
its competitors is its emphasis on using the
best quality ingredients in its formulations.
Using high quality ingredients increases
the efficacy of its medicines not
just on the body, but also the mind
and spirit, which, in combination
form the essence of ayurveda and
its practice.
While ayurveda continues to
gain acceptance and popularity in
our city, Ayurleaf Herbals has all
the ayurvedic answers to ensure
your remain in the pink of health,
come rain or sunshine.
Romantic Rains?
TRIBUTE TO JESSIE D’ABREO
Remembering Jessie Mildred D’Abreo,
dearly known as ‘Aunty Jessie’, only as
one of the finest seamstress, falls significantly
short of what this multi faceted and
multi talented personality deserves.
Her talent and accomplishments as a
creator of Bridal Gowns and Trousseaus
was there for all to see. Yet those who
have had the good fortune of spending
significant amount of time with her, will
remember her - more as an epitome of
‘women empowerment’ in more ways
than one.
Auntie Jessie was not one of those
‘burn the bra’ variety of western feminists.
On the contrary, she instilled in little girls
and young women, a form of empowerment
more in line with the Indian and
Christian value systems.
She guided - and if needed, nudged
these young people into understanding
how a woman can truly be empowered:
by contributing to family income, helping
children achieve their dreams, through
habits of tiny savings that housewives
could make - and above all by appreciating
and encouraging the talent and good
that she saw in every human being. She
was above all else, a hardcore optimist.
But most of all, she will be remembered as
the person anyone could approach with a
problem - and rest assured of receiving a
solution.
Enrolling in Auntie Jessie’s Sewing
Classes, resulted not only in learning the
finer points of the art of “cutting and
sewing”, but also the added bonus of little
‘life lessons’ that helped numerous young
women transform themselves into accomplished
home makers.
More than anything else, never insecure
about sharing her vast knowledge of
these domestic arts; Aunty Jessie was
happiest when sharing the most guarded
secrets of her skills and capabilities.
Dear Reader,
Mid June normally sees a change of
weather - with drizzles soon turning to
lashing rain. Yes, Bandra - Khar - Santacruz
gets wet, yet people do all that they want
to do. Life goes on. Umbrellas of different
colours, sizes and shapes are seen - as soon
as showers start. The change to cooler temperatures,
with windy outdoors and darker
days, sets the scene for romance.
But are romantic rains, romantic for
everyone?
Those with cosy homes that are wellstocked,
surely see a rainy day as the right
time to keep indoors - with a hot beverage,
snacks and sharing food with family and
friends, listening to their favourite music or
watching a movie. Great time for bonding -
warming old friendships and starting new
ones.
But for those unfortunate to live with
leaky roofs - or no roof at all; this is terror
time. Dark clouds gathering gets them
frightened. And... we have a lot of people
here facing such a situation. The recent
‘Khar Carnage’ reported in this issue is an
unimaginable case of people losing their
home & belongings, within minutes. Now,
without a roof - what is their shelter from
the sun and rains? - and how long can they
live on the mercy of others? Knowing the
rainy season is coming soon, how heartless
can the perpetrators be?
TERROR
AT NOON
CONTD. FROM PAGE 1
TESTIMONIES:
• A 14-years old girl
had her hair pulled
badly by women
cops and was so
traumatized that
she had to be hospitalised
in Holy
Family Hospital -
needing a drip. Her
school uniform and books and important
prelim papers are missing.
• Harban Singh
Arora who had a
jeans shop for the
past 12 years, lost
cash, furniture &
material worth
around 5 lakhs, besides
having no
business now. He
wonders about his survival and future.
• Iqbal Patel, who
was born here, told
us that Darisa
Builders had
bought the property
in 1992. In
1996, they were
told that this is a
slum and as such
will be developed. In 2005, they put a proposal
to the SRA. In 2007, there was a survey.
When he enquired what was the status
in 2011, he got no answer. Some signatures
were taken and some forged. Through RTI,
he realised that signatures were obtained,
although the concerned people were already
dead. This gaothan land was passed
by SRA, with exchange of money.
• Another young girl whose 3 generations
lived here, was hurt by cops, then taken
Over 240 police staff gather at KES Pupil School to demolish and dishouse 20 families at Fernandes Chawl
and detained in Pupils School on S.V. Road,
till evening. Most of her belongings are either
robbed or buried in the rubble. Her
daily roza is on the rubble - her former
home. She wonders how the builder got
police protection for the demolition, when
they (Khar Police) have filed a forgery case
against her (builder).
• Mary D’Mello, a
74 year old female
resident who was
totally traumatized
by the sudden
demolition
told us, “I never
thought that this
would happen. I
am staying with supporters now. What will
happen in the future is a big question.
Leading the way
for justice is 48
year old Anita
Pinto who is on a
‘fast unto death’ -
to get justice for all
affected by the “illegal
demolition”.
She told us, “Darisa
Builders have forged documents. We are
running from pillar to post, but the government,
SRA, Deputy Collector Kalambe, Police
authorities, etc. are all involved in this
case – and no one is listening. High power
HPC has told SRA Chief Aseem Gupta to review
this, but he did not – telling us to go to
the High Court. The High Court order has
mentioned that as per the LOI’s (Letter of
Intent) terms and conditions, not to move
ahead. But they by-passed the High Court
order and illegally demolished everything
we had.
They detained my husband and me.
Around 300 police came and dishoused 20
tenants. Police robbed all our gold jewellery,
money, TVs, iPads, etc. What they
could not rob was crushed in the rubble. I
don’t know how to start all over again,
without a house. In the monsoon, and
Ramzan (many affected are Muslim), they
have done this with no agreements. She
(the builders) have told them to just put us
on the road – and automatically we will fall
on our knees. She has managed to connive
with all the police, right from DCP, ACP,
SRA, Collector, Politicians, etc. - and get the
demolition done.
If I don’t get my demand fulfilled - i.e.
change of developer, I will not give up my
part. I will give up my life. If I die, this story
will not end - somebody will come in my
place. The builder’s LOI is cancelled. The
IOA (Intimation of Approval) is cancelled.
Police have proved forgery. A charge sheet
has been filed (on the builder) and
she is out on anticipatory bail.
She is a fraud builder. Everywhere
her projects are
stalled. Her Citadel building
in Chuim is stalled –
and people are out on
the road. Then, in Mona
Apartments, Vakola –
people have been
cheated. In this property,
she has taken money from
people even before anything
has come up. Even in Goa, she has
sold 10 flats to 30 people and was behind
bars in Arpora Police Station, Anjuna,
Calangute. She should be booked.
Deputy Collector Sandeep Kalambe
should be booked, because he had a transfer
on 9th June, so he made haste to demolish
our structures on the 8th – because he
was paid a huge amount. He came personally
for the demolition - and when Aftab
Siddique (ALM 144) questioned him who
would develop as the present developer’s
IOA stands cancelled and the LOI is not
valid now. He answered her that he did not

“If this can happen here
to a mixed community, who
are living in a gaothan area - it
sets a precedence. So, in the
near future - this can happen
to other gaothans too.”

care who develops, but the demolition will
happen.
We have proof (photos & videos) of this
brutal police action. They did not detain us
in the Police Station – but took us to KES
Pupils School, where our mobiles were
confiscated. Police started beating children.
They filed charges (non-bailable offence)
against the men who were picked up from
their houses. However, on the basis of photographs,
we got bail.
My message to people: If you
have a similar problem and
keep quiet - remember,
today it is us and tomorrow
it could be you on the
road. So, please be united
and support us. This is
the fourth case - the first
three were Pereira Wadi,
Patel Compound, Daulat
Nagar. These people did
not raise their voice - they
just surrendered and today are
on the road. It will not be easy for
them to get Fernandes Chawl.
Today we own nothing. Our support
comes only from good neighbours. Shamin
Quereshi has given me this bed sheet and
the clothes I am wearing now. Someone
gave us this bed, mattress and pillow. This
large umbrella has been given by Aftab Siddique,
whose support is solid. Police continued
to harass us here - but were fired by
our supporters. Our other supporters are
some NGOs, Pathanji and Sachin Nirupam,
along with Baba Siddique and Asif Zakaria
- who are just a phone call away.”
We at Bandra Buzz caught up with our Corporator,
Asif Zakaria, in his office to learn
about an exciting, new development called
The Carter Road Beach Project. It is something
that the residents of Bandra will appreciate
as well as visitors from around.
Read on to find out more…
What is the Carter Road Beach project
all about?
It’s a very small project. You know, Bandra
doesn’t have any sandy beach; there’s the
Chimbai beach but that has a lot of dirt and
filth and isn’t too clean. Besides that, we
don’t have any other sandy beach except
for Carter road; behind the Amphitheatre
there is a small section of sandy beach.
Fishermen use it to park their boats in the
monsoons. That being said, I had submitted
a proposal to the corporation so that
maybe we could put it to more use, for the
public at large. The amphitheatre and the
Carter Road Promenade are frequented by
a lot of people, every day. What we’ve
planned, is to provide some basic spot facilities
for kids where we are installing solar
lights & I have already got sanction for it
and the work will start very soon.
Besides that, we intend to have Beach
Volleyball where we put up the poles and
youngsters or kids come with their own
nets and play games. We are also planning
on having Beach Cricket where we will put
up a mat and people can bring in their own
stumps and play. Sand pits are also planned
for small kids. So it’s a very simple plan
which I have proposed to the corporation
and also submitted a plan to have a movable
stand so that people who come there soon season so we won’t be able to do that which is exactly behind the Amphitheatre. maintaining it becomes easier since it
or students, can sit and watch the game. I but post monsoon we can start Beach Volleyball,
Beach Cricket etc.
no rocks. It is clean, but you know there are use it consciously, maintenance will be
That is the only part that contains sand and comes to the public eye. If we are able to
have submitted the proposal to the corporation,
the commissioner as well and I am
a lot of stones and garbage and a lot of debris.
We will clean that once and for all and
much easier.
hopeful that in the coming days we should What is the target area on which the
get a sanction and we should be able to Beach Project will be constructed? will try to put it to use. Once residents start
Social Activist
Aftab Siddique experienced
the Khar
demolitions first
hand - pinched,
scratched and
bleeding, she was
dragged into a police
van and detained
in KES Pupils School, from 1pm till
about 7pm. In her testimony, she describes
her horror hours in ‘hell’.
She told us, “The whole project is a
fraud. When the demolition was happening,
none of our NGO’s, activists & elected
representatives came to reach out to these
affected people - who just did not know
what to do. The authorities seemed to be so
well controlled by our politicians, that
everybody spoke similarly.
The demolition created havoc, like a violent
storm. I call them a ‘gang’ of policemen
- not like they were on ‘bandobast’.
They were all so well trained. They knew
what they had to do, who they had to fix
up, who they had to pick up. Even bystanders
were picked up & assaulted. Even
children were picked up & taken for detention.
To see such a thing happen in the
heart of the city is like history (in the making).
If this can happen here to a mixed
community, who are living in a gaothan
area - it sets a precedence. So, in the near
future - this can happen to other gaothans
too. If our local representatives (MLA & MP)
do not come forward & say that this is
wrong & needs to be rectified, rather than
calling the IT group of people to oppose us,
saying we are doing wrong; then you can
imagine that for the next three years, we
are nowhere. This IT group are half-learned
people - ‘neem hakeem’. They are not even
aware of the facts, what really happened.
What happened at the site was unbelievable
- something we have never seen,
only heard. I just asked the authorities:
Who is going to develop? Since the IOA is
not there & no call is taken. Nobody had an
answer. Then all belongings were stolen -
as 14 people were detained. The SRA called
for a tempo. People thought that the chawl
residents were just transporting their belongings
& moving out - not realizing that
it was the authorities who were taking all
the valuables. I don’t know where it is gone.
A hunger strike was observed by Anita Pinto for 5 days to protest against the illegal demolotion done at Fernandes Chawl
To describe how I was taken into the van -
I can only say that the police take robbers
with much more respect. We (including minors)
were literally dragged, pinched (she
shows us the scar on her wrist) & assaulted.
I pointed out to the ACP... about my open
wound on my hand & swollen leg, knees &
arms injured. Because of the dragging by
cops, I could not lift up my arm for two
days. They did not want to do medicals, as
the case would go against them.
We met our MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar
three days back. We told him this was
wrong, this was done in connivance - & it
was programmed - right from the collector,
to the police & the SRA. This was video
recorded, so if we were wrong - he could
easily correct us.
If an illegal building like Campa Cola
gets a stay - and a hearing from the Hon.
CM, why does my MLA not want him (CM)
to know what is happening in his (MLA)
constituency. Something which is so clear
- he should be proud and say, yes, I have
done work for my people. I have been asking
him (MLA) from March to arrange a
meeting with the CM as he is one man who
is very transparent in giving a judgement.
Looking at the situation in Fernandes
Chawl - if this is the scenario of the government
that we have to work with, I do not
think that any common man stands a
chance to approach any authority for relief,
help or justice. Imagine, the very people
who are supposed to maintain law and
order, are themselves breaking it. So, where
do people go? Everywhere, senseless
power is being used. Police are torturing us
physically & mentally.
In this Fernandes Chawl, a lady died
(couple of months back), 3 young girls collapsed
and valuables lost. Imagine the
trauma. Now they are without a house -
and even if they get one, what will they
have to put into it? If something like this
happens and if this continues, then I do not
know what era we have come to.”
Aftab concluded, “What ‘change’ are we
talking about?” To watch the testimonies
visit bandrabuzz.com/khar-carnage.html
FLASHBACK:
In 2011, a probe initiated by the Khar police,
on a request by SRA Authorities, revealed
that a forgery was done to obtain the LOI &
IOA. An IOA is valid for 4 years. As it was
obtained in 2011, it is not valid now. In spite
of this, there were minor demolitions of
around 7 tenants on April 21st and 26th this
year - when a senior citizen has allegedly
died of tension & fear.
TODAY’S REALITY:
The cross that was demolished (probably
not on purpose) along with the chawl, was
put up the next day by the local MLA Adv.
Ashish Shelar. However, the human
tragedy was not taken care of by the authorities
resulting in small children, young
adults and even elderly men and women,
just hoping against hope - left to fend for
themselves in the sun and rain - on a public
road. How heartless and cruel can we be?
In all fairness, we would want to allow the
concerned developers, Police, SRA Officials,
Local Elected Representatives and
the Collector to express their view points –
so that the general public gets to know
their side of the story too. As we lacked
time to get it in this issue, we invite them
to please contact us on 9820783616 and
Carter Road could soon have a sandy beach
