welcome
Dear Parents
Welcome to our Summer 2016 edition. With holidays upon us
and exams done and dusted, it’s time to grab your sunglasses and
head outside with a glass of Rosé! (Special wine offer page 14)
In this edition we celebrate the teenage years. We have expert
advice from Janey Downshire, the guru on teenage issues. We
look at ways of tackling changing skin and ideas to transform
your kid’s bedroom from ‘sweet’ to suitably ‘hip’. We also offer
tips on cooking with kids and how to make the most of the
summer festivals with teenagers in tow.
We also follow up on our charitable initiatives, including
Operation Oscar, Walk With Me and our exciting charity
cricket campaign. (page 29)
In addition to this, there is a comprehensive directory of useful
businesses and services, all of whom have helped raise funds
directly for our member schools. Once again we’d like to take
this opportunity to thank all our advertisers, schools and parents
for their continued support.
As always it has been an incredibly busy term for everyone.
We now have 50 member schools and over 32,000 regular parent
visitors from over 265 different schools, which means your free
parent notices are being seen by an ever-increasing audience.
If you would like to join us, please visit www.schoolnotices.co.uk
to benefit from our exclusive member offers and to gain access to
our fantastic Summer Activities List. There is something there
for everyone.
Finally, have a wonderful, happy summer and let’s hope the sun
shines!
With best wishes
DOWNE HOUSE
EDUCATION
DUKE OF EDINBURGH
BY CHELTENHAM LADIES COLLEGE
“A full boarding school turning out delightful, principled, courteous and
able girls who go on to make a significant contribution to the world. As
one parent said, ‘We couldn’t be more thrilled.’“ The Good Schools Guide
An Independent Boarding School for girls aged 11 - 18
Open Days: 26 Nov 2016, 21 Jan and 18 Mar 2017
Please contact registrar@downehouse.net to book an appointment.
This year, the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)
Award, the world’s leading youth achievement
award, is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
The award aims to help students gain new
skills and explore new territories, and it is
well-known for the challenging and rewarding
expeditions required of the participants at
every level (Bronze, Silver and Gold).
Girls at Cheltenham Ladies’ College have
recently been on expeditions across the UK,
as well as in the French Alps and Madagascar.
Alex McHattie, a CLC student who
completed her Gold expedition last summer,
recalled:
“As I left for Madagascar I had no idea
what to expect. I was embarking on the
adventure of a lifetime. I saw views like no
other, met people who are beyond admirable
and I learnt so much about myself. DofE
showed me just how far I could push myself
and what I was capable of doing.”
Along with the expeditions, the awards
also require participants to learn a new
skill, undertake a physical activity and take
part in volunteering. Many schools provide
opportunities to help participants with these
activities.
At Cheltenham Ladies’ College, the girls are
supported through the school’s Community
Links volunteering programme and undertake
a range of activities, from teaching languages
and reading at local primary schools to
helping at local animal shelters. CLC
girls alone undertake over 3,200 hours of
volunteering each year. If schools across the
country dedicate time and resources to these
outstanding awards, then we can look forward
to another 60 years of a thriving DofE scheme
that supports the next generation of leaders to
broaden their horizons and improve the lives
of those around them.
WORK EXPERIENCE - MAKING IT WORK
Tinker Tailor is a personal development
and careers consultancy, founded in 2008 to
supplement the advice offered in Independent
Schools. It targets 16-25 year olds and
uses it’s extensive network and experience
across university admissions, graduate &
professional-level recruitment to prepare
pupils for life beyond education.
Does work experience count? Yes. Work
experience offers pupils an opportunity to
demonstrate proactivity and to develop an
early understanding for the huge range of jobs
available. At graduate level, internships have
become the new interview, allowing employers
to establish a “good fit” before offering a job.
Two weeks beforehand: Ask yourself and
them “How can I best prepare?” to show
proactivity and professionalism.
When you get there: Get involved, be curious
and speak to everyone. Work out how the
different parts of the business work together.
Think about which functions your skills and
personality suit best.
Make it a commercial experience. What
products/services do they sell? Who are their
clients and competitors and what is their
business strategy and what margins do they
operate on?
Record everything. Write notes on
everything so that you can refer to them later.
What did you learn? Record skills learnt,
gaps identified, experiences enjoyed and how
it met your expectations.
What did you contribute? Was there a valueexchange
for the opportunity offered to you?
This helps prepare future CV’s, personal
statements, application forms and to answer
interview questions.
Immediately afterwards: Follow up with a
thank you and request a reference. Say you
would like to be considered in the future. Start
a professional network. Create a LinkedIn
profile.
Good alternatives to work experience:
Voluntary work and Saturday jobs are highly
regarded by admission tutors and graduate
recruiters. Or organize informational
interviews with your contacts that are useful
to develop your experience and network.
ANY EXPERIENCE IS BETTER
THAN NONE!
TO ADVERTISE IN OUR
WINTER EDITION
email: info@schoolnotices.co.uk
SERVES 4
2 eggs
100ml half-fat crème fraiche
80g soft, rindless goat’s cheese
3 tbsp fresh tarragon and parsley, chopped
50g chopped frozen spinach,
defrosted and drained
500g large, waxy potatoes, such
as Queen Charlotte, washed and
sliced as thick as a pound coin
40g mature cheddar, grated
Salt and pepper
Preheat the oven to 160˚C/325˚F/gas mark.
Beat the eggs in a bowl with the crème
fraîche and goat’s cheese, season well and stir
in the herbs and spinach.
Generously butter a deep spring-based cake
tin (approx 20cm in diameter) and line base
and sides with greaseproof paper. Spread a
quarter of the egg mixture over the bottom
and cover evenly with a tight layer of sliced
potatoes. Season with salt and pepper.
Add another layer of the egg mixture and,
again, a layer of potatoes and seasoning.
Keep layering, then finish by sprinkling the
cheddar across the top.
Place the terrine in a deep roasting tin and
pour hot water around it until it is about
halfway up the side of the cake tin. Cover the
roasting tin with foil and bake for 75 mins.
Remove the foil and turn up the heat for
about 15 minutes to brown the cheddar on
the top.
Leave to cool for 15 minutes, then release
the terrine from the tin and remove the
greaseproof paper. Cut into slices and enjoy!
Kids and teenagers are passionate, have
inquisitive minds, sensitive taste buds and a
natural desire to do new things. These are all
brilliant qualities to have in a kitchen! I see it
as our responsibility to help them maximise
their natural desires and explore the delights
of food.
It’s important to let our children experiment
and make mistakes. Let them over whisk the
cream, burn the gravy, hard boil an egg, forget
the baked potatoes. Kids rise to challenges
and long to show us that they can be trusted.
If you teach them how to use a knife and
gently guide them as they get used to it, then
you must trust in their natural instinct for selfpreservation.
Stir fry is a great place to start with kids. They
get to handle a little meat, peel chop and prep
a variety of veg and cook using just one pan!
Check out my recipes on my website for some
ideas.
COOKING WITH KIDS
BY FLORA GORDON CLARK
Kids and teens love being together and my
courses enable them to acquire useful new
culinary skills in a relaxed and fun home
environment. The simple ethos at Flora’s
Kitchen is to learn to cook by getting involved
with anything and everything – they will
learn by doing the work.
I have launched a new series of courses called...
Teen Cooking (aged 14-17) teaching different types of cuisine from around the world.
Junior Cooking (aged 9-13) which has been hugely popular for kids learning the basics.
There are many things that we associate with
being a teenager: first love, first driving lesson
and for many of us, our first outbreak of spots.
What is acne?
Theresa Fleetwood
from Andresa Skin
Health Clinic shares
her Top Tips...
Acne (‘Acne Vulgaris’) is a chronic skin
condition which can be painful, debilitating
and unsightly, affecting a teenager’s or adult’s
confidence.
There are many causes of acne including
teenage hormone surges, stress, poor nutrition,
resulting in deficiency of vital nutrients such as
essential fatty acids. Also the use of ineffective
skincare products can make the skin worse by
simultaneously congesting and dehydrating it.
What can be done to control acne?
For more information on how to manage acne, call Andresa on
01635 800183 or visit www.andresa.co.uk
Acne cannot be cured but it can be effectively
managed through a nutritious diet, the use
of effective skincare products at home and
professional skin treatments. I recommend
the following:
1) Drink 2 litres of water each day, eat a
balanced, alkalizing diet and take essential
fatty acid supplements.
2) Cleanse the skin with a good pH-balanced
cleanser like Clinogen Oxypeel twice a day
and apply a mask weekly at home. Products
personally prescribed by a skin clinic like the
DMK or DermaQuest ranges will be more
effective.
3) Book in for an Acne Paramedical Treatment
Programme which uses natural botanical
enzymes to gently remove the dead cell
build-up. This stimulates lymphatic drainage,
helping to reduce inflammation and infection.
Does a better understanding of
this period of child development
help adults better manage the
inevitable highs and lows?
Puberty is natural and unavoidable - much
as parents may dread the accompanying
trademark behaviours which hijack your sweet
young child. Changing hormones mean your
baby is becoming an adult and scarily, she (or
he) might not even have hit their teens yet.
A few generations back, your
adolescent might already have been
married off during their teens – but
no longer. Recent cultural shifts
have created an extended period
of child rearing, whereby today’s
teenagers are often dependent on
their parents well into their 20s.
This produces an environment
which could prolong child-like
behaviour if we are not careful.
TEENAGERS!
BOOK
OFFER
£5
Added to this is the marked rise in mental
health issues. How do we work out what is and
isn’t ‘normal’ teenage behaviour? The brain
moulds to experience, which means that what
children do during these years is vital. For
example, digital technology may be a negative
influence on mental health. It is crucial that
parents arm themselves with information
in order to strike the right balance. A quiet
well behaved child ‘safe’ in their bedroom but
constantly online, for example, should ring
alarm bells.
Being informed and proactive is
vital to supporting good mental
health. Knowing the worrying
signals helps to work out when
to step in. We would encourage
all parents to access the wealth of
available information out there,
via courses and books, so that you
feel informed and confident in
your approach. The teenage years
should and can be a positive time.
experiences – The Police & Thin Lizzy
at Reading sometime around 1978 and
The Rolling Stones at Knebworth a bit earlier.
I started Cornbury in 2004 to create a gentle
little festival for those that love music and
I’m proud of what we’ve achieved over the
last twelve years. A range of artists from
Joe Cocker to Amy Winehouse, Keane to
Humphrey Lyttelton have featured at
Cornbury and we’ve developed a reputation
as a well-run and safe family event – a village
fete with a rock ‘n’ roll twist sums it up pretty
well. It’s a great starter festival for adults and
kids alike. My daughter Rose has come since
she was a month old and now calls it Daddy’s
Big Party!
8TH, 9TH, 10TH JULY 2016
As a guru on festivals I’ve come up
with my own list of top tips!
1) Get your tickets early and really
explore where you want to be and what
options the various packages include.
2) Pack carefully – you should always have the
following festival essentials: water bottle, wet
wipes, lip balm/moisturiser, strepsils/throat
lozenges, breath freshner, baby powder, ear
plugs, nurofen, hair gel, sun cream, hat, loose
fitting clothes, sun glasses and floaty light
scarf (you can always find a use for it).
3) Have an easy meeting place for your kids
and if they have phones make sure they have
useful apps to find you and their friends.
4) Finally download the festival apps – they
are brilliant and keep you in the loop!
FAMILY JOURNEYS THROUGHOUT
THE WORLD
‘ Darling, see
you at the
Full Moon
Party…’
The days of packing your child off on a gap
year with little expectation of hearing from
them for months at a time are long gone.
Modern technology means parents can
now keep track of where their children are
and what they are up to at any given time.
With this comes the inevitable temptation
to meet up in exotic locations and share in
the experience. We are seeing an increasing
trend in family holidays arranged to coincide
with the itinerary of travelling offspring.
‘I was having the most fantastic time backpacking
through South East Asia with my friends when
mum and dad said they were coming out to
meet me in Thailand.
The thought of them reliving their apparently ‘wild
“ They will be truly grateful for a
Not only is it a wonderful opportunity to
catch up on your backpacker’s escapades but
they will be truly grateful for a respite from
the character building deprivations of budget
travel. Spend quality time hearing about their
adventures, feed them up, and send them to
the spa for a good scrub before sending them
on their way happy in the knowledge that
they are having the time of their lives.
youth’ and visions of them crashing the Full Moon
Party filled me with horror. I had not realised how
exhausting backpacking was until I was with my
family and able to relax in luxury. It was heaven
finally having some privacy, a comfortable bed and
a decent shower. I ate, slept, shopped, went to the
spa with mum and finally got all my washing done
– and it cost me less than my daily budget!’
Moving from crib to first-bed to bunks to a
full-sized bed, childrens’ bedrooms change
a lot as they grow up. This becomes more
challenging once they move into their teenage
years and their room becomes their universe.
GET CREATIVE
As your teenager starts developing their own
sense of style, encourage them to get creative
and have their say by thinking about what
hobbies and colours they’d like to incorporate.
MIX PATTERNS AND TEXTURES
Think large, bold, colourful and graphic.
Mixing colours, patterns and textures as well
as layering and combining shapes will ensure
a less grown-up or formal approach.
MAKE IT COLOURFUL
Follow the 123 Formula - 1. Choose one wall
colour from the light palette 2. Chose two
colours from the bright or bold palette 3. Use
these colours on accent walls or furnishing
and don’t overlook ceilings and flooring.
SIGNATURE INTERIORS
GO CLASSIC
Buy quality, adult sized, classic furniture and
beds now. This will save you money in the
long term. Use on-trend items to accessorize
around your classic investment pieces.
STEP UP THE STORAGE
Neat and tidy is not likely to be on the tip of
your teenager’s tongue, but you can help with
this on-going battle by providing storage
units, cupboards, drawers, hanging rails,
hooks, boxes and baskets.
INTERIORS
PROPERTY
CELEBRATE
Display things with pride which are personal
to the teenager. Photos and keepsakes as well
as trophies, certificates and art celebrate their
individual style and achievements.
The new tribes moving to a village near you
Five new village tribes have been identified in a new report by property adviser
Strutt & Parker. ‘Housing Futures: The Village Revival’ investigates the emergence
of a new creeping trend in the property market – the desire to move back to rural
locations – and uncovers some new and interesting housing personas that are
growing in the UK and moving to a village near you:
The Downtons are an influential family with substantial income living in the grandest village
house. While the most prestigious house in the village would once have been owned by the
local squire, many of these properties have now been acquired by buyers using property
equity to purchase a rural idyll.
property search service, with
advice on all aspects of finding
Elderflowers are healthy and active retirees who have assets, including their own home
and pension income. Elderflowers have either lived in the village all their lives or are empty
nesters looking to move into a village house that suits their changing needs.
and purchasing residential and
development property.
Peter was an estate agent for 32
years selling prestigious properties in
London and the South East. He now
uses his knowledge and experience
to find properties often not on the
market, and to facilitate a smooth
and successful transaction, saving
you time and money.
Peter is the father of two
Old Eastbournians and one pupil
currently at Eastbourne College.
Rusticarians are entrepreneurs and creatives who can bring dynamism to the village
economy. These diverse countryside dwellers embrace new approaches to work and
lifestyle. For example, rural areas have the highest rate of homeworkers – 33% compared
to 12% in urban areas.
Rubies – or Rural Newbies – are families who are keen to move to a village location to
raise their children. This group of predominantly younger families supports the local school,
uses community facilities for classes and leisure facilities, and sustains local shops.
The Onesies are single-person households which are growing across all age groups in the
UK at a rate ten times faster than the general population. About 3.8 million older people
are sole occupiers and 70% of these are women.
It’s been yet another busy term fundraising
within our schools! In our last magazine we
highlighted the incredibly brave and inspiring
journey of Oscar Bearman (Cheam). Oscar has
now undergone several gruelling operations
to correct his skull and his contemporaries at
school have raised an astonishing £52,899.62
Operation Oscar on Facebook has gone viral
with messages from Prince Harry and Bear
Grylls to name just a few. If you would like to
Some of the walkers for Action Against Cancer
The WalkWithMe campaign
is another success story. 220
people walked the 26 mile
route starting and finishing at
Moulsford School. A staggering
£95,000 (and rising) has been raised to help
Professor Justin Stebbing and his team at
Hammersmith Hospital for Action Against
Cancer. The inspiration behind the walk
Olivia Alderson (a mother at Mouslford)
continues to fight cancer under the care of
Professor Stebbing. If you would like to
have also been running our
Charity Cricket Campaign
to supply unused and
An enormous thank you to all our enrolled
schools that have taken part – a signed mini
bat from the legendary Desmond Haynes is on
its way to you! All our participating schools
will now be entered into our prize draw to
win a master class with the man himself - the
