Today most schools understand the benefits
of teaching creative problem solving and
encouraging imagination in their students.
But this wasn’t always the case. Were you
ever told that art wasn’t a serious subject, or
advised to take a career path which was secure
and away from the creative sector? Did you
excel in art and design or graphics and textiles,
but suppressed your creativity in favour of a
sensible job? Maybe now is the right time
in your life to do something about it and be
creative?
Here at KLC School of Design, career
changers made up over 60% of our student
body in the September 2015 intake. We
had mature students from a huge variety of
backgrounds – including marketing, finance,
healthcare and recruitment – all of whom
had taken the bold decision to embrace their
inherent creativity, follow their passion and
retrain as a designer.
Maybe with your kids back at school or
moving onto senior education, now is the
time for you to do something positive and
life changing. Going back to the classroom
can bring up all sorts of conflicting emotions,
but at KLC we put our trainees’ needs at
the very heart of the school, with a range
of interior and garden design qualification
courses and study methods to suit everyone.
Not to mention our unrivalled Careers Service
and extensive network of contacts within the
interior and garden design industry.
TO ADVERTISE IN OUR
SUMMER EDITION
email: info@schoolnotices.co.uk
REVISING FOR exams can be stressful and
tiring. But guess what? Your brain works best
when it is relaxed and fresh. So here are a few
of my top tips for making sure your brain is
in the fittest shape possible for the upcoming
exam season.
SCREENS: Do not use a screen-based
computer or mobile phone for at least two
hours before you are due to go to sleep. I’m
sorry to say that means no screens after 8pm.
All kinds of research suggests that the blue
light from all emitting screens disrupts normal
sleep patterns and this can impair cognitive
performance.
VISUALISATION: If you have long names
or lists of dates, quotes or other things you
need to remember then try to make an
unlikely visual connection with
the word, date or quote. The more
unlikely and the more visual the
connection the more easily your
brain will be able to recall the
fact. This is the system used in
ancient Greece called mnemonics
and for many people it can work
brilliantly. For example, if you
needed to remember the name
of an astronomer called Edwin
Hubble you might associate him
with a balloon which is in the shape of a
bubble which rhymes with Hubble.
CONTEXT: Your brain works best with
broad perspectives rather than just a bundle
of disjointed fragments of facts. Try to
understand the reasons behind things rather
than just the facts that explain them. Always
ask WHY not just WHAT - this deeper level
of understanding will make the information
you want to learn stick much better in your
mind.
Christopher Lloyd has launched a new
‘What on Earth?’ wallbook this month called
The Wallbook Timeline of British History,
developed in conjunction with the National
Trust. A 2 metre timeline, containing over
1,000 captions and illustrations, takes readers
on a visually exhilarating
journey through the ages:
From the dinosaurs, to the
Battle of Hastings, Henry
VIII’s Reformation, Oliver
Cromwell’s Civil War, George
Stephenson’s Rocket, the
invention of the internet by
beyond! A fantastic supportive
Imagine a 75,000sq.ft child-size city where
young people are in charge! It is the aim of
KidZania London to broaden horizons so that
children can explore, aspire and begin to write
their own narrative of the possible. The business
model came to the UK because there is a
clear need for what KidZania provides: learning
by doing within the context of careers
awareness and raising aspirations.
As a teacher and someone who has been involved
with children’s education all my life,
this was too exciting an opportunity to miss:
finally there was a chance to bridge the educational
gap between theory and practice - between
learning and doing! KidZania for me
provides purpose to learning, to answer ‘why’
questions and to enable children to write their
narrative of the possible.
A COLLECTION OF
CONTEMPOR ARY
JEWELLERY
IN GOLD AND SILVER
ELEGANT AND EASY TO WEAR
KidZania is the domain of all children aged
4 to 14 who want to join us. At KidZania the
children are in charge of their own learning
journey, as we encourage world-of-work related
independent learning through active
participation and role-play. Through role-play
children will instinctively grasp that learning
is tangible and its outcomes have a purpose
and a reality - and that it can be unending fun.
At KidZania the grown-ups are there to be
seen and not heard, after all, this is KIDzania!
KidZania provides children and their parents,
families, schools and communities with a safe,
unique, and realistic educational environment
that allows young people to do what comes
naturally to them: imagining and role-playing
traditionally adult activities and experiences -
and as we know...
“EXPERIENCE IS
EVERYTHING!”
Dust off your dreams for 2016
We all have dreams. Many
of us have left them behind or
given up believing that we have
any chance of fulfilling them
now. Once, we had exciting
plans for our future, visions of
what our lives would look like
and how we could make a difference
or grow, whether in our
professional lives, in our relationships
or simply in attaining
personal goals.
Yet for many of us, day-to-day
responsibilities pushed these
dreams to the back of our
minds and we have forgotten what they were
about or how they felt.
When I started training as a coach the first
question I was asked was not “What do you
do?” but “What is your dream?” I was taken
aback momentarily and then I saw one of my
dreams clearly in front of me, as familiar as
it was 20 years ago, and I honestly
didn’t know why I hadn’t
pursued it.
Well, I do know why. Life got
in the way, all those little urgent
things to do got bigger
and bigger and time passed as
it does for all of us. But I felt
at that moment I had let myself
down and I wanted to do something
about it. I felt I owed it
to myself.
To improve or develop a particular
area of one’s life, it is
important to focus on it completely - give it
the attention it needs, to make it your priority.
This focus will create the opportunity for
change. It’s not always what is urgent that
should be at the top of our lists, but what is
important to us. By reprioritising our lives,
it is possible to reignite those long-forgotten
dreams. It is never too late...!
My family went to Italy last summer and
we had a fantastic time. Our guide in Rome
made it easy to imagine what it was like in
ancient times. One of my favourite activities
was taking a Segway around the Borghese
Gardens and into the centre of Rome.
We learned how to use swords
like real gladiators and had a
tournament which was great fun
We all loved the Gladiator School. They
worked us really hard and even made my Mum
do press-ups in the dirt! The assault course
was no walk in the park either but it made us
laugh a lot. We learned how to use swords like
real gladiators and had a tournament which
was great fun. They even gave us all gladiator
names - my Dad’s was Maximus Fallovicus!
We flew in a helicopter to Pompeii which was
awesome and our day there was one of our
highlights. It was very sad though because
we could see where the people died when
Vesuvius erupted in AD79 and covered
Pompeii in ash. We saw the casts of bodies
lying in the streets and you could still see some
They made my
Mum do pressups
in the dirt
of their expressions
as they tried to
escape. One of the
coolest things we
saw was a doorstep mosaic of a huge dog,
like an ancient ‘beware the dog’ sign! There
was also the AD79 fast food restaurant with
all the cooking pots lying around. I will never
forget it because our guide was amazing and
made it feel like we had gone back in time.
These are only a few of the things that we
experienced and I can’t wait to go back but
best of all we ate pizza, pasta and fresh gelato
every day!
CHARITY CRICKET CAMPAIGN
YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A MASTERCLASS
with Desmond Haynes
Tommy Arnott, Oscar Bearman, Jonno Balding.
Raising money for Face Value at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
LET’S HELP OTHERS
Donate your used cricket kit... and help
underprivileged children pursue their dreams!
School Notices are delighted to support Desmond
Haynes in his capacity as Minister for Sport and
his Charitable Foundation in Barbados. We are
inviting our enrolled schools to collect
Bring your unwanted cricket
kit into school by
Monday 6th June 2016
All participating schools
will receive a signed bat
by Desmond Haynes
and donate any old or outgrown children’s cricket
kit which will then be sent out to under privileged
children in the West Indies to help pursue their
cricketing dreams.
One lucky school
(picked out of a hat)
will win a masterclass
with Desmond Haynes
(Summer 2017)
In a career spanning 20 years, amassing over 26,000 first class runs, Desmond Haynes was one of
the World’s finest opening batsman for the fearsome West Indies team of the 80’s and 90’s.
Here at School Notices we love to hear about
our enrolled schools’ charitable causes and
initiatives. We have amazing parents and
children who all go out of their way to help
raise awareness of their particular causes.
Very often, these fund raising ventures
originate from a personal involvement, in turn
making them even more meaningful. Nothing
touches us more than when children choose to
do something to help others who they know
are suffering.
This term we are delighted to outline some of
the many wonderful and inspiring charitable
events that are taking place amongst our
enrolled schools.
Oscar Bearman aged
9 (Cheam School) was
born with Crouzon
Syndrome which stops
his scull growing properly
thereby affecting not
only his appearance, but also his breathing,
hearing and eyesight, and most importantly
the pressure on his brain. In May, Oscar is
undergoing a gruelling and risky operation to
stretch his scull. He will be in Great Ormond
Street Hospital for 6 weeks, and then getting
better for another 6 months. Under their
own initiative the boys in Oscar’s class have
organized a 5 mile sponsored walk to raise
money for ‘Face Value’ for Great Ormond
Street. If you would like to support this
wonderful walk please visit, www.justgiving.
com/awalkforoscar.
Olivia Alderson, a mother at
Moulsford Preparatory School,
was diagnosed with breast cancer
6 ½ years ago. As she continues to
fight the disease she has also been
raising money for Action against Cancer with
the help of fellow mothers. ‘Walk with Me
2016’ is a 26-mile walk along the Ridgeway
in Oxfordshire, starting and finishing at
Moulsford School. If you would like to take
part or donate to this invaluable charity please
visit www.walkwithme2016.com.
Inspired by our enrolled schools’ enthusiasm
to help others, we are delighted to announce
our own charitable campaign to help under
privileged kids in the West Indies to pursue
their cricketing dreams. Please see opposite
for more details about this exciting venture.
How to get your home ready for viewings
It takes just eight seconds
to decide whether or not
you will buy a house,
according to the latest
research. So getting
your house prepared for
those all important first
impressions is a vital step
in achieving a sale.
Guy Robinson, Head of National
Estate Agency at Strutt & Parker
gives his top tips:
Groom your garden
The front garden is often the
first thing a potential buyer will
see. Give your lawn a trim,
remove any unsightly weeds,
ensure fences and gates are
in good order and put out any
garden furniture.
Adding curb appeal
From getting your windows
cleaned to hanging flower
baskets, these simple touches
will make visitors feel excited
about your home as they walk
through the door.
Cleanliness is godliness
A clean and presentable
house is a must, and a fresh
lick of paint can create a
whole new feel. Professional
cleaners can be well worth the
investment.
AGENCY
Smelling of roses
The smell of a home is exceptionally
important to prospective buyers.
If the smell of freshly baked bread
is easier said than done, scented
candles and fresh flowers are an
easy alternative.
Lighten up
Clean lights and replace burnt-out
bulbs to avoid dull rooms. In each
area of your home, check if an
extra lamp is needed to ensure
every space is well lit.
Go neutral
Rein in any niche styles and, if
you’re thinking of adding a splash
of paint, stick to natural hues. White
linen and towels are essential.
Sellers should seize the feeling of
optimism in the air and present
their homes at their best. Whether
you’re buying or selling, for more
WHAT MAKES A GOOD
PORTRAIT OF A CHILD?
BY ROSANNA CHITTENDEN
Commissioning a portrait of your child can be an exciting but overwhelming process.
And one you want to get just right. Here are a few pointers to help you navigate the minefield.
PORTRAITS
OF YOUR CHILDREN OR PETS
SOUJATA DEVA R IS
BELGR AV I A
AGE - Children younger than four aren’t
easy to direct and their faces won’t be
formed enough. The best ages for a portrait
are probably 6 to 12. Don’t worry about any
missing teeth – they seldom show.
MEDIUM - Pastels have an immediacy that
makes them ideally suited to catch a child’s
freshness and energy – perfect for a head
and shoulders. Oils have greater longevity
and authority but are possibly more suitable
for a full-length painting where the position
or ‘attitude’ also tells a story. Only the most
skilled watercolourists can capture the
character and features of children accurately
without the portrait appearing tight and
laboured.
POSE AND APPEARANCE - Capturing
the essence of your child is key. And the
secret lies in getting the pose, ‘look’ and
expression just right. Children should like
the clothes they are wearing and be allowed
to be themselves. Informality is good and
overly coiffed hair, or a stiff, contrived pose
will make it harder to express a child’s real
character. What makes a good photograph
seldom makes a good portrait. A smile can
become very wearing in a portrait and a
child’s personality should determine whether
they are looking straight out of the picture or
somewhere else.
THE ARTIST – Word of mouth, seeing
other works by an artist and online research
should help you find a painter whose style
you like. A good artist should recognize and
understand your child’s personality and be
able to perform the alchemy of translating
this onto paper or canvas. Paying more for
a picture you will never grow tired of makes
more sense than paying less for one that never
feels ‘quite right’.
