EDUCATION
DISPATCHES FROM THE
SCHOOL TOUCHLINE
by Rebecca Chatterton
Our strong pastoral system fosters positive relationships and promotes an ethos that
values our girls as individuals while nurturing a deep sense of community.
www.sherborne.com
Teddies: working
in partnership with
our prep schools
The school touchline is a sociable place
where parents huddle together making
introductions and putting names to faces.
No child’s superb try or glorious catch is
left unnoticed – a hasty briefing by fellow
spectators guarantees that
even the parent looking
in the wrong way is able
to offer enthusiastic
congratulations to their
offspring later.
As three mothers with
nine sports-mad boys
between us, we can’t
count the hours spent
supporting our offspring.
During the cricket season
a few years ago, we discussed the fact that
our children’s obsession with their sports
didn’t end with the day’s play. If we wanted
to be part of the banter we realised we should
learn more about the sports that they loved.
It also dawned on us that watching games
would be much more enjoyable if we actually
understood them!
The idea for our ‘Mothers’ Translations’
started to take shape. It was summer so we
immersed ourselves in the peculiarities of
cricket. As we swallowed
the ‘Laws’ we decided
we didn’t want to be
the only ones with post
game opinions round the
tea urn so we produced
“Stumped by Cricket”
our first book. Filled
with easily understood
explanations and lots of
pretty illustrations, it is
now nearly 2 years old.
The excitement of the Rugby World Cup is
still palpable in our families, so we’ve turned
our attentions to rugby. Since researching
‘Rugby Tackled’ we’re holding our own on the
touchline this season. Perhaps with our book
to hand, you could too.
FASHION
BESPOKE
JEWELLERY
From
Robinson Pelham
FASHION
Jewellery should be full of
emotion and beauty, and while
you can buy beauty off the peg it is
more difficult to buy emotion.
Jewellers have short cuts for including
emotions and loved ones into pieces of
jewellery like birthstones and
zodiacs and these can be endlessly
used in subtle or obvious ways to
represent different moments and
people in pieces of Jewellery. There
can be awkward moments when
someone commissions a jewel and
realises that his eldest child is born
in November and has Topaz as
his birthstone whereas his twins,
born in April, both have diamond
as their birthstone. As jewellers
we have to play around with these
combinations and disparities so
that a piece of jewellery maintains
its beauty and also holds as much
emotion as possible. It is also key
not to make one child look more important
than any of the others, it can be a highly
political design process.
Previous commissions have included this
amazing Egg pendant. The egg itself is a
symbol of fertility, and set into the front of the
egg are the four birthstones of the children.
The back of the egg is set with the overlapping
diamond constellations of the four children.
And yet when worn it is just a beautiful piece
of jewellery.
Diamond set Constellations are a
surprisingly subtle way of representing
someone in a jewel, they can look quite
abstract, but you can extrapolate the abstract
nature of the jewel as far as you want to
go. This Ludo ring is set with a piece of
crystalline Crysoccola that was
by chance the shape of Sri Lanka,
the honeymoon destination, and
the child’s initial is built into the
shank of the ring, and yet without
the background information it is
just a stunning piece of modern
jewellery.
If the abstract approach doesn’t
chime with your taste then the
classic and more simple approach
is the way forward. Echoing
the 18th century passion for
silhouettes, and yet making them
wearable, you can have the profile
of a child made from a sheet of
gold or silver and worn around
the neck or wrist. However the easiest way
to make a parent cry good tears is to give
them a piece of jewellery with their family’s
names engraved in their own handwriting.
Handwritten engraving remains the simplest
and most effective way of personalising a
jewel, redolent of love letters, Christmas cards
and all those treasures that get lost, and yet
made permanent in gold or silver.
Tarragon pancakes with
horseradish-mustard cream,
smoked salmon & dill
Makes 60 canapes
PANCAKES
170g/6oz self-raising flour
½ tsp baking powder
1 egg
1TBS caster sugar
200ml/ 7fl oz milk
A handful of chopped tarragon
HORSERADISH-MUSTARD CREAM
300ml tub of sour cream
6tsp horseradish sauce
3tsp wholegrain mustard
225g/8oz smoked salmon
Dill sprigs
1. Put the flour, baking powder, egg, sugar
and milk in a magimix and whizz until
smooth. Pour into a bowl and stir in the
chopped tarragon.
2. If you haven’t got a magimx, sift the flour
and baking powder into a bowl, make a well
in the centre, add the egg and half of the milk,
beat to a batter. Add the remaining milk
gradually, stirring until lump-free, then add
the chopped tarragon and some seasoning.
3. Lightly oil the simmering plate of the Aga
or a frying pan. The oil should be just hazy.
Wipe any excess oil away with kitchen paper.
4. Drop the mixture on in teaspoons, spacing
them well apart. When bubbles rise to the
surface and the pancakes look dry on top,
flip over with a palette knife and cook on the
other side for a further 30 seconds or so until
golden brown and cooked through. Lift off
and place on a plate.
5. Mix the sour cream, horseradish sauce and
wholegrain mustard together. Season.
6. When the pancakes have cooled, top with
the horseradish–mustard cream, a swirl of
smoked salmon and a sprig of dill. Serve.
There is nothing like a skiing holiday!
There is something for everyone in the snow.
The exercise and fun gives a healthy glow to
even the most pallid cheeks and replaces the
ever present lure of the iPad.
However, as a parent, one can often feel a
ski holiday is more of a marathon than a rest.
Just deciding where to go can seem a daunting
task. The biggest question, especially at
Easter, is will there be enough snow? Don’t be
fixated by the height of the resort but look at
the snow record, which is much more reliable.
For children a small resort offers the chance to
be a bit more independent. For teenagers it’s
important to have a couple of bars where they
can meet friends. Whilst the big name resorts
have great boasting potential they can often
have too much apres ski on offer! Consider
options beyond the bars – is there sledging,
floodlit ice-skating, a swimming pool?
The biggest challenge with a ski holiday is
trying to keep everyone happy. For children
the most important thing is to make it FUN.
This usually involves being with other children
to joke on the chairlift and compete to make
the world’s best snowman. Also bear in
mind that children need to speak a common
language to find a partner in crime or fellow
snowball fighter. It’s miserable being the
only English speaking child in a class full of
Germans!
Naturally, it’s important for children to be
taught well and unless the teacher inspires
them and makes it fun, they tend to want
to ski with their parents. Great though
that might be, they won’t necessarily make
progress. Synchronised skiing competitions
and slalom training are great ways to learn
control and precision. Jumps can improve
balance as can skiing off piste. Making videos
can help children to see how their skiing looks
and show them where to improve. Skiing with
other children gives them healthy competition
as well as a lot of banter and after-skiing
entertainment.
Finally, one must get the kit right. A snood
is essential (whether cold or sunny) and two
pairs of gloves or mittens are a must. Give
small children mittens on a string so they
don’t lose them. Make sure ski socks fit well
and boots are properly done up. Pocket sized
sun cream is useful as is an easily accessible
energy packed snack. All-in-one ski suits and
salopettes with braces can make loo breaks a
challenge and trousers must go OUTSIDE
boots to stop snow getting in! Always dress
to be warm as there’s nothing worse than
being cold on the mountain and no quicker
way to put a child off. Finally a large glass of
schnapps is a must at the end of the day!
WINTER WARMERS
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
Our Winner: Sebastian Chapman, Age 6, Windlesham House
The winning photograph
Sebastian chapman Age 6
WINDLESHAM HOUSE
PHOTOGRAPHY
The judges were so impressed with the standard of entries they decided to select 6 runners up
to receive a book on photography for their school library. Congratulations to the following...
What a response we had to our first ever
competition! The School Notices office was
inundated with Winter Warmers photos
which frankly made our judges’s job almost
impossible. We never knew there were so
many budding photographers out there so a
big thank you goes to all who entered.
After much debate, a decision on a
winner was made and we’re delighted to
announce Sebastian Chapman, aged 6, from
Windlesham House School took the prize.
His winning photo, now the front cover of our
winter edition, is gorgeous. Congratulations
on winning £200 worth of books for the
library and a £200 cheque for your chosen
charity.
We really enjoy helping children think of
others less fortunate than themselves at School
Notices and were so impressed by Sebastian’s
efforts. He explained to us how he planned
everything, including his snuggly clothes,
before climbing the South Downs to take his
photo where ‘you can even see the sea!’
Sebastian is a keen sportsman who clearly
adores life at Windlesham. He easily decided
what the library should spend his £200 prize
on. ‘It’s Barry the Fish with Fingers and
anything with volcanoes or hedgehogs in!’ he
told us. About his chosen charity Sebastian
also said,
“I chose Chestnut Tree because I
wanted to help little children who are
poorly and live near me…”
Well done Sebastian, we loved our trip to
Windlesham House to meet you!
Do you pick the house or the school first?
Guy Robinson
Head of Agency,
Strutt & Parker
Parents perceive
fi nding a home in the
catchment area of their
preferred school to
be a top priority when
looking for a new place
to live.
A recent poll* showed
that more than a quarter
of parents have bought
or rented a new property in order to help
their child get a place in their desired
school. Not only this, it showed that they are
prepared to pay a premium of up to 18% for
the privilege.
The fi ndings show that 46% of families in
London and 46% of those in the North East
have moved to be close to a good school.
This compares to 29% of families in the
South East, 25% in Yorkshire and Humber,
24% in the North West and 11% in Wales.
“Competition for properties
close to the best schools can
be fierce.”
A survey by Which? earlier this year similarly
revealed that nine in 10 homebuyers
refused to compromise on their new home’s
proximity to local schools. Guy Robinson,
head of agency at Strutt & Parker, says: “It is
undeniably clear that schools are the single
biggest motivator for most homebuyers with
children under 18, and understandably so.
Competition for properties close to the best
schools can be fi erce, particularly those
which are oversubscribed.”
He advises that picking the school fi rst rather
than the house is the most sensible way for
a young family to approach a long term
move. “If the house of your dreams is not
located close enough to your child’s school,
it may become a reason to move again
further down the line. For a long term and
happy move, the location needs to tick the
right box as much as the house.”
“The location needs to tick
the right box as much as the
house.”
Guy continues: “I often hear proximity to
schools is why so many people choose to
sell; perhaps the school run has become too
much, or juggling the numerous afterschool
clubs is no longer working. My advice would
be to think ahead to where your family will
be in 5 years and consider how the location
of the house will affect everyone.”
“Finding a home near the right school, in an
accessible location, and close to transport
links might seem like a hard task, but
work with your estate agent and stay open
minded. Lifestyle is, and always will be, the
biggest consideration factor when moving
house.”
JOBS FOUND...
“School Notices has done wonders
for my ability to find work outside
of London. As an initially London
based, agency tutor, School Notices
gave me the perfect platform to
find new, freelance clients and
build relationships with a couple
of fantastically kind and generous
families. I now feel comfortable
finding work on my own and know
that I have a reliable advertising
platform to use when I need it.”
TICKETS BOUGHT…
“My wife took me by great
surprise when she appeared
with two Rugby World Cup
semi-final tickets that she had
secretly acquired off School
Notices. She had bought them
from a parent at a different
school and they arrived the next
day recorded delivery. I had a
brilliant day with my son, who
was as chuffed and impressed
as I was.”
FUNDS RAISED…
We’ve loved being involved with
School Notices. It’s given our parents
a tremendous place to buy and sell
things easily and a great channel
to advertise the growing number
of parent owned businesses that
we see, across a broad network of
schools. Not to mention the fact
that it has generated some really
useful funds for our school’s smaller
causes, as well as lighten the
workload of the school office! It’s a
really tremendous development for
us and our parents”
