IN BRITAIN”
SHERBORNE DAYS &
THE MAKING OF A WRITER
When I look back on my Sherborne days,
I have only good memories. Summers were
somehow always sunny, winters crisp, the
banter in the common room always full of
mirth. Dynasty was a highlight, Eastenders
had just started, Dallas kept me up at night
fantasising about Bobby Ewing. I fancied
Patrick Swayze, loved the Eurythmics, had
a penchant for blue eye-liner, frosted pink
lipstick, baseball boots and big, backcombed
hair. I don’t remember studying much,
I remember little of the classes, but I
remember everything about the fun – is that
what they call nostalgia? The subconscious
filtering of memories so that one only
remembers the positive things.
I remember climbing out of the lavatory
window to smoke More Menthols on the
roof. I remember throwing up after smoking
three and vowing never to inhale another
cigarette again. I remember sunbathing
topless in the field above the river on a
Sunday, I remember shoplifting an eyeliner
pencil as a dare in Boots and I remember
wearing mini skirts that almost showed my
pants. I remember paisley tights, push-up
bras and high waisted jeans alla
Bananarama! I remember falling
in love over and OVER again,
but it was always unrequited.
I remember so much because
my daughter is now at the same
school, in the same house, and
every time I visit more memories
hurl themselves at me and I’m
dragged into the past and it
really doesn’t feel that far away –
By Santa Montefiore
and yet it is, very far away.
We talked about boys a lot. I was
commissioned to write a short romantic
story about one of the girls and the boy she
fancied at the boy’s school. It was an instant
hit and I was swiftly commissioned to write
more. In my free time I wrote stories that
would later develop into novels, for which
I am paid handsomely now. I’m grateful
for the many times I fell in love, for the
longing and pining and dreaming as we
lay on our beds listening to Billy Joel and
Laura Branagan, fantasising about those
boys who were most likely terrified of us and
our girlish passion. There’s nothing more
frightening for a boy than love!
Boarding school was where
my writing began. Now I’ve
written sixteen novels! One of
the massive themes is always
nostalgia. I’m so lucky to have
had wonderful school years
to be nostalgic about. I hope
I’m giving the same gift to my
children. Because what are we if
not a sum of our pasts?
Flora’s Kitchen has been unbelievably
busy since it opened its doors to the next
generation of great cooks and to some
old hands too! Everyone who has cooked
around Flora’s island has been truly
inspirational and had great fun. As Flora
says, “I have been reunited with old friends and
made new ones too. I am loving every moment - and
sometimes the learning goes both ways.”
Chicken paillard with gremolata
oil, minted new potatoes and
a dressed green salad
Serves 4
4 chicken breasts - preferably organic
A handful of flat-leaf parsley, stalks
removed and finely chopped
3 finely chopped small garlic cloves
75ml extra virgin olive oil
Zest of one small lemon grated
A sqeeze of lemon juice
New potatoes
3 sprigs of fresh mint
Olive oil
Salad leaves - washed if necessary
Salad dressing
300ml olive oil
100ml vinegar (red wine or tarragon)
2 tbsp of Dijon mustard
2 tbsp soft brown sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
RECIPE
From Flora’s Kitchen
1. Cut the chicken breasts in half lengthways
to make two slim pieces.
2. Place each piece of chicken between two
layers of cling film and hit with a mallet or
a rolling pin or failing that a skillet / small
frying pan.
3. For the gremolata oil, pour the extra
virgin olive oil in a bowl and stir in the
garlic, parsley and lemon zest.
4. Put the potatoes into a pan with cold
water and put the lid on. Bring to the boil
on a high heat and then remove the lid
and simmer until tender. 10 to 20 minutes
depending on the newness of the potatoes.
After approximately 5 minutes add the
sprigs of mint to the pan and continue to
simmer. When tender drain in a colander
and return the potatoes to the pan ensuring
that no water is in the bottom but keeping
the mint. Add a knob of butter and set aside.
5. Make the salad dressing by simply
putting all the ingredients in a jug and
whisking them together with a fork until
they emulsify.
6. Heat a skillet to smoking and season
the chicken breasts on both sides with salt
and black pepper. Cook the chicken for
1-2 minutes each side. You can do this on
a BBQ.
7. Place the chicken onto a warm plate and
pour over half of the gremolata oil and a
good squeeze of the lemon juice.
Serve with the potatoes and green salad.
In recent years there appears to have
been a tsunami of music festivals and other
music related events that have started up,
with a whole series of “family friendly”
ones appearing almost every weekend from
now until the end of September. The
curious fascination that the British
seem to have in camping in the
middle of a muddy field, either
with or without their children, is a
craze that even knocks selfies into
second place. But these events are
big business, attracting huge crowds
and sometimes some decent acts, and
demand for tickets (some of which are
eye wateringly expensive) has never been
higher.
However, there is a problem! Camping
or not, where do you find a decent place to
meet up on site, that you know is going to
be filled with friends and that you can tell
your kids to head back to in order to find
you. And that’s why we invented Pubs on
Wheels. Pubs on Wheels are based on the
philosophy of a boutique country pub so no
matter what the event you can always expect
to receive a friendly welcome from our
team, and more importantly a choice of
delicious drinks from cool refreshing
draught cider and lager, a selection
of local real ales, excellent Bloody
Mary’s, exceptional Gin and
Tonic’s, a wide range of delicious
Champagnes, red, white and rosé
wines and, of course, lots of drinks
for thirsty kids. Even better, all of our
Pubs offer free Wi-Fi just for our customers,
so you can upload pictures of you sipping
chilled rosé straight to Facebook rather
than waiting until you get home.
So next time you are booking tickets,
make sure that there is a Pubs on Wheels
in attendance to make your experience that
much better.
A child’s perspective of holidays - Phoebe, our junior
travel correspondent, reports from... Canada
I am so lucky because our family go on the
most amazing adventure holidays. Last year
we went to the west of Canada and I loved
every minute of it. On the Pacific coast, we
stayed on a floating lodge in the middle of
nowhere and saw no one else for days. We
followed killer whales, gray and
humpback whales, and saw seals
from our little boat. We fished in
the rivers and sounds and found
rock paintings showing the first
white man’s ships and trading
beads from around 1790 in an
abandoned Indian settlement.
One of the highlights was
meeting Trapper Rick who
lives in the woods and is a local
legend. He had the Indian Chief
staying who was also a Shaman
and knew about the spirits. He took us to see
bears catching salmon with their paws by
leaping into the river which seemed much
easier than using a fishing rod.
While sitting on the riverbank, a mother
and baby came right up behind us. She was
so close, I could smell her! It was terrifying
but Trapper Rick talked to her and said she
wanted to fish where we were so we had to
crawl away but we hid in the bushes and
watched her teaching the baby bear to fish.
It was so cute.
We also went to the Rocky
Mountains which were
awesome. We did loads of
hiking by the most incredible
blue and green lakes,
through flower meadows
and huge forests and even to
one giant but freezing cold
glacier. It was all amazing
but sometimes quite scary
because it is a wild wilderness
and bears could be hiding
behind the next tree. Trapper Rick told
us to be really careful of cougar and black
bears because they are the most dangerous.
I did sometimes wish I was not the smallest
in the family and the slowest at running!
PROPERTY
CAPTURE THE PERFECT SHOT OF YOUR
CHILDREN ON HOLIDAY
By Millie Pilkington
TO ADVERTISE IN OUR
AUTUMN EDITION
email: info@schoolnotices.co.uk
1. Don’t ask your child to ‘smile’
for the camera - this merely encourages
the horribly fake toothy, eyes scrunched up
look. You have to make them smile or laugh!
Often the simple things such as tickling or
teasing them, telling jokes, loo humour etc…
can work wonders! Also, it’s not always about
capturing the smile. Some of the best shots
are when they’re lost in thought. When photographing
siblings together, consider getting
them to interact between each other rather
than just smiling at the camera. This way you
capture their relationship and a more natural
moment.
2. Think about the lighting. Unless
you’re very nifty with the camera shooting
direct into the sun is very tricky so best to
avoid. That said, bright sun on their faces
creates harsh unflattering shadows and causes
them to squint up their eyes. Shade is usually
the easiest and most flattering light - e.g.
under a tree with their faces looking into the
light behind you. Soft early morning and late
evening sun is lovely and creates a warm glow
(and enhances their sun tan!). Where possible
avoid the camera flash - it’s better to shift up
the ISO and have a grainy photo, than have
your automatic flash which flattens the face
and kills the mood, not to mention red eye!
3. Consider composition and backgrounds
carefully. Zoom in close. Fill the
photo. Try framing the photo with your child
off centre - asymmetrical photos are more interesting.
Simple clean backgrounds are best.
Avoid cluttered or busy backgrounds with objects
coming out of their heads! Clear unnecessary
rubble away such as discarded clothes
and shoes etc.
4. Keep their clothes as simple. And
where possible avoid busy, strong patterned
clothing, especially bold logos. If you’re photographing
siblings together, make sure their
clothing works well together.
5. Spontaneous photographs are
often the most fun - so keep your camera
at hand and seize the moment!
Home buyers who
had previously
hesitated to make a
move due to election
uncertainty are now
actively returning to
the market, with the
latest figures showing
a spike in volume
and price growth
across the UK. Our
National Open House Day in June was
evidence of this, turning over large viewing
numbers and subsequent offers.
We are seeing a welcome return of
confidence to the housing market and the
economy post-election, particularly in the
prime country house market. With more
properties and more choice, buyers are
keen and ready to buy at the right price.
We are expecting a busy market until
the end of the year resulting in a rise in
transaction levels that is likely to increase
property prices, which we have revised
from 3% to 5% annual growth.
Popular homes for buyers remain the
same; close to good transport links, picture
perfect views, land or a large garden, well
maintained structurally as well as internally,
and for families to be near a fantastic
school is a must have.
We often find that homes near schools
rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted will enter
fiercely competitive bidding wars. There
are other advantages too – these properties
often hold their value in a challenging
market and tend to sell faster if the market
stalls, simply because there will always be
parents willing to pay the extra premium for
their children. This competition generates
something of a micro-market.
In the London market, we have already
seen a marked change since the election.
From a noticeably subdued atmosphere,
those sellers and buyers who had
previously hesitated have since been
more enthusiastic in moving forwards with
their property purchase. As such, we now
expect a 3.5% annual house price growth
across the Prime Central London market
throughout the rest of 2015. Our London
offices in Chelsea, Fulham, Knightsbridge,
Kensington and Notting Hill are well placed
to act on this activity and we expect this to
level out steadily as we move to the end of
the year.
Interestingly, our latest Housing Futures
research proves that lifestyle change
remained the dominant motivation for
moving. We similarly found that good
broadband connectivity and an AGA oven
ranked highly on buyers’ wish lists.
With a positive outlook for 2015 and with Strutt & Parker’s national network and local
expertise this is the ideal time for both buyers and sellers alike.
