Welcome
to Alevere Therapy
The non-surgical, tailored,
rapid weight loss programme
Weight and body shape issues are very common problems for
many people, but may well have resulted in you feeling as
though you’ve been in a never ending battle with dieting and
exercise. Being overweight may have led you to poor physical
health, low self-esteem or other more serious conditions.
"I promised myself that I wouldn’t be 50 and frumpy, five years later I was saying
the same thing despite joining a gym and a slimming club. At the beginning of
2015 I was told, after having a health check at the doctors, that I had high blood
pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes and was told that I needed to lose
10% of my body weight in two months. By the end of February everything was
still the same. It was now time for some drastic action! Luckily one day coming
home from work in rush hour traffic I was stuck behind a bus advertising Alevere
Therapy. As soon as I got home I looked it up on the internet and booked in for
a consultation. It turned out that I had a very low metabolism which is key when
trying to lose weight. I started the programme in March 2015 and haven’t looked
back since. I have lost just over 4 stone in 5 months and have gone from size 18
to 12. My blood pressure and blood sugar is back to normal and I feel amazing.
My friends, family and colleagues at work have all been very supportive. They
keep telling me how proud they are and give me compliments daily. I have even
started wearing dresses and skirts, which is amazing as I used to wear trousers all
the time. I would have no hesitation in recommending Alevere to anyone who
is serious about losing weight and improving their health".
The BWC girls excite us with
their month of foodie love
Oh hi sunshine – we’re rather fond of the impromptu picnics and
alfresco cocktails you bring with you! We’ve been making the most
of the warmth this month with a fantastic get-together at The
Willow Tree at Bourn. For those who haven’t visited recently, they
have a fabulous set-up under their willow tree namesake, with a
tipi you can dine in and two of the best swings we’ve ever swung
on. There’s a selection of events coming up this summer, including
comedy nights, a family music festival and a ball, so do have a look!
Another sunny evening saw us trying out the brews on offer at
BlackBar Brewery in Harston. They teamed up with Shelford
Delicatessen, who served up hands-down the best kebabs we have
ever sampled. Coupled with a pint of Blacklight, this is a partnership
we hope will run many more events this summer.
When the weather played hardball, we tried out the new Six
Panoramic Bar and Restaurant at The Varsity Hotel on Thompson’s
Lane. Located just one floor below the roof terrace, it has stunning
views over Cambridge. As you take in the view, you can drink your
way around the world with their 12 cocktails spanning the globe in
their inspiration. Pizza and rotisserie chicken can keep you sustained
as you gaze.
You wait ages for a new hang out to come along, and two spring
up at once. We’re planning to return to the recently opened Sticks
‘n’ Sushi on Wheeler Street many times – if not just to try the
extensive menu. We love the slick décor in this sushi joint with a
difference – its tag line is ‘sushi for people who don’t like sushi’ and
we can certainly concur.
Our foodie travels have taken us further afield this month, and
we are delighted to have discovered the gem that is The Mermaid
at Ellington. This run-of-the-mill local is anything but, once you
step inside, and the menu left our jaws firmly dropped. The food is
exceptional – if you’re over Huntington way, do visit.
And once all that became too much for our tired legs, we pulled up
a pew at the brand-new Fitzbillies at 36 Bridge Street. It joins the
ranks as number two in the local establishment chain and yes, we
can confirm that the Chelsea buns are just as good as in the original
spot.
Food
Eat Seasonably:
As July sees beetroot at its
best, we were keen to find out
how some of our local chefs
are using it
This root vegetable is
a really rich source of
iron, vitamin A and C,
potassium and fibre as well
as being jam-packed with
powerful antioxidants.
It’s also a really versatile
ingredient which can be
used in a number of dishes
from salads and soups to
risottos and even desserts.
Carrot Pancake, with
Beetroot Tzatziki and
Feta Salad
“We have this carrot pancake starter on our
menu at the moment and we’re also using baby
beetroot in one of our fish dishes. Seasonal
produce is at the forefront of almost all of our
menu and beetroot is really at its best at the
moment. It’s a good one for adding colour and
making a dish pop, not to mention the rich
flavour.” says Ben Hutton, owner of Ben’s.
Beetroot Marinated
Pollock, Pickled
Beets, Samphire,
Salsa Verde and
Poached Hen’s Egg
“Our kitchen love this time of year,
purely because of the diverse range of
ingredients that are suddenly in season.
Beetroot is always a favourite. It’s one
of the most versatile ingredients in the
kitchen that we use in a number of
ways. In this dish we chose to pickle the
beets, as the sweet and sour flavour cuts
perfectly through the pollock. It also
adds a touch of vibrant colour to any
summer dish.” Jamie Bridges,
Sous-Chef at The One Bull told us.
The One Bull
Beetroot Brownies
“I love using beetroot as it is super
rich in antioxidants, folic acid and iron,
adding great nutritional value to a cake
or dessert which is otherwise regarded
as naughty! It adds moisture and a rich
colour but above all it has a natural
sweetness which has a slow-release value
so it sweetens without creating those
sugar spikes,” says Sally Fulcher, author
of The Clean Body Cook Book based in
Newmarket.
Pop to
food
With an in-house deli and a menu
focused entirely upon local and
seasonal produce, The Pantry
should be on your foodie hit list
this month
If you weren’t aware of what a fantastic region we live in when it
comes to local produce, then The Pantry will certainly show you. We
popped in for lunch this month to hear about, and taste, some of the
delights which are found right on our doorstep.
The Pantry is another local hot spot that I hadn’t yet explored - well,
except for the takeaway ‘Friday treat’ chocolate brownie, which I
must add was insanely delicious. With the promise of local fresh
produce, I was most excited.
As I looked through the menu, there wasn’t anything that didn’t
look appealing. It had everything from chargrilled halloumi, Welsh
rarebit and cured Suffolk bacon chop to deli boards, rib eye steaks
and sandwiches. And the specials board also had lots on offer. This is
changed frequently, due to the inspiration The Pantry gets from its
suppliers as well as what’s hot seasonally. Personally, it’s things like
this which create a faultless menu. In a bid to stick with The Pantry’s
recommendations, we opted for the scallops from the specials board
to start, and the smashed avocado bruschetta. Parma ham and
balsamic vinegar made the perfect accompaniment to the scallops,
and the creamed avocado on sourdough was also a hit. The toasted
seeds and lemon meant we had a really refreshing start.
Seeing the sun had decided to put his hat on, I went for the chicken
superfood salad. It was jampacked with leafy greens, red onion,
beetroot, tomatoes, chick peas and avocado. The chargrilled chicken
on top meant it was really filling, and the dressing was light, not too
overwhelming and incredibly tasty.
We also tried the wild mushroom rigatoni with spinach. The sauce
was rich and again, packed full of flavour.
As if this wasn’t enough, we couldn’t help but devour dessert too.
It was summer pudding and The Pantry’s famous triple chocolate
brownie which made the cut. The summer pudding was full of sweet
berries, and the sponge was light. This too, was perfect considering
the glorious sunshine. Now I know that you wouldn’t usually finish a
salad with a brownie, but it was completely worth it! I perhaps wasn’t
saying that when I then dragged myself running later that evening,
but it was everything you’d want from a brownie... rich, gooey and
indulgent.
If you’ve not got time for lunch, explore their in-house deli and
picnic hampers. Whether you’re off to the races or perhaps heading
somewhere else, The Pantry has some really beautiful hamper
options, all of which are served in traditional wicker baskets with
cutlery, plates and napkins, meaning everything’s covered. A typical
classic picnic hamper has sandwiches of your choice, from Exning
smoked salmon, Suffolk ham or Binham blue cheese. There are
also Newmarket sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, Corkers crisps and
homemade scones with jam and clotted cream. Other hamper
options are available, or you can perhaps build your own. Whether
you’d prefer antipasti, quiches or perhaps a fresh dressed salad,
The Pantry is on it. If you’re quick, you may just be able to sort your
Ladies Day picnic!
Whether it’s a Pantry picnic to-go, a light lunch, or perhaps an
evening dinner, The Pantry really has got homemade quality down to
a fine art.
Food
Q&A with Anne-Marie, owner at The Pantry
Where do you source your meat and fish?
We source our meat and fish from our neighbours, Eric
Tennant Quality Butchers, and Fish! an award-winning
fishmongers.
What about your cheeses?
These come through a Cambridge cheesemongers called
Cheese Plus. Some of our favourites are Suffolk Gold and
Blue, from Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses and Mrs. Temple’s
award-winning Binham Blue from Norfolk.
What else do you source locally?
Lots! Our deli has a continuously growing range of produce
from Suffolk, as well as Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. From
Suffolk alone, we have chocolate bars and chocolate gifts,
sauces, jams, chutneys, dressings and even bacon jam! On
our menu we have Suffolk salamis and chorizo made from
pork which is reared and cured at Lane Farm in Brundish.
What is your favourite locally-sourced ingredient?
That’s a difficult one... but right up there is our 9oz rib eye
steak sourced from local farms by our butchers, Eric Tennant.
It is so tender and full of flavour... a firm favourite with our
customers too!
What is the main reason you choose to use so much
local produce?
Firstly, by using our neighbouring businesses as suppliers, we
receive the most fantastically fresh produce on a daily basis,
and have built a great relationship with them, ensuring we get
the best quality produce. It means a lot to us to support local
businesses and also our town centre. Our fresh food deliveries
are literally walked to our door and our wine is wheeled round
to us from Corney and Barrow. This is the best way we know
to keep down our food miles. It was always our intention to
source locally; however, when we started our journey, we had
no idea just how much our county and region had to offer, and
it just keeps growing.
When it comes to exceptional dining, Tuddenham Mill is
undoubtedly up there. Not only has it recently been recognised
as Suffolk’s Best Restaurant in the Suffolk Food and Drink Awards
2016, but its Commis Chef, Max Cameron, has also been named as
Young Chef of the Year, so Tuddenham Mill has lots to shout about
this summer.
Set in the idyllic Suffolk countryside, this traditional watermill offers
some simply stunning views. The mill pond is surrounded by an
abundance of outdoor seating spaces and is even complete with
adorable little ducklings that float peacefully. We called in for lunch
We were welcomed by General
chic and contemporary. “Our menu
are lots of fantastic flavours on the
menu currently. I would certainly
recommend the English pea soup, the Denham lamb and the
explained. Following his recommendation, we opted for the
English pea soup with ricotta, seeds and nasturtium leaves, and the
Shetland mussels cooked in St Edmund’s beer with garlic and kale
to start. Whilst we waited, we were given complimentary canapés
and warm homemade bread, which was a lovely welcoming touch.
Being a lover of mussels, I’ve certainly had my fair share. These
were absolutely faultless, incredibly fresh tasting, and I couldn’t
believe the sheer size of them. We were also able to try the Angus
short beef rib which was topped with chopped hazelnuts, sea aster,
shiitake mushrooms and soy. It truly was a mix of unique flavours
that just worked.
For the main event, we chose the Denham lamb, which had been
reared down the road, with Jersey Royal potatoes, broad beans,
smoked garlic, feta and sea cabbage and the black bream. The
blushed lamb really did melt in your mouth, and the feta made for
a really different take on the veggies. The cider-drenched bream
was divine. The brown shrimps and leafy greens were cooked to
perfection and the sauce was incredibly rich.
Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, along came
the real showstopper... dessert! To say I have a sweet tooth is an
understatement, so dessert for me is a dealbreaker. The Suffolk
strawberries with Italian meringue made the cut, as did the bitter
chocolate pot. The meringue had a very intense freshness to it, and
I loved the different textures running throughout. The crushed ice
worked well and the strawberries couldn’t have been sweeter.
As for the chocolate pot, wow! (This will be the real reason I’m
heading back). The cacao was of the perfect richness and, though
raspberry sorbet wouldn’t usually be my first choice, it offered a
refreshing kick at the end. Just heavenly.
Afterwards, we met with Malcolm and Lee to learn a bit more
about the team behind the culinary masterpieces. “For me, it’s
really important that we set ourselves apart from the rest here
at Tuddenham. I really work hard to incorporate seasonal and
local produce into innovative and flavoursome dishes. Our menu
is constantly changing which is again something I think is really
important. We have a really young team in the kitchen; my Sous
Chef, Stuart, is only 23, but his skill set and ability is so advanced.
The energy between us is definitely at the core of our success,” Lee
Bye told us.
It was really refreshing to visit a local gem which is as passionate
about its customers’ dining experience as it is about serving high
quality food and drink. What really topped it off for me, was
the unbelievably reasonable pricing. For just £19.50, I had an
exceptional 3-course meal which was completely faultless. The
whole experience was unforgettable and I cannot wait to head back.
If you’re going to head somewhere new, off the back of a local food
review, I strongly suggest you make this venue top of your list.
Crispy Fish Butties with Dill Mayonnaise
1 Stir together the flour and paprika. Place the seasoned
into the egg and finally the breadcrumbs.
2 Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
Cook the fish, in batches if necessary, for 3–4 minutes on
each side until crisp, golden and cooked through. Drain on
english
wines
‘Is 2016 the year when the French finally recognise that,
here in England, we can produce wines just as delectable
as theirs?’ asks George Unwin from Baythorne Hall
Earlier this year I found myself reading
that, yet again, in a blind tasting held in
Paris, a panel of French wine professionals
had chosen a selection of English sparkling
wines over a selection of prestigious
Champagnes as their preferred wines.
This seems to
We have
some serious
winemaking
expertise in
this country
be becoming
a regular
occurrence, and,
believe it or not,
there are now
mutterings that
the French are
finally beginning
to accept that we
can produce some very good wine (some
are even purchasing vineyards over here),
and so they should. English sparkling wines
are delicious; they’re mostly produced
following the Champagne method, from the
same grape varieties used in Champagne
and, throughout much of the south of
England, on the same soil type. The only
possible limiting factors, therefore, are the
climate and the skills of the winemaker.
Global warming has certainly helped with
the first of these, and education, experience
and an influx of foreign knowledge
now means that we have some serious
winemaking expertise in this country. The
results are very exciting and the future of
English sparkling wine production looks very
good indeed, but what about still wines,
especially those produced in our region?
As one of the panel of judges at the East
Anglian Wine Awards last week I tasted
a range of wines which hugely impressed
me. The sparkling wines were very good,
but it was the quality of the still whites and
rosés that was most exciting. The dry white
category had the most entries, and it was
of little surprise that the dominant grape
variety on show was Bacchus. This is a
variety that deserves far more recognition,
especially in East Anglia, where I think it
is at its very best. It produces wines that
are fresh, flavoursome and a little lighter in
alcohol (typically 10.5 – 11.5%) than most
dry wines.
The rosé category was smaller, but the
quality was very high. We may struggle to
get black grape varieties ripe enough in this
region to produce top red wines, but they
have plenty of colour in their skins come
Autumn time to produce delicious rosés.
The lovely pale salmon pink colour of most
of the wines on show was their first enticing
characteristic, and then came the delightful
floral aroma and summery flavours on the
palate.
If you’re looking for some lighter, fresher
wines for the summer, then do try
something local. I love to support local
producers wherever possible and, here at
Baythorne Hall, we’re lucky to have the
excellent Tuffon Hall vineyard just down the
road. Its sparkling and still whites and rosés.
are great examples of what we can produce
in East Anglia, and, in the year or so I’ve
been stocking them, they have gained quite
a following, especially during the summer
months. With new producers like Tuffon
Hall now cropping up across the region,
there are a lot of great wines to discover, so
I suggest you start looking today.
Too early for Christmas?
Apparently not, according to
Sonia and Cheryl, owners at
The Bull Inn
So, we just had to ask... Why Christmas so early?
It may seem early to most of you, but this is now peak booking
season for us with the Christmas events. We had so many people
that we couldn’t get onto our parties or events last year, that
they are not taking the chance this year! We already have lots of
bookings in, with some of the themed party nights only having
limited availability left already! We get large groups of friends and
local companies who return to party with us year on year, who take
advantage of the early booking discounts that we offer.
What is on the agenda for The Bull Inn this Christmas?
This Christmas period is an extra special one at The Bull Inn, as we
are celebrating “10 years of Christmas Parties”, so, if anywhere
knows how to stage a fun-filled party with award-winning food, it’s
us! The first events on this year’s festive calendar are the Murder
Mystery dinners on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th November.
These evenings are closely followed by our legendary tribute
nights. On Saturday 26th November we welcome Robbie Williams
and his band, and then Saturday 2nd December sees Elvis and his
showgirls. We are now well into the Christmas season when the
Viva Decades themed parties take place on Fridays/Saturdays
throughout December.
Of course, in addition to the parties, we offer festive lunches and
dinners – with the special Jingle Bells lunch always being a popular
event. So much so, we have added an extra date this year, on
Sunday 18th December, for the whole family to enjoy!
What makes Christmas at The Bull Inn different?
Christmas is such a fun time of year for us as the whole team looks
forward to it from the moment the previous year’s hectic schedule
comes to a close.
Each year we have a theme for all of the Christmas festivities,
and this year it is Viva Decades. The team members make the
difference between a standard run of the mill Christmas party and
a party at The Bull Inn – they are always first on the dance floor,
and ready and eager to get the party started.
What has been your highlight out of all of the
Christmases you’ve done?
Christmas is such a magical time filled with fun and festivities with
twists and turns along the way, and each year just gets busier and
busier with more events added in. The number of repeat bookings
show that each year is fresh and fun.
Tell us a little more about your Christmas menu...
Our team of chefs pride themselves on still providing the same
quality of food on party nights when we feed in excess of 250
people that we serve all year round. Our talented chefs ensure
that you get a mouth-wateringly good, fresh, piping-hot,
delicious three course meal made with amazing local ingredients.
Some of the dishes on the menu this year to tantalise your taste
buds include flaked salmon & garlic prawn tian with a chilli & lime
dressing and red onion salsa to start, followed by 10-hour slowbraised
steak, silverskins & mushrooms in local ale and creamy
mash, topped off with a delicious chocolate & cointreau terrine,
candied nut dust, chantilly, chocolate sauce. You can view our full
christmas menu by downloading our brochure from our website.
So this year celebrates 10 years of Christmas for you at
The Bull Inn... What are you doing differently this year?
Year on year, our events become more and more popular,
meaning we have to come up with new ideas and themes. We have
introduced an additional Jingle Bells festive sing-a-long lunch,
this year, on Sunday 18th December, as it is so popular. It will be a
festive lunch with a live duo singing all of our favourite Christmas
classics.
Which event are you most looking forward to?
There is honestly not one event that we look forward to more
than the others, but here’s what some of the team are looking
forward to:
Callum: “The themed party nights are my favourite, as everyone
has such a great time and there is always a great atmosphere and
everyone gets involved.”
Shaun: “I love the Santa’s Sunday lunches, as they are such fun to
get involved with and are that bit different to your normal lunch out,
with the visit from the big guy himself and the girls all dressed as
festive elves.”
Kiera: “I love the tribute nights. The live music and the buzz that
goes along with it make them really good evenings. I’m especially
looking forward to seeing Elvis and his showgirls.”
Jade: “My favourite night to work is New Year’s Eve, as everyone is
already in a great mood and ready to have an amazing party!”
10 Cloverfield Lane
Director: Dan Trachtenberg
Stars: John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr.
Release Date: 26th July
Despite its somewhat deceptive title, those expecting a straight
sequel to JJ Abrams’ 2008 monster mash may be disappointed.
10 Cloverfield Lane has been labelled a ‘spiritual successor’ and
rather than the city-spanning mayhem of its predecessor, it follows
Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who is imprisoned in an
underground bunker following a car crash. John Goodman is terrific
as her captor (or is he?) Howard, as Michelle sets out to discover
the truth behind her terrifying situation. 10 Cloverfield Lane will
keep you guessing, and despite a divisive ending, is one of the year’s
most gripping thrillers.
Bridget Jones’s Baby
Directors: Sharon Maguire
Stars: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey
Release Date: 16th September
Ten years have passed since the second instalment of the Bridget
Jones’s Diary series of films. Thankfully for fans, Bridget Jones’s
Baby looks to be steering away from the jarringly bleak plot of
Helen Fielding’s third novel. With Bridget pregnant, the stage is
set for yet another love triangle, and Colin Firth’s beloved Mark
Darcy and newcomer Patrick Dempsey star as the latest pair of
warring suitors. Bridget’s pregnancy could be an interesting twist on
a formula that is likely to be becoming a little stale by now, though
Zellweger and Firth’s chemistry may be enough for some.
Metronomy
Summer 08
Release Date: 1st July
Hastily announced in
May, along with lead
single ‘Old Skool’,
Devon electro group
Metronomy’s fifth
studio album bristles
with the confidence of
a band with nothing to
prove. Recorded solely
by founding member
Joseph Mount, album
opener ‘Back Together’
sets the tone with
an effortless blend
of angular guitars,
shimmering synths and
playful lyrics, while Old
Skool is a polished, slick
and understated tune.
By now we know what
Metronomy can do,
and Summer 08 could
well prove to be the
soundtrack to summer.
Racing
The First
ladies of racing
Pete Townshend takes a look at the female pioneers of horse racing
It would be impossible to deny that, historically, British horseracing
has been a male-dominated industry. Apart from the presence of
royalty, not least the Queen and the Queen Mother, most would
find it quite difficult to name any prominent women prior to the
1970s or even 1980s.
It is for this reason that here at Velvet we want to celebrate
those often forgotten pioneers of racing, all those strong, sassy,
determined trailblazers whose dogged tenacity paved the way for
the female champions of today to ride side by side with (and often
ahead of) their male counterparts.
Queen Anne
Founder of Ascot Racecourse
One of the earliest, and arguably most prominent women in British
horseracing over the past 350 years, was Queen Anne. A lover of
horses, it was out on one of her rides near to Windsor Castle in 1711
that she first discovered the area of heathland that would become
Ascot Racecourse.
To celebrate this contribution to racing, the opening event of Royal
Ascot is marked by The Queen Anne Stakes, a deserving tribute,
but one that is a rarity for our other female pioneers.
Mrs. Thornton
One of the first and most colourful female jockeys
Originally Alicia Meynell and born in 1782, the self-titled Mrs.
Thornton was quite probably the only female jockey of the 19th
century. In 1804, this glamorous, blue-eyed beauty raced against
her brother-in-law, Captain William Flint, for a bet of £1,500.
Although losing the race, her skillful riding and colourful attire
caused such a stir that a company of light dragoons was required
to control the enormous crowds. One newspaper at the time is
quoted as saying, “Never did a woman ride in better style.”
Ellen chaloner
First female trainer
Her Majesty The Queen opens the Millenium
Grandstand at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Course
Daughter of legendary trainer, John Osborne, and wife to jockey
and trainer, Tom Chaloner, Ellen enjoyed a life closely associated
with racing.
Following her husband’s death in 1886, she successfully gained a
licence to train in Newmarket and took over his operation, making
her the very first female racehorse trainer in Britain.
Two of her sons also went on to become successful jockeys and
trainers, and Ellen continued her involvement in racing until her
death in 1944.
Despite her achievements, 80 years passed before the next
female trainer was recognised by the authorities.
Racing
modern day legends
The first racing licences were granted to female jockeys in 1972,
and since then the sport has seen a huge transformation.
In 1977 Charlotte Brew became the first woman to ride in The
Grand National, followed by Geraldine Rees becoming the first
woman to win this great steeplechase in 1982.
A few years later saw the emergence of Alex Greaves, who, by
the time she retired, was considered Britain’s most successful
female jockey, riding around 300 winners.
Since then, women have been a regular feature at the top of
the horseracing game, with the likes of Hayley Turner, Kirsty
Milczarek and Cathy Gannon consistently stamping their
authority over their male counterparts.
Aside from the jockeys themselves, women are also present in
the highest echelons of power in the industry. Kirsten Rausing
is a prime example: one of the richest women in Britain, this
former Director of the National Stud is a member of the Jockey
Club and owner of Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, not to mention
a current Director of the British Bloodsock Agency.
Hayley Turner
Florence nagle
The dawn of a new era
Florence Nagle began training racehorses in the 1920s. However,
continuing gender inequalities prevented her from being granted
a licence in her own name. This forced Florence and fellow female
trainers Norah Wilmot, Auriole Sinclair and Louise Dingwall to
employ men to hold licences on their behalf.
After a number of rejected applications, Florence’s determination
took her battle all the way to the High Court where, in 1966, both
Florence and Norah Wilmot were eventually granted licences to
train racehorses in the UK. This victory marked the beginning of a
new era in the industry.
Betty Tanner
First woman to ride the Newmarket Town Plate
The Newmarket Town Plate is the oldest organised race in history,
and is hailed as being the birth of modern organised racing. It was
instigated by King Charles II in 1666 and is raced on the same
Newmarket circuit to this day. In 1923, Betty Tanner unwittingly
discovered that the Town Plate fell outside the rules of the racing
authorities at the time, making it open to female riders.
She took advantage of this loophole and made history that year
by taking part in the race. Although not victorious, she paved the
way for many other female riders. In 1925 Eileen Joel became the
first woman to win the Plate, which quickly became the race for
women.
Thanks to the contributions of all these women, horseracing is
now celebrated as one of the only professional sports where men
and women can compete against each other on an even field.
So, join us in celebrating the forgotten female pioneers whose
actions have come together throughout history to play a part in
making horseracing the great sport that it is today.
Special thanks to Esther Harper of King’s College, London, for her
kind research assistance.
We catch up with Mark
Cordell, Chief Executive of
Ourburystedmunds, to discover
more about the independent
businesses that make the town
so special.
“Bury town centre has always had a
thriving independent business sector,
and I am absolutely delighted to say
that despite the challenges of recent
recessions and the creation of the arc
Shopping Centre, Bury St Edmunds
remains a showcase for independent
businesses.
Ourburystedmunds is the Business
Improvement District (BID) for the
town, which represents over 400 town
centre businesses. At the last count,
57.2% of town centre businesses are
independent, compared to the national
average of 41.4%. There’s even an
independent business on every street
of the town centre!
There are so many reasons to shop
with independent businesses in Bury
St Edmunds. Not only do they offer
unique products and services and
provide fantastic levels of service,
but, for every £1 you spend with a
small to medium-sized business, 63p
stays in the local economy, compared
to 40p with a larger business.”
We meet the people behind the independent
businesses of Bury St Edmunds
Retail
1. Pocket Watch & Petticoats
Sophia and Adrian opened Pocket Watch and Petticoats in St John’s Street, a sister
boutique to her Ipswich store, this spring. “When I saw a vacancy in St John’s Street, THE
independent street in Bury St Edmunds, we jumped at the chance quicker than a Ginger
Rogers dance routine!” says Sophia.
Selling glamorous vintage inspired clothing from sizes 6-26, Sophia explains, “Whether
you’re a pocket rocket or a curvaceous goddess, our items nip you in at the right places,
embracing womanly curves to show off the ultimate hourglass figure! Seeing is believing
with all of our dresses.”
Since opening the boutique, winning Independent Business of The Year, having to deal with
celebrity shoppers (Ruby Wax if we’re name dropping!) and managing the Pocket Watch
and Petticoats Facebook page, which is very popular and frequently receives five star
ratings, Sophia says her feet haven’t touched the ground.
2. Cabana
Cabana will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary this
September having been successfully trading ever since they
opened. Their journey began by stocking predominantly swimwear
but, around four years ago, they made the decision to start
supplying lingerie and nightwear too. “Later this year, we’re going
to be offering out customers an amazing new leisurewear range by
Seafolly which is really exciting.” Jackie told us. “Bury St Edmunds
is a really supportive town and we will always recommend other
local retailers if we cannot help the customer in our shop.”
she continued. “For us at Cabana, it’s all about offering great
customer service and knowledge. Different brands fit in different
ways, so we urge customers to try things on, in order for us to
help them. We get a really wide range of customers through the
door which makes every day different.”
3. Thurlow Champness
Thurlow Champness, on Bury’s historic Abbeygate Street, has
been a purveyor of luxury items since 1815. The family business
has chosen to stay loyal to its high street roots by not selling
on-line, as it believes that purchasing jewellery is an experience
that should be enjoyed, and therefore requires the personal touch
if great customer service is going to be delivered.
Their strength lies in their dedication to maintaining the trust
and confidence of customers by providing exceptional personal
service and unrivalled expertise.
Whilst Thurlow Champness stocks exclusive brands such as Rolex
and fine diamonds, its sister store TC2, just around the corner,
offers a more accessible collection. TC2 houses fashion brands
such as Links of London and Thomas Sabo.
4. House of Snow
The bridalwear boutique, House of Snow, stocks brands such as
Jenny Packham and Pronovias, and is one of Bury St Edmunds’
newest retailers. Having only opened the business at the
end of May, House of Snow’s owner, Harriet Snow has been
overwhelmed by the customer response and the support from
other business owners.
“Having not come from Bury or known the area greatly, we have
met so many wonderful people, whether they’ve been our brides
or other businesses on the street. Bury St Edmunds is a very
friendly, welcoming town, and I feel honoured to be a part of it,”
explains Harriet.
Appreciating the need to align with the digital world, House Of
Snow’s Instagram page offers great inspiration to anyone planning
a wedding. When not attending to brides, Harriet can be found
busily updating Facebook and Twitter, letting us all know what’s
new at the House of Snow.
5. Abbeygate Lighting
Abbeygate Lighting is a true family business offering every kind
of decorative lighting imaginable. Its impressive range includes
all the latest trends, from contemporary to traditional, as well as
a collection that evolves to accommodate the latest fashions in
home interiors.
Area Manager of Abbeygate Lighting, Sarah Gooch champions
Bury St Edmunds as a great place to retail. “We have a great
shopping environment, with many events happening throughout
the year; the town always feels vibrant. Bury has changed over
the past 10 years and trade is up. The newness of the arc shopping
centre brings a modern aspect to a very traditional town, which is
working well,” Sarah continues.
Melanie Fairweather will soon be celebrating her fifth year running
her business, Bliss Hair Studios in Langton Place.
My team at Bliss are all passionate about hair and have a flair for
noticing the latest styles and trends “looking at the catwalk this
season super straight looks almost glass-like are on trend so we
are anticipating reaching for those ghd Hair Straighteners again”
says Melanie
Of course being on trend is not only important but maintaining
healthy hair is a top priority for Bliss with the use and sale of
quality products like Redken, L’Oréal and Goldwell.
Melanie says she loves being part of Bury St Edmunds and would
7. Nicola Sexton
Nicola Sexton opened her shoe boutique six years ago, and in
that time has not only launched her own brand that’s successful
internationally, but has also expanded to offer key pieces of
clothing. “My customers’ ages range from 30, to well in to their
late 70’s. I have realised that they expect a unique collection
from us both in footwear and clothing. I think that is why my own
label has proved so popular alongside the other brands that are
exclusive to me in the UK,” says Nicola.
To keep up to date, Nicola appreciates the internet, but
understands the importance of a high street presence.
She explains, “We notice that a lot of local people use our website
as a catalogue to view before they visit the shop to buy, so our
physical shop and internet store compliment each other and
together offer incredible customer service.”
Lucy and Caroline are local to Bury and, since opening the store,
have been overwhelmed with the support they have received, with
“We are now looking forward to the brand’s A/W collection and
Genese is a brand that has recently
celebrated its 25th birthday and takes pride
in the fact that the collection is designed
and made in-house by a talented team
of designers, who keep their eyes on the
current catwalk trends and latest looks worn
by our favourite celebs and A-listers.
The brand’s aim is to make you look a
million dollars without the huge price tag!
Luxury fabrics and embellishments are the
backbone of Genese’s latest collection,
which offers a mix of dresses that are
perfect for occasions or casual pieces
such as this lime green shirt which has a
stand-out zip detailing at the back.
Style Awards
Newmarket’s July Festival will host the
‘Style Awards’, with thousands of pounds worth
of prizes up for grabs. Our Velvet Mag editor
will be on the panel helping to judge the best
dressed lady, gent and couple.
A/W16 collections (gulp…) will be hitting
stores by the end of the month. Keep
your eyes peeled for this autumn’s most
anticipated trends.
Velvet sportswear, shiny and tight vinyl
trousers, sequins and statement earrings.
“If there’s ever an occasion to flex your style muscles, it’s
Ladies Day at Newmarket. Prep, prep and more girlie prep
goes into Newmarket’s most glamorous day in the diary, and
the prospect of winning a ‘Style Award’ this year seems to
have upped the anti to stratospheric proportions. It’s an
honour and a privilege to pick our best-dressed lady, and,
for me, I like to see effort, co-ordination and elegance. A
token gesture to a key trend, like frills, shoulders or stripes for
example, will give the edge; nothing should be too short or lowcut,
and heels should be a sensible height. In a season of cropped
tops and raised hemlines, dressing for Ladies Day this year will
have its challenges, so it will always pay to remember your outfit
should be more Buckingham Palace than Brighton beach!”
‘Inhale fashion, exhale style,’ says Ludy,
our favourite outspoken lifestyle blogger
Valentino
Erickson Beamon
Zara
I despise cheap clothing; I abhor lycra, loathe nylon and shudder
at any synthetic garment accompanied by a ‘wash me as you
please’ label, as I am bombproof and flammable. However, times
are definitely changing. In the last decade, the rise of affordable
fashion, which is casually displayed after the meat and veg sections
of your supermarkets, has slowly filtered through our culture, hand
in hand with the dreaded and socially-acclaimed sense of austerity.
Don’t get me wrong, saving cash is genius, and oh so very politically
correct, BUT always remember that less is more. The reality is
that, for the first time ever, the young generation has less earning
power than their parents. ‘Spend wisely and make it last’ is your new
mantra, so dismiss opulence in favour of a ‘wise investment spend’.
The winning card lies in investing in core pieces which may initially
shock our wallets, but, when chosen wisely, they will skip along
loyally with us for a very lasting time.
There is a very astute road we can follow in order to reach our visual
fashion highlights without having to resort to cheap imitations or
dreaded fakes. Our canny style mission may feel like a daunting
task, given we are fed such obscene lavishness, but we will start
by visualising our own personal style and promise to be creative.
Your winning wardrobe staples will simply offer a stylish alternative
instead of a blatant imitation. Meanwhile, keep dreaming big, and
never EVER regret investing in a wardrobe icon. Focus on your
new-found fashion mantra, ‘inhale fashion, exhale style’.
Do’s
• Balance your outfits. One bling
element is plenty to focus on
against a backdrop of high street.
• Statement watch/jewellery. You’re
better off with a Swatch Watch or a
funky G-shock, than any wannabe
fake gold bling arm candy.
• Always collect vintage pieces.
• High street finds should fit you
like a glove, thus exuding a look
of sheer perfection, regardless of
what your price tag dictates.
• Take off one item before leaving
the door… Best tip ever!
• Take inspiration from
@matchesfashion or @netaporter
collections before browsing the
high street.
Topshop
K Jacques St Tropez
Dont’s
• Invest in expensive, of the
moment, over-the-top fashion
items such as a four-figure silk
bomber… really? Have fun in
Topshop or Zara instead.
• Buy identical like-for-like
imitations or fakes.
• Don’t rest your loyalty with one
brand. Too much of one brand at
once is never advisable.
• Be too fashion conscious! Stay
timeless. Only one item per outfit,
please.
Dermalogica
IonActive Power
Treatment
This month, Sammi tried out Dermalogica’s new IonActive Power Treatment
Promising to target almost all
skin concerns (acne, dehydration,
pigmentation and aging), this new
professional treatment drives ingredients
faster and further into your skin.
The IonActives are converted into
electrically-charged atoms which means
they’re supercharged for optimal product
penetration.
“I had the Niacinamide treatment which
helps to target and prevent breakouts. Mel
at Essential Therapy used the Ultrasound
wand to push the product into my skin,
followed by the Endothermal Gelloid, a
cooling gel-like product that helped seal
the benefits of the active ingredients and
calm the skin. It felt really refreshing and
my skin has never looked clearer. It felt
and looked incredible for over a week
afterwards and I can’t wait to go again.
Whether you have acne-prone skin,
dehydrated skin, ageing skin or blemished
skin, Mel will sort it.”
#Microblading
A relatively new technique to the
UK, this form of semi-permanent
make up allows individual hair
strokes to be created in the brow
area. Microblading not only gives a
finer hair stroke line than traditional
methods, but, due to the formulation
of the pigments, does not fade with
that pink or blue hue which can be
the tell-tale sign of semi-permanent
eyebrows. Gemma had her eyebrows
microbladed with Emma Peters.
you ask
Should I take a break from eyelash extensions?
“Some lash salons advise it, some don’t! I personally have clients who have had their
extensions on for over three years without taking a break, and their natural lashes still
look healthy and strong. Others with weaker natural lashes, or who have a build up of
make-up and bacteria may need to have a rest. It is a huge shock for long-term lash
wearers to have their extensions removed. So, to alleviate the loss of eyelash extensions,
you can use a lash growth serum or have a lash tint and lift.”
holiday beauty countdown
Get holiday ready with this timely advice from Velvet’s beauty expert, Anna Philbin
Beauty
weeks to go
If you haven’t already started, get yourself down the gym - HIIT training is a great quick
fixer. Alternatively, a squat challenge or abs challenge is always good to add to a routine
– quick and easy, and just enough time to show improvement! Also, drink lots and lots of
water and ease up on the tea, coffee and fizzy drinks - caffeine is a no-no when it comes
to the war on cellulite. Beauty-wise, get body brushing and exfoliating - you want fresh
new radiant skin for the first time you dip your toe in the pool. For at home I love Elemis
Lime and Ginger Salt Glow, it’s super toning, and with its unique blend of oils and sea
salt, it re-mineralises the skin. Don’t want to break the budget? Go for Soap & Glory’s
Breakfast Scrub (smells delicious)! Fancy a treat? Then visit SK Clinic in Bury St Edmunds
- their Tropical Saltmousse Glow is to die for, and you get to choose from two totally
tropical combinations… my favourite is Pineapple-Papaya!
weeks to go
Throw in some PT sessions or classes at
the gym to give your workout an extra
boost before you’re knee deep in paella
and Sangria! Time for a haircut – a trim
just before your holiday means luscious
hair on holiday, and you need healthy hair
to go away with, otherwise those beachy
waves will look more like dragged through
a bush backwards hair! A facial a few
weeks before your holiday is the perfect
way to prepare your skin for holiday
and to leave you glowing. Try Pevonia’s
Plantomer Hydrating Facial at SK Clinic;
it maximises hydration, which is just what
you need pre-holiday!
weeks to go
If you’re into sunbeds, then now is the
time to start a course. Pure Beauty in
Newmarket has some great stand-up
sunbeds. Don’t overdo it and keep well
moisturised if you’re going for gold this
way. Dry, leather handbag skin is not
a cool look, and I’d only advise a few
sunbeds pre-holiday to prepare the skin
for the heat; otherwise, pick up a
moisturiser with gradual tan. St Tropez
now offers one which has an instant hint
of bronze, so you can see what you’re
doing when applying, as well as looking
pretty fine pre-holiday.
week to go
Eeek, it’s here! This is when things get serious! First, you can’t beat a bikini wax from Pure
Beauty, they are pure perfectionists, and, whilst you’re there, treat yourself to a bright
holiday OPI Gel Polish, not forgetting the toes. They have a gold glitter that is perfect for
showing off tanned hands and feet, and goes with everything! Final finishing touch – lash
extensions! No mascara needed, they look good even round the pool, and you’ll save loads
of time taking off your make up too. Pay a visit to Salon at Number 5, Newmarket or
Cambridge, for luxury mink lashes, and, if you don’t want to go OTT on the lashes, you can
go for a half set for a more natural look- et voilà!
So now you’re toned, tanned, have perfect skin, hair and nails, it must be time to go!
See you at duty free (who am I kidding - the bar!). Don’t forget your passport! x
Yoga for Sport
Paula Ahlberg explains how yoga can help an
athlete’s performance
The summer months inspire many of us to get out the running shoes and polish
up the bike. Even though the British summer is unpredictable, there is nothing
like getting outside to exercise. However, most athletes know that overstretching
may impact performance.
Yoga postures are not stretches as such, but a series of focused isometric
contractions coupled with specific breathing patterns that yield gains in flexibility,
mobility and strength. If you are in training for an event, add one full day of yoga
practice in an instructor-led class during a day when you would normally do a light
workout, or when you would normally have recovery. Incorporate 15 minutes of
yoga practice after training sessions. Pick just three or four poses each day and
work on them to feel the incredible benefit.
Classes range from beginners through to dynamic power yoga, which will even
challenge any athlete! We have many runners here who find yoga crucial to
development and recovery.
signing up for 1-1 sessions with Tom could
seriously help you out. Tom is a Level 3
Personal Trainer with Premier Training
International as well as being a member of
the Register of Exercise Professionals, an
Advanced Sport and Exercise Nutritional
Advisor, a Circuit Training Instructor and a
Kettlebell Instructor.
There’s absolutely no need for a gym
membership, as Tom is happy to train
wherever suits you: your home or garden,
your local park... you name it.
Being aware of all my recent food reviews
plus the fact that I’m heading away on
holiday later this month, Velvet decided to
put me through my paces. I tend to train
5 or 6 times a week as it is, so I was hoping
I’d keep up. I wouldn’t say I lack motivation,
but I was certainly looking forward to a bit
of variety.
The session began with a quick but
fast-paced warm up. The rest of the
hour consisted of functional full-body
movements, including overhead squats
with a 25kg power bag, renegade rows,
lunges and targeted TRX arm exercises.
The TRX is a really versatile piece of
equipment that I do tend to neglect a little
in the gym. Tom had me doing a range of
movements which were really challenging.
They required core strength and balance,
and it was great to engage muscles that I
wouldn’t usually.
Now, sprints are certainly not my friend,
but I kind of like them at the same time. I
enjoy pushing myself and am really aware
of their fat-burning benefits. No pain,
no gain! Tom spurred me on that little bit
more than I would if I were in the gym
alone, and kept reminding me that my
holiday was soon approaching! After a long
day in the office, it was also really nice to
enjoy some fresh air.
With his expert knowledge and the kind
of flexibility Tom offers, you’d be silly not
to snap up a session with him. Men or
women, if you’re lacking motivation and
variety, bored in the gym and not hitting
those fitness goals... Tom is your guy!
His sessions are completely tailored to
the individual and their end goal, meaning
both training and nutrition is adapted
accordingly.
To find out how
Invisalign can help you
achieve the smile you always
wanted, Max and his team are
holding an open evening
Monday 25th July 2016
Something to
We caught up with Max Leslie, from
Hurst Park Dental, ahead of their
Invisalign open evening this month
Max has had a long-standing interest in aesthetic dentistry and
finds Invisalign fits in perfectly with his ethos of achieving beautiful
smiles using minimally invasive techniques. He is experienced
in smile design and restorative cosmetic treatments such as
composite resins and veneers.
So what is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a way of straightening teeth using a series of virtually
invisible removable aligners. It doesn’t use wires or metal
attachments like conventional braces, so treatment doesn’t get in
the way of your normal brushing routine or eating your favourite
foods.
How does that work?
The aligners are custom-made specifically for each patient using
a computer-generated model of your teeth. You wear the aligners
20-22 hours per day and change sets every two weeks. They work
by moving your teeth millimetre by millimetre until the teeth are in
the desired position.
Do I have to come back every 2 weeks?
No, you can change your aligners at home but we recommend
a check up every 6-8 weeks. If I haven’t seen a patient for this
amount of time, I can really notice a big difference.
How noticeable are they?
Hardly at all! One of my patients didn’t even tell her husband she
was having the treatment and he had no idea. As they are near
enough invisible it means patients do not feel self conscious.
Do I have to wear them all day?
We suggest wearing the aligners between 20-22 hours a day for
the best results. They are to be taken out whenever you eat or
drink, but kept in the rest of the time. Just remember that the teeth
won’t move if you don’t wear the aligners!
Velvet Magazine | July 2016
Health
Do they require much maintenance?
Not really, other than ensuring you keep them clean. I suggest
cleaning your teeth and the aligners after eating.
How will I know what it will look like at the end?
We take an impression of your teeth and we then use ClinCheck ® ,
a software programme, that enables us to see the progress ahead
of time. The 3D programme shows the series of movements the
patient’s teeth are projected to pass through and enables us to see
an end result. This is really useful and helps the patients to visualise
what the outcome will look like. The software has really improved
over the last 5 years... it’s incredible what we can do!
ClinCheck ®
Max provided us with five
ClinCheck ® images of one of
his patients who is currently
undergoing the Invisalign
treatment.
How painful is it?
My patients say that the first few days of each new aligner are a
bit uncomfortable but other than that, it’s very minimal. Most are
actually surprised at how little it affects them. Again, this is another
huge bonus to Invisalign. As the movements are so small there
shouldn’t be that really painful stage, and there’s also no metal or
sharp edges like with other braces.
How long is the treatment?
It ranges from anywhere between 6-18 months depending on the
patient, but I have had people who have achieved their results in as
little as 14 weeks.
What is the follow-up treatment?
We strongly recommend patients wear a retainer every night for at
least a year in order to maintain the teeth’s position. Many patients
wear it for the foreseeable future.
A few things that i tend to stick to:
This is an honest look into what I am eating during a working week. I don’t really stick to a
pattern as such and I’m not great at planning my food for the week.
1. Always drinking around 3 litres of water a day.
2. Always eat high quality protein.
3. Train 6 times a week depending on how busy my diary is.
Get Yourself A
Brazilian Butt
With the Olympics in Rio next month, we though we’d give you
Always seek the
advice of an exercise
professional or doctor
before commencing
an exercise
programme.
the lowdown on how to get yourself a Brazilian butt of your own...
Specific exercises which focus predominantly on the glute
muscles are a must if you’re looking to tone, sculpt or build your
behind. Adding weight to certain strength training exercises can
really make a difference.
Try completing 10 of each of these exercises continuously, with
a 1 minute rest inbetween, for 5 rounds. Always remember
to perform warm up exercises for at least five minutes and
effectively cool down when you have completed the circuit.
Barbell Glute Bridges
Glute bridges are an isolated exercise which really focus on
strengthening your glutes. To do a barbell glute bridge, or a hip
thruster, place your upper back on a box or bench with a barbell
or weight across your hips, and your feet firmly on the floor. Start
with your butt on the floor and drive the weight up until your
knees are at right angles. Gently lower, and repeat.
Squats
This is the obvious way to getting a more peachy behind, but are
you doing them right? Whilst free-standing squats and jumping
squats are great at lifting the heart rate and feeling the burn,
adding weight will push your muscles to work even harder. Start
with a weight you can do fairly comfortably but where you can
still feel the burn, gradually increasing after a few weeks. Jumping
squats are also great for getting the heart rate up and feeling
the burn.
Lunges
Lunges are another great way for strengthening your glutes.
Grab two dumbbells and hold in each hand. Perform 20 walking
lunges, alternating each leg as you go. Make sure your weight
is heavy enough for you to feel the
resistance. If you’re looking for a
more advanced
variation, place
your back foot on
a bench or step.
Step Ups
If you’re looking for lift and
perkiness, steps up are the way.
Choose a step or bench which
is high enough so that your
knee reaches a right angle when
bent. Alternate between each leg,
and again, hold the dumbbells to
increase the intensity. Aim for 10
on each leg.
Now you may have seen the
architecturally stunning Sports
Centre, constructed by Arup
Associates, but have you been
inside and seen the abundance
of facilities on offer?
This month, Lauren Thomas, Sports Marketing
Coordinator, gave us the grand tour of the University
of Cambridge’s Sports Centre. The centre houses a
large lobby and lounge area complete with a big screen
TV so you can keep up with all of the sport that this
summer has to offer.
When it comes to fitness, there’s a spacious suite with
an abundance of cardiovascular machines to get the
heart rate up, including Jacobs Ladders (google them)!
If strength and conditioning is more your thing, the
centre has a separate room dedicated to all things
lifting, which is home to 8 Olympic lifting platforms and
a 2-lane plyometric track.
For those looking to partake in sports, its sports hall has
two full-sized courts for basketball, badminton, netball,
five-a-side and other court games. Other facilities
include multi-purpose studios which are utilised for
martial arts, table tennis and fencing, as well as a Team
Training Room that can be hired out if you want one
of their highly-qualified instructors to put you or your
team through their paces.
If you enjoy the buzz of a class, you should check
out their jam-packed timetable. There’s Body Pump,
Circuits, MetCon (Metabolic Conditioning for those
who were unsure!), Ballet Barre, Pilates, Studio
Cycling, Yoga, Zumba and more. Whether you’re
looking to work on your fitness levels, improve flexibility
or perhaps de-stress or just try something new, their
classes cover it all.
These fantastic facilities are not only open to students,
staff and alumni, but to the wider community too.
Summer is a great time to get on board: we suggest
making the most of the lighter mornings and evenings.
Be sure to call The Centre before 31st of July to find
out about their great summer membership offers.
Quick Q&A
With Newmarket-based sculptor, Edward Waites
Most notable commission?
I’ve been lucky enough to do some work for some great clients
and have had the privilege to have some of my work included in
the Queen’s collection.
Favourite sculpture to date?
I enjoy sculpting horses and big African wildlife the most! I have
a gorilla I did a few years ago that is still probably my favourite!
Why do you choose the materials that you use?
I choose to cast in bronze as it’s held in such high regard in the
art world, and always holds an integral value. Once a piece is
cast, it will be around for hundreds of years, if not more.
Advice for someone looking to invest in sculpture?
Firstly, buy something you love! You’ll have to live with it and
enjoy it through many years even if the investment comes
through in the future.
Career highlight?
Selling work to our Royal Family is still a massive career
highlight, but there have also been many more poignant
moments for me over the last 10 years. In the last three years,
I’ve sculpted two life-size horses and an eight foot horse head,
taking them around the country with me and working on
them live at big events! They have all been an engineering and
logistical nightmare, but I have achieved what I set out to do
each year with these pieces.
Nothing quite finishes off the home as well
as freshly cut flowers. Florist to the stars,
Paula Pryke OBE, lets us in on how she will
be decorating the most discerning homes
this summer.
“My favourite UK flowers are roses, lilies
and tulips, and luckily these can be found in
abundance due to our British growers. I like
to pair those with quintessentially English
cottage garden favourites like sweet peas,
peonies, delphiniums and stocks for vibrant,
fresh and natural-looking home decoration.
To add even more British flavour, I suggest
adding alliums, a flower from the onion
family, and beautiful agapanthus, otherwise
known as lily of the valley.”
Article by Eleanor Rostant
I appreciate
history, but you
have to bring your
own experiences
into your rooms.
Istvan Francer
www.elledecoration.com
www.popsugar.com, Danny Seo
The new trend for the up and coming
season is to mix and match in your interiors
by adding different styles, shapes and
patterns to a room, resulting in a quirky look
that is unique to you.
This could begin with a mixture of patterned
cups being displayed proudly in your
kitchen, creating a playful environment
for the heart of your house. It could then
be translated into the living room by using
different bold, statement throws and pillows
to revitalise a lonely, dull sofa. If you want
to start small, maybe just a corridor or
blank wall, how about a range and mixture
of picture frames? Build these up to create
a wall of vintage frames to hold your
treasured memories in.
This trend is already becoming a huge
hit throughout Europe in places such as
eccentric Amsterdam coffee shops or
unconventional retail spaces in Sweden.
Either way the edgy, indie, modern style
of decorating is to take a more carefree
approach.
This is a great trend to follow if you’re bored
of dull, everyday-looking rooms or maybe
you have a lot of clutter and it’s time to get
creative and find a fun solution? Give it a go
and get imaginative, you would be surprised
what a bit of chaos can do!
consumption and friendly to the
environment - we’ve rounded
up a few eco cars which are
promising just that…
BMW i3
Mercedes-Benz C350e
Plug-In Hybrid
This 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine has
four driving modes; comfort, sport, sport
plus and eco, all of which are supplied by
the high voltage, 6.4 kWh battery pack.
If you’re still looking for performance as
well as efficiency, then this should be an
obvious choice. The C350e is the 2nd
plug-in vehicle from Mercedes-Benz
and isn’t likely to be the last. They’ve said
there will be a further eight by 2017, all
of which will offer high fuel efficiency and
high performance.
you’re in for a peaceful ride, and the
interior is extremely sleek.
John Banks introduce
you to the new Infiniti Centre Cambridge
To Infiniti and Beyond...
If you weren’t already aware, Infiniti, the
luxury division of the Nissan and Renault
Alliance, was founded back in 1989. Fast
forward 27 years, and it now has over
230 dealers across 15 countries. Many
of you will only know of Infiniti through
the association with the Renault Formula
1 Team, but this distinctive car brand
has now joined the John Banks Group in
Cambridge.
So why should you consider Infiniti?
Infiniti itself is currently rivalling the likes
of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, since
it offers truly crafted high-performance,
luxury vehicles at a competitive price. The
brand has retained an air of exclusivity with
only 12 showrooms currently, the latest of
which has just opened in Cambridge.
Infiniti is certainly progressing. 2016 has
seen the launch of the Q30, and in June,
the QX30, both designed in Paddington,
London and also built in the UK, in
Sunderland. Featuring dramatic curves
and a sharp three dimensional design, you
will notice the influence of Daimler Benz
who have collaborated in the manufacture
of the Q30 and QX30, with Infiniti
becoming the fastest growing automotive
brand in the UK in the first 5 months of
this year. The introduction of the Q60 will
also increase the existing range by the end
of this year, and is certainly one to watch
out for.
And why the Cambridge Centre?
Now available right on your doorstep, the
pop-up showroom has the luxury touch
with the latest technology and a range of
new demonstrators as well as some select
used Infiniti models. Next year will see the
redevelopment of the John Banks Group
site at 13 Swann’s Road, Cambridge to
fully incorporate Infiniti into a brand new
showroom designed for Renault, Dacia
and Infiniti.
Mark Banks, Managing Director of
The John Banks Group, said, “We were
delighted when Infiniti approached us to
represent the brand in Cambridge. This
is a great opportunity for us to offer a
range of cars which is not just new to our
Group but new to the area. We were all in
awe of the style of these cars, and I have
seen how popular they are in the US and
abroad, so we knew that they would be
eagerly received in Cambridgeshire when
we opened.”
Last month, we popped in to meet the new
team, who were all very welcoming. It was
great to see a showroom so passionate and
knowledgeable about their new adventure
here in Cambridge, and so considerate of
the customer experience which is at the
centre of the brand’s ethos, as well as the
sleek, executive cars they have to offer.
