OVER COMING
BULIMIA
It’s a struggle I’ve never really
talked about. One that still courses
through my mind every now and
then. Maybe I could do it again...
and no one will know. But everyone
knew before. They just never
said anything. How can you approach
someone about their habit, struggle,
battle, disorder?
But soon my habit became barely
eating at all. Maybe a sugar-free
cookie here and there to curb sweettooth
cravings, or some crackers
because I needed a little something
in my stomach. Mostly, I just drank
gallon after gallon of water. Looking
back, I don’t know how it was
possible to have the energy to run, to
go to college full-time, and to work
three part-time jobs on top of having
a relationship. I think being burnt out
and emotionally lax is much of the
reason my eating habits drastically
changed.
one woman's personal
story of victory
a cookie or a few crackers. Family
get-togethers or other big meals were
followed shortly thereafter by a run—
for two purposes: to burn calories and
to find a desolate place to make myself
sick. “No one knows,”
For about six months when I
was in college, anorexia and bulimia
took over my life and dropping the
weight became an addiction. It all
started with changes to my diet—I had
cut out soda, fast food, snacks and junk
foods and the weight from my then
150-pound, 5-foot-3 body started to melt
off. I started running again after a hiatus
from high school where I was physically
active in marching band, cross country,
track and weight lifting, and was named
“Most Athletic” in the senior superlatives.
Even now, sleep becomes
more important for me than eating...
back then, those 10 or so years ago, if
I had time between classes, I usually
napped instead of eating. Every now
and then I’d “splurge” with a bottle
of brewed tea and a plain bagel (and
it was so good, but I felt a guilt for
giving in and sometimes would get
rid of the “evidence). At that period
in time, I also lacked control over my
life and it seemed everything around
me was falling apart in such a short
period of time.
There were big changes:
College, moving out of the home for
the first time to my own apartment.
My closest brother was deployed to
Iraq, my parents were separating and
would soon divorce, my boyfriend at
the time had moved 800 miles away.
Subconsciously, I wanted control
over something. My habits evolved
into making myself vomit after I ate
I’d tell myself. By then I was running
two or three times a day in between
everything else. Exercise and eating less
was my cover for losing weight — and
I almost forget that I was using weightloss
supplements, too. There was an
excitement that came from fitting into
a size 5, a size 3, a size two dress in the
bridal shop where I worked. Then, a
size 0 pants. But part of me knew that
wouldn’t last since I always struggled
at least somewhat with my weight.
And I wasn’t really any happier being
thinner...It didn’t change anything.
‘ALL I REMEMBER IS
ONE DAY FEELING
SO WEAK, TOO THIN
AND REALIZING THIS
WASN’T THE ATHLETIC
AND STRONG GIRL
I ONCE WAS"
one woman's personal story of victory
Current image of myself (2015)
“I WASN’T REALLY
ANY HAPPIER BEING
THINNER...IT DIDN’T
CHANGE ANYTHING.”
It’s still hard to explain it
to anyone; I can only say I needed
control but didn’t realize it, I felt a
strange satisfaction and relief, and
it just took over like an addiction.
All I remember is one day feeling
so weak, too thin and realizing this
wasn’t the “athletic” and strong girl
I once was. No one knew me this
way. What was I doing? It took some
time to break the habit. I was still
thin when I travelled the 800 miles
to see my then-boyfriend and I think
maybe he was even taken aback by
my stature, though I was then about
115 pounds, up from my low of 98. I
spent a week down south where diet
or unsweetened tea doesn’t exist (tea
is my vice). And a meal at a Mexican
place the night before my morning
flight left me the sickest I think I’ve
ever been. Maybe that was the turning
point.
Slow changes and I
eventually became healthier. I still
ran, but I ate. A lot of foods were off
of my menu for a long time, and now
I still can’t eat ice cream, pepperoni,
or a few other foods, without getting
sick. In many ways, my body is not the
same as it once was. I credit back and
joint pain and occasional seizure spells
to my bout of eating disorders. The
back pain has taken away my ability
to run as I used to. There is so much
information online about anorexia,
bulimia and the consequences that
result. Just to name a few consequences
of anorexia: Reduction of bone
density, muscle loss and weakness,
fainting and fatigue. Bulimia can lead
to inflammation and possible rupture
of the esophagus, peptic ulcers and
pancreatic, irregular heartbeats, and
much more. There is no doubt my
body has suffered from my few months
of struggling. Fortunately I snapped
out of it, somehow, before needing
professional help or developing
other health issues and suffering the
consequences.
Do it again? No, I definitely
think not. Anyone who is struggling
with an eating disorder should do some
research, call one of the many hotlines
available, talk to a family member
or friend, and do what is needed to
become healthy again.
TIPS FROM THE
UR IT Pros
EIGHT WAYS TO FIGHT WINTER SKIN
1. Try to use your heating system
sparingly. It can remove moisture
from the air, causing dry skin.
2. When you have to be inside,
slightly open a window to let in
some moisture. If it's too cold out
use a humidifier to put water back
into the air.
4. Even in the winter, still apply a
sunscreen. Use a moisturizer with a
SPF that can help soothe chapped
skin and prevent further irritation.
Artistry Cosmetics
Offer great
prices with
all natural
ingredients.
Found at
Amway.com
7. A warm bubble bath might feel
good, but it actually dries out your
skin. Take a shower. You use less
water and it is kinder to your skin.
3. Caffeine is a diuretic and
dehydrates. So think twice before
you have that second or third cup
of coffee. Instead consider water,
especially coconut water. Your skin
will thank you.
5. Apply lotion to the cuticle crease
of your fingernails daily. This will
stop painful hangnails before they
develop.
6. Swiss glacier water, sea
buckthorn and rose hip seed oil
each have been shown to restore
skin damaged by cold weather
8. After showering, always pat skin
dry with a towel and moisturize
while skin is still damp. This aids
in absorbing your moisturizer and
refreshes your skin.
You can find sea buckhorn,
and Rose hip in supplement
form, body soaps, shakes,
and even in some cosmetics.
Bright and Bold is the hair
trend for 2015. Take a
look around. What color
hair do you see the
most? If you’re not sure what to
say, it’s because no one has the
same. Being bold is the rising
trend. Everyone wants to have
their own style and be different.
Choosing an off the wall color to
add in your hair is in right now.
Purple, pink, blue, green, red; you
name it, someone is rocking it.
Anyone, any age can add
a little pop of color. You can add
small streaks hidden throughout
your hair, or go bold by coloring
your hair completely with a bright
color. Asking your stylist about
bright colors is always a great
way to get the look you want.
Bright colors are also DIY. Don’t
be afraid! Some of the UR IT
team is even doing it! Take a
look at our January cover girl, she
BOLD
HAIR
Color
had a strip of purple on just one
side of her hair. One model has
all one color bright red, and our
new 2015 model has a rich, dark
purple color overall. The UR IT
hair/ makeup artist has a whole
head of rainbow colors! She went
extreme, she said, “I love all of
the colors I had to try them all!”
Here are a few ideas of what
you can add to your hair this
season. Instead of just boring
highlights, add some bright pink
or blue streaks. If you want to
surprise people, add some peak-aboo
colors of green or yellow. For
those with a more bold look, color
the underneath section of your hair
red, purple, or both! Colors don’t
have to be symmetrical, just put a
color on one side of your head, or
mixed into your bangs. If you have
an asymmetrical haircut with one
side shaved, add a few colors to
the shaved side; as it grows out,
the tips will be frosted. Still not sure
what to do? Choose a dark pink
or maroon for an overall look. Add
colors however you like, rock your
own style!
The best thing about bright
colors is, they are not permanent
so changing from one color to
another isn’t a problem. Your
hair adds to your style; this is
2015, there are so many hairstyle
possibilities. Don’t be afraid to try
something new!
THE LOVE
HORMONE
“YOU CAN GET YOUR FIX
ANYWHERE AT ANY TIME. ALL YOU
NEED TO DO IS HUG SOMEONE
OR SHAKE THEIR HAND”
10
The hormone Oxytocin has been
referred to by many different names
which include the hug hormone, cuddle
chemical, morale molecule, and the
bliss hormone.
Oxytocin is a hormone that is
made in the part of the brain known as
the hypothalamus and is transported
and secreted by the pituitary gland,
which is located at the base of the
brain. This brain chemical is proving
to be a crucial ingredient to what
makes us human.
One of the neat things about
Oxytocin is that you can get your fix
anywhere at any time. All you need to
do is hug someone or shake their hand.
The simple act of bodily contact will
cause your brain to release low levels
of oxytocin both in yourself and in the
person your touching.
Often referred as the “love
hormone”, oxytocin increases the
desire for couples to gaze at one
another, create sexual arousal, and
helps males maintain their erections. It
is the primary factor for bringing about
an orgasm. During an orgasm the brain
is flooded with oxytocin and this is a
possible explanation why couples like
to cuddle after sex. Oxytocin is also
responsible for helping women get
through labor by
stimulating uterine
contractions. After
birth mothers
establish intimacy
and trust with their
babies through
touch and in
addition mothers
pass oxytocin to
their babies.
This amazing
hormone is also
believed to
induce feelings of
optimism, increase
self esteem and
build trust. If this isn’t enough, studies show that
this hormone, which can be synthetically made,
has countless uses.
It has been shown to heal
wounds and relieve pain.
It can be used to prevent obesity in
people who show a oxytocin deficient
Also researchers have found that
oxytocin has a connection to people
suffering from depression and stress.
Oxytocin also has
been proven to increase
generosity in humans. In
other words it’s clear that
we really wouldn’t be human
without it. We would simply
lack the ability to be the
social and caring species that
we are. It plays a crucial role
in forging our ability to spark
and maintain relationships.
While endowing us with the
ability to empathize, trust,
and even love one another.
So what are you waiting for?
Go out and hug someone!!!
SOMETIMES BEING
SINGLE IS NEEDED
even on valentines day
12
Coming from a girl
who is in her early
twenties and has
been in and out of
relationships for the
past 8 years, ‘tis the season to be
single. You learn so much about
yourself, as well as what truly
makes you happy. Sometimes,
we have a tendency to change
ourselves for others and forget
what we actually like. With
social media shoving it in our
faces about “relationship goals”
and what true love should be, it
is easy to feel pressured to be
in a relationship that may not
be ideal. The best time to find
yourself and enjoy time with
friends is now. You have the rest
of your life to find “the one” and
having faith that he or she will
come will lead you directly to
that person.
]
“This is time to focus on
YOU. Don’t worry about
finding that significant
other, because he or she
will come when you’re
least expecting it.”
So, what will I be
doing this Valentine’s Day? I
could scroll through Tinder
in hopes of finding a date. I
could have a cuddle session
with my dogs. I could take
advantage of the holiday by
waiting on tables and receiving
great tips from guys trying
to impress their girlfriends. I
could even spend the night
watching chick flicks with my
best friend who also happens
to be single. But, what I won’t
be doing is spending the day
with someone who cares as
much about me as they do the
holiday, like I have in previous
years. If you have that special
person, then congrats! I truly
am happy for you and hope
that one day I will be spending
this holiday with someone
special, too.
My advice to the single
ladies out there is to use this
time to focus on YOU. Don’t
worry about finding that
significant other, because he
or she will come when you’re
least expecting it. Find yourself
before trying to find someone
else. Don’t be afraid of being
alone because sometimes that
is exactly what you need, some
time to yourself. Do the things
you wouldn’t get to if you were
tied down. Your main goal
should be finding happiness,
not finding love, because in
happiness there is love. So be
crazy, be reckless, but protect
your heart. And don’t let
holidays bring you down.
“Find yourself before
trying to find someone
else. Don’t be afraid
of being alone because
sometimes that is exactly
what you need, some
[time to yourself.”

Kathy: You know it Haha.
Ur It: Showering... morning
skin dries out if you shower to
much.
Ur It: Really? So me
showering once sometimes
Amethyst
Hello UR IT readers!
This month our
gemstone is amethyst.
With the deep juicy
purple color that has
captivated royalty, biblical scholar,
commoner and merchant, we will
tell you a folklore and fact about
the magnificat gemstone.
The word amethyst
translated from the Greeks
means “not drunken” and the
folklore behind this meaning
is the following. Dionysus was
the Greek god of wine and
loved grape juice, but after a
few goblets he would become
confrontational. One day while
in the forest the not so steady
Dionysus, with his goblet in hand,
felt insulted by a passing mortal
who didn’t show him what he felt
was the proper respect. Feeling
wrathful, Dionysus swore revenge
on the next passing mortal.
Amethyst, a beautiful young
maiden, on her way to pay tribute
to the goddess Diana, became
his target. Dionysus summoned
two ferocious tigers to devour
the girl. Amethyst cried out to
Diana and the goddess, seeing
what was about to happen,
transformed Amethyst into a
beautiful glimmering white quartz
statue. Dionysus, realizing his
ruthlessness, began to weep with
sorrow. His tears dripped into his
goblet as he collapsed, spilling
his tear stained wine onto the
statue of Amethyst. The white
quartz absorbed the color of the
wine creating the gem that is
referred to today as Amethyst,
the gemstone of the gods.
Amethyst is also known as the
“papal stone” and even today bishops
wear amethyst rings. The purple
color was also very important in the
decorating of the Catholic churches of
the middle ages. This beautiful stone
was also thought to render a person
shrewd in business, keep soldiers from
harm, and assist hunters in capturing
their prey.
FEBRUARY HOROSCOPES
-Aquarius & Pisces -
Romance is on the agenda as February begins.
The new moon will prompt open-hearted,
generous feelings that yearn to express
love. A creative project might be completed
during this time, and if so you’ll feel especially
confident and optimistic about its success.
On February 11, Mercury turns direct in Aquarius
after having been retrograde since January 21. When
Mercury Retrograde ends, you’ll have a green light to
move forward with contracts, negotiations and major
decisions. If you have waited patiently to purchase
any electronic device or other big ticket item, now
you’re fee to acquire it without worry.
A New Moon in the very last degree and minutes
of Aquarius on February 18 suggests extraordinary
power in your ability to manifest your greatest wish.
Now you can plant those seeds again and know the
second chance to realize this dream is well within
your reach.
On February 19, Mars enters Aries (remaining there
until March 31), and on February 20 Venus follows
suit (remaining there until March 17). This cosmic
duo will heat up your love life, and it will spark you
to pursue whatever else it is you’re most passionate
about! An exact conjunction on February 22 will be
one of the sexiest days of the year!
AQUARIUS (JAN’ 20 - FEB’ 18)
Those born under the Aquarius sign are generally
erratic. Their behavior and temperament are so
unpredictable that it is impossible to define their
personality type. However, they usually make
wonderful first impressions. At first sight, an
Aquarius will come across as a most charming
and well-mannered person. People find them
very interesting company as they are active and
adventurous by nature.
PISCES (FEB’ 19 - MAR’ 20)
Gifted with a wild imagination, Pisceses have
an unrivalled talent for story telling or anything
artistic for that matter. They also have a great
capacity for love and the depth with which they
feel sometimes makes them extremely sensitive.
So be very careful when relating to a loved one
born under the Pisces zodiac sign as a harmless
remark can prove to be incredibly hurtful to
them.
