Cultural policy
deferred
According to those
privy to details of the
policy, the biggest bone
of contention is its recommendation
to decentralize
the Kannada and
culture department.
Till date, the Congress
government,
despite its secular credentials,
seems to have
found no time to give
the draft a read. All ministers
who attended the
cabinet meeting on May
23 admitted to not having
read it. The Karnataka
government seems
to be in no hurry to implement
the state’s culture
policy drafted by
the committee headed
by writer BargurRamachandrappa
which has
recommended a secular
approach towards
the arts.
No Truth in HDK’s Charges:
Top Cop N S Megharikh
By our Special
Correspondent:
It appears the issue
of Savitha refuses
to die down. Yesterday
Ex CM H D Kumaraswamy
sternly
warned the state
Gov’t to take action
against the police
who allegedly harassed
the lady. Our
Special Correspondent
spoke with the
city police commissioner
N S Megharikh
in this regard.
The top cop denied
allegations of harassment
against the
lady and categorically
denied that she
was tortured while
in detention. Speaking
with our correspondent
near CM’s
home office Krishna,
the police commissioner
further said
that the charges levelled
by HDK are far
from truth. He said
the lady in question
Savitha was kept in
safe custody as she
was giving confusing
information and
details about her.
The top cop’s reaction
to HDK’s allegations
has given
a new turn to the
story. Savitha, a resident
of Hosahalli,
had gone to CM’s Janata
Darshan to meet
the Chief Minister on
May 17. However, she
was not let to meet
the CM till 8 PM by
the police personnel
present. Later, she
Alchemist Air Ambulance crash lands in South-West Delhi
The 27-year old
plane belonging
Chandigarh-based
to
private operator Alchemist
Airways had
to force land after
both its engines failed.
Aviation regulator
DGCA has started an
inquiry into the incident.
The six-seater
Beech King Air C-90A
aircraft crash landed
at around 2:40 PM in
a field in Kair village
in Najafgarh, about
10 km from the Indira
Gandhi international
Airpor. The plane was
coming from Patna
with a patient, who
had suffered a brain
stroke, and six others
on board crash landed
in Najafgarh area of
South West Delhi after
both its engines shut
down one after the
other but all passengers
escaped unhurt.
61-year-old patient
VirenderRai, who was
being flown to Delhi,
Gurgaon immediately
after the mishap.Rai
said doctors. “His condition
team has evaluated
him, and for now he
is being observed for
residual damage from
the stroke. Doctors
will decide on the
Indian education system
is in danger
JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya
Kumar today hit out at Prime
Minister NarendraModi, saying he
and HRD Minister SmritiIrani are
trying to destroy India’s education
system.
Kanhaiya also alleged that Modi
led Central government was militarising
university campuses in the
name of security.
The 29-year-old researcher said
“the idea of India is being challenged.”
Track student
performance by mid
June: HRD
The Union HRD ministry is planning
to launch a unique scheme to
track the academic performance of
school children across the country
and also identify the dropouts. This
programme next month that would
probably be the world’s largest student
tracking systemThe scheme has
been named ‘Shaala ASMITA’, an acronym
for All School Monitoring Individual
Tracking and Analysis.
Under this online system,
data related to all
schools will be collected
with the assistance of
local and state administration
and their performance
will be monitored,
official sources said.
It is a simple process
under which the Aadhaar
number or a specially
generated number will
be used to track a child’s progress,
officials said.
“People learn from education and
can express dissent and ask questions.
They no longer remain students
but become prospective political
opponents,” he said.
“If SmritiIrani claims to be our
mother, why did she not feel hurt
when students were being arrested,
why did she not come to our rescue.
On the other hand, she seems to have
instigated action against students,”
Kanhaiya added.
The HRD ministry is getting support
of the states for this unique
initiative and it is expected that the
scheme will be launched by mid-June.
It is expected that this new scheme
will also help in providing accurate
data about schools and better monitoring
of different programmes
including the
Mid-Day meal scheme
month
The programme aims
to track the educational
journey of close to 25
crore school students
from Class I to Class XII
across 15 lakh schools
in the country. In other
words, this online database will carry
information about student attendance
and enrolment, mid-day meal
service, learning outcomes and infrastructural
facilities, among other
things, on one platform for both private
and government schools. Asmita
stands for All School Monitoring, Individual
Tracing Analysis.
Ministry officials are learnt to have
made a presentation on SAY at the
Prime Minister’s office. We have the
go-ahead from the PMO and should
launch. The success of the programme
hinges on states participation
as local authorities will have to
feed data on a daily basis in the online
tracking system. The Centre claims
that all states are on board. This system
will, say, help track leakages and
corruption in mid-day meals.
said a hospital official.
The other passengers
were taken to a
nearby government
hospital for medical
examination. The six
other onboard included
Rupesh (doctor),
Jung Bahadur (aircraft
technician), Juhi and
BhagwanRai (both relatives
of the patient),
Amit Kumar (pilot)
and Rohit (co-pilot).
After receiving news
of the crash landing,
Rao Tula Ram Hospital
in Najafgarh had
prepared a 10-bed
emergency bay.
ATC sources said
the first engine of
the plane stopped
working at 2:22 PM,
prompting the commander
to seek emergency
landing. A little
later at 2:35 PM, the
pilot-in command reported
that the second
engine had also
President Pranab Mukherjee
President Pranab Mukherjee arrived in Guanzhou
on Tuesday, on a four-day visit to China. The
visit will see significant political and economic
push to bilateral ties while irritants like Beijing’s
opposition to India’s membership of NSG
and the blocking of UN bid to blacklist JeM chief
MasoodAzhar as a global terrorist will also figure.
Bilateral ties have been on an upswing since Xi’s
landmark India visit in September, 2014 during
which both countries had signed 12 agreements
and China pledged an investment of USD 20 billion
in India’s infrastructure sector. Prime Minister
NarendraModi had visited China in May last year
during which both sides had resolved to further
deepen ties in a range of areas. However, irritants
in ties cropped recently after China blocked India’s
move to get a UN ban on Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)
chief Azhar and opposed granting India membership
of NSG, saying it must sign the Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT) to get an entry into the 48-member
group.Mukherjee, who is making his first visit
to China as President, has made a number of trips
to this country in various capacities including as
Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and
Defence Minister.
India had countered the Chinese contention of
signing NPT before becoming a member of NSG
as “confusion” as NPT allows civil nuclear cooperation
with non-NPT countries. Ahead of his state
visit to China, Mukherjee had told the Chinese
state-run television that India seeks a fair, reasonable
and mutually acceptable settlement of the
boundary question which will help in achieving
full potential of Sino-India relationship. “We seek
a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement
of the boundary question and, pending the
boundary settlement, to maintain peace and tranquillity
in border areas. Both sides should strive to
ensure that outstanding issues are addressed in a
manner that demonstrates mutual sensitivity to
each other’s concerns, interests and aspirations,”
he had said last week. He had also said China joining
hands with India in the fight against terrorism
will have “its own impact”, indicating that the two
countries must comer together to deal with the
challenge. The comments came against the backdrop
of Beijing blocking India’s bid to put Azhar on
the UN list of proscribed terrorists.
In Guangzhou, the highly industrialised city
in China
failed.
Two minutes later,
the aircraft lost radar
and VHF contact as
well, the sources said,
adding the ATC received
a phone call at
2:40 PM that the aircraft
had crash landed.
In a similar incident
in December last yeara
small 20-year-old BSF
plane had crashed
near Dwarkain which
all 10 on board were
killed.
A DGCA official said
the final investigation
will be conducted by
the Aircraft Accident
Investigation Bureau
(AAIB).
in China, Mukherjee will address the India-China
Business Forum in which some top Indian industrialists
will also be present.Guangzhou is the
capital of Guangdong province in southern coastal
China that contributes 12 per cent of the country’s
GDP and is home to a wide-ranging set of multinational
and Chinese corporations.
President Pranab Mukherjee will arrive in Beijing
on Thursday where he will meet with President
Xi Jinping and other top Chinese leadership
including Premier Li Keqiang and National People’s
Congress Chairman Zhang Dejiang.
In discussions with the Chinese leadership, the
issues of Chinese reservations on India’s membership
in the Nuclear Supplier Group and the UN ban
on Azhar are expected to figure prominently. Ahead
of his state visit to China, Mukherjee had told the
Chinese state-run television that India seeks a fair,
reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement of
the boundary question which will help in achieving
full potential of Sino-India relationship.
Bilateral ties have been on an upswing since Xi’s
Greek police
move immigrants
Greek police transferred
some two thousand
migrants out of
the overcrowded camp
of Idomeni, launching
a major operation to
clear up the squalid
tent city where thousands
fleeing war and
poverty have lived for
months. By evening
the officials had put
2,031 people on buses
to newly opened camps
near Greece’s second
city Thessaloniki, about
80 kilometres to the
south. The group transferred
yesterday included
662 Syrians, 1,273
Kurds and 96 Yazidis.
The transfer comes after
a brutal winter of
freezing rain and mud
which saw many people
trying to force their
way across the border,
sometimes resulting in
violent encounters with
Macedonian police.
DIY Abortion
in texas
Restrictive laws took
hold in Texas in 2013,
forcing so many clinic
closings that fewer than
20 remain to serve 5.4
million women of reproductive
age.
Experts say that if the
U.S. Supreme Court upholds
Texas’s restrictive
abortion laws, the numbers
of self-induced
abortions will escalate.
So far, the number of
Texas women who have
taken that option could
be as high as 1,00,000
to 2,40,000, depending
on how it is calculated.
forensics
officials have
examined the human
remain retrieved from
the crash site of Egypt
suggest that there must
be a blast in the plain.
Egypt Air 804 allegedly
still remains
a mystery. After the
intense joint search
of the both the governments
in the Mediterranean
found the wreckage
floating some 500 km
away from the shore.
Much later the rescue
team recovered
some human remains
and brought them for
test. There seems to
be occurrences that
suggest the symptoms
of blast in the flight.
Forensics expert
The flight samples also
point towards this.
This confirms the official
version which said
the logical explanation
was that an explosion
brought it down.
The special investigating
team on Egyptian
flight could not
reveal much information
because they
were not authorized to
release. But still they
analysed the findings
and said that there
was a blast in the plain.
They could only retrieve
some small pieces
of flesh. They did
not even get a full part
a leg or hand. It lead
them to analyse the accident
in a partial manner.
Egyptian authorities
could not link
the accident with the
hard evidence is found
to come to a conclusion
of the accident.
According to Cairo
Daily, a newspaper in
Cairo quoted an unnamed
forensics official
in its Tuesday edition
as saying the plane
blew up in midair but
that it has yet to be
Sri Lanka gets flooded that caused landslides
and much damage to the properties.
Death toll rises to more than 100.
According to the Disaster Management
Center (DMC) the death toll crossed more
than 100. Even after the week of time still
100 people are missing in the most affected
area of Kegalle. The rain also damaged
properties across the island. The normal life
in many part of the country is affected.
The landslide caused more fear trap. People
are still hoping to find someone alive
under the heap of mud. The government yet
to remove more than 100 tons of mud to recover
bodies and alive people if anyone left.
The flood water have receded across the
country. As the result the DMC found more
than 530 houses have been completely destroyed
and another 4000 partly damaged.
People taken to the rescue places started
to return to their homes. They are still worried
about their new start. Some lost all of
their belongings and hard earned treasures.
collected.
Family members
of the passengers too
were invited to give
DNA samples. Thus
they wanted to identify
the remains of
their kin. But this is
also to be noted that
no bodies have been
recovered so far as
whole. When asked to
the officials regarding
if a body recovered
they refused to
give information on it.
Egypt has already
sent a submarine to
search for the flight’s
black box. Analyzing
the black box they can
take a final decision
what could have happened
in reality. This
is also important to
know that the backup
power in the black
box remains only for
30 days. After that the
black box stops sending
signals. Locating
it would be a problem
if the search delayed.
Other countries
like Britan, Cyprus,
France, Greece and the
United States are also
extended their help
in the search of debris
and black boxes.
According to the officials figures, one
third of Colombo’s 650000 residents were
driven out of their homes due to the flood.
The Sri Lankan Government has estimated
the loss and promised people to compensate
their loss. No detailed amounts has
been announced yet. Sri Lanka’s parliament
has been called before the scheduled time
to discuss about the flood relief. This is the
highest record of rain in last 25 years.
Soldiers and relief workers were seen
distributing essential supplies to people
cleaning up their homes in low-lying areas
of Colombo.
The flood water flowing to the Indian
Ocean across the Colombo brought all the
garbage and sewage along with it. People
fear outbreak of new disease. The government
has already sent the hospital crew to
examine the situation and to take care of the
people.
US Lawmakers question India’s
plans for Chabahar port
US senators addressed on
Tuesday whether India’s development
of a port in southern
Iran for exchange access gambled
disregarding global assents
and a state department official
guaranteed them the organization
would closely examine the
project. US lawmakers question
“We need to inspect the points
of interest of the chabahar declaration
to see where it falls in that
place,” she vouched for the senate
foreign Relations Committee.
US lawmakers question
“we have been clear with the
Indians about proceeding with
limitations on exercises as for
Iran,” Nisha Desai Biswal, Assistant
secretary of state for south
and central Asian Affairs, said on
Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi on Monday pledged up to
$500 million to develop the Iranian
port of Chabahar, to give
India a trade access to Iran, Afghanistan
and central Asia.
The United States and Europe
had lifted sanctions in January
under a deal with Iran to limit
its nuclear program but some
restrictions to trade remain, tied
to issues such as human rights
and terrorism.

South Korea’s Mando plans to supply
parts for Tesla’s Model 3
Sony’s profit shakes as
Mando Corp
(204320.KS) is in talks
with Tesla Motors (TS-
LA.O) to supply parts
for its Model 3 car as
it seeks to join other
South Korean firms
supplying modules for
Tesla’s more affordable
electric cars, an industry
source said.
Mando, which makes
steering, brake and
suspension parts, currently
supplies steering
racks for Tesla’s Model
S vehicles.
The source did not
provide any details on
the parts that Mando
would supply for the
cheaper Model 3, citing
confidentiality. While
Tesla spokesperson
was not immediately
available for comment,
Mando spokesman declined
to comment.
South Korea’s Maeil
Business Newspaper
reported on Monday
that Mando had been
chosen by Tesla to
develop and supply
self-driving car technology
and parts, pushing
up Mando’s share price.
Asked to comment, a
Tesla spokesperson in
San Francisco said “The
rumors are not true.
Tesla currently sources
steering racks for its
Model S vehicles from
Mando. It does not supply
autonomous technology
systems.”
Mando has two U.S.
factories in Alabama
and Georgia, catering
to demand from Hyundai
Motor (005380.KS),
General Motors (GM.N)
and Chrysler.
By 2020, the company
aims to generate
half of its revenue from
next-generation products,
including semi-automated
driver assistant
systems similar to
Hyundai Motor’s Genesis
G90 luxury sedan.
“Tesla is turning to
South Korean parts
makers, which are
more cost-competitive
than Japanese rivals, as
the electric car start-up
plans to drastically cut
costs for the cheaper
Model 3,” said Eim Eunyoung,
an auto analyst
at Samsung Securities.
LG Display (034220.
KS) and Hankook Tire
(161390.KS) are among
the few South Korean
firms which plan to
supply their products
for the Model 3, sources
have said.
Tesla has taken
373,000 orders for
the Model 3 - which
has a starting price of
$35,000, about half the
cost of its Model S - and
has said it will begin delivering
in late 2017.
Sony forecasts
weak profit growth
after an earthquake
in April halted production
at a key manufacturing
plant.
The Japanese
tech-giant expects a
2% rise in operating
profits to 300bn yen
($2.75bn; £1.89bn) for
the year to March 2017.
However, this was well
below the estimated
figure of 409bn yen.
Sony delayed its
forecasts by about a
month to gauge the impact
of the earthquake
in the city of Kumamoto.
The Kumamoto
plant is one of five
factories that makes
the image sensors for
Sony’s smartphones.
Sony estimated the
impact of that the
quake would cut operating
profits at its
image sensor and digital
camera productions
by about 105bn
yen. The company also
predicted that net income
would sink by
nearly 46% to 80bn
yen, mainly due to an
exceptional gain in the
previous year from
the sale of Olympus
shares and the changes
in taxation. Earnings
at Sony have been revived
in recent quarters,
helped by strong
sales of its famous line
of PlayStation 4 video
games. The company
has also reversed losses
at its mobile communications
division
after improvements in
its product mix and restructuring
measures.
Spotify paves more loss as
A federal judge is
to get an update on
ongoing settlement
talks in the Volkswagen
emissions cheating
scandal after announcing
a indefinite
deal last month for
nearly half a million
polluting Volkswagens
in the U.S.
Attorneys for Volkswagen
and Volkswagen
owners filed
a schedule for Tuesday’s
hearing before
Senior U.S. District
Court Judge Charles
Breyer that includes
reports on discussions
over roughly
482,000 Volkswagens
with 2-liter, four-cylinder
diesel engines.
The agenda does
not stipulate whether
the parties have
reached agreement on
more terms that will
be disclosed in court.
The judge has put the
attorneys order on restrain
that prevents
them from discussing
the settlement talks.
The judge set a June
21 deadline for attorneys
from the U.S. Justice
Department and
for Volkswagen owners
to file additional
paperwork about the
tentative agreement.
The deal that was
announced did not
cover Volkswagen,
Audi and Porsche
diesel vehicles with
3-liter, six-cylinder
engines an additional
90,000 or so
vehicles. It also did
not cover potential
fines and penalties.
The misconduct
erupted in September
when it was
learned that the German
automaker had
equipped many of its
cars with software to
fool emissions tests
and had put dirty vehicles
on the road.
Spotify witnessed
revenues reaching
upto €1.95bn ($2.2bn;
£1.5bn) over the past
year, but the Swedish
music streaming
platform has still
not made a profit.
Losses intensified
as the industry leader,
offered music over the
internet for free with
advertisements for
a fixed monthly rate.
Revenue increased
by 80% over the past
year, beating the 45%
growth rate of 2014
by a wide margin but
Net losses increased
by 7% from the previous
year to €173m.
Spotify’s main expenses
are royalties
paid to artists. It said
its revenue from advertisements
had
nearly doubled while
its user base had also
grown significantly.
It had 89 million
active monthly users
by the end of 2015, 28
million of which were
paid subscribers. Spotify,
long at the forefront
of online music
streaming, said it was
prioritizing investment,
as it faces increasing
competition.
Apple had launched
its own music streaming
service in 2015,
while Rhapsody and
Deezer who were two
other companies offering
a similar service.
As the industry
leader, the firm has received
a lot of criticism
from artists who argue
that the royalties they
receive from streaming
are not fair enough,
and that streaming
platforms fail to
support new artists.
It has led to some
big names like Taylor
Swift, Adele and
Radiohead keeping
some or all of their
music off the service
on this platform.
TECHNOLOGY
Google to introduce Password-Free Logins
on Android Platform
Google is planning
to bring Password-Free
Logins to
Android by 2016 End.
Google at its annual
developer conference
last year disclosed plans
to get rid of passwords
in favour of a new system
dubbed ‘Project
Abacus’ that will verify
user’s identity based on
various patterns. At I/O
2016, Dan Kaufman,
Director of Google’s
ATAP team, in a low
profile announcement
updated about the project
saying that it will
be available to developers
by end of 2016.
To recall, ‘Project
Abacus’ was initially
introduced by Google
last year and was
seen as an improvement
over two-factor
authentication. Google
had announced that
the project was in trials
and it tied up with 33
universities to test this
feature. The company
had stressed that passwords
are hard to remember
and the ‘Project
Abacus’ was said to
be aimed at learning
the user patters such
as typing, walking, location,
and much more.
According to a report
by TechCrunch,
Kaufman has confirmed
that with ‘Project
Abacus’, users can
unlock a device or
sign-in to an app based
on “Trust Score.” The
score is calculated by
various user patterns.
Detailing about the
project, Kaufman said,
“We have a phone, and
these phones have all
these sensors in them.
Why couldn’t it just
know who I was, so I
don’t need a password?
I should just be able to
work.” He added that
engineers at Google
have turned the “Trust
Score” to “Trust API.”
Google will test the
“Trust API” with “several
very large financial
institutions” next
month. “And assuming
it goes well, this should
become available to every
Android developer
around the world by the
end of the year,” the report
quoted Kaufman.
Launch of HTC 10 in India
on 26 May 2016
It is widely expected
that the HTC will be
launching its latest flagship
smartphone, the
HTC 10, in India.
The HTC 10 smartphone
was announced
globally in April, powered
by a Snapdragon
820. However, the
company listed another
smartp
h o n e
called HTC
10 Lifestyle
in India,
which
houses a
Snapdragon
652
SoC under
the hood.
This created
quite
s o m e
noise. The
company
later
attempted
to clarify that the
‘global variant’ will be
headed to India - but it
is still imprecise what
that means. It is not
known whether HTC
will be looking forward
to launch the HTC 10 or
HTC 10 Lifestyle variant
in India, or both.
The HTC 10 runs on
Android 6.0 Marshmallow
out-of-the-box,
alongside 4GB of RAM
(3GB on the HTC 10
Lifestyle). The smartphone
sports a 5.2-inch
Quad HD (1440x2560
pixels) Super LCD 5 display
with a pixel density
of 564ppi. It is powered
by a Snapdragon
820 SoC (Snapdragon
652 on the HTC 10 Lifestyle)
The smartphone
sports a 12-UltraPixel
laser autofocus camera
with dual tone LED
flash with BSI sensor,
and optical image stabilization
(OIS). The
HTC 10 Lifestyle bears
a sapphire lens for the
rear camera in addition.
It has a sportive
5-megapixel front-facing
camera featuring
autofocus with BSI sensor,
optical image stabilization
(OIS) and auto
selfie.
The HTC 10 will be
available
in 32GB
and 64GB
(only 32GB
available
on HTC 10
Lifestyle)
inbuilt
storage
options
with an expandable
feature via
microSD
card (up
to 2TB).
REAL STAR IN
HORROR THRILLER
KALPANA-2
TITHI WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES TO
BE RELEASED ON JUNE 3
Producer ShilpaSrinivas who produced the
movie “Upendra” will be back with Kalpana 2, the
rights of which were bought by actor Upendra.
Upendrawill soon star in Kalpana 2, a horror
thriller directed byNaganna. Kalpana 2 is a
remake of Kanchana 2, a horror-comedy franchise
by actor-filmmaker,RaghavaLawerence.
Upendra who enjoyed working in part
1 of the franchise in Kannada, directed by
Ramnarayan is gearing up for Kalpana 2.
With this film, Naganna who was appreciated
for his directorial film KrantiVeeraSangoliRayanna
with Darshan is
collaborating with Upendra for the fifth
time. The previous filmswere Kutumba,
Gokarna, Gowramma and Dubai Babu.
“Currently, the director is doing his
preparations from his end and plans to
officially announce the project in the
days to come,” our sources tells us.This
horror film will be yet another experimental
outing for the actor-director.
Tithi written by Ere Gowda and co-written
by Raam, Thithi is a dramatic comedy
about how three generations of sons react to
the death of the oldest in their clan, a man
named Century Gowda: a locally renowned,
highly cantankerous 101-year-old man.
Produced by Pratap Reddy and Sunmin Park,
Thithi was screened in over 12 prestigious
international and national film festivals and
won 13 awards. The movie started its journey
at the prestigious Work-in-Progress Lab
(WIP) at the NFDC Film Bazaar, 2014 where
it was declared the Best WIP Fiction Feature.
Set in a small village in Karnataka, the
three storylines intertwine before converging
at Century Gowda’s “thithi” the final
funeral celebration, 11 days after a death.
The film was released by Suresh Movies
in Karnataka on May 6 and has got a tremendous
response in its home territory.
Live Show
Raam Reddy’s National Award-winning
feature film Tithi is now set to hit
screens in major cities on June 3, after
winning international acclaim and a successful
theatrical release in Karnataka.
“Now in its third week, Thithi is still
running housefull in urban centers and I
couldn’t be happier with the response. Hollywood
and Bollywood have dubbed Thithi
as a universal ‘world film’. After seeing the
unprecedented response to Sairat, running
with English subtitles for national audiences,
I can’t wait to see the response to
Thithi nationally,” Raam said in a statement.
Surprisingly this Kannada film will be releasing
with English subtitles on June 3.
“Thithi has seen amazing organic growth
and has grown from strength to strength.
National support and praise from people
like AnuragKashyap and other top national
industry leaders has been incredibly
encouraging,” the film-maker has said.
One of the most
noted heartthrobs of
his generation, Johnny
Depp was looking
smoking hot as he
puffed away on a cigarillo
as he arrived for
an interview on Jimmy
Kimmel Live in Los
Angeles on Monday.
The caribbean star
looked in a fine mood
as he pranced around
the parking lot as he
headed into the bustling
studio inside the
famous Hollywood
Masonic Temple.
The actor, who became
a teen idol for
his turn in hit TV
show 21 Jump Street,
was looking good for a
52-year-old in a stylish
leather jacket, black
shirt, baggy jeans
and leather boots.
He enhanced his
look by wearing a variety
of exotic necklaces,
a few dishevelled
neckerchiefs
and a pair of stylish
aviator sunglasses.
Johnny was greeted
by some friends as he
appeared out from his
vehicle puffing away
on his cigarillo, and
saluted the fans before
heading inside.
Given his corrosive
style, viewers will be
hoping Jimmy quizzes
his guest on his infamous
speech on the
dangers of bringing
unquarantined animals
into Australia.
Last month his much
younger wife Amber
Heard, 30, was let off
with a good behaviour
bond last month after
she pleaded guilty
to falsifying travel
documents to sneak
their two Yorkshire
Terriers, Pistol and
Boo, into the country
when Depp was filming
the latest Pirates
of the Caribbean film.
once more stole the
show at the Vogue
an absolute sheer
The mother of
all to their imagination
in her skin
baring dress, which
she enhanced with
a khaki belt, platform
sandals, neutral
makeup and
slicked-back hair.
Kim attended the
all black to allow his
steal the spotlight.

Chris Gayle not
signed by Melbourne
Renegades for the
2016/17 season of the
Big Bash League, after
Gayle was involved in a
fresh sexism row.
The decision was
confirmed by Melbourne
Renegades’
chief executive Stuart
Coventry.
Gayle also faces
possible condemnation
from his English
county club Somerset
when he arrives in the
UK following his latest
controversial remarks
to a female journalist
in that country. He has
since said the comments
were made in
jest to have a bit of fun.
At one point in the
interview, Gayle told
the journalist he has
“a very, very big bat,
the biggest in the
wooooorld,” adding:
“You think you could
lift it? You’d need two
hands.”
“We’ll unveil our international
signings
soon but Chris isn’t
part of those plans,”
Coventry was quoted
as saying by cricket.
com
Gayle is currently
playing for Royal
Challengers Bangalore
in the Indian Premier
League.
The only ones hurted
in Bangalore last
night were the Gujarat
Lions. Or probably
AB had just left them
numb and lifeless.
The elation in the
RCB camp though was
justified. De Villiers
had pulled one out of
the hat for his team
after all, yet again,
with a masterful unbeaten
47-ball 79. At
29/5, chasing 159 and
with DhawalKulkarni
having sent every big
name sans de Villiers
back to the dug-out.
Lions seemed to
have more than one
paw into the final.
No team in IPL history
had recovered
After an intense
battle of more than
30 days and a grueling
schedule, these
teams have managed
to make it so far. The
journey so far wasn’t
by any means a cake
walk with most teams
making it by the skin
of their teeth.
Hunger, desire and
will to win were the
determining factors
in the end in a contest
of evenly-matched
outfits, as teams who
needed it the most
have survived to leave
another day.
As the IPL takes a
breather ahead of the
play-offs, we look back
at the factors that
made these two teams
from such a hole to
win a match before.
Over the last few
weeks, ViratKohli has
been the only topic
that’s mattered with
regards to RCB or
maybe the IPL on the
whole. But throughout,
like always, he’s
continued to maintain
that he was still only
second-best to his Bangalore
teammate he
A d o r e s .
In the first playoff
between the top two
teams in IPL 9, AB gave
Kohli enough reason to
gush and jump about
in the dug-out by playing
one of the more
remarkable comefrom-behind
innings
the IPL has witnessed.
The abundance of
wickets lost meant
that AB simply couldn’t
get out but the increasing
required run-rate
meant that calculated
risks still had to be
attempted. And he did
just that rather nonchalantly.
He always
seemed to know which
ball deserved to be hit
to the fence-which he
did duly-and when it
was prudent to simply
push it into the outer
reaches of the Chinnaswamy
Stadium to
steal a quick two. In
between, AB and Iqbal
Abdulla, who came
to the fore as an able
and more importantly
composed ally, even
played out two overs
from RavindraJadeja
and Dwayne Bravo
that went for seven in
all. ShadabJakati had
bowled two shocking
overs and gone for 29
runs. Suresh Raina
still had to complete
that quota. AB lay in
wait for the Lions’
skipper to throw him
the gauntlet. It first
came in the form of
Dwayne Smith, who
had earlier been the
singular reason for Gujarat
making a match
of it with the bat after
their early collapse.
Time for finals:
sail through, Sunrisers
Hyderabad and Kolkata
Knight Riders who
will fight it out in the
play-offs to take another
crucial step towards
the trophy.
Failing to qualify
for the play-offs for
two straight seasons
meant Sunrisers Hyderabad
were often
overlooked when possible
candidates for
the play-offs in IPL 9
were discussed. They
did little to change
that belief after starting
off with two defeats,
firstly to a Kohli-
De Villiers inspired
RCB and secondly to
the seasoned Kolkata
Knight Riders.
However,
sometimes
greater challenges
seem to bring
out the best in teams,
and that’s what happened
with Sunrisers,
suddenly SRH had a
winning equation.
Eight wins in ten
games had Sunrisers
on the brink of the
play-offs after a long
wait, before Nehra’s
injury slightly affected
the rhythm of
the Sunrisers. For all
their consistency, SRH
had to settle for third
place for perhaps letting
their foot off the
gas a bit in the end.
The IPL is quite unforgiving
and Sunrisers
must pull their socks
up again, before the
eliminator.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Been there, done
that! It was normal
business for Kolkata
Knight Riders as they
geared up for the 9th
edition of the IPL.
Strong, well-balanced
squad, experience of
winning the trophy
and a favourites tag.
That was all that the
Knight Riders were so
used to.
And the season
began in spectacular
fashion, as KKR
trumped Delhi Daredevils
at fortress Eden
Gardens and justify
their favourites tag
straight away. Twin
defeats to Mumbai
Indians meant that
His pace was best
suited for AB to launch,
which he did, taking
him for 14 runs.
KKR’s momentum was
broken twice, still the
2014 champions were
still well-placed to
make the play-offs after
six games.
However, KKR’s
season failed to hit
top gear, as constant
speed-breakers hurt
their progress. Two
defeats, at first to Gujarat
Lions, and then
Royal Challengers
Bangalore threatened
to leave KKR too far
behind in the race for
the play-offs. But every
time GautamGambhir’s
men had their
backs to the wall, they
managed to produce
the goods.
At this point, with a
drizzle in the air, RCB
were 16 runs adrift
of their DL score. The
next over with 49 requiring
of the last five,
Raina went to Jakati.
Checkmate Lions.
AB and Abdulla took
the left-arm spinner
apart, taking him for
16 runs. AB started
the next over from
Praveen Kumar with
a brutal strike over
the deep mid-wicket
fence before delicately
reverse-sweeping
an attempted yorker
through the point region
for four. Raina
and his Lions just
stood in shock, staring
into the floodlights
as if they didn’t know
what had hit them.
At one point his
figures read 4/6. But
unfortunately, not for
the first time, Kulkarni
didn’t quite finish
as the highlight of the
evening. Instead as
the match drew to a
close, he lay prone in
front of the RCB dugout
trying in vain to
stop one of Abdulla’s
three boundaries.
By then he and
his team had been silenced
for good and
the only thing reverberating
around Chinnaswamy
were manic
chants of ABD, ABD.
KKR were in a spot
of bother while chasing
a target of 66 from
nine overs in a rain-affected
clash with Rising
Pune Supergiants.
Last year, they
fluffed it in the end
when play-offs spot
seemed like a cakewalk,
this time, they
made sure the mistake
wasn’t repeated.
It’s been a thrilling
ride for both these
teams. A real test of
their physical as well
as mental character.
Rio winners will be considered
for KhelRatna, Arjuna
Often flayed for acting
too late to reward
athletes breaking their
backs in sports other
than cricket, the
sports Ministry has
announced on Tuesday
that winners at the Rio
Olympics will immediately
be considered for
this year’s KhelRatna
and Arjuna Awards.
The ministry said
the decision has been
taken so that athletes
need not wait for one
full year after their
medal-winning performances
at the Olympic
Games.
The medal winners
in individual events
who have already not
been conferred with
Rajiv Gandhi Khel-
Ratna in the past will
be considered for the
highest sporting honour.
“Medal winners in
team events, who have
played stellar roles in
the medal won by the
team for the country
in Rio Olympics 2016
such as number of
goals scored, number
of goals saved etc., and
who have already not
been conferred with
Arjuna Award in the
past will be considered
for Arjuna Awards,” the
Ministry said.
Ben Stokes undergoes
Surgery on Knee
Ben Stokes, the England
All-rounder has
undergone a surgery
on his left knee, the
England and Wales
Cricket Board (ECB)
confirmed on Tuesday
(May 24).
Stokes had injured
himself during the first
Test match against
Sri Lanka earlier this
month. Injured midway,
he played very
little part in the rest of
the test and was ruled
out of the series.
The all-rounder had
featured in 18 of England’s
previous Tests
running onto the first
against Sri Lanka and
had forged himself to
be an integral part of
Alastair Cook’s squad.
The injury to the 24-
year old will be a
cause of worry for all
invested parties including
his country
team, Durham, where
the Test against Sri
Lanka will be played.
The nature of the
torn cartilage in his
left knee is yet to be
known fully. “Full details
on the length of
his rehabitation will
be confirmed in due
course,” said a statement
from ECB.
England will be hoping
that Stokes’ rehabitation
will be quick
