Dear Charlotte and Surrounding Areas, 

Thank you for taking the time to look through our 2015 NARI 

(National Association of The Remodeling Contractor) of 

Greater Charlotte Directory. Within this directory you will find 

the best of the best in their specific specialty. If you’re looking 

for a plumber, heating and air contractor, suppliers, or general 

contractors, this book can help you identify a quality partner. 

NARI members are vetted by a group of their peers before they 

are allowed to join. NARI members also follow a code of ethics 

and an oath (listed in this directory). Members who do not 

follow these things are not eligible to renew their membership. 

We at NARI of Greater Charlotte take these things very seriously 

and analyze membership on a monthly basis. 

NARI also has many different certifications that our members 

can attain. These certifications are very difficult to achieve and 

can be used an example of the dedication our members have 

to their respective trades. Our chapter also has many 

National COTY (Contractor of the Year Awards) winners. Each 

year, our chapter has a local COTY awards in which the 

winners are presented in the Charlotte Observer. Many of the 

local members then get the opportunity to complete at the 

national level.

Some listings are highlighted in purple. These members belong to 

a group of remodelers who have achieved special designation by 

NARI. 

This signifies NARI Professional Certification. NARI Certification programs 

identify remodelers who have subjected themselves to detailed review and 

testing in areas of business management, ethical conduct, and technical 

skills. 

NARI certification offers the consumer assurance that he or she is choosing 

a professional with years of experience, dedication to ongoing training, 

and a commitment to ethical conduct. 

Some of the highlighted listings include abbreviations that designate 

special certifications.

These certifications include: 

• MCR= Master Certified Remodeler. 

The recipient of this prestigious certification has demonstrated 

involvement in the community, the remodeling industry, and 

continued competence in the performance of remodeling projects 

as specified by the Association’s Certification Board. 

• CR= Certified Remodeler 

Requires five years of remodeling experience and passing of an all 

day examination on 21 subsets of remodeling. 

• CKBR= Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler 

Requires five years of experience in the kitchen and bath industry 

and passing of an all day examination covering 10 subsets of the 

kitchen and bath industry. 

• CLC= Certified Lead Carpenter 

Requires five years experience with two being lead carpenter and 

passing of all day examination covering 19 subsets of carpentry. 

• GCP= Green Certified Professionals 

Requires five years of remodeling experience, continuing 

education and passing of an all day examination covering 16 

subsets of sustainable remodeling.

Selecting the Right Contractor 

When remodeling, it is important to pick the right professional. 

Design and function should be foremost in your mind. NARI is 

always the best place to begin your search. Remember, the 

NARI logo is a mark of professional. To ensure a success, you 

may want to look at the following alternatives to decide which 

approach is best for your project. 

1. Architect/Designer 

If your contractor does not provide design services, 

you may benefit from the assistance of 

professionally trained architect and/or a designer 

experienced with remodeling. A designer will be 

sensitive to the special challenges that a remodel 

presents, while clarifying the goals of your project 

and prioritizing your remodeling agenda. An 

architect can further assist you by recommending a 

competent general contractor, evaluating contract 

proposals for your job, and inspecting the progress 

of your job for compliance with building codes and job 

specifications. 

2. Contractor 

Many home improvements such as: porch construction, 

roofing, siding, and window replacement may not require 

professional design services and can easily be handled by an 

experienced, professional contractor. No matter how large or 

small, all projects need careful planning and attention to detail.

3. The Design/ Build Contractor 

This concept combines providing both quality design and 

construction services within the same general contracting 

company. A few of advantages of working with a design/build 

firm are: 

A design/build contractor knows his job costs, so 

throughout the design process, the project is 

engineered to fit your budget and needs. 

• The lines of communication that are developed in the 

design stage prepare the groundwork for a clear, 

well-run remodeling project. 

• When you contract with a professional design/build 

firm, you become part of a team whose goal is to design 

and construct a project that will fit your needs. 

Many, but not all, states 

require contractors to be 

licensed and/or bonded. 

All NARI members are 

licensed and/or registered 

as required by federal, state 

and local authorities and retain the proper insurance as 

required by law; contractors in most states are required to carry 

workman’s compensation, property damage, and personal 

liability insurance with their coverage meeting all the minimum 

requirements. Also, it is important to ask for customer 

references and to see finished projects. 

If you solicit bids from several different home improvement 

contractors, be sure that they are bidding on the same scope 

and quality of work. DO NOT blindly accept the lowest estimate. 

Often times, a higher price may be worth the cost of better 

materials and service. Remodeling is a permanent investment in 

the home in which you will spend countless hours. Always 

choose a company that makes you feel at ease and that is well

matched to the scope and complexity of your particular project. 

Detail what the contractor will and won’t do- such as protection 

of your household goods surrounding the job site and daily 

clean up upon completion of the job. Your contractor should 

detail a list of all materials for the project. This includes size, 

color, weight, model, brand name, quantity, and product. 

Make sure that the terms are spelled out in the contract. The 

total price, payment schedule, and cancellation policy, if there 

is one, should be clear. 

Think carefully before you sign a 

contract. If it is incomplete, 

don’t sign it. If an item you want 

isn’t written in the contract, you 

probably won’t get it. Warranties 

should be in writing. A warranty 

must be identified as either “Full” 

or “Limited”. If it is a “Full Warranty,” all faulty products must be 

repaired, replaced, or your money returned. If it is a “Limited 

Warranty,” this indicates all replacements and refunds of 

damaged products are limited in some regard. The name and 

address of the party who will honor the warranty must be 

identified. Make sure the time period is clearly specified for 

which the warranty is offered. Be sure that your contract with a 

professional remodeler spells out any code of permit 

restrictions, as well as any fees involved in the work on your 

home. Be sure to put all changes in writing if the scope of 

complexity of your remodeling project is modified while work 

is being done. A building permit generally is required 

whenever structural work is involved or when the basic living 

area of a home is to be changed. The complex details of local 

building codes and permits are familiar details to professional 

remodeling contractor. If you need help financing your 

remodel, many banks and finance companies offer financing 

plans that your contractor can often help you arrange.
