Welcome to the inaugural edition of the
East Texas Guide to Antiques, Treasures and More!
This unique antique and collecting guide will serve as a great companion as you navigate
your next treasure hunting journey.
The purpose of this guide was not intended to identify, or provide, any profound knowledge
of one type of collectible over another. Rather, this guide was designed to showcase
some of best antique and collectible businesses in East Texas, as well as direct the reader to
a few splendid eateries and lodging locations along the way. Readers will find the Antiques,
Treasures and More guide is compact and informative for collectors, buyers, and shoppers.
The effort to bring this publication to fruition has been a passionate and dedicated adventure
for us. Having traveled hundreds of miles, going to some of the big towns, and
down some of the little roads in East Texas, we discovered the best genuine and open-hearted
business owners you can imagine. These antique and collectible shop owners are “for
real!” They’re friendly, savvy, and ready to help you find just the right “one-of-a-kind.”
Having an eatery or lodging location in the guide for every town was not possible,
but in it you will find some of the best that East Texas has to offer and they are ready to
serve you!
Collecting antiques and sourcing other “treasures” has been a serious business for many,
and a joyful pastime for many more. It is an activity that can be appreciated on many levels,
from learning about the historical value of an item, to finding a remembered treasure “like
the one grandma had.” Antiquing and collecting can be fun solo or with family and friends.
Perhaps you will find that you have an interest in a certain type of collectible, (Author’s
note: Cheryl collects beaded purses. JoAnna has an “awww” moment for just about anything).
Whether you are a serious buyer or collector, or you enjoy “the dig for the rusty, dusty,”
you’ll find some of the best antiques right here in East Texas.
As you journey to the establishments in this guide, we’d love to hear about it. Just send
us an email to info@mainstreetmarketingtexas.com.
Each business in the guide is an example of the enterprising spirit we share here in East
Texas. We hope that you will take the time to shop, dine, stay, or just drop in and say hello
at these businesses. We know they will be glad to meet you, but fair warning, don’t blame
us if you end up staying a little bit longer than you planned. Yep, we got “the bug;” we
hope you will too!
Stop and Shop or have a Sammich at Nettie’s Nook
A visit to Nettie’s Nook and Sammich Shop in Center is a pleasing peek into the past. But
don’t let the word “nook” mislead you, this store is much more than a nook.
With over 8500 square feet of shopping, it has some of the best offerings in antiques and
collectibles you can find in East Texas, not to mention the store’s yummy “Sammich Shop.”
Located on the downtown square
in Center, owner Annette “Nettie”
Peters says “I feel at home
here,” and well she should - she
is a fourth generation Shelby
County native, daughter of Sue
Partin and the late Bear Kat
Partin. After finishing school in
Center, Annette pursued a ca-
reer away from Shelby County,
but family ties have brought
her back home.
“I saw an opportunity to be a part of the community when I purchased
the store. It really did speak to me.” Nettie considers herself an “old soul” and that is quite
obvious on any given day should you encounter her in the store. Often dressed in a “re-purposed”
garment and long granny bloomers, she is always friendly face for visitors. Nettie
loves what she does and it shows!
At Nettie’s Nook you’ll find antiques of all kinds, glassware, furniture, collectibles, furniture,
coins, baseball cards and so much more. Nettie says, “We’re a modern day dry
goods store, where you can get old and new things.”
The store also offers estate sales, appraisals (call for an appointment), vendor booth spaces,
and consignments. And don’t forget to sit a spell at the Sammich Shop!
lot of money, there are some great treasures
out there that are quite affordable, and you
can’t put a price on quality family time.
For the young child, shop for items such
and working toys like trucks and cars. These
items are often great bargains. The young
child will learn how to choose wisely and
spend wisely too. Just be sure that caution
is used when some items are brought home
as they might not be suitable for the very
young child, such as with marbles and small
parts. Additionally, choose a shopping location
that is child friendly, wide isles, good
Shop J & A, 4 Corners and 4 Corners 2 today!
A trip to Hemphill and Milam, Texas would not be complete without stopping at the
shops owned by Agnes Chambers.
“My Papaw who lived in Louisiana was in the garbage service business, and he’d bring
home all kinds of used items,” Agnes said. These “finds” still had value and brought enjoyment
to her life as well as her sister’s, Patsy Chambers, whom she affectionately calls her
“my partner in crime.” As an adult Agnes opened her first co-op in Bridge City. During this
time, Agnes made her first large antique purchase, a 1920s antique “Potty Chair.” Agnes
says “I fell in love with it, and regretted the day I sold it.”
In this business you often make life-long friendships, so when Agnes and her husband
retired, they made a move to Hemphill. “I opened a booth in the former Nethery’s antique
store in Milam, then opened my own shop in Milam. My friend, Jerry Greenwood, opened
a booth in my store and our friendship went from there. We were very close.” Sadly, Jerry
passed away several years ago. “She was my business partner and my very best friend.”
Agnes now has two stores in Milam, “4 Corners and 4 Corners 2.” These two shops are
worth the stop. They are situated next to each other, but are very different stores. As for the
unique names, Agnes credits the owner of the buildings, Dixie Sparks.
The J & A Antiques store is on the downtown square in Hemphill. The business operates
in the historic B & W Hardware building. J & A has something for everyone including
primitives, antiques, furniture, collectibles, tools and jewelry.
“We have the very best vendors,” adds Agnes. Oh! And there’s one more thing says
Agnes, “There’s always a pot of coffee.”
A Real Southern Welcome to Nuziebell’s Flea Market
Hello and welcome to Nuziebell’s Flea Market! I’m Nannette
Neel, owner of Nuziebell’s Flea Market, located near the banks of
the Toledo Bend Reservoir.
My husband and I moved to Toledo Bend on October 30, 2001
from Lafayette, Louisiana. After living here a few years, I met my
dearest friend, Jean Merrett, also known as “Jelly Jean.” I began getting
close to her while visiting her little garage sale shop. As time
went on, I started having garage sales outside her place while she
taught me the “ins-and-outs” of the business. Who better to learn
Nannette Neel, owner from than someone knowledgeable, with years under her belt.
My mother became ill so I made that my first priority. After three years of taking care of
my mother in Poche Bridge, Louisiana, she passed on, and I found myself with lots of time
and merchandise from her home and years of garage sales on my hands.
I knew of a location near the Pendleton Bridge on Toledo Bend that was looking for
vendors. The huge building housed several feet for selling and sat on five acres. I began
selling there in October of 2009, and by April 1, 2010, I was the proud owner of this location
which is now known as Nuziebell’s Flea Market.
Six years have flown by and we are still going strong, with plans for adding on in the near
future.
As for the name, Nuzie was gifted to me when I worked in Lafayette, in a one girl office.
Later on, a girlfriend of mine from the south added the “Bell” and it just stuck with me.
Nuziebell is unique and different, thus a business was born!
12th Street Antiques is a delightful peek into the past
Entering into the 12th Street Antiques store evokes a nostalgic
yearning for a time gone by. Like tuning your radio dial
through the different generations, 12th Street Antiques is a
song for those desiring to revisit life before all things “.com.”
“I always loved antiques,” says store proprietor Kathryn
McKenzie, and the store is full of that love. Kathryn explains
that she has spent a lifetime honing in on things she was surrounded
by as a young child, “I loved visiting at my grandmother’s
home, but their home burned when I was a young
Kathryn McKenzie, Owner
child. I can remember all those things in her home, and I loved her dishes, but it was all
lost. So I just started collecting and the collection grew.”
Not only does the inventory at 12th Street Antiques have historical significance, so does
the building. Built in the 1900s, the store was restored in 2012, retaining much of the building’s
original integrity. Remaining intact is the building’s original ceiling tile, lighting and
handmade brick. Vintage timber, doors, and trim, were resourced for the building’s restoration.
Also restored was the building’s original spring fed cistern located in the center of
the building. Visitors can take a peek down into the old well which has a delightful surprise
inside! The 12th Street Antiques building has received historical designation.
Kathryn has passed on her love of the past to the future generation as well. Kathryn’s
daughters, Melinda McElligott and Rhonda Mauldin, assist with the store’s operation.
Be sure to also visit Kathryn’s second location in Huntsville at 1221 Sam Houston Ave.
has a nice display of antique tools. This is a great stop in Jasper for the antique collector.
At Junktique it’s vintage shopping heaven
If you’re thinking this is just a creative name for old stuff, well, that depends on whom
is looking at it! For antique enthusiast and collectors, it’s paradise.
With over 8,000 square feet and 30 dealers under one roof, making a shopping trip to
Jasper, Texas is well worth the stop.
Juntique is located in the former Baldwin Auto Parts store that was built in the 1950s.
The location was also home to several other businesses too including the Gulf Oil Distributorship.
Evidence of the distributor’s inventory of large oil barrels stored in the upper part
of the business can be seen in the markings of round circles etched into the wooden floor.
Store owner, Theresa Belew, will be the first to tell you that what she sees - like the many
shoppers here, it is life well-lived. “I grew up in the ‘backwoods’ you know what I mean,”
explained Theresa, “We (she and her family) lived with these things. We used many of
these same things every day and at our family gatherings.”
Theresa said there are several reasons for the store’s great selection, “The store opened
July 5th, 2005 and we are the biggest antiques store in the area. Also, all the dealers here
have been working at this store from three to eleven years. We have the best dealers, they
work hard to keep their merchandise updated,” Theresa stated.
And the merchandise selection at Junktique is fantastic. From primitives to re-purposed
vintage furniture, and hundreds of collectibles and treasures in between.
Are you an early bird shopper? That’s just fine with Theresa, the store is open from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. “We care about our customers, we want them
to come back,” she said, and you can expect a hearty greeting at Junktique. Theresa adds,
“God has been good to me.”
Big Cypress Antique Emporium is a wonderful store
Bob and Rhoda Andersen moved to Marshall, Texas
in the spring of 2006.
They had recently retired from careers as real estate
brokers in Colorado for over 30 years and were searching
for the perfect home to open a bed and breakfast.
After traveleing 20,000 miles for six months, and
looking at over 200 homes in 14 states, they kept coming
back to the Piney Woods of northeast Texas.
In the fall of 2006, Creme de la Creme Bed and Breakfast
opened for business. In January 2007, they opened
Marshall Antiques in downtown Marshall, Texas.
Both businesses were doing well, but they soon realized
that having the two businesses was a little much.
So, in the fall of 2008, the big house in Marshall was
sold and the Andersens moved out by Caddo Lake and
the antique business moved to a wonderful big historic
building in Jefferson, Texas.
Bob and Rhoda had been collecting antiques throughout their marriage and have always
enjoyed the hunt. They specialize in authentic antiques including furniture, fireplace mantles,
Hoosier-type kitchen cupboards, old tools, crystal, pottery, books, linens, handmade
items and more.
A visit to Jefferson, Texas must include a visit to this great antique shop.
Make a trek across the tracks to
In East Texas there are all types of antiques and collectibles stores to shop, some stores
are in historical buildings, some stores are large, and some have a lot of items to choose
from, but there’s one store in East Texas that has it all and more! That store is Old Mill
Antiques in Jefferson, Texas.
Built in 1910, the building originally operated as a feed mill. The building is located on
land that was the early wharf site for steam boats to dock.
Michelle Rushing, owner of Old Mill Antiques, explains that the building was purchased
in 1983 by two people who came to Jefferson to put an antiques business in the old mill.
“People in town said that wouldn’t work because it was on the wrong side of the tracks,”
laughs Michelle.
Today, this 20,000 sq. ft. shopping mall is the largest antique mall in East Texas. Michelle,
who had spent numerous years doing antique shows all over
the country, came to own the business 12 years ago after she overheard
a conversation that the store was for sale. Originally planning
to just have a booth in the building, Michelle said the owner offered
to sell the business to her, so she took a leap of faith and made this
mammoth mall her own.
There are 30 different vendors at Old Mill, and shoppers can find a
wide array of items from tools, glassware, vintage clothing, vintage
jewelry, garden items, furniture, dolls and primitives. “Something
for the young, old and everything in between,” states Michelle.
Find the primitive and rare at Pine Cupboard
The name Pine Cupboard was created in 1993.
“We (my husband Leon and I) opened an antique
co-op in Kirbyville, Texas that year and named it
after a primitive and rare curly pine cupboard that
we had just bought,” explains owner Judy Miller.
“Even though the store was an old, rundown
building with no bathroom, it was a great success.
We rented a port-a-potty for 13 years, and grew
from 3 to 13 vendors in a couple of months,” she said.
Then Judy says disaster struck, “In 2005, a vicious lady named Hurricane Rita came to
visit and messed up our building. We opened a small shop at our home for four years. In
December of 2010, we had the opportunity to lease our current building, so Pine Cupboard
was reborn!”
“We opened on January 15th 2011 with a full house. We’ve had a few people to leave,
but most of our original vendors are still with us, Judy stated. “Leon and I, and the store’s
vendors are all out looking for the rare and unusual items to offer our customers. We sell
everything from antique furniture to costume jewelry, World War II memorabilia to rusty
buckets, and fig preserves to Canadian goose decoys. Also books and antique guns (when
we can find them). If we don’t have what you want we will do the best we can to find it for
you.” In addition, the store also offers a layaway plan.
Judy invites everyone to come by the Pine Cupboard and check out all the great items
they have, “We will greet you with a smile, and a y’all come on in!”
Wonderful finds at Wanda’s
If your travel plans bring you to southeast Texas, then you’re
invited to stop in and meet Wanda at Wanda’s Antiques and More
in Kirbyville.
Located on Hwy. 96 south, you can’t miss the big 40 x 80 sq. ft.
building adorned with a big yellow sign and two huge Texas stars.
Wanda Ellis, owner This place is loaded with all sorts of, well, everything nearly.
Wanda said she got started in collecting and selling when her children were small. “I
have five sons and when they were little I used to have garage sales,” she explained.
Having been in the business for 44 years, Wanda knows a thing or two about collecting.
She relates the story of an old hobby horse she had in her store, “I knew it was old, you
could tell by how it was made. Some people would try to tell me it was really not very old,
but I knew better.” One day she said a nice couple came in the store, and the gentleman
spied the old, dusty, wooden horse. The gentleman agreed with Wanda, he too, thought the
item was very old, but he just wasn’t sure how old. After quite some time wrangling on the
purchase price, the gentleman was able to take the little horse home.
Some weeks passed, and one day Wanda received a letter. It seems the new owner had
found a bit of information on the cherished item, the letter stated, “After some research, I
am confident the horse is approximately 150 years old.” Just goes to show you can’t judge
a book, or a hobby horse, by the dust on its cover, it could be that the dust is very, very old
and valuable!
At Wanda’s you’ll want to dig deep for your treasure too. The store has furniture, primitives,
glassware, Depression glass, books, vintage collections, and much more.
The Storybook Inn, a tale of friends and fellowship
The Storybook Inn is a wonderful bed and
breakfast located near downtown Lufkin.
Owner, Cindy Capps, also licensed massage
therapist, felt that bed and breakfast would work
well with her massage therapy business, and
friends and family often remarked she was a
great host when they would stay the night. Cindy
said she told friends she wanted to buy a B&B.
Not long after, a beautiful Victorian style home was found by a friend. “When I first saw
the home, it spoke to me. It (the home) was like a picture in a storybook,” she said. Cindy
said that through the assistance and encouragement of friends, “The Storybook Inn Bed &
Breakfast by Phillips & Friends” began.
At the B&B, guests can enjoy a vast array of amenities including a country breakfast,
jacuzzi baths, and the modern amenities of wireless internet and TV. Spa and massage services
are available.
The home features four bedrooms, each named for Cindy’s daughters, The Rachel, The
Tiffany, The Mary Ann, and The Melissa, all beautifully designed and unique like her dauthers.
The Storybook Inn welcomes guests that want a nice get away for a night or more, and
the B&B does offer an “Anniversary Package.” On the premises guests also have the convenient
services of the Bliss Hair Salon, and there are RV spaces on the premises as well.
Anna’s Antiques and Collectibles, for the
eclectic shopper and the traditional collector
Anna’s Antiques and Collectibles is a new shop located in
downtown Lufkin owned by Lufkin native Anna Grumbles.
While the shop may be new to its location, it is quite the
“old” shop in merchandise. The store has a remarkable selection
of items to satisfy both the eclectic shopper as well
as the traditional collector, and it is quite obvious upon a
visit to the store that Anna has a skilled eye for the unique
and rare collectibles.
Anna says her experience comes
from being a collector herself, and
in doing so, led to opening the store
in Lufkin. “We (Anna and her husband)
collected a lot for ourselves, so much so, that we decided to
sell much of what we had so that we could shop for more,” Anna says with a broad smile.
Shoppers at Anna’s Antiques and Collectibles will find antique fans, antique scales, radios,
stoneware and a tasteful collection of furniture. Collectors will also want to check out
Anna’s selection of vintage toys and Barbie dolls.
And one last thing, quite unexpected really, Anna’s has palm trees. The lovely palms
come in many different varieties and sizes.
Come into Tami’s Bistro for fresh
and tummy yummy selections
For most of us, great cooking skills are learned
from someone close to us, usually a mom, that has
taken great pride, and even greater patience, to teach
us how to navigate the basics of our culinary journey.
This journey is often a right of passage for mothers
and their daughters, and for Tami’s Bistro owner,
Tami Hebert, her mother, Judith Schwartz, was a willing
teacher - however, Tami was a vocally, reluctant student. Tami explains that initially
she rejected her mother’s push into learning good cooking skills, but time and maturity
have a way of opening a young person’s eyes - and pallet.
Today, Tami says Tami’s Bistro is a dream come true and she says “God is showing me
the way.”
At Tami’s Bistro, you’re going to need to bring an appetite. The Bistro menu has selections
from sweet to sumptuous including breakfast sandwiches, bagel sandwiches, muffins,
cookies, paninis, wraps, salads, homemade soups, drinks and freshly brewed coffee. “Everything
is made to order with fresh ingredients,” she said.
Tami’s Bistro is located at 119 S. First Street in downtown Lufkin. The Bistro is open
from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
While antique shopping in downtown Lufkin, Tami’s Bistro is an excellent place to dine
Burke Street Antiques, an unmatched antiques collection
Unmatched you say? Yes, and the reason is the seasoned
and life-long passion of the store’s owners,
Jeannie Lowery and Linda Teer.
The pair have a truly educated eye when it comes to
quality antiques and vintage, collectible merchandise.
Having the shared experience of being introduced to
antiques at an early age, these ladies make shopping at
Burke Street Antiques second nature.
The duo began as mere vendor acquaintance’s four
years ago, both choosing to locate their booths in the oldest operating antique mall in
downtown Lufkin. As luck would have it, destiny unfolded the opportunity to become
owner/operators. In fall of 2014, Burke Street Antiques was officially born.
This lovely 5000 square foot mall, voted Best of Lufkin in 2015, boosts approximately
50 booths. Staffed by these two ladies and friendly, knowledgeable vendors, there is always
someone ready to assist you with an enjoyable shopping experience. Varied merchandise
can be found among the booths of shabby chic, primitives, fine Antique American and
European furniture, sparkling crystal and imported china, vintage German linens and Edwardian
whites. Are you more inspired by Retro or vintage books, they have that too. For
those interested in DIY furniture painting, the store also carries two unique lines of chalk
style paint. With a combined 30 years of furniture refinishing and painting, these ladies can
field all your questions. If you’re tech savy, like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
was a “seize the moment” endeavor. “The location became available unexpectedly and
we knew we would have to make a decision fast,” says Linda, and they did. But the truth
is, this retail business was a 20-year dream-come-true for Linda, and Jeannie just couldn’t
resist the opportunity to use her artistic talents in an upscale retail atmosphere.
In the store, French and English furnishings abound, with a smattering of American
Lufkin Antique Mall
– the enthusiast’s essential store!
The Lufkin Antique Mall in
downtown Lufkin offers some of
the best antique and collectibles
shopping in all of East Texas.
The Mall is situated in the
former W.M. Glenn hardware
store constructed in 1924. In later
years during the depression,
it was a grocery store operated
by the Davis brothers. During
the late 1930s and early 40s, the
KTRE television broadcast company
and radio station set up programing on the second floor
of the building. The station worked well in the building due
to its thick walls which were efficient for maintaining low
noise rooms. KTRE continued to operate in the building
until the late 1960s. Also, a professional recording studio,
owned by Emory Atkinson, operated for many years in the
old KTRE studio. The street level of the building was occupied
by J.C. Penny’s, who remained in the building until late
1969 when it moved to a retail shopping center.
In the late 70s the building was purchased by Lufkin attorney
Larry G. Byrd. The earlier store fixtures were removed
from the building, and the hardwood floors were restored.
Then vendor spaces were marked and leased, and the Lufkin
Antique Mall opened its doors to the public.
The upper level of the building has been converted into
a spacious 3,000 square foot, five bedroom, two bath loft
studio apartment, with recording capabilities and three large
sound rooms. In the future, it is anticipated that additional
loft spaces will be constructed in the building.
Mr. Byrd continues as owner of the Lufkin Antique Mall
and the business has been chosen locally as the “Best Antique
Mall” several times.
The Antique Mall is managed by Mrs. Elaine
Cox. Mrs. Cox takes genuine pride in providing a
great shopping experience by keeping the store wellstocked
with items for a wide variety of antiques and
collectibles interest. Independent vendors, if interested,
may contact her for vendor space. She invites everyone
to come in and see the wonderful selection of
fine furniture, beautiful crystal and china, and more.

Is it an antique just because it’s rusty, dusty?
Well now...sounds as if the collecting bug
has got you. And perhaps you already know
what kind of collectible/s
you like, you’re
just unsure if it’s an
“antique.” Don’t worry,
there are a few basic
rules you can go by to
help you decide if the
object of your affection
really is an antique...
and just as important, if
that really matters to you.
So, what is an antique and why? The
general answer is age. Commonly, if the
age of object is 100 years old and more, it’s
considered an antique. This mostly applies
to any work of art, furniture, or decorative
object. Some items, such as automobiles for
example, are usually considered antique at
25 years of age, at least in the United States.
Antique, in short definition, is an object
belonging to earlier times. It is an object
that represents a previous era or time period
in human society.
Other items to consider
when describing an
antique would be that
it is desirable because
of its rarity, condition,
utility, beauty, or
unique features. Also
antiques have been described
as valued for a
historical significance.
In past years, there has been debate to
lower the “considered age” to 50 years rather
than the 100 years. However, the most
principled antique dealers believe that lowering
the age definition would also lower
the standard for which an object can be valued.
Now that we have discussed the basics
of what an antique is, does your object of
affection meet these qualifications? If not,
don’t leave the store just yet, or hide it away
in a closest as a misguided emotional purchase.
If the object has some of the qualities
that define it as a collectible piece, it may be
that it just has not “come of age” yet.
Consider how much it matters to you. Did
it remind you, or perhaps belong to a grandparent
or other significant person? Is it an
object that has been replaced by something
more modern? As time passes, these items
could become more valuable and desirable,
and perhaps not only to you, but even possibly
from a retail standpoint.
Right now, your item may just be a “keepsake,”
but in time, it could become a fine
antique for you or members of your family.
Every antique has a history, just like mankind,
and our families too. You could start
your own history and pass it on to the future.
Is it an antique just because it’s rusty,
dusty? Maybe. Like the antiquated saying,
“The value is in the eye of the beholder.”
Six simple things to know for the
novice collector:
Question:
1) If I
am “getting
the bug” to
start a collection
of something, like
beaded purses, vintage
or early fishing equip-
is the best way to get start-
furniture,
ment, what
ed.
Answer:
The best way to get a collection going
is to start with something you really like
or have an interest in. Perhaps a style that
would be an accessory to your home, create
a display for your “treasures” such as
mounting an old fly rod and reel on a wall in
a guy’s space, or “showcase” your beaded
Do you have an idea that would
look great in print and that
everyone would like to see?
purse collection in a lighted curio cabinet.
The saying is “If you have 3 items of the
same thing, it is a collection.”
Question:
2) I like old furniture. What are some indications
that a furniture piece is old?
Answer:
Some indications that a furniture piece is
old may be the style. Furniture from the 30s,
40s and 50s is very different from styles
today. Look for different types of wood,
and if the piece has drawers, most of them
would be of “dovetail” construction. Dovetail
construction is used to join the side and
the drawer front together.
Shop the antique malls of Lumberton
Put on your shopping shoes because in
Lumberton you will find an antique shoppers
paradise! Specifically, two great the Antique
Mall of Lumberton and the Country Lane
Antique Mall for all your treasure hunting
pleasure.
The Antique Mall of Lumberton is over
10,000 square feet with 43 dealers and 60+
booth spaces. At Country Lane Antique
Mall, shoppers can peruse over 6,000 square
feet, checking out items offered by 36 dealers.
The owner of the two malls, Judy Carter, said that the circumstances to purchase each
store came at different times, but her interest in antiques was developed throughout her life
and was an interest shared with her sister, “My sister and I both had booth spaces at the
Antique Mall of Lumberton when it was owned and operated under a different name. When
our father passed away, we had an estate sale.” Judy said that the experience she had with
the estate sale was a motivating factor in pursuing the antiques business on a larger scale.
In 2006, the mall owner announced that the business was going to be put up for sale, “I
enjoyed it so much that I wanted to do it justice,” said Judy. Since that time, the business
has flourished nicely with shoppers coming from all over the U.S.
The Country Lane Antique Mall was not previously
a mall at all. Judy explained that at
this location, another type was business had
operated there. Then in 2008 when Hurricane
Ike tore through southeast Texas, the building‘s
roof was damaged and the current owners
opted to sell the building and move elsewhere.
Judy purchased the property, remolded
it and soon it was filled with new dealers.
Judy believes that the success of the two
stores is due to two very important facts, “We have a good variety. We keep it vintage or
older. From glassware, primitives, retro, pottery, furniture, collectibles, books, jewelry,
tools, vintage clothing and accessories, and more.” The variety offered at these two stores
is so great that you just have to come to Lumberton and see it. As for the other reason
for the businesses success, and perhaps the most important reason, is that the stores have
good dealers. “We have wonderful dealers,” Judy beams. “Not only do we work together,
we fellowship together too.” Judy says that the a group of them will periodically visit and
share a meal at the store. “The dealers here work really hard at making their booth spaces
attractive and fresh day to day.”
The Antique Mall of Lumberton is located at 1181 South Main on Hwy. 96, and Country
Lane Antique Mall is located just a few short minutes away at 114 Country Lane. Both
locations are conveniently open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check them both out
at www.antiquemalloflumberton.com and www.countrylaneantiquemall.net.
Judy reminds everyone to be sure mark your calendar for the Trade Day event on the 3rd
Nacogdoches Auction owner Bonnie Worley started the business because she enjoyed
going to auctions. Bonnie enrolled in a school for auctioneers in Missouri, and following
60 hours of education she received her license. In addition, Bonnie must complete six
hours of continuing education annually to maintain her auctioneer’s license.
Nacogdoches Auction is family friend- ly and welcomes the novice as well as the
seasoned buyer. “We have a good time and lots of laughs. We have people
come from all around, Texas, Arkan-
sas, Louisiana and Oklahoma,” said
Bonnie. There is a café inside the
premises for auction participants to
enjoy a meal.
Bonnie says that the auctions are most- ly estate sales, but also for business and
tool liquidations. “We take one item or a whole house.” Bonnie said that you can
contact the business to be added to their email list and join their Facebook too.
When asked what has been her most unusual auction item, Bonnie said it
was “hair from a Sasquatch. It sold for $250.00.”
Take a peek back in time at New Waverly Antiques
A visit to New Waverly Antiques and Collectibles in New Waverly is a pleasing peek
into the past. This store is much more than an antique store, it has a past history in itself.
With over 2600 sq. ft. of shopping inside and buildings outside with garden items, doors,
windows, and rustic tools (big and small). It has some of the best offerings in antiques and
collectibles you can find in East Texas, not to mention the home town atmosphere.
Located at the corner of Hwy 75
and Gibbs Street,
just off of I-45, in
downtown New Wa-
verly, at the only
red light in town. Owner, Christine
Godwin, says “This
store was built in
1929 when the orig- inal Polish Community
moved ten
miles west from
what is now known
as “Old Waverly,”
to New Waverly, to be where the Great Northern Railroad laid its tracks. The store still
houses the original cabinets and display counters. When you walk in, it is almost like stepping
back in time.”
Christine and her husband, Craig, purchased the store in 2007. She saw a way to preserve
her Polish heritage being fourth generation Bochina (Buckner)/Hyman, and be a part
of the community known as the “Cradle for Polish Immigration.”
At the store you will find antiques of all kinds, glassware, kitchen items, furniture, collectibles,
baseball and basketball cards, license plates, handmade items and much more.
The store offers lay-a-ways and buys old things to sell.
Having lived in the southeast Texas
Keeping it authentic is the pride of Silsbee Antique Mall
Like many of store owners in the antiques and
collectibles business, variety is important. This is
also true at the Silsbee Antique Mall. Store owner,
Rose Goggans explains, “We have mostly antiques,
no clothing or crafts.” Therefore, for the
right collector, this shop will be a good stop.
“I started getting into this business when my
daughters were young because I wanted to be
able to pick them up from school,” said Rose.
She explained that she spent many years refurbishing and restoring antique furniture and in
doing so, she was always attracted to vintage items. This ultimately led to putting a business
together for antique collectors and shoppers.
At Silsbee Antique Mall, visitors will find collections of vintage furniture – including
finds from the 30s and 40s, glassware, and an ample selection of beautiful lamps. “Anything
you can think of,” said Rose. This 4,000 square foot store is packed with great merchandise.
Other sought after collections that can be found at Silsbee Antique Mall include
old tools, farm implements, and cast iron items. Also, Rose said shoppers should stop and
the gorgeous handmade benches in the store. The benches are crafted from vintage timber
and would make a beautiful addition to any home.
