Welcome Chamber President
Welcome to our special
corner of Deep East Texas.
However you found this
beautiful place, by accident
or on purpose, we are exceedingly
pleased you are
here and will try our best to
let you know it. First let me
tell you a little bit about who
we are. Sabine County is one
of the original 23 counties in
Texas and may be one of the
only ones with our original
boundries. One of which was
the Sabine River to our East.
That’s the river that became
the great Toledo Bend Reservoir, voted the #1 fishing lake
in the U.S.
The Sabine River was historically signifigant as the major
crossing from Louisiana on El Camino Real. This area
is described by Stephen F. Austin, the father of Texas, as
he saw it for the first time. After crossing the Sabine he
camped on Boregas Creek, just West of Milam. The diary
is available online if you are interested. The county
has no less than 100 Historical markers including , The
Gaines-Oliphint House just West of the Pendleton Bridge
and further West is McMahan Chapel, founded in 1837,
the oldest Protestant Church in the State.
Hemphill is the county seat of Sabine County and the
Historic Courthouse and Square are located at the conjunction
of Hwys 83, 87, and 184. The square is also home
This chamber magazine published by
Sabine
County
to The Jailhouse Museum and Virgie Speights Memorial
library. Inside the 1903 brick structure is a rare inside
hanging facility and is not to be missed.
Pineland is the other incorporated town in Sabine County
and is important as it’s name implies as a center for the
creation of forest products and has a long lumber history
of it’s own.
On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia came
to Earth mostly in Sabine County, so NASA helped us develope
a wonderful museum to tell the story of the Shuttles
history and of those that lost their lives in the indeavor.
So if it’s only a few hours, days or longer, we are delighted
to have you here and look forward to having the
opportunity to share our favorite place with you.
Toledo Bend Lake
The legendary quote “everything is bigger in Texas” has often been
stated for a number of reasons; big hats, big hair, and big homes, just
to name a few. But now this “state credential” has become much more
fascinating. Why? Because the subject is largely at home in Sabine
County.
The Toledo Bend Lake, a 185,000 surface acre impoundment, made
lake history in early 2015 by becoming the #1 top bass fishery in the
United States, according to Bassmaster’s magazine. But just because
this is the first time Toledo Bend Lake has garnered the top spot, according
to Bassmaster’s, it has never ranked below #15. Previous rankings
by the magazine were #15 in 2014, #10 in 2013, and #15 in 2012.
However big and abundant bass are not the only reason that Toledo
Bend Lake is remarkable. The size of the lake is exceptional as well. It
is the largest man-made body of water in (or partly in) Texas, it’s the
largest in the South, and fifth largest in surface acres in the U.S.
Toledo Bend Lake is a reservoir on the Sabine River nestled between
the state line of Texas and Louisiana. Its shoreline is approximately
1,250 miles. The reservoir is 65 miles in length, ten miles in
maximum width, and maximum 110 feet at maximum depth. Water
volume is 4,447,000 acre feet. The lake borders land in Sabine, Shelby,
Panola and Newton Counties in Texas, and Sabine and DeSoto Parishes
in Louisiana.
In 1963, land acquisitions began for the reservoir as a joint project
between the Texas and Louisiana River Authorities. The Toledo
Bend Dam spillway and power plant project launched in 1964 for the
primary purpose of water supply, hydroelectric power generation, and
recreation. The closure of the earthen embankment and impoundment
of water began in 1966 and the power plant opened operation in early
1969.
The Reservoir is the only public water conservation and hydroelectric
power plant that has been established without federal participation
in its permanent financing.
While the lake garners many accolades for its bass fishing, there are
ample other fishing species for an angler’s enjoyment such as crappie,
bream, white bass, stripers and catfish.
The Toledo Bend Lake area is also a great place for additional outdoor
activities including both public and private facilities for camping,
boating, swimming, picnicking, hiking and sightseeing.
Sam Rayburn Lake
Sam Rayburn Lake is a reservoir that borders Sabine County and is
fed by the Angelina River, the major tributary of the Neches River.
Although originally known as McGee Bend Dam and Reservoir, the
88th Congress in September 1963 adopted a special resolution changing
the reservoir’s name to Sam Rayburn Dam and Reservoir. The resolution
was made in honor of then recently deceased House Speaker
Sam Rayburn, a long-time proponent of soil and water conservation.
Dedication ceremonies were held May 8, 1965. Today the reservoir is
operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
Construction of the reservoir began September 7, 1956 and opened
operations on March 29, 1965. The purposes of the reservoir were
to provide flood control, hydroelectric power generation and water
conservation. Construction costs, including recreation facilities, were
approximately $66 million.
Sam Rayburn is approximately 79 miles long and is the largest reservoir
situated completely in Texas. The lake stretches over 600 miles
of shoreline, and its surface area is 114,500 acres. Water volume of the
lake is 3,997,600 acre feet and surface elevation is 164 feet.
“Big Sam,” as it is affectionately known by local residents and frequent
visitors, is a popular recreational lake that gets considerable attention
due to its close proximity to larger metropolitan areas such as
Beaumont and Houston, Texas.
In addition to sharing Sabine County with Toledo Bend Lake, Big
Sam also shares in some very notable fishing achievements. A survey
of the top 100 best bass fishing lakes in the United States by Bassmaster’s
magazine, this big lunker lake earned a top spot, securing fifth
place in the survey. In previous survey years the lake garnered second
place in 2013, 26th in 2014, and 19th in 2012.
This “fish on” lake is home to over 300 fishing tournaments per
year. Numerous tournament trail anglers “cut their teeth” on Rayburn.
Yet bass are not the only fish species that are abundant in the reservoir.
Other species that are excellent year-round include crappie, catfish,
hybrid striped bass, bluegill and redear bream.
The beautiful impoundment is also a popular destination for boating,
waterskiing, and swimming. Other enjoyable outdoor activities
on and near the lake, include birdwatching, nature hiking and driving
the scenic roads around the lake.
Parks/Recreation
Sabine National Forest
Located in the piney woods of east Texas, the 160,656-acre Sabine National Forest
is the easternmost of the four national forests in Texas and forms part of the
boundary between Texas and Louisiana. The forest is situated on the western slopes
of the Sabine River watershed within Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, Jasper, and
Newton counties. Of that total acreage, the largest majority, 95,410 acres, is situated
in Sabine County.
The eastern part of the Sabine National Forest outlines the Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Recreation developments adjacent to Toledo Bend Reservoir are extensive.
Private facilities range from fish camps, with marinas and primitive camping, to
highly developed lodge and motel type facilities. Outdoor recreation opportunities
in the Sabine National Forest include fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, horseback
riding, and mountain biking. There are approximately 51 private facilities on the
Texas side of Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Trail Between the Lakes
The Trail Between the Lakes is a 28-mile hiking trail extends from Lakeview
Recreation Area on Toledo Bend Reservoir to Highway 96 near the easternmost
part Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The trail is located entirely on U.S. Forest Service
property. The trails woodland trails are open to bicycles and horseback riders.
Most of the Trail Between the Lakes lies on gently rolling terrain that crosses small
streams, most of which have no bridges. Hiking is at its best in the early spring and
fall when the forest is filled with blossoms and colorful leaves.
Indian Mounds Wilderness Area
Located within the Sabine National Forest is the Indian Mounds Wilderness
Area. The Texas Wilderness Act of 1984 designated 34,000 acres of National Forest
Land as wilderness. Indian Mounds Wilderness totals 12,369 acres of the original
designated acres. In this area, the southern pine beetle has been allowed to follow
its natural course with certain limitations and thus, approximately 8,500 acres have
been impacted over the last five years. The wilderness area has been managed to
remain in a natural. Visitors to the area should be aware of the possibility of falling
trees due to standing dead timber from the pine beetle infestations.
Red Hills Lake
Red Hills Lake is a short distance from the Toledo Bend Reservoir. This 19-
acre recreational lake was completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in
1940. The picturesque area offers camping, fishing, and swimming. Red Hills Lake
is open in the spring.
Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum
“Everything shook,” “the house was vibrating,” “two loud booms,”
“things falling from the sky.” These were just a few of the expressions
echoed throughout East Texas on that fateful day of February 1, 2003.
The NASA Space Shuttle Columbia was in its final moments of completing
the mission in space when it violently exploded upon reentering
the earth’s atmosphere. At approximately 8:59 a.m. EST, over the skies
of East Texas and the dense woods of Sabine County, Space Shuttle Columbia
disintegrated on its landing descent to Kennedy Space Center. The
Columbia crew were returning home having completed a microgravity
research mission, STS 107.
On board for the mission were astronauts Rick Husband, Mission Commander;
William “Willie” McCool, Pilot; David Brown, Mission Specialist;
Kalpana “KC” Chawla, Mission Specialist; Laurel Clark, Mission
Specialist; Michael Anderson, Payload Specialist; and Ilan Ramon, Payload
Specialist.
The cause of the accident was later discovered to
have been the result of a small piece of foam insulation
which came off the main fuel tank seconds into the
shuttle’s launch. NASA officials disregarded the incident
because debris falls off at every launch, but they
were unaware of the extent of the damage.
On the return voyage, the shuttle must puncture back through the atmosphere
at a speed of 17,200 mph. Such high speed against the thick layers
Becca Tatum
Museum Curator
Remembering Columbia
of the atmosphere creates friction, and that friction causes heating to over
3,000 degrees. The result of this intense heat created a hole in the craft’s
fuselage then causing the shuttle to burst into tiny pieces.
As federal agents began the complex process of mobilization in East Texas following the
incident, the citizens of Hemphill and Sabine County took immediate action. Volunteers from
all over the county poured into Hemphill to walk the woods in search of Columbia’s remains
including the bodies of the crew. All seven crew members were recovered in Sabine County.
The recovery effort remains the largest in the history of the United States. Over 25,000
people helped in the effort. Volunteers provided at no charge three meals a day for 16 days to
about 10,000 responders.
And then there were nine. Two more heroes became casualties in the days to follow the Columbia
disaster. A helicopter search crew encountered engine problems and crashed in Sabine
County. Of the five people that were on board the helicopter, pilot Jules “Buzz” Mier, Jr. and
Texas Forest Service employee Charles Krenek, were killed in the crash.
The Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum opened to the public February 1, 2011. The museum
was made possible by the generous donations of many, especially that of Mr. Albert “Al” Smith, who
donated the money for the construction of the building. The purpose of the museum is to pay tribute
to Columbia’s 28 missions, especially that of STS 107, and to the searchers who lost their lives in the
recovery efforts.
A designated area with extensively detailed displays honoring the astronauts, as well as Mier and
Krenek, are filled with items donated by the hero’s families. Joshua 1:6-9.
The NASA museum also features a digital learning center, a theatre, and simulators to capture the
Historical Look
The Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto is generally accepted
by historians as having brought an expedition to Texas
around the time of 1541, and then French explorer Lois
Juchereau de St. Denis, was recognized as having explored
the area of East Texas about the time of 1704.
Early documentation for the person or persons, as well as
the reason for having named the area Sabine is not available.
Historians have made attempts to locate information
on the documentation, however it is believed that the information
is lost. But collectively, historians believe that the
Sabine River is the source for naming the area. The name
Sabine is Sabina in Spanish which means “cypress.”
Sabine County is one of the original counties of Texas
established by the Constitution of the Republic of Texas in
1836.
Beginning in 1835, the provisional government of Texas
passed an ordinance and decree that created the Municipality
of Sabine.
This ordinance, which is detailed in its description of the
early area, dictates the original boundary lines of Sabine
Municipality. A partial description of the boundary reads:
... “thence in a southwestern direction to the Big Prairie on
the Ayish Bayou; thence down the said Ayish Bayou to the
mouth of Bear Creek; thence in a south easterly direction to
the head of Little Cow Bayou; thence down said Cow Bayou
to its junction with Sabine River; thence up said river to the
beginning; and known by the same name of THE SABINE
DISTRICT, shall be and is hereby created and made a separate
Municipality; by the name of SABINE, with all the
privileges and immunities of other Municipalities of Texas.”
Then in 1836, Section 6 of the Constitution of the Republic
of Texas provided that certain “Precincts” would have
representation in the Congress of the Republic. Sabine was
one of these 23 precincts, later to become known as the
“original 23 counties” in Texas.
The Sabine County seat was originally located at Milam,
then following a survey and two elections in 1858, the
county seat was moved Hemphill. The town of Hemphill
was named after the former Supreme Court Justice John
Hemphill. In 1875 a fire destroyed the courthouse and in
1906 a new courthouse was constructed. In 1909 fire destroyed
the top floor of the building and additional remodeling
was completed in 1938. Since that time, the courthouse
has had additional structural updates.
The Sabine County Courthouse was designated as a Texas
Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission in
1981.
Sabine
County
History of the Sabine County Jail Museum
The first all brick Sabine County Jail was completed in
1904. The brick were handmade from the kiln of Henry W.
Huffman. This was the county’s jail from 1904 until 1983
when a new facility, the Blan Greer Criminal Justice Center
opened.
In 1986, the Sabine County Historical Commission received
authority to restore the old jail and operate it as a
county historical museum. The Jail Museum opened on
November 11, 1987.
The jail houses an indoor hanging facility, one of just
a few still existing in the nation. There is only one confirmed
hanging that took place in this original jail and a
piece of the rope used in that hanging is on display in the
Speights-Boswell-Vanderbilt Room of the museum. Entering
the “Bull Run,” visitors can view the original trapdoor,
once located below the jail’s hanging noose.
In 1924 Texas dissolved the death penalty by hanging
and modifications were made to the trapdoor installing rebar
and sealing the opening with cement.
Since the opening of the Jail Museum, descendants of
Sabine county families and friends have donated family
treasures and artifacts to the museum for visitors to view.
Gaines-Oliphint House
The Gaines-Oliphint House is one of
the earliest Pre-Republic, Anglo Amercian
structures in Texas. This house is
the only surviving structure of the early
settlement of Pendelton. It was located
on James Gaines’s large plantation and
ferry-tavern enterprise on the Sabine
River crossing of the El Camino Real.
This road, first blazed through Texas by
the Spanish in 1691, was used by many
Anglo-American colonists entering the
frontier from Louisiana.
The two story, double-pen, hand hewed
log structure was built in the early 1800s
by James D. Taylor Gaines. It was identical
to the Gaines Ferrying House he built
for himself at the Sabine River crossing.
This house was apparently built for his
third wife’s parents, the Edmond Norris’,
so that they might live in the vicinity
when visiting. Later his cousin,
Susan Jackson, lived with her family
in the house. The Gaines Ferry site was
inundated by the waters of the Toledo
Bend Reservoir in the late 1960s. The
Gaines-Oliphint House, an exceptionally
fine example of early Texas architecture,
is all that remains of this early Nineteenth
century settlement.
Location: From the Sabine County, Texas
Courthouse in Hemphill, go one block
east on Farm Road 83 (Worth Street),
then turn left on north on State Hwy. 87
for 7.0 miles to Milam, then right or east
Harbor) for 0.1 mile to stop sign, then
right or east on Harbor Blvd. for 0.1 mile,
then left or northwest on Ensign Drive
for 0.2 mile. The Gaines-Oliphint House
will be on the right.
McMahan’s Chapel
The oldest Methodist church having a
continuous existence in Texas. Organized
as a “Religious Society”, September,
1833, at the home of Colonel Samuel
McMahan by the Rev. James P. Stevenson
(1808-1885), as a Methodist church
July, 1834, by the Rev. Henry Stephenson.
First building was completed in
1839 by the Rev. Littleton Fowler and
Historical Spots
given the name of McMahan’s Chapel.
Displaced by a new building in 1872 and
again in 1900.
Location: 5.5 miles west from Geneva on
State Highway 21, 2 miles southwest to
chapel.
Las Borregas Camp Site
Las Borregas Creek formed east line
of Spain’s 1794 grant to J. I. Pifermo,
first landowner in present Sabine County.
Upstream, about 1800 at Jack Cedar
Crossing of Crow Ferry Road, Spain
had an army Post to protect settlers and
travelers. The “Father of Texas”, Stephen
F. Austin, spent his first night (July 16,
1821) in Texas on this creek.
Location: State Highway 21 and State
Highway 87 intersection, west side of
Milam.
Gaines Memorial Bridge
Named by the Highway Departments
of Louisiana and Texas in honor of two
brothers: James Gaines, who owned and
operated a ferry here, 1819 to 1844, and
was a signer of the Texas Declaration
of Independence, and General Pendleton
Gaines, an officer of the U.S. Army,
prominent in Louisiana history, and who
was stationed near here in 1836 to observe
the campaign in Texas.
Location: Seven miles east of Milam on
State Highway 21.
El Lobanillo
Pueblo of Gil Ybarbo (1729-1809),
where his ill mother and other refugees
remained when Spain evacuated colonists
from western Louisiana and East
Texas in 1773. Granted to Juan Ignacio
Pifermo, and inherited in early 1800s by
John Maximillian (1778?-1866), this is
now Known as the oldest continuously
occupied site in East Texas.
Location: State Highway 21, near post
office, Geneva.
The Causey House
The Causey House was thought to have
been built in the 1830s by Benjamin F.
Bryant, who was from Georgia. This
home was originally constructed on land
between Palo Gaucho and Nichols Creek
Sabine
County
The Causey House
about five miles south of Milam. Owners
of the home were Bryant, Henry Nichols,
A.C. Gomer, George Causey and Vic and
Celeste Waller. The Waller’s then donated
the home to Milam Settler’s Day
Organization. The organization moved
the Causey home to the old Milam town
square where it has remained since the
mid-1990s.
The El Camino Real De Los Tejas
The El Camino Real De Los Tejas is a
National Historic Trail designated by the
National Park Service.
The trail spans from present day Mexico
City to Nacogdoches, and then into Louisiana
border at the Sabine River, and then
ends at Natchitoches, Louisiana. The
Trail is 2,500 miles in length and was
marked by Spanish explorers and missionaries
in the 1700s, and was used as a
trading route for Native Americans. The
route follows Hwy. 21 in Sabine County
through the town of Milam. Near the
town of Milam is the Borregas Creek. It
is noted in the journal of Stephen F. Austin
that he spent his first night in what
was to become Texas on the banks of
Borregas Creek.
Gaines Ferry
Gaines Ferry crossed the Sabine River at
what is now Hwy. 21 and the Pendleton
Bridge. The ferry was originally in use
about 1795 and known as the Chabanan
Ferry. In 1819, the ferry was purchased
by James Taylor Gaines and became
known as the Gaines Ferry. Following
the sale of the ferry by Gaines in 1843,
the ferry became known as the Pendleton’s
Ferry. The ferry was operational
until 1937 when it was replaced by the
Pendleton Bridge.
Sabine
County
SABINE COUNTY - A DIVERSE PLACE
WITH PLENTY OF PROMISE
Nestled between two national forests and two large reservoirs lies an unpolished jewel known
as Sabine County, Texas. Our county has many natural resources and much beauty with tall pine
trees, rolling hills, and bright, clean waterways.
Forestry has been a way of life for our citizens, both in logging and processing of pine and hardwood
trees. The county includes 95,410 acres of national forest comprising thirty-nine percent
of its landmass. Many other thousands of acres are owned by timber companies or private tree
farmers. Georgia Pacific, formerly known as Temple Industries, is one of our largest employers.
Our fine county schools have benefited from the revenue of timber sales, and oil and gas leases,
to create modern state-of-the-art campuses.
In 1964, life stared to change in Sabine County when construction began on the largest manmade
body of water in Texas. That project transformed the Sabine River into Toledo Bend Lake
and, once completed, left Sabine County with a large portion of the 1,264 miles of lakeshore
frontage. In 2015, Toledo Bend Lake was named by Bassmasters Magazine as the number one
ranked bass fishing lake in the nation. From this publicity, we are expecting large numbers of
fishermen from across the country who will be bringing their business to Sabine County in search
of that elusive sought after ten-pound lunker.
An active group, the “Great East Texas Outdoor Association,” has been formed to promote Sabine
County’s interaction with Toledo Bend Lake. Their goals include establishing a permanent
tournament venue capable of handling large professional events and promoting outdoor recreation
throughout the county.
To the west, the Sam Rayburn Reservoir also touches our county. This water resource has been
very attractive to people seeking a second home or retirement property. Tourism has been generated
and continues to grow as an industry.
Sabine County’s future growth expectations come from more than just the lakes, but also improvements
in highway access along trucking routes such as Texas Highway 96, and in increased
rail usage. As the Texas gulf coast benefits from the Panama Canal enlargement, we should see
more commercial traffic and rail freight moving north and south though our county, mainly
through Pineland and Bronson areas.
Our county seat of Hemphill is poised for growth also. We hope we can take advantage of that
increased traffic to entice industry and manufacturing with attached job opportunities. The county
of Sabine recently installed a 196-foot Public Safety Communications Tower in Hemphill. The
tower serves communication for law enforcement, emergency medical services, and volunteer
fire departments. This new tower is self-supporting meaning it requires no guywires and it replaces
the 35-year old guywire tower. The new antennas and coax cables achieve more coverage
for radio communication. In addition, it allows for future growth for volunteer fire departments
radio networks. The communications tower was made financially achievable in part via a grant a
$100,000 from the Keeler Foundation, a part of the Temple Foundation.
Our citizens are always our main asset and our communities are friendly and welcoming to
all visitors. Even though our county is small with a full time population of 10,400, on any given
weekend that number swells to 20,000 plus from visitors and second home owners. Our county
seeks entrepreneurs with vision and desire. Sabine County will provide the scenery and surroundings
and support for those efforts. Our future is bright.
Welcome From The Mayor
City of Hemphill, Texas-
A Home for a Day or a Lifetime
Whether you are looking for a place to stay off the beaten path for a
vacation or for a lifetime, you will find Hemphill, Texas one of the most
welcoming and relaxing communities in the state. As mayor of the City
of Hemphill, I would like to invite you to visit our city tucked away in the
scenic Pineywoods of East Texas. Hemphill, founded in 1858, is the seat of
Sabine County, a vast timber area. The City of Hemphill was incorporated
in December of 1939.
Today, Hemphill is a commercial center for lumber and a major gateway
to the immense Toledo Bend Reservoir; therefore, it is a mecca for fishing,
hunting, and water related activities. The Bassmaster Elite Series designated
Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Louisiana-Texas border as a renowned
fishery, and B.A.S.S. announced that the lake has earned the top spot on
Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes list. A gallows, more than 80 years old,
is still in place in the four-cell county jail museum, and our city is home to
the Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum.
The City of Hemphill has a population of 1198 and is a General Law
Type A municipality, which elects a mayor and five alderman at-large; in
addition, the City operates under the City Manager form of government in
Robert Hamilton
Mayor
City of
Hemphill
which the council passes legislation and policy and the City Manager implements the laws and policy; furthermore,
the City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the City. At the City of Hemphill, we are working to
enhance the quality of life, to improve city services, and to provide transparent and accountable governance. Hemphill
is located close to the border between Texas and Louisiana; therefore, we are close to the larger cities of Nacogdoches,
Lufkin, Center, Beaumont, and Shreveport, Louisiana. Hemphill is surrounded by the Sabine National Forest and Toledo
Bend Reservoir.
The City of Hemphill owns its municipal utilities which are electric, water, natural gas, and sewer, and, as such, the
city obtains revenue from these utilities as well as from general sales and use tax; therefore, the City does not currently
assess a property tax. The City provides assistance to the JR Huffman Public Library, East Sabine Senior Services,
Hemphill Housing Authority, the Hemphill Dixie League and the Hemphill Volunteer Fire Department, and the City
provides four full-time police officers for police protection within the city limits.
The City also provides garbage, animal control, parks, and solid waste disposal
services. The City also prides itself in working with our state and other local governments
as well as community organizations to make a better community for
everyone. The City also has affordable housing and is also home to Hemphill
I.S.D and Sabine County Hospital. The City has two health, rehabilitation,
and nursing home facilities within minutes of the city center.
At the City of Hemphill and in Sabine County, we take pride in the fact
that our citizens are both friendly, helpful, and altruistic; for example,
during the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, our citizens banded together
to provide help and assistance to recovery workers and to help
in the recovery. The City of Hemphill is definitely a unique community,
but we also feel that our community is one of the most friendly, peaceful,
and welcoming places in the state and nation that you can choose to visit or
to live.
Bring your family and friends for a day or for a lifetime.
JR Huffman Public Library is a great place to visit and learn
The library’s moto, “Building A Community of Readers,” is easy to see
once inside the building. The library is filled with books and other resource
materials for a wide variety of needs.
The library opened its doors in Hemphill in 1994. It began as a grassroots
effort by local residents and the generosity of Al and Pat Smith and
the Temple Foundation. The Dr. W.T. Arnold, Sr. Theater is a wonderful
addition to the library facility. It is dedicated to and named after long-time
resident, Dr. William Thomas Arnold, Sr., who was the town physician for
many years. Dr. Arnold died in 1937, and a generous donation from his
children supplemented the funding for the theater.
Library director is Vicky Ostrom and Assistant Library Director is Kathy
Figat. Vicky is an avid puppeteer and gives lively puppet performances
during the summer reading months at the library. These elaborately created
puppets are all handmade by Vicky.
The library’s vibrant atmosphere encourages learning for young readers
and is inviting for all ages. It is located at 375 Sabine Street, and is
open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call
409.787.4829 or visit www.hemphilltxlibrary.com.
JR Huffman Public Library Director Vicky Ostrom
poses with some soft, but very fun friends! Vicky
makes the puppets by hand and gives numerous
puppet shows at the library during the children’s
summer reading program.
West Sabine ISD
Tiger Country!
A great place for your family!
City of
Pineland
West Sabine ISD is located in the western 1/3 of Sabine County, includes five communities; Rosevine, Bronson,
Plainview, Centerview, and Pineland. Our communities consist of homes at the end of a country lane to subdivision
homes. WSISD affords country life at its finest although we are still only a short 60 minute drive from Lufkin and
Nacogdoches or a 25 minute drive to Jasper. Families enjoy the slow pace of a country lifestyle deep in the heart of
the “Pineywoods” where the cost of living is low! Property for building your dream house is available and affordable.
For outdoor entertainment we have habitat in abundance for birdwatchers, and if you like boating or fishing,
we are only minutes from Lake Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend Lake, Rio Sabine, and Bayou Ayish, where you
can swim, ski, or just enjoy! In addition, Sabine County has some of the best hunting in all of Texas! The Sabine
National Forest, 26,000 acres in Sabine County, Tx. and extending into Jasper, Newton, Shelby and San Augustine
Counties boasts some of the best outdoor recreational areas around. Sabine National Forest has 95,410 acres for the
enjoyment of area residents as well as visitors. Primitive camping is permitted on the National Forest land unless
posted otherwise. There are recreational areas and wilderness areas located in the Sabine National Forest. These
areas are easily accessible and they are for the public to enjoy. For the people who love to get out in nature there is
the Trail Between The Lakes located in the southern portion of Sabine County. The trail is a 28-mile hiking trail that
winds through the Sabine National Forest. The Trail Between The Lakes extends from Lakeview Recreation Area
on Toledo Bend Reservoir to US 96 within sight of the easternmost point of Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Hikers can
see different plant communities; interesting topography, wildlife, beautiful scenery, and various forest management
activities. The trail crosses roads at a number of locations, so it’s easy to plan shorter hikes of varying lengths.
WSISD Curriculum
Milam
Texas
Milam
Chamber Milam of “Red Commerce Mound” Members Texas
Graceful woodland slopes
in northern Sabine County draw you into
the small town of Milam, Texas. But
don’t let this little charming destination
belie its vast and important footprint in
Sabine County or in the State of Texas for
that matter.
Located on Highway 21, known to be
the oldest roadway on the North American
continent, Milam is the oldest town
in Sabine County.
The first travelers on this historical
United States Post Office – Milam, Texas
route were Indians; Milam served as a
trading location before white men came to Texas. Friendly Indian tribes from Natchez, Mississippi to Alto, Texas visited
with each other in Milam when traveling the roadway in various seasons for hunting purposes.
In the early 1700s when Spain was trying to lay claim to Texas, the King of Spain had a road built for his soldiers to
travel over. The area was used as a campsite by the Spanish on the Old San Antonio Road and was known as Las Borregas.
Stephen F. Austin spent his first night in Texas on the Borregas Creek and described the area as a red dirt mound, giving
the town its original name. Thus, when John S. Roberts came from Louisiana and established a trading post in 1834,
he named the area “Red Mound.”
Milam, served as the county seat for Sabine County and was quite active in the Texas Revolution. In response to the
call for soldiers for Sam Houston’s army, Benjamin Bryant of Milam raised a company known as Sabine Company,
which joined the army at Groce’s Plantation.
In 1835, the town’s name of Red Mound was changed to Milam in honor of Benjamin Rush Milam, a leading figure in
the Texas Revolution. At that time the population of Milam was 3,600. The Milam Post Office is the oldest post office in
Texas, having been established May 22, 1846, and has been in use ever since. While under the Republic of Texas, Milam
was a port of entry with a custom’s collector. During the Civil War it became county headquarters for the Army of the
Confederacy. Also, at one time, there were two large race tracks, inns and taverns in Milam. The new town of Milam
served as the county seat of Sabine County from 1836 to 1858.
Today, the population is about 1,480, according to the 2010 census. The area celebrates Milam Settlers Day annually
to preserve the history of Milam. The two day
event is held the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.
Milam Settlers Day is free to attend and has
craft and food booths, and entertainment. Funds
raised from the event are used for the upkeep
of the Causey House, El Camino Park, and the
Milam Cemetery. Also, funds are also used for a
scholarship to a local graduate.
Recently, a historical marker designating the
area where Austin spent his first night in Texas
on Las Borregas Creek was placed, and future
plans for historical markers in Milam include
the Milam Cemetery and for the town of Milam.
