MSRA’s 19th Annual
Kids Pedal Tractor Pull
The Kids Pedal Tractor Pull promises to be a big event this
year, held rain or shine at Back to the 50’s weekend on Saturday.
It will be held in the infield of the old racetrack, in front
of the Grandstand.
The Pull is free and open to all youngsters ages 4 to 11
years. Because this event is sanctioned by the National Kids
Pedal Tractor Pulling Association, the winners of each age
group are eligible to participate at the State meet in September.
A parent or guardian must register each youngster; there
will be no preregistration prior to the Back to the 50s weekend.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., the first pulls are at
11:00 a.m. Registration is open to all, but once all the pulls are
made for that particular age group, that group is finished. So
register early to avoid missing out.
MSRA Scholarship Foundation
Marge Olson
Scholarship Foundation President
The purpose of the Scholarship Foundation is to promote the secondary education
of MSRA members and their children. The MSRA Scholarship Foundation was
founded in 1992. It is a non-profit corporation. All donation are tax deductible. The
scholarships are funded by the MSRA and fundraising events held throughout the year. The primary fundraising
event is the Silent Auction and Sale, held annually during the Back to the 50’s weekend.
The scholarship program is available to current members of MSRA and children of current members. The
MSRA membership must be current before 8/1/2015. There is no age limit for scholarship applicants, however,
those individuals age 21 or older at the time of the application deadline (August 1, 2016) must have
their own MSRA membership. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
The Silent Auction and Sale at Back to the 50’s will be held Friday and Saturday at the Scholarship
tent located on Randall Avenue, west of Underwood, next to the MSRA Merchandise tent. Bidding will
begin at 9 AM and close at 4 PM each day. Volunteers will be at the tent to answer any questions. All
winning bidders must pick up their items by 5 PM the day of the auction. Only checks or cash will be accepted.
In addition to the auction and sale, we will have limited edition art prints for sale by Eric Aurand, both at
the registration hotel Wednesday through Friday and at the Scholarship tent on Friday and Saturday. There
will also be copies of the limited edition, Car and Club Magazine, created by Eric Aurand, for sale at the
registration hotel and at the Scholarship tent on Friday and Saturday. All proceeds from the sale of his work
is donated to the Scholarship Foundation.
If you are interested in donating an item to the Silent Auction and Sale or making a cash donation to our
cause, please stop by the Scholarship tent on Friday or Saturday. All donations are tax deductible and you
will received a donation receipt.
Remember to check out the variety of items available for auction and sale at the Scholarship Tent and help
us make this our most successful year.
We will be at the corner of Dan Patch & Underwood Friday
MSRA Legislative Committee Information Booth
The MSRA Legislative Committee will be located in the tent near the
SW corner of Underwood and Randall, by the Morton Building. This is
your chance to share your car-related concerns with the Committee.
• Discuss licensing and titling policy with a Minnesota Department of
Public Safety representative.
• If you’ve got any questions or issues regarding legislation that you
think are important to MSRA membership, stop by and let’s talk about
them.
• Legislative Committee members will be at the tent all day. Come and
meet them -- hear about what the “hot” legislative items are for this year.
If you’ve got any interest in hearing how the Legislative Committee works,
stop by. We can always use your help -- maybe you’d like to join us?
The MSRA Legislative Committee
was formed in February of 1988 to
The Committee’s mission is to
foster the advancement of legislation in
legislation that has potential impact on
our hobby (e.g. non-oxygenated fuel issue);
• Proposes legislation/provides support
to legislation that is favorable to our
hobby (e.g. exemption from emissions
testing, non-oxygenated premium fuel
exemption, single license plate);
• Acts as a collection point and information
resource for MSRA on legislative
issues (e.g. LineChaser, articles, reprinted
information, etc.);
• Acts as MSRA’s liaison with other
organizations to monitor, organize, coordinate
and focus efforts on specific
lawmaking issues (e.g. SEMA, MSMA,
MCCC, etc.);
• Tracks national legislative trends
(e.g. through SEMA membership, magazine
and newspaper articles, etc.);
• Organizes events to promote legislative
goodwill (e.g. legislative tent at
Back to the 50’s, Run to the Hill at the
State Capitol, etc.); and,
• Holds regularly scheduled meetings
that are open to the membership.
The street rod plates were a successful
MSRA project that demonstrated how
Jerry Johnson’s (one of the founders of
MSRA) vision of an association of car
clubs” could get things done. Later on,
setting up the Legislative Committee
seemed like a reasonable next step. Sandy
Felde was the first Chair, and there
are quite a few of the original committee
members still active. It’s pretty quiet on
the legislative front today. The last major
issue was the fight for “non-oxygenated
premium”.
Ask one of the committee members
about some of those sessions at the
Capitol. And the green sheet listing of
stations that carry the premium without
ethanol keeps expanding. Blue dots,
single license plates, and an exemption
from a proposed “California emissions”
Saturday 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
bill a few years ago, are other examples
of issues the committee has worked on.
We have to pay attention to what’s going
on. Bill Strusinski, an MSRA member
and professional lobbyist, has worked
with the committee since its formation.
His expertise and connections have been
invaluable.
One event that the committee coordinates
is the annual “Run to the Hill”.
MSRA is known at the Capitol because of
this event. The ‘Run’ this year is the 26th
of the series. Every legislator is contacted
on behalf of MSRA and receives information
about our association. We thank
the legislators for past favorable legislation,
and remind them that our members
are voters. There are a dedicated group
of MSRA members that supplement the
Legislative Committee on this day at
Capitol Hill. Run to the Hill is another
once a year opportunity to volunteer and
meet (new) friends. And the Committee
can also use new members.
The Legislative Committee will be at
the Legislative Tent on Randall on Saturday
of Back to the 50’s. Bring your titling
and licensing questions, tell us about
non-oxy stations that aren’t yet on our
‘green sheets’, or just stop by to say hello.

The Start Cart
By Travis Fowler #7791
Here we are again at MSRA’s “Back to the 50’s Weekend” and
your vehicle is having “issues.” What do you do now?
Run all over the fairgrounds looking for that one part you need?
Ask your friends for help whom may or may not be able to help you
until after all the parts stores close?
Maybe your problem is much larger than that and you don’t
even know where to begin.
Unfortunately scenarios like this happen every year at events
and they can happen to anybody. Don’t let this frighten you and
reconsider bringing your vehicle to the show because the Minnesota
Street Rod Association has you covered.
The Start Cart has been in service at the 50’s for the last 13 years
and is there to help any participant who may need assistance during
the event. This cart is equipped with tools, air, jump box, gasoline
and even a tow strap if needed to help aid in any misfortune
(don’t let the size of that little cart fool you it can move very large
vehicles!). The volunteers operating the cart can bring you the tools
you need to help you get back to enjoying the event as quickly as
possible. These volunteers provide a service of bringing you tools
or supplies; they do not attempt to repair your vehicle for you.
How do you get in contact with the Start Cart if help is needed?
Simply find any official with a radio and have them ask for the
Start Cart. Please know where your vehicle is located and where
you will be so the Start Cart can easily find you. It sometimes gets
difficult when the description they get is “I have a red ‘55 Chevy and
I’m wearing a street rodding t shirt.
If your vehicle is having much larger problems than what the
Start Cart can handle they can help get your vehicle safely to the
Michigan Hot Rod Repair Shop located on the grounds on Friday
and Saturday. The Michigan Hot Rod Repair Shop is staffed by
volunteers with seemingly unlimited knowledge and resources
which can help you get your car back up and running as quickly
as possible.
All car & truck
clubs are welcome
John Schneider Appearance
John Richard Schneider (actor,
singer, director, producer, writer)
was born on April 8, 1960, in Mt.
Kisco, New York. John began acting
in school plays and performing
as a magician at children’s parties.
At fourteen John performed in
his Atlanta, Georgia High School
drama club and recorded “The
Auctioneer.” He sang in a barbershop
quartet and graduated from
high school early, as he was anxious
for his acting career to begin.
In 1978, John auditioned for the
role of a “good ol’ boy”, they were
looking for someone 24-30 years
of age, born in the south. John
went into the audition with a six
pack of beer and a torn t-shirt,
telling them he was 24 from Snellville,
Georgia. He won the role of
Bo Duke in the CBS television series
“The Dukes of Hazzard”.
While working on “The Dukes
of Hazzard” John starred in madefor-TV
movies, and recorded four
albums. He co-starred in “Eddie
Macon’s Run” and two TV specials,
“John Schneider Back Home” and
“John Schneider’s White Christmas.”
John wrote and directed the
last episode of “The Dukes of Hazzard”.
In 1983, John Schneider and
Marie Osmond co-founded the
Children’s Miracle Network, a
charity which would raise billions
of dollars for children’s hospitals
throughout the US and Canada.
After the 1985 cancellation of
“The Dukes of Hazzard”, John
continued to work, recording six
albums and four singles for MCA
Records.
Street Rod and Custom of the Year Awards
In 1986, he won the Star of Tomorrow
Award at the Music City
News Country awards and film
credits included “Gus Brown and
Midnight Brewster,” “Cocaine
Wars,” “Stagecoach,” “The Curse,”
“Christmas Comes to Willow
Creek,” “Outback Bound,” and
“Ministry of Vengeance” along the
TV mini-series “Wild Jack.”
In the year 2000, John once again
played Bo Duke in the TV movie
“The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard
in Hollywood”, acted off-Broadway
musicals, “The Civil War” and
guest-starred in movies, TV series
and directed many projects.
In 2006, John’s “ baby” came to
life, “Collier & Co.: Hot Pursuit”
the movie which he wrote, starred,
produced, directed, and edited
was released.
He has continued his successful
career, acting in dozens of TV and
movie roles, and in 2013 founded
a production company, Fairlight
Films.
Each year the Minnesota Street Rod Association presents
awards for STREET ROD AND CUSTOM OF THE
YEAR, one for Rod (pre ‘49) and one for Custom (‘49-’64).
In order to be eligible for this award the vehicles must first
be selected through a series of “Voting Events” sponsored
by MSRA and held around the area, hosted by MSRA or
local member clubs. Each year there are six (6) such events
with two Rods and one Custom selected at each event by
the attending MSRA members.
VOTING
The rules for voting are:
1. All current MSRA members and their spouses attending
the voting event with their membership card in
their possession will receive a ballot.
2. Ballots will be issued only during the registration
time.
3. All ballots MUST be returned during the time limit
posted at the registration area.
SELECTION
1. Any current MSRA member’s vehicle, pre ‘64, is eligible
if it has passed the NSRA Safety Inspection and has
a current Safety Inspection Sticker displayed on the window.
The vehicle safety inspection requirements are listed
elsewhere in this Visitor’s Guide.
2. The previous year’s Street Rod and Custom of the
Year winners are not eligible.
3. The Street Rods and Custom nominated at an event
are automatically “in” for the remainder of the season.
4. All of the year’s nominees are included in the Street
Rod and Custom of the Year ballot distributed in November
LineChaser. Each current member and spouse has one
vote.
5. To be eligible for nomination for Custom of the Year,
vehicles shall have a minimum of three (3) body modifications
as verified by the MSRA board and display an MSRA
Custom Certified sticker on the windshield.
As you see the competition is fairly simple. The important
thing is to have your vehicle NSRA Safety inspected
at the beginning of the season. Then attend the Voting
Events and hope your rod or custom catches the eyes of
enough fellow members to receive the event nomination.
What if you receive the nomination? You will be presented
with an award plaque engraved with a likeness of
your vehicle. You will receive the original four-color artwork,
matted and ready for hanging. You will be a featured
in Rodder Profile of the Month in the LineChaser. If voted
the “Street Rod and Custom of the Year” winner, you will
be awarded possession of the Traveling Trophy for a year, a
five-foot replica of an antique gas pump for the Rod winner,
or a louvered column with an Appleton spotlight for
the Custom winner. You also receive a special plaque commemorating
your Street Rod and Custom of the year win
and the admiration of your fellow rodders.
GOOD LUCK!

Vehicle Safety Inspection Requirements
MSRA and NSRA both feel that safe vehicles are a very important part of the street rodding sport.
Because of this, both associations use the NSRA Safety Inspection sticker as a requirement for consideration
of many awards. In MSRA, you must have a current NSRA safety sticker to be eligible for MSRA
Rod or Custom of the Year. If you have questions about the NSRA Safety program, please contact your
NSRA Safety rep.
The National Street Rod Association® vehicle safety inspection may be voided by modifications or
deterioration of any system components. A new inspection can be requested at any time and is recommended
if modifications are made to the vehicle or any of its components. Certification sticker is not transferable.
Completion of the NSRA vehicle inspection warrants only that the vehicle complies with equipment requirements recommended
by the National Street Rod Association®. The National Street Rod Association® vehicle safety inspection is only
advisory and is not to be construed as an official legal clearance, and the National Street Rod Association®, its employees,
officers, delegates, agents, or anyone assisting the Association assumes no responsibility for this advisory clearance.
Minnesota Statutes 2015 169.79 Vehicle
Registration; Displaying License Plates
Subdivision 1. Registration required. No person shall
operate, drive, or park a motor vehicle on any highway
unless the vehicle is registered in accordance with the
laws of this state and has the number plates or permit
confirming that valid registration or operating authority
has been obtained, except as provided in sections
168.10 and 168.12, subdivision 2f, as assigned to it by
the commissioner of public safety, conspicuously displayed
thereon in a manner that the view of any plate
or permit is not obstructed. A plate issued under section
168.27 or a permit issued under chapter 168 may
be displayed on a vehicle in conjunction with expired
registration whether or not it displays the license plate
to which the last registration was issued.
Subd. 2. Semitrailer. If the vehicle is a semitrailer, the
number plate displayed must be assigned to the registered
owner and correlate to the documentation on
file with the department.
Subd. 3. Rear display of single plate. If the vehicle
is a motorcycle, motor scooter, motorized bicycle,
motorcycle sidecar, trailer registered at greater than
3,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW), semitrailer,
or vehicle displaying a dealer plate, then one license
plate must be displayed horizontally or vertically, for a
motorcycle issued vertical license plates under section
168.12, subdivision 2a, with the identifying numbers
and letters facing outward from the vehicle and must
be mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
Subd. 3a. Small trailer. If the vehicle is a trailer with
3,000 pounds or less GVW with lifetime registration,
the numbered plate or sticker must be adhered to the
side of the trailer frame tongue near the hitch.
Subd. 4. Collector’s vehicle. If the vehicle is (1) a collector’s
vehicle with a pioneer, classic car, collector, or
street rod license; (2) a vehicle that meets the requirements
of a pioneer, classic, or street rod vehicle except
that the vehicle is used for general transportation
purposes; or (3) a vehicle that is of model year 1972
or earlier, not registered under section 168.10, subdivision
1c, and is used for general transportation purposes,
then one plate must be displayed on the rear of
the vehicle, or one plate on the front and one on the
rear, at the discretion of the owner.
Subd. 5. Truck-tractor, road-tractor, or farm truck.
If the vehicle is a truck-tractor, road-tractor, or farm
truck, as defined in section 168.002, subdivision 8, but
excluding from that
definition semitrailers
and trailers, then
one plate must be
displayed on the front
of the vehicle.
Subd. 6. Other motor
vehicles. If the motor vehicle is any
kind of motor vehicle other than those provid- ed for
in subdivisions 2 to 4, one plate must be displayed on
the front and one on the rear of the vehicle.
Subd. 7. Plate fastened and visible. All plates must
be (1) securely fastened so as to prevent them from
swinging, (2) displayed horizontally with the identifying
numbers and letters facing outward from the
vehicle, and (3) mounted in the upright position. The
person driving the motor vehicle shall keep the plate
legible and unobstructed and free from grease, dust, or
other blurring material so that the lettering is plainly
visible at all times. It is unlawful to cover any assigned
letters and numbers or the name of the state of origin
of a license plate with any material whatever, including
any clear or colorless material that affects the
plate’s visibility or reflectivity.
Subd. 8. Plate registration stickers. As viewed facing
the plates:
(a) License plates issued to vehicles registered under
section 168.017 must display the month of expiration
in the lower left corner of each plate and the year of
expiration in the lower right corner of each plate.
(b) License plates issued to vehicles registered under
section 168.127 must display either fleet registration
validation stickers in the lower right corner of
each plate or distinctive license plates, issued by the
registrar, with “FLEET REG” displayed on the bottom
center portion of each plate.
(c) License plates issued after July 1, 2008, requiring
validation must display the month of expiration in the
lower left corner of each plate and the year of expiration
in the lower right corner of the plate.
Subd. 9.Tax-exempt vehicle marking. Vehicles
displaying tax-exempt plates issued under section
16B.581 or 168.012 must have vehicle markings that
comply with section 168.012, subdivision 1.
Who Ya Gonna Call?
Marne & Dave Lemke
“Who Ya Gonna Call” Coordinators
Many of us enjoy taking a road trip to other car shows
across the country. Some of us travel 200 miles to go to a
show, and others may travel 2,000 miles and more. Sometimes
unfortunately we may encounter a little bad luck with
our street rods breaking down.
That’s where MSRA’s “Who Ya Gonna Call” comes in very
handy. “Who Ya Gonna Call” is made up of strictly MSRA volunteers
from coast to coast who are willing to come to your
aid. They can either help repair your vehicle, give directions
Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House
Do you, or anyone one you know, have
pop tabs sitting around and you don/t know
what to do with them? Well, I would be
happy to take them from you. At the MSRA
Back to the 50’s there are two (2) locations
where you may drop off your pop tabs. You
can bring them to the MSRA Headquarters
located on the corner of Cossgrove St and
Randall, and also to the Information Booth
located on the corner of Dan Patch and Underwood. Last year
donations from spectators, participants, car clubs, and MSRA
members totaled over 3,800 pounds of pop tabs. Our goal this
to an auto shop or just answer a question.
We have over 300 volunteers on our “Who Ya Gonna Call”
list and we are always looking for more volunteers. The “Who
Ya Gonna Call” gives you peace of mind that in the event
something should happen to your vehicle, a fellow Street
Rodder is there to help you. If you would like to volunteer
please stop by and sign up.
Come check out our booth here at the MSRA’s “Back to the
50’s Weekend” located at the Southwest corner of the Randall
and Underwood intersection. We’ll be there Friday, 7 a.m.-6
p.m.; Saturday 7 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
year is 6,000 pounds. So please, if you been waiting to donate
your pop tabs now is the time. This year all you have to do is
bring them to one of the locations. There will be help to weigh
them and to take your name down so I can get your name,
and/or your club’s name, printed in the LineChaser as a contributor.
Each tab you save goes to helping out a family stay
at the Ronald McDonald House as their child recovers from a
serious illness. So please, let’s all show that we care about the
Ronald McDonald house and the super work it does for all
of the families. Pull those POP TABS OFF! Have a great and
fun weekend! Please drive carefully and most of all please be
SAFE!!
Help is Only Minutes Away
Our highly qualified First Responders, Emergency
Medical Technicians and Paramedics are ready to render
care for that “just in case” emergency medical situation
you may encounter while attending the Back to
the 50’s Weekend. The following information below
will educate attendees what to expect if you or others
you are with experience this type of emergency medical
situation.
1.) First and foremost STAY CALM! Help is only
minutes away.
2.) GET HELP IMMEDIATELY: Do not leave the injured or ill person alone.
When possible send someone nearby to contact any staff member on a cart with a
radio to dispatch First Responders to your area or call 651-632-2710. They can also
look around to see if any First Aid Team members are in the vicinity. When in doubt
call 911. If 911 is called please still try to contact and/or locate the First Aid Team
volunteer at 651-632-2710 or an MSRA staff with a radio. The First Aid Team can
and will immediately render care while 911 is in route.
3.) STAY IN PLACE...........once medical personnel are summoned, it will be easier
for them to find your location. Staying in place will also prevent dispatch from
sending multiple staff members to the same medical situation.
What will Happen:
4.) A team of approximately 2 or 3 plus volunteer members will respond to assess
the situation (sometimes on foot or by cart). Once medical personnel arrive they
will begin to ask questions regarding the incident, obtain medical information and
administer a first set of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse and respirations) and render
first aid if necessary. First Aid Team personnel are instructed to record and complete a
medical form for each incident where medical care was rendered per MSRA Board of
Directors. At this time the staff will then determine the need and /or recommendation
whether or not transportation by ambulance to a medical facility is necessary. If
ambulance transportation is not necessary the patient will be requested to sign the
response medical form refusing transportation by ambulance.
5.) If transportation is recommended an ambulance will be dispatched to the fairgrounds
to transport patient to the nearest appropriate facility. (nearest hospitals to
the fairgrounds listed below)
Children’s Hospital & Clinics of MN-St. Paul: 345 N. Smith Ave., St. Paul
United Hospital: 333 N. Smith Ave., St. Paul 55102-2389 Contact: 651-241-8000
6.) Some medical situations may not require immediate medical attention but may
be recommended that you still seek medical attention for your condition as soon as
possible. You would then be advised to have a family member or friend drive you
to the hospital or urgent care to see a physician. Nearest hospitals are listed above
Quoted from the Emergency Medical Technician oath: I shall also share my medical
knowledge with those who may benefit from what I have learned. I will serve unselfishly
and continuously in order to help make a better world for all mankind. While I continue to
keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life, and the practice of the art,
respected by all men, in all times.
situation occurs!
Each volunteer team member can
highly visible safety green T-shirt with
“First Aid” printed in red, on the front
and back of the shirt, while they are
large red medical backpack when they
are walking out-and-about.
First Aid team members/crews
can be located at the first aid station,
walking out-and-about, and on golf
Team members that are assigned to
carts will be wearing the safety green t-
shirts as well. The carts will be marked
“First Aid” and will display a medical
flag to be easily identified.
Please be advised that our First Aid
staff on carts will be allowed to travel
on one way streets ANY ways to assist.
So please “Make Way” and let us
through! When called to an emergency
situation we will take the shortest route
available to get help there quickly!
If you need first aid help contact ANY
staff members with a radio and/or call
651-632-2710. In case of an emergency
continue to dial 911 and then call the
First Aid Team immediately, 651-632-
2710. We will then be able to dispatch
First Aid Team members to the emergency
for immediate medical attention.
When you call for medical help please
remain stationary so the First Aid Team
can easily locate where you are at!

Inside MSRA History
By Sandy & Jerry Felde
This is a banner year for
us. We have been the MSRA
historians for nearly 25 years.
We’ve collected LineChasers
from the first one in 1969 ‘til
today and will continue the
program for as long as we are
able. We have begun collecting
MSRA articles of interest
over the years from members
who want to clean out, but not
toss.
And, with the help of Marne
Lemke, we will be building a
limited display at Back to the
50’s beginning this year. Craft
Fair coordinators, Brian and
Jane Nelson, have offered us
a location on the North side
of the Cruise-N-Art Craft Fair
building for the display.
We have found a permanent
storage space which will be
open to members -- upon approval
– and it will be passed
on to another volunteer upon
approval by the Board of Directors
when we are no longer
able to maintain it ourselves.
Please come and view the
display. MSRA has a wonderful
and exciting history of
nearly 50 years and we are
very proud to show it to the
world.
A note: If you have any items
you would like to see included
in the permanent history files
and may be displayed at an
upcoming Back to the 50’s or
even at next year’s 50th celebration
of MSRA, please bring
it to Back to the 50’s or call
Jerry or Sandy Felde at 651-
459-2468 and we will see what
arrangements can be made to
get it to us.
Never too late
By Kary Taylor
I was medically discharged from the United States Army in October 1983 after four years of service. This is
not how I wanted to leave the service. Even though I was honorably discharged, I was bitter for many years.
As the injuries I received during my time in the Army worsened, I entered the VA medical system and started
to receive treatment for my injuries. During my visits to the VA, I saw countless veterans of all levels with
injuries, many worse than mine, and I decided to get off the bitter pity pot and start thinking about what I
could do to help other vets.
I searched the internet for ideas and one of the things I ran across was the RED shirt Friday movement
(http://redshirtfridays.org). RED stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. This movement to wear red shirts
on every Friday until all our troops come home struck me as a great way to support our troops, so I began to
buy and wear RED shirts on Fridays. Leading this effort for the company I work for, we bought and handed
out RED shirt Friday shirts to all of our employees, and from there it spread to other company divisions. We
also did a fundraiser walk for vets and it was fantastic to see how many people were willing to show their
support. A little spark of inspiration sure can turn into a flame!
Last year as I was sitting at the VA waiting to be called in by the doctor, someone approached me and
handed me a flier and invitation to Veterans Lake. I didn’t even know such a lake existed. I went there to see
what it was about with my 15-year-old son, Noah, and we had great time. First we caught 10 fish out on
the lake. After returning to shore and turning in our fish to be cleaned, my son got together with a disabled
vet who was wheelchair bound and helped
him fish, and I helped load wheelchairbound
and other disabled vets onto boats
and pontoons so they could go out on the
water and fish. There were so many people
volunteering to make this happen. People
volunteered their boats, and many more
volunteered their time cutting potatoes,
shucking husks off corn and cooking fish.
The camaraderie among all was inspiring
as we feasted on the day’s catch. The Veterans
Lake event and on-site memorial were
encouraging to me as a vet and are a great
way to support each other as comrades. I
encourage you to go check out Veterans
Lake and all its monuments and also check
out the events on the website, http://www.
veteranslake.com.
I encourage and challenge you to find
something you can relate to and be that
spark that turns into a flame.
T6 Flyover
The T6 Flyover is Saturday, with Sunday as the rain
date.
The article below has been reprinted in its entirety from the
LineChaser, as told by Chuck Datko.
Chuck Datko, #22417, was a Spartan car club
member and then joined the Torquers in ‘64 when
they were down on the island. He knows all of the
old guys, like Jerry Johnson, Ron White and Billy
Bissonett.
T-6 Thunder North American Flight Team formed
16 years ago and they are coming again to our Back
to the 50’s. The first year the group did a flyover at
Back to the 50’s, it was purely by chance. They were
on our way back from an air show and his brother,
Frank #L-11145 suggested they fly over Back to the
50’s. Then they met Terry Stade and the “rest is history.”
The aircraft are all North American AT6s used
during WWII for training and in the Korean War.
They were called “forward air controllers.” They
would fly low and slow and mark targets. Then jets
came in and did the bombing.
The group does an annual flyover for the Northern
Knights who have a memorial service. As a
matter of fact, they are mostly involved in vet funerals
and memorials. Probably one half of their events
are funerals. They’ve also entertained for the Minnesota
Twins, the Vikings and Gophers, Concordia
College and the Minneapolis Torchlite parade.

“Rockin’ Robin” – BOBBY DARIN
The Memories will be returning to MSRA’s “Back to the 50’s Weekend” on Sunday, June 19th.
Tim Stevens and Warren Petryk first met as six-year olds on the bleachers of the Boyceville,
Wisconsin, High School Gym in 1961 while watching their older brothers play basketball. They
began performing music together during their grade school years with both playing trombone in
the Junior High Band.
Starting their freshmen year in the fall of 1969, Tim & Warren had every class together, for all
four years of their high school career. Studying together, playing sports together, and spending
extended hours in the band & choir room with music instructor Ken Kline, nurtured a friendship
and bond that remains strong today.
In the summer of 1972, between their Junior and Senior years of High School along with friend
and classmate John Lynch, they formed a dance band called “The Pickle Dillies”. They were scheduled
to perform for two events (The Cucumber Festival Dance & the wedding dance for Bill &
Joy Keyes), but things didn’t turn out exactly as planned as in August 2016 The Memories will
celebrate their 44th Anniversary.
At their peak, “The Boys from Boyceville” were full-time entertainers and traveled from coast to
coast on the road over 200 days a year. In 1995, they scaled back to a part-time schedule, and in
September of 2000 Tim and Warren began a new phase when they started performing their shows
as a duo. Today, they continue the tradition of their trademark – “Music, Laughter and Wonderful
Times” by appearing at a select number of events each year.
In 1986, they performed their first Christmas concert at the Mabel Tainter Theater. Since that
year, their Christmas Concerts have become an annual event, featuring traditional Christmas
carols and favorite songs of the season.
Stevens said, “People quite often ask us – how long are you guys going to keep singing?”
His reply to that question:
“There are three very important things that keep us going. We continue to love singing together.
People keep coming to hear us sing. And, we are still able to carry our equipment. If one of
those three things stops happening, then I guess we might have to consider retiring from stage!”

Sunday Church Services
by Susan & Chaplain Connie Warner
Susan and I hope you are getting all you expected
and more out of this year’s MSRA’s “Back
to the 50’s Weekend”. We’re glad you are here.
We’d like to invite you to join us at the MSRA’s
“Back to the 50’s Weekend” Sunday Morning
worship service at 11 a.m., at the bandshell near
the Space Needle. The service is non-denominational
and over the years a lot of folks have
found it to be a good place to relax and reflect
on Sunday morning. In truth we’d probably all
be at church if we were home anyway. Come and
spend some time with other people of faith. We
get to sing some songs, enjoy the voices of the
“Memories”, read some scripture, hear a sermon
and pray.
We have been thrilled to be a part of this service
for along time. It started small, years ago, and has
grown through the years. We’ve worshiped together
in water puddles, tents, the Coliseum and
now for a number of years at the Bandshell.
We hope you can join us by including worship
in your MSRA’s “Back to the 50’s Weekend”!
See me at my booth on
