Side Trips
Thick clumps of water weeds had taken
up residence by our boat and wave runner
lifts. Our neighbors couldn’t begin
to get their PWC out of the lift as the weeds
would clog the motor if they turned it on,
and they were too far
in to tow the vessel out
with a rope.
Fed up, we tackled
the mess last Saturday
morning. Armed with
the few tools we could
find in the garage - one
rake and two plastic
snow scoops - we tackled
the tangled mess.
Turning a boat motor
on got the water moving
to accomplish our
MYRNA
WAGNER
ultimate goal of sending the mess out to sea.
Being tangled was a blessing and a curse.
Once things started moving, the weeds
pulled each other along, but getting things
started proved tricky.
The rake had an aluminum handle, so
it didn’t take long before the handle bent.
And it wasn’t much later that the whole
thing snapped in two.
The job soon became one of those situations
where you can’t decide if you’re done.
The water certainly looked better, and we
could get the wave runners out, but we kept
finding more weeds.
I spent most of my efforts using the broken
end of the rake handle to pull twisted weeds
from around dock posts and hoist legs.
I had been working for more than an
hour when I realized there was blood trickling
down my leg from a cut above my knee.
Only after I spotted that cut did I realize
that my palms were covered in them - tiny
red marks that felt like dozens of paper cuts.
A broken aluminum handle obviously
Iowa was Information
PUBLISHERS AND not PRINTERS the best tool for the job. It did the
trick, but I am paying the price.
Guess the weeds got the final laugh.
a little bit of swing, a lot of fun!
Dick Bauman Big Band keeps regular gig at PLAC
The Dick Bauman Big Band boasts
a loyal and lively audience and
will be entertaining crowds
through the summer once against in
Pomerantz Hall on the lower level
of the Pearson Lakes Art Center in
Okoboji.
The band is in its 19th year performing
and it’s the third summer in
a row the Pearson Lakes Art Center
has hosted the shows. They’re an
18-piece ensemble that plays songs
by the famous bands and arrangers of
the 1930s and ‘40s including (but not
limited to): Benny Goodman, Duke
Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller,
Tommy Dorsey, Quincy Jones, Louis
Bellson, Les Brown, Sammy Nestico,
Jimmy Dorsey, and more.
Every Monday through Labor Day
with the expection of the Fourth of July,
fans of big band music can get in the
groove for just $10 with doors opening
at 6:30 p.m. and the show running
from about 7-9 p.m. each week.
“We were at the Hollywood Grille
then The Inn and now here,” drummer
and organizer Greg Forney said.
“The acoustics here are great and we
have a great loyal following that keeps
coming back year after year.”
Forney has been part of the group
since its inception in 1997 by retired
Iowa Bandmaster Hall of Fame member
Dick Bauman, who tragically
passed away from cancer during the
second year of the band.
The group forged on at his request
and has garnered a faithful following
through nearly two decades of performances.
“We just like to play music and it’s
fun to get together with other musicians,”
Forney said. “We have musicians
who drive in from all over the
place each week.”
A couple of those musicians are
tenor saxophone players Jim Schroeder
and Carol Ayres Stueven, both of
whom have been performing with the
Big Band for more than a decade.
“This is a great chance to play with
great musicians for an audience that is
so appreciative that they’ve been coming
back for years,” Ayres said. “It’s
fun, happy music from a time when
every generation of the family loved
the same type of music.”
Schroeder, who hails from Le Mars,
said it’s cool to see how the crowd
reacts to different types of music and
the musicians themselves.
Some react by simply smiling and
tapping their toes while others can’t
resist hitting the dance floor for multiple
numbers.
“Big band music is pretty special.
It was the popular dance music of its
day and is just fun and happy music,”
Forney said. “We have people who
grew up with it who love hearing it
again and younger audience members
sometimes who enjoy it as well. I encourage
everyone to give the music a
try and see what the show is like. We
have a lot of fun.” F
Spitfire Grill,” opens the week of June
14-19, and it’s the first in a season that
will bring both well-loved shows as
well as new plays to the stage.
“The theme for this season is Tradition
Inspiring Innovation,” said
Kirstin Racicot, the public relations
director at Okoboji Summer Theatre.
“It basically says that the ideal
goal for the season was to offer some
shows that were familiar and some
that were more innovative — ones
that will make the audience think a
bit more.”
The season’s first show is a good
example of what OST is working to
achieve with this season. It’s a musical,
but not one that many people
have heard much about.
“In ‘The Spitfire Grill’ the music is
fantastic and it’s actually won a lot
of incredible music awards, but most
people don’t know anything about
this show,” Racicot said. “So, we’re really
excited to be offering this show.”
This show centers around a small
town in Wisconsin and is based on
the journey of a young woman named
Percy and the people she meets in this
small town.
“It’s not a comedy but there are
some moments in it and some humor,
but it is not labeled a comedy.
There are some darker moments, but
it truly is a heartwarming show,” Racicot
said.
While this musical is more on the
innovation end of the spectrum, there
will be some well loved, traditional
shows also in the lineup.
“We’ll be doing the ‘Cinderella’ this
year. We tried to do it last year and
couldn’t make it happen. It’ll be the
classic Rodgers and Hammerstein
production. It’s a show for all ages,”
Racicot said.
Another traditional show that OST
is bringing to the stage this year is
“The Odd Couple,” and they’re bringing
back some actors who are Okoboji
Summer Theatre traditions in their
own right.
“Rob Doyen will be back and he’ll
be playing in ‘The Odd Couple.’ We’ll
also have an OST alum coming back
who is currently doing a lot of work
in L.A. with Disney who’ll be playing
opposite Rob and I know he’s really
excited to be working onstage with
Rob.”
“The Sound of Music,” another
Rodgers and Hammerstein classic,
will wrap up the season, but even
these traditional shows will have their
own unique twists.
“They’ll all have a spin to them or
a new twist — maybe a new way of
seeing something,” Racicot said. “Just
like last season when we put our own
twist on ‘To Kill A Mockingbird,’ we’ll
be doing the classic tale of ‘The Diary
of Anne Frank,’ but we’ll be doing it
with a twist again.”
In general, Okoboji Summer Theatre
is hoping this season helps build
the anticipation for yet another season.
“We’re just hoping with this season
that the energy keeps building toward
the 60th season.
“We don’t want to overlook anything
in the 59th season though and I
think we’ve come up with the perfect
mix of shows,” Racicot said. F
Sheldon Summer Theatre varies offerings this summer
It’s a varied bill of fare for Sheldon
theatre fans this summer.
The Sheldon High School Summer
Theatre will present classic and
acclaimed comedies, a story from a
popular series of children’s books, a
musical based on a hit movie, and a
powerful story set during the horrors
of the Holocaust and World War II.
All shows will be presented alternately
at the high school auditorium
and in the school commons, with the
opening performances in the auditorium.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5
for K-12 students and free for seniors
65 and older and kids 4 and under.
Tickets are available at the door.
The 44th year of the only Iowa high
school repertory company kicked off
Thursday with “You Can’t Take It With
You” and runs through July 16 with
the final performance of “And Then
They Came For Me.” Here’s a look at
this summer’s offerings.
“You Can’t Take It With You” is a
classic comedy in three acts written
by perhaps the most accomplished
theatre duo of all time, George
S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. After
its Broadway premiere in 1936, it
claimed the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for
Drama, oddly enough, before being
filmed under the same title in 1938,
starring James Stewart. It won Oscars
for Best Picture and Best Director.
The Vanderhof family at the center
of the play is a group of cheerful, if
bumbling eccentrics. When a daughter
brings her boyfriend, the son of a
powerful banker, home, mayhem and
hilarity ensue.
“You Can’t Take It With You” will be
presented at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday
and Saturday, June 9-11.
“The Soapy Murder Case” is a madcap
comedy and mystery set in a New
York City penthouse apartment.
Written by Tim Kelley, the play tells
the story of Horatio Tucker, the creator
of Tucker’s Tasty Pudding Powder
and All-Purpose Detergent, who assembles
the cast and crew of “The Best
Tears of Our Lives,” which is, fittingly,
a TV soap opera that he sponsors.
When a dead body is discovered, the
chase for the killer is on!
“The Soapy Murder Case” will be
staged at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday,
June 16-18.
“Macbeth Did It” is about a local
theatre company’s “double, double
toil and trouble” while attempting to
produce the Scottish play.
In the play, director Larry Rencher
tries to get realistic performances from
unskilled but dedicated local actors,
including Dolly Dibble, the wife of
the owner of the theater, who is cast
as the bloody Lady Macbeth. Rencher
finally stalks off in a huff. Will the
play be ready for opening night?
“Macbeth Did It” will be presented
at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, June 23-
25.
“Ramona Quimby” was adapted by
Len Jenkin from the popular books
by Beverly Cleary. It tells the story of
two quarrelsome sisters, Ramona and
Beezus, and their family in contemporary
Oregon.
After their father is fired from his
job, and the family endures struggles,
the girls begin to realize that while
you may not always like your sister,
you will always love her.
“Ramona Quimby,” the children’s
show for the season, will be presented
7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 30
and July 1, and at 2 p.m. Saturday,
July 2.
Who doesn’t like a musical about a
charming con man?
“Catch Me If You Can,” a sort of
modern “The Music Man,” is a musical
adaptation of the story of con artist
Frank Abagnale Jr., who wrote a 1980
autobiography about his scams and
frauds that was the source of the 2002
hit movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio
and Tom Hanks.
The musical, with a libretto by Terrence
McNally and a theatrical score
by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman,
was mounted on Broadway in 2011
and earned a best actor Tony and a
nomination for best musical.
The play opens with Abagnale
cornered by the FBI. He offers to tell
his story of how he became a master
charlatan and the play unfolds from
there.
“Catch Me If You Can” will be presented
at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday,
July 7-8, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10.
The season concludes with “And
Then They Came For Me: Remembering
the World of Anne Frank,” the
moving story of Anne Frank and other
Jews who were victimized by the Nazis
before and during World War II.
American author James Still created
a multimedia production, with videotapes
of Frank’s friends Ed “Hello”
Silverberg, who died in 2015, and Eva
Geiringer Schloss, who is still alive,
telling their story as well as actors
depicting the events of those years.
Silverberg, Frank’s first boyfriend,
and Schloss survived the war, unlike
Frank, who was one of 6 million Jews
slaughtered by the German government,
led by dictator Adolf Hitler.
This semi-documentary account of
the horrors of the war and extermination
policy of the Nazis has received
widespread critical acclaim.
“And Then They Came For Me” will
be staged at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday,
July 14-16. F
Christian music festival sets up in Sheldon June 17-18
RiseFest is set to begin its second
decade with a bang. For the 11th
year the Christian music festival
will be bringing together a fantastic
lineup of bands, musicians, ministers
and more for a weekend of familyfriendly
fun.
“It’s crazy to think about how
RiseFest has grown,” said Rob Roozeboom,
the Rise Ministries president
and founder. “I’m not sure we really
even thought about how long it could
go when we were first starting out and
has just grown immensely the past
several years.”
The festival has changed locations
over the years and now resides on an
alfalfa field along Country Club Road
in Sheldon. \
Some of the dreams that Roozeboom
said have been “great fun to see
come true” include the expansion to a
two-day festival as well as the expansion
of camping availability.
This year they are up to 119 different
camping spots with tent availability as
well as RV camping including electric
hook-ups.
“Watching the crowd grow has been
wonderful and I’m excited to see what
God does this year,” Roozeboom
said. “I’d love to see the campground
full with the grills going and Frisbees
flying. People bringing their friends,
family and co-workers for a fun night
or for the whole weekend.”
The weekend will feature a lineup
including the likes of The Lasting
Hope and Jordan Feliz, Building 429,
Mandisa, Crowder, Newsboys, Chris
Tomlin and many more.
There will also be plenty going on
in the seminar tent, youth area, kids
zone and all-new tween area at different
times throughout the festival.
“It’s super exciting to have Newsboys
back, along with Building 429,
Friday will be a dynamite night,” Roozeboom
said.
“I was driving past the grounds
the other day and Chris Tomlin just
happened to come on the radio and
I thought, ‘Wow, he’s going to be here
leading worship on an alfalfa field in
Sheldon.’ We’re blessed to have some
of the biggest names in Christian rock
coming to a small town and being
able to see them all for this price is
unreal. These musicians are dynamic
and will move you in different ways.”
Roozeboom also notes that RisFest
is more than music, it’s a mission and
an opportunity to raise awareness for
many ministries.
RiseFest partners with Soles4Souls
and Village Northwest Unlimited
encourage festival goers to bring their
old footwear to donate in the Demco
wagon on the festival grounds.
“It really culminates into a small
parting of watching God work and
seeing how He moves in our hearts,”
Roozeboom said.
“We got to see some dreams come
true last year and are praying we get to
again this year.”
Families, friends and all festival
goers are sure to have a fantastic time
once again at RiseFest this Father’s
Day weekend in Sheldon. F
Going wild
Iowa Lakeside Laboratory
hosts Wild Wednesdays
Iowa Lakeside Laboratory is once
again inviting you and your kids or
grandkids to their property to go a
little wild.
On Wednesday evenings, starting
June 15 at 7 p.m., Iowa Lakeside
Laboratory will once again be hosting
their Wild Wednesday programs.
These free, family-oriented events
are an outreach program that has
been going on for many years.
“Since 1999, we’ve been hosting
these Wild Wednesday programs.
Lakeside’s traditional audience is college
level students and we wanted to
share what we do with the broader
community more of what goes on
at Lakeside Lab and the wonders of
nature we learn about here,” said Jane
Shuttleworth, the education coordinator
at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory.
“Friends of Lakeside Lab help sponsor
these programs and they are the organization
who has worked hard to help
us develop these outreach programs.”
This year’s theme for the Wild
Wednesday programs is “Nature’s
Engineers.” Engineering isn’t just a
feat for humans, according to Shuttleworth.
It’s also something that occurs
all over in nature.
“A lot of awareness is out there about
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math) education right now and
we decided that nature is a wonderful
way to learn about STEM,” Shuttleworth
said. “There are a lot of creatures,
like ants, who are great engineers.”
The first Wednesday program will
focus on “Building Shelters: Animal
Homes,” but other topics throughout
the summer will include pollination,
water animals, animal communication,
simple machines, and more.
“We have a lot of examples to
choose from in our first class about
animal homes. The animal kingdom
has a large variety of animals — not
just vertebrates, but many invertebrates
and we all share the same
problem of how to find shelter,”
Shuttleworth said.
The programs are really geared
toward curious people of all ages including
children.
“These are family programs. There
are a lot of kids, but there are also many
adults who come who don’t bring
children but they come because they
enjoy the children’s questions,” Shuttleworth
said. “Children make it such
fun because they have such enthusiasm
and aren’t afraid to ask questions.
That’s what makes learning fun.”
There’s more to do at Iowa Lakeside
Laboratory. Go and check it out —
maybe even go a little wild. F
Photography, watercolors, oils and
fabric art. Plenty of pottery and
encaustic work as well. It’s all on
display at Arts on Grand in Spencer
through most of the month of June.
The 13 local artists with work on
display all have work for sale in the
Arts on Grand gallery shop.
Hence the name of the exhibit,
“Pots and Pictures: From the Shop to
the Gallery.”
“This show is really fun for me because
I really like all these artists and I
like getting them all together,” curator
Joanne Schar said.
All of them includes Evelyn Ruhnke,
the oldest of the artists in the show
at 90 years of age.
It is her flower petals and leaf art
that greet visitors upon entering the
gallery.
“Evelyn just turned 90 and was here
for the reception. It’s pretty amazing
that she’s still doing such great artwork,”
Schar said.
While there is a great variety
amongst the artists and their styles,
Shar limited them to just three examples
apiece as a way to tell a short
story of their artistic talents.
Schar describes Karen Ruddy’s
mixed media work as “whimsical”
and know many will also recognize
the work of retired Spencer High
School art teacher Mel Myers.
It is his intricately carved vases, urns
and bowls that make up the “pots”
part of the “Pots and Pictures” exhibit.
“All the markings on his pottery are
done by hand before firing representing
hours of work before they’re ready
for the shop,” Schar said.
Most of the art in the exhibit is also
for sale if a certain work intrigues you
enough to want to take it home.
Unique for this exhibit will be the
floral work of the Clay County Federated
Garden Club, which will create
a variety of floral arrangements to
supplement certain works of art as
part of an event called “Art in Bloom”
during Flagfest weekend.
The arrangements will be set up on
Thursday, June 9 and be available for
public viewing on both Friday and
Saturday.
Pots and Pictures aplenty, and a few
flowers for good measure, make for a
lively gallery show this month at Arts
on Grand. F
Sunday will feature a poker
run for both cars and bikes.
Maurice has a reason to celebrate. It’s turning
125 years old this year, and some
citizens of Maurice have gotten together
to pull together a two-day event, June 17-18, to
mark the birthday.
The event starts on Friday night with some
old-school fun.
“We have a community carnival on Friday
night with a free pulled pork supper and then
old school carnival games and pony rides,” said
Mike Vander Stelt, the co-chair of the Maurice
125th Quasquicentennial. “Then we’ll have
bingo and at dusk we’ll be having a movie in the
park. It’s going
to be an
old-time fun
night.”
Then on
Saturday, it
will be a full
day of fun
events.
The day
starts with
a fun run/walk, which is followed by a vendor
fair, car and tractor show, art and quilt show,
inflatables for kids and carnival games.
At 10:30 a.m. there will be the dedication of
the Fireman Statue in front of the fire station.
Following that, there will be old-time crafts for
kids and they’ll be opening the Time Capsule
that was buried in 1991.
“We’ll be cracking that open and have it on
display. It should be interesting to see what they
put in there,” Vander Stelt said.
There will be a free hot dog lunch and horse
drawn wagon ride historical tours around the
town will begin.
A Kiddie Parade will get kids out to decorate
themselves, their bikes, wagons and even their
dogs at 1:30 p.m.
Local musicians, the Wickers will perform at
2:30 p.m. and then the town will be re-burying
the Time Capsule and there will be a raffle drawing
for the fire department. They will be raffling
off a four-wheeler, a leaf and lawn vacuum, a
shotgun and a smoker.
