Output circuits and fieldbus <strong>in</strong>terfaces<br />

RS-485 is the most commonly used transmission technology for PROFIBUS; it is simple,<br />

easy-to-use and cost-effective. It is primarily used for tasks that require high transmission<br />

rates. RS-485 transmission technology uses shielded twisted pair copper cables with one<br />

conductor pair. A Profibus system that is to accommodate more than 32 stations must be<br />

divided <strong>in</strong>to several bus segments. These <strong>in</strong>dividual bus segments with up to 32 stations<br />

each one are connected to each other by repeaters (also referred to as l<strong>in</strong>e amplifiers).<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g table shows the maximum transmission rates <strong>in</strong> relation to permissible l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

length.<br />

Lika l<strong>in</strong>ear encoders with Profibus <strong>in</strong>terface implement Profibus DP (Decentralized Peripherals)<br />

communication protocol and can be set as Class 1 or Class 2 devices.<br />

Encoder class has to be set at device configuration.<br />

Class 1 provides the basic functionalities of DP such as:<br />

• position readout;<br />

• sett<strong>in</strong>g of the count<strong>in</strong>g direction;<br />

• sett<strong>in</strong>g of the preset value;<br />

• 16-byte reduced diagnostic <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Class 2 supports extended enhancements <strong>in</strong> addition to functionalities of Class 1:<br />

• scal<strong>in</strong>g function;<br />

• 63-byte extended diagnostic <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Thanks to Profibus DP, encoders can be coupled reduc<strong>in</strong>g costs and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g performances;<br />

furthermore they fulfil each configuration, parametrization and diagnostic requirement.<br />

Among the parameters available: position readout, count<strong>in</strong>g direction, scal<strong>in</strong>g function,<br />

preset value. Encoders are fitted with diagnostic LEDs and bus term<strong>in</strong>ation resistance.<br />
