SMG is the <strong>in</strong>cremental modular encoder<br />

specifically designed to sense a variety of<br />

ferromagnetic toothed structures which<br />

are used as a passive measurement scale<br />

with different pitches <strong>in</strong> both rotary and l<strong>in</strong>ear<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallations such as toothed-wheels<br />

and racks.<br />

So it is typically <strong>in</strong>tended for speed and position<br />

feedback <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial applications up<br />

to 100,000 RPM such as HSC (High Speed<br />

Cutt<strong>in</strong>g) sp<strong>in</strong>dles of lathes and mills, mach<strong>in</strong>e<br />

tools and CNC mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centres;<br />

assembly equipment, <strong>in</strong>dustrial robots and<br />

manipulators, weld<strong>in</strong>g equipment, torque motors and drive systems <strong>in</strong> general. The sensor is<br />

available with different pitches to accommodate several modules (typically M0.3 and M0.5).<br />

Standard ferromagnetic wheels and racks with optional module versions can be provided;<br />

customized wheels and application solutions with diameters, modules and tooth profiles on<br />

request are further available to meet specific requirements. SMG provides either AB digital<br />

signals through Push-Pull or L<strong>in</strong>e Driver (with /AB <strong>in</strong>verted signals) output circuits or s<strong>in</strong>ecos<strong>in</strong>e<br />

signals through 1Vpp output circuit. An additional Reference signal is available on<br />

request.<br />

Gear/tooth sensors<br />

SMB UHV is the <strong>in</strong>cremental or absolute encoder suitable for both rotary and l<strong>in</strong>ear position<br />

feedback <strong>in</strong> UHV applications where vacuum pressure is as low as 10 -7 torr.<br />

SMB UHV is the first encoder encompass<strong>in</strong>g the magnetic technology <strong>in</strong>stead of the customary<br />

optical scann<strong>in</strong>g for such use <strong>in</strong> vacuum chambers.<br />

Vacuum encoders<br />

The benefits:<br />

• appreciable 50% cost reduction;<br />

• non-contact, ma<strong>in</strong>tenance-free and reliable operation;<br />

• complete <strong>in</strong>sensitivity to use under high vacuum;<br />

• larger mount<strong>in</strong>g tolerances which prevent the need for further adjustments after <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

and set up.<br />

Each component and material of SMB UHV has been especially designed and tested for<br />

use <strong>in</strong> vacuum chambers <strong>in</strong> order to reduce outgass<strong>in</strong>g and contam<strong>in</strong>ation: sens<strong>in</strong>g<br />

head enclosure and substrate <strong>in</strong> sta<strong>in</strong>less steel, appropriate surface treatments and coat<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

special adhesives, Kapton wires are among the design cares taken to meet the demand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

requirements of such critical environment. Because of the use <strong>in</strong> limited space, also the<br />

readhead footpr<strong>in</strong>t has been shrunk to a m<strong>in</strong>imum.<br />

Typical applications under ultra high vacuum <strong>in</strong>clude electronics and semi-conductor <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />

pick & place robots & manipulators, biomedical <strong>in</strong>struments, measur<strong>in</strong>g equipment.<br />
