As president of the <strong>UCSF</strong> Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer<br />

Center, one of my key priorities is to initiate and advance programs<br />

that are developing new anticancer drugs making significant impact<br />

on helping cancer patients live longer and better lives. I recognize this<br />

goal is best accomplished by working in partnership with the broader<br />

life science industry. This searchable abstract book of <strong>UCSF</strong> research<br />

presented at ASCO is a resource for potential partners interested in<br />

identifying world-class faculty engaged in clinical oncology research.<br />

As an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, <strong>UCSF</strong> is<br />

recognized for our outstanding science, extensive resources, depth<br />

and breadth of our research in basic, clinical, and/or population<br />

sciences, as well as cutting edge research that bridges these<br />

scientific areas. Practically this means that our clinicians and basic<br />

scientists work closely together to (1) identify, develop and optimize<br />

novel therapeutics for biological efficacy and clinical utility, (2) assess<br />

tumor status and responsiveness to current therapies, (3) develop<br />

biomarkers for patient stratification and therapeutic response and (4)<br />

advance supportive care options to mitigate the toxicities associated<br />

Ko Research Interests: My work focuses on gastrointestinal malignancies, where I have developed and<br />

led multiple clinical trials, both within <strong>UCSF</strong> and across multiple sites. I am interested in the development<br />

and evaluation of new therapeutic agents ranging from novel cytotoxics to molecular targeted agents to<br />

immunotherapies, with a particular emphasis in pancreatic cancer. This work entails collaborating with<br />

laboratory-based investigators on translational science to identify individual patient/tumor characteristics that<br />

influence prognosis and response to specific therapies. I lead the <strong>UCSF</strong> site committee for gastrointestinal<br />

cancer-specific clinical trial development and serve as chair of the scientific Protocol Review Committee.<br />

Nationally, I sit on the editorial board for multiple peer-reviewed oncology journals, am a member of NCI’s<br />

Pancreatic Cancer Task Force and the NCCN Pancreatic Cancer guidelines committee.<br />

Ko Research Interests: My work focuses on gastrointestinal malignancies, where I have developed and<br />

led multiple clinical trials, both within <strong>UCSF</strong> and across multiple sites. I am interested in the development<br />

and evaluation of new therapeutic agents ranging from novel cytotoxics to molecular targeted agents to<br />

immunotherapies, with a particular emphasis in pancreatic cancer. This work entails collaborating with<br />

laboratory-based investigators on translational science to identify individual patient/tumor characteristics that<br />

influence prognosis and response to specific therapies. I lead the <strong>UCSF</strong> site committee for gastrointestinal<br />

cancer-specific clinical trial development and serve as chair of the scientific Protocol Review Committee.<br />

Nationally, I sit on the editorial board for multiple peer-reviewed oncology journals, am a member of NCI’s<br />

Neuroendocrine Tumors Guidelines Panel member, Board of Directors member for NANETS, and co-chair<br />

Chang Research Interests: My research interest is in the development of novel therapies for patients with brain<br />

Okada Research Interests: As a translational physician scientist, Dr. Okada and his lab are focused on<br />

development of novel immunotherapeutic strategies for brain tumor patients. For example, Dr. Okada<br />

conducted one of the first immune gene therapy trials in patients with malignant glioma. His lab was also the<br />

first to identify and fully characterized cytotoxic T-lymphocyte epitopes for gliomas. Dr. Okada has also<br />

delineated the role of an integrin receptor very late activation antigen-4 and chemokine CXCL10 in efficient<br />

trafficking of T-cells to brain tumor sites. Dr. Okada has integrated these findings to develop a number of<br />

vaccine trials in both adult and pediatric glioma patients. More recently, his group developed a novel chimeric<br />

antigen receptor targeting glioblastoma cells, and are currently conducting a pilot trial.<br />

Butowski Research Interests: My research includes translational research and a wide range of clinical trials,<br />

including those with convection-enhanced delivery (CED) with real-time MRI imaging, targeted agents,<br />

immunotherapy, and combination strategies. I am the Director of Translational Research in Neuro-Oncology<br />

and lead the translational effort on behalf of the <strong>UCSF</strong> Brain Tumor Research Center and Preclinical Core.<br />

My work has helped to create the groundwork for allied research in neuro-oncology and an extensive<br />

<strong>UCSF</strong> clinical trial portfolio for patients with primary brain and spine tumors, including an assortment of<br />

Fong Research Interests: My lab focuses on how the immune system interacts with cancer as well as exploring<br />

tumor immunotherapies in mouse models and in patients. Our primary focus is in cancer immunotherapy.<br />

We investigate how immunotherapies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and cancer vaccines can<br />

enhance anti-tumor immunity both systemically and in the tumor microenvironment. Performing neoadjuvant<br />

immunotherapy trials, we determine how specific therapies can recruit immune effectors in cancer patients.<br />

Moreover, we have studied how clinical responders may differ from clinical non-responders. We are applying<br />

unbiased approaches to studying antigen-specific responses that are modulated in these patients and are<br />

currently developing biomarkers that may be redictive of clinical efficacy.<br />

Friedlander Research Interests: I am a clinical and translational oncologist specializing in cancers of the<br />

genitourinary tract, specifically bladder and prostate cancers. My research is focused on understanding<br />

the basic biology of these malignancies and in developing novel therapeutic ways to treat disease. In<br />

recent years my works has explored the prognostic and predictive value of circulating tumor cells (CTCs)<br />

in these malignancies. In addition to work exploring CTCs as biomarkers of response and resistance, I have<br />

investigated the structural and epigenetic state of advanced prostate cancer, and this work has led to a number<br />

Butowski Research Interests: My research includes translational research and a wide range of clinical trials,<br />

Butowski Research Interests: My research includes translational research and a wide range of clinical trials,<br />

including those with convection-enhanced delivery (CED) with real-time MRI imaging, targeted agents,<br />

immunotherapy, and combination strategies. I am the Director of Translational Research in Neuro-Oncology<br />

and lead the translational effort on behalf of the <strong>UCSF</strong> Brain Tumor Research Center and Preclinical Core.<br />

My work has helped to create the groundwork for allied research in neuro-oncology and an extensive<br />

<strong>UCSF</strong> clinical trial portfolio for patients with primary brain and spine tumors, including an assortment of<br />

immunotherapy trials and surgically based trials. I have also designed investigator initiated trials, including a<br />

clinical trial employing intratumoral delivery with real-time MRI imaging as well as those with a range of novel<br />

targets, molecular markers and imaging biomarkers. I have also authored a number of peer-reviewed papers<br />

Munster Research Interests: My clinical research interests are first-in-human early phase clinical trials of<br />

novel compounds and alternative strategies for the treatment and prevention of cancer. I have been involved<br />

in clinical and translational research in early phase clinical trials since 1998. As the program leader for<br />

Development Therapeutics and the PI of a peer-reviewed basic science lab, my main focus is on translating<br />

preclinical findings into early-stage clinical trials with extensive PK and integration of PD correlative studies<br />

and molecular imaging for patients with advanced stage cancer. My basic research interest is centered on<br />

the role of epigenetic modification in therapy resistance in breast cancer and epigenetic priming. In addition<br />

to studying basic mechanisms of hormone therapy resistance, we have shown that epigenetic modification<br />

plays a crucial role in the hormonal regulation and carcinogenesis of breast cancer.<br />

tumor immunotherapies in mouse models and in patients. Our primary focus is in cancer immunotherapy.<br />

We investigate how immunotherapies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and cancer vaccines can<br />

enhance anti-tumor immunity both systemically and in the tumor microenvironment. Performing neoadjuvant<br />

immunotherapy trials, we determine how specific therapies can recruit immune effectors in cancer patients.<br />

Moreover, we have studied how clinical responders may differ from clinical non-responders. We are applying<br />

unbiased approaches to studying antigen-specific responses that are modulated in these patients and are<br />

Tempero Research Interests: My research focuses on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, especially in<br />

investigational therapeutics. I was a pioneer in the use of mAb-based therapies and helped develop the fixed<br />

dose rate concept for gemcitabine. My group developed effective gemcitabine combinations, provided a<br />

foundation for using CA19-9 as a clinical surrogate for survival and currently is assessing molecular subtypes<br />

and molecular enrichment for selecting new drugs for clinical evaluation. We have a strong emphasis on<br />

immunotherapy. I am a SU2C Dream Team member evaluating innovative immunotherapy approaches in this<br />

disease. I am also co-PI of a U01 award to establish high risk cohorts for testing candidate early diagnosis<br />

biomarkers. I am the <strong>UCSF</strong> Pancreas Center Director and Pancreas Cancer Program Leader. I have served<br />

Fong Research Interests: My lab focuses on how the immune system interacts with cancer as well as exploring<br />

tumor immunotherapies in mouse models and in patients. Our primary focus is in cancer immunotherapy.<br />

We investigate how immunotherapies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and cancer vaccines can<br />

enhance anti-tumor immunity both systemically and in the tumor microenvironment. Performing neoadjuvant<br />

immunotherapy trials, we determine how specific therapies can recruit immune effectors in cancer patients.<br />

Moreover, we have studied how clinical responders may differ from clinical non-responders. We are applying<br />

unbiased approaches to studying antigen-specific responses that are modulated in these patients and are<br />

currently developing biomarkers that may be redictive of clinical efficacy.<br />

Munster Research Interests: My clinical research interests are first-in-human early phase clinical trials of<br />

novel compounds and alternative strategies for the treatment and prevention of cancer. I have been involved<br />

in clinical and translational research in early phase clinical trials since 1998. As the program leader for<br />

Development Therapeutics and the PI of a peer-reviewed basic science lab, my main focus is on translating<br />

preclinical findings into early-stage clinical trials with extensive PK and integration of PD correlative studies<br />

and molecular imaging for patients with advanced stage cancer. My basic research interest is centered on<br />

the role of epigenetic modification in therapy resistance in breast cancer and epigenetic priming. In addition<br />

to studying basic mechanisms of hormone therapy resistance, we have shown that epigenetic modification<br />

plays a crucial role in the hormonal regulation and carcinogenesis of breast cancer.<br />

Smith Research Interests: Our laboratory focuses on identification of therapeutic resistance mechanisms<br />

and novel treatment strategies for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), particularly AML associated with mutations<br />

in Fms-like Tyrosine Kinase-3 (FLT3). FLT3 is the most frequently mutated gene in AML, with constitutively<br />

activating FLT3 internal tandem duplication (ITD) mutations conferring a poor prognosis. We employ<br />

a prototypical “bedside to bench and back” approach to the problem of cancer drug resistance, founded on<br />

the belief that the ultimate pathway to improved cancer therapy begins with translational studies that utilize<br />

samples from patients who have undergone therapy in real time. This strategy allows us to interrogate how<br />

tumors can evolve under the selective pressure of cancer therapy and allows us to devise ways to circumvent<br />

these evolutionary adaptations.<br />

Paris Research Interests: My background is in biophysical chemistry. My research focuses on biomarker<br />

discovery. As a <strong>UCSF</strong> Prostate SPORE program Research Fellow, I discovered a DNA-based biomarker set to<br />

assess risk of recurrence after primary treatment. My landmark paper in the American Journal of Pathology<br />

set the stage for the use of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) prostate cancer tissue with microarrays<br />

for copy-number assessment. I was the first to demonstrate FFPE prostate biopsy tissue could be profiled on<br />

high-resolution microarrays. As Professor, I work as a translational researcher in prostate cancer, both in solid<br />

tumor and circulating biomarkers. I helped move the circulating tumor cell (CTC) field beyond enumeration<br />

and was the first to genomically profile prostate cancer CTCs. Recently, I have applied similar approaches to<br />

identify clinically relevant bladder cancer biomarkers. My research goal is to identify predictive and prognostic<br />

biomarkers to aid in clinical cancer decision-making.<br />

Walter Research Interests: Dr. Walter is a clinician-researcher who is a national leader in evaluating the<br />

real-world risks and benefits of cancer screening in older patients. Dr. Walter joined the <strong>UCSF</strong> faculty<br />

in July 2001, and she is a geriatrician at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. She has developed novel<br />

methodology demonstrating the fundamental importance of life expectancy rather than age in determining<br />

benefits and risks of screening. Virtually every cancer screening guideline cites her research. In addition,<br />

Dr. Walter led a series of seminal studies demonstrating decisions to screen older adults for cancer are often<br />

dictated more by age than health such that many patients in poor health continue to undergo screening<br />

while many healthy older patients fail to get screened. Also, she discovered that cancer screening frequently<br />

leads to significant harms without benefit in patients in poor health and developed a taxonomy and<br />

VanBrocklin Research Interests: The VanBrocklin laboratory focuses on developing nuclear imaging<br />

agents targeting cell surface proteins (receptors, enzymes and transporters) and signalling pathways and<br />

mechanisms by PET and SPECT imaging. We have developed imaging agents covering a broad range of<br />

molecular motifs from small molecules, antibodies, antibody fragments (e.g., Fabs, scFv, and diabodies),<br />

and aptamers, to proteins and peptides. We synthesize, evaluate and validate tracer mechanisms of<br />

localization and retention at the target site. We utilize in vitro and in vivo model systems to test the probes<br />

and interpret the data collected from these systems to determine their utility for research or as a future<br />

diagnostic. We have successfully translated many of these tracers into humans for drug development or<br />

Daud Research Interests: Our group at <strong>UCSF</strong> is focused on developing new immunotherapy agents and<br />

specifically understanding the biology of the immune response to PD-1 in melanoma. We developed IL-<br />

12 gene therapy in melanoma and carried out the first in human clinical trial in 2005-2007. Based on this<br />

work, IL-12 electroporation is being explored in many cancers as an immune agent and as a combination<br />

treatment with PD-1 and other checkpoint inhibitors in melanoma. I have been involved in the development<br />

of anti-PD-1 antibodies for melanoma. With my colleagues Michael Rosenblum and Max Krummel at<br />

<strong>UCSF</strong>, we have developed a novel assay that profiles the intra-tumoral microenvironment in depth and can<br />

predict non-response to PD-1. We are currently exploring novel strategies for PD-1 non-responsive subsets<br />

Paris Research Interests: My background is in biophysical chemistry. My research focuses on biomarker<br />

discovery. As a <strong>UCSF</strong> Prostate SPORE program Research Fellow, I discovered a DNA-based biomarker set to<br />

assess risk of recurrence after primary treatment. My landmark paper in the American Journal of Pathology<br />

set the stage for the use of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) prostate cancer tissue with microarrays<br />

for copy-number assessment. I was the first to demonstrate FFPE prostate biopsy tissue could be profiled on<br />

high-resolution microarrays. As Professor, I work as a translational researcher in prostate cancer, both in solid<br />

tumor and circulating biomarkers. I helped move the circulating tumor cell (CTC) field beyond enumeration<br />

and was the first to genomically profile prostate cancer CTCs. Recently, I have applied similar approaches to<br />

identify clinically relevant bladder cancer biomarkers. My research goal is to identify predictive and prognostic<br />

biomarkers to aid in clinical cancer decision-making.<br />

Kerlikowske Research Interests: My lab focuses on breast imaging and the epidemiology of invasive breast<br />

cancer, DCIS and breast density, and risk prediction models for invasive breast cancer. We have developed<br />

cohorts of women at risk for invasive breast cancer and DCIS and developed comprehensive databases<br />

Bivona Research Interests: Our team uses the tools of precision medicine to improve the molecular<br />

diagnosis and targeted therapy of patients with solid cancers, including lung cancer. Our program focuses<br />

on identifying and functionally characterizing the molecular drivers of tumor growth in individual patients.<br />

We study patient samples and clinical data to identify novel potential drivers of tumor initiation, progression,<br />

and therapy resistance. We functionally annotate the putative molecular drivers using an integrated approach<br />

of genetic and pharmacologic tools. This precision approach to understanding the molecular pathogenesis<br />

of lung cancer (and other cancers) has led to the discovery of new biomarkers and targets that provide<br />

rationale for novel clinical trials we are launching to improve patient survival.<br />

Goga Research Interests: Tumor cells are driven to proliferate, alter their metabolism, and deregulate<br />

cell death pathways by oncogene over-expression or the loss of tumor-suppressor genes. We seek to<br />

understand how oncogenes alter these pathways using cell-based and transgenic animal models. We are<br />

especially interested in how the prototypical oncogene Myc acts in diverse tumor types, including amongst<br />

the most aggressive breast and liver cancers and lymphomas. Myc has also been postulated to drive a<br />

‘stem cell like’ gene expression pattern which may regulate tumor stem cell function. We seek to elucidate<br />

the genes and pathways that are indispensable for Myc function, and thus uncover potential ‘achilles heels’<br />

of tumor cells. Our ultimate goal is to translate our basic discoveries to novel cancer therapeutics.<br />
