and love charity work and community service so I
am excited to get involved in that way here as well!
Levvy: So what brought you to California?
Kenn: I actually lived in Los Angeles many years ago to go
to college at Otis/Parsons and was in LA for about 7 years
before moving on to NYC and then Boston and finally Kentucky.
I was raised in Mississippi so being back in the south
felt like home and was something I needed at the time. I am
so glad I made that move because I ended up meeting my
wife Bunny Jo who I have been married to for 7 years and
we now have a 5-year-old superstar son named Fynnton
which is literally my greatest accomplishment by far!
Sorry, longwinded I know…but to answer your question, we,
as a family, made the decision to move here to give Fynnton
more opportunity and, really, to have a new adventure. I
love what I do and have clients all over anyway, so bringing
my interior design firm back to California just felt right.
Levvy: OK, so speaking about your design business…what
flavor are you and why are you half naked in these photos?
Kenn: Well, this is Palm Springs isn’t it? I thought that was
the norm! *blush No, seriously, when I work with my clients,
I take design down to its root…to the elemental place HALF PAGE HORIZONTAL AD
where all is exposed. That way, I can create a blank canvas…strip
it down in a way, so as to be free to create with

my clients the perfect harmony for them and the way that
they live in their spaces. So, the photos are my creative
way of expressing that notion. Hoping not to offend but to
inspire folks, Levvy, but thanks for calling me out. Haha
Levvy: It’s what I do. lol Tell me how you work with your
clients.
Kenn: Well, there is a common misconception that using
a designer is cost prohibitive. The reality is that actually
saves money for the client in a lot of ways. Like working
with anyone who has expertise in a field, a designer’s
knowledge and experience cut out a lot of headaches as
well as costly mistakes. The number one comment I get is,
‘I don’t think I could afford to work with you, Kenn.’ That
could not be farther from the truth. My rates are very reasonable
and my goal is to keep within the client’s budget
and give them unparalleled service and unique design that
fits their lives.
Levvy: Well, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders
and certainly, in my research, I have found you to have
a vast knowledge of your craft and the accolades to support
it. I wish you nothing but the best and have a feeling that
you are exactly what we love around here. No holds barred,
fabulous!
Kenn: Thanks my friend. I am thrilled to be here and even
more excited to be working on great projects already and
looking forward to a gorgeous future here in your wonderful

When the locally famous throw a party, it often ends up being outrageously
lavish, and why not? I have attended some of the most stunning
society soirees here in Palm Springs and location, location,
location is everything!
Joelle and Steve Stanbridge know a thing or two about fancy celebrations
and fabulous locations. Their mansion sits right in the heart of the
city and is pretty much top of the top when it comes luxury and design.
A mid-century-modern-style home that is a work of art with magnificent
architecture, huge 14ft high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling operating glass
doors. And if that wasn’t enough, the breathtaking views of the San Jacinto
Mountains and show-stopping interior simply scream Hollywood
Regency to the onlookers.

I mean seriously, the ultra modern multi-million dollar compound has the
“wow” factor. It even has a floor to ceiling walk-in wine fridge- no joke, I
could live in it… Stocked with the finest of fizzy booze!
So, of course, I couldn’t resist an invite, extended only to a select few, to
join Joelle (AKA, Lady Shu-Shu) and Steve, for Sunday shenanigans at
the Stanbridge House of Shu-Shu! The occasion? The classy couple was
throwing a no-expense-spared bash for three birthday boys - Tony Hamilton,
Carlos Munoz and Broadway actor, Eric Paul.
Joelle, dubbed by the Desert, “Queen of the Gays”, threw open the doors
to her sprawling 7,500 square-foot stylish abodes, that, incidentally, I just
featured on the cover of top European glossy - Prestige International
Magazine - Française. Much to the city’s delight!
Fresh faced fashionista, Joelle, greeted her guests clad in a white and
fairy-floss-pink floral patterned chiffon number by Roberto Cavalli, looking
every inch the sexy, high society socialite she has become in the city
of Palm Springs – trendsetting as always.
Partygoers started to arrive around lunchtime and the champagne began to
flow. It was lovely to meet Tony Hamilton’s mom who posed proudly for pics
with her strappingly tall son. And Sotheby’s Realtor Tim McTavish was all
smiles snapped with partner and birthday boy Carlos in the kitchen.
The swish list included the likes of Pjetur Sigurdson and hubby, Skinn
Cosmetics guru Dimitri James, Todd Monaghan, Maureen McGladery,
Kenny Jervis, Sabastian Reich, Gary Alan Rowley, designer
Kenn Gray, Laurie and Larry Weitz, soap star Sean Kanan and wife
Michele, soap star Tristan Rogers and wife Teresa Parkerson-Rogers,
Blake and Tanya Marya, Jeffrey (put that snake away) Simpson, Rob
Gracie, and of course LIVE Magazine publishers Levvy Carriker and
Juli Ragsdale.
The wild celebration ran into the early hours of the morning that eventually
saw skinny-dipping in the pool. I was a good boy though and left at
a decent hour, around 10pm… I had a big event coming up the following
day. I was off to meet the future president of the United States of America
– Hillary Clinton… I cannot be hung-over for Hillary, uh-uh!

With one of the warmest smiles in the Desert,
Aneka Brown has the right touch to welcome you
into her world of design and promotions. She is
the founder of Palm Springs Cultural Art, Food
& Wine Festival. In fact, Aneka has started up
many large scale promotions and events which
highlight the city of Palm Springs encouraging
regional travel. Last year LIVE Magazine from
Palm Springs, distributed to target locations in Los
Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Diego, was proud
to sponsor and encourage visitors from these cities
to attend the first BHMCA Fashion, Music &
Arts Extravaganza. Presented during Black History
Month, it was a showcase of all things African
American in the Desert .
Juli: Aneka, you are well known for inclusiveness
in your fashion designs as well as your jewelry.
Aneka: Yes. At a time when divisiveness is being
preached by presidential candidates, Hollywood
& all around us, I chose to close out Black History
Month by sharing what I love about African
American Culture & being African American with
everyone who attended the first annual Black History
Month Cultural Appreciation Fashion, Music
& Art Extravaganza. I preached inclusiveness by
selecting models of all ethnicities, ages & sizes
to proudly strut the runway adorned in my custom
one of a kind creation, “California AfroChic”
by Aneka Brown Designs. They were all equally
beautiful and a perfect representation of what my
America looks like!
Juli: I admire that! You also had a diverse
mixture of vendors, right?
Aneka: Yes, festival goers were treated to a
wide selection of vendors such as artist Bernard
Hoyes, the delicious wines of Indigene Cellars
in addition to Esterlina and much more. Keisha
D Sings brought down the house with her stellar
set and the day concluded with the debut of
Aneka Brown Designs California AfroChic Collection.

Juli: When did you decide to become a fashion
designer and is there anyone in particular that
inspires you?
Aneka: I’ve always been intrigued by fashion
and dreamed of being a designer. Aneka Brown
Designs made its debut in late August 2015. With
no formal training, all self-taught, I embarked
upon creating my first line of original designs.
Hence the birth of California AfroChic which is a
perfect blend of traditional and very vibrant African
Wax Cloth, Clean California Architectural Lines
and my unique take on classic silhouettes which I’ve modernized. I draw
inspiration from early style icons such as the Flirty Ester Jones, aka the
Real Betty Boop, the classically sexy Dorothy Dandridge whom Marilyn
Monroe often took cues from, the earthy and Smokey Nina Simone, the
chic Diana Ross and ultra glam Jackie O and the provocative Grace
Jones whom Madonna, Lil Kim, Lady Gaga &and Niki Minaj take style
cues from.
Juli: I love how your designs have their own style, yet you stay true to
the iconic use of the African print designs. Can you tell us about the fabric
itself?
Aneka: African wax cloth comes in many prints, colors and from various
regions throughout Africa. The fabrics I use are always purchased
through FairTrade systems and often times benefit schools.
Juli: I love that it benefits education! That is very touching. You have
such a way with the designs in the fabric to ‘lace the human form’ with
colors and patterns that accentuate the body. What approach do you
take when designing a dress for a particular person?
Aneka: When designing I often focus on certain parts of the body that
have architectural lines and play that up. Married with the colors and

patterns of the fabric, each element comes together and the product is a
garment that is flattering to all sizes and skin tones.
Juli: They are just beautiful. And they look so comfortable. You could
wear them every day.
Aneka: Yes! My motto is “Live Every Day of Life Like You’re on A Runway”!
It’s my belief that we are all created equally as beautiful. It’s just up to
each individual to tap into their beauty. As a designer, I make it my mission
to help each client tap into that.
Juli: Helping people tap into their unique beauty is so nurturing Aneka.
How does it feel to you when you spot someone at a gala or party and
they are wearing your line of clothing?
Aneka: I get this really warm and fuzzy feeling of overwhelming pride &
joy.
Juli: Your designs for dresses are pretty widely known. Could you tell us
about your Men’s Collection?
Aneka: After being asked several times when I was going to release
a men’s line. I decided to get my feet wet so to speak and reenvision

classic men’s shirts in a unique and modern way. I embellishing collars,
pockets, hidden button flaps and more with touches of African Wax Fabric
to create a modern take on classically tailored men’s shirts and t- shirts.
Juli: What are your plans with Aneka Brown Designs?

Aneka: Being that this is still so new to me(my company is less than a
year old), I plan on continuing to educate myself on more advanced design/sketch
techniques and to broaden my consumer base. Ultimately I’d
love to participate and bring my fresh take on clothing and models to El
Paseo Fashion Week, LA Fashion Week with the ultimate goal being New
York Fashion! Oh hell, even Paris and Milan Fashion Week....

what would you like to become part of our city?
Aneka: I want Palm Springs to become an International cultural mecca.
To be a little slice of utopia where people of all cultural backgrounds fuse
together to create this unique place. And to not lose our feel for hometown
love and appreciation of thy neighbor.
Juli: Well thank you for all you do to bring entertainment, fashion, and
style to Palm Springs! Tell us what you like best about Palm Springs.
Aneka: I can’t really pinpoint it into just one thing! There are many things
I love from the weather to the eclectic mix of people. There’s no other
place like Palm Springs! We’ve got the glitz and glam of Hollywood, the
Urban grittiness and progressive style of New York, the colorful eclectic
mix of characters like San Francisco, all with the down home small town
feeling of a Berkley or a San Luis Obispo.

SUPPORT AIDS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Historic O’Donnell House Site of Dazzling Independence Day Benefit
AIDS Assistance Program – Food Samaritans (AAP) will host its
spectacular Sixth Annual Independence Day celebration and fundraiser
on Monday, July 4, 2016 at the historic O’Donnell House, perched high
on the mountainside above the Palm Springs Art Museum, at 412 W.
Tahquitz Canyon Way. The event begins at 7:30 pm, and the City of
Palm Springs’ fireworks display will commence at 9:15 pm.
“We are delighted that we will be able to offer our supporters the
opportunity to watch fireworks across the entire valley from the grounds
of the historic O’Donnell House,” said Mark Anton, CEO and Executive
Director of AAP. “This has been a special tradition for AAP and we are
extremely grateful for the generosity of Dr. Tracy Conrad and Dr. Paul
Marut for allowing AAP to hold this fundraiser and fireworks viewing
party from this amazing location.”
Completed in 1925, the O’Donnell House served as the winter home
of oilman Thomas O’Donnell and his wife, Dr. Winnifred Willis Jenny,
a well-known Long Beach osteopath. The two-story Mediterranean
Revival-Monterey residence remained the highest mountainside home
in Palm Springs until the 1960s. It was added to the National Register of
Historic Places in 2011.
Tickets for the Independence Day celebration, which include cocktails,
hors d’oeuvres, and valet parking, are $125 per person and may be
