from the
editor
The sunny May we have just experienced has certainly had
an impact on this month’s content. Are we premature to
be talking about camping, swimwear and beach bag beauty
essentials? In my experience, no! As the weather heated up, I
wanted to make the most of the balmy weather and I hurried
to try and book a quick UK get away, just for one weekend ...
nothing out of the ordinary!
Lesson learnt, there does not seem to be such a thing as
a sporadic, ‘pack a bag’ and go staycay! I tried numerous
glamping locations, forest retreats and an array of those lovely
coastal cottages - they were all full. So, take a look at some of
the amazing places that I found on page 43 and book up a few
summer staycays in advance. Fingers crossed for the sun!
Food
RECIPE OF THE
Strawberry & Cream
Delice with Rhubarb Sorbet
and Macaroon
Ingredients:
For the strawberry and cream delice:
• 500g strawberry purée
• 250g caster sugar
• 13 gelatine leaves
• 900ml double cream
• 250g egg whites
For the macaroons:
• 90g egg whites
• 125g icing sugar
• 125g ground almonds
• Red food dye
• 2 tbsp water
• 110g caster sugar
For the sorbet:
• 500ml rhubarb purée
• 500ml stock syrup
• 50g glucose
Courtesy of the
Suffolk Cook Book
Thanks to The Prince
Albert in Ely for this
delicious summer dessert.
Method:
For the strawberry and cream delice:
1. Boil the strawberry purée with 250g
of caster sugar and nine of the gelatine
leaves, then allow to cool.
2. Lightly whip 500ml of the double
cream, fold this into the strawberry
purée.
3. Lightly whip the egg whites, fold this
into the mix and then allow to set in a
container.
4. Boil the remaining double cream and
add the remaining gelatine leaves, then
allow to cool.
5. Pour the cooled mixture onto the
set strawberry delice. If the mixture is
too warm, it will melt the delice and all
blend together.
6. Allow time to set.
For the macaroons:
1. Make a paste with the icing sugar,
ground almonds and 40g of the egg
whites.
2. Boil the caster sugar, water, and a
few drops of food dye to 115°C.
3. Whip the remaining egg whites and
pour the boiled sugar mixture over,
whilst whisking.
4. Fold egg mix into the almond paste
gently.
5. Pipe mix onto a tray and stand for
20 minutes.
6. Bake for 10-15 minutes on 160°C.
7. Make a basic butter icing and use to
sandwich between two macaroons.
For the rhubarb sorbet:
1. Boil the rhubarb purée, stock syrup
and glucose altogether.
2. Add this mixture to an ice-cream
machine and churn.
3. Place mixture in a freezer to solidify.
Menu Makeover:
Fresh New
Flavours from
Thai Street
Café
Article by Sammi Nice
This month saw a trip to
Newmarket’s talked about Thai to
explore its revamped menu
Having been with the team at Velvet for a few months now, I’ve
heard a lot about the Thai Street Café near the iconic Clock
Tower. Whether they’ve popped in after work for drinks on a
Friday, or grabbed a quick takeaway to see them through a late
night in the office, most of the team have been there. Thai Street
Café also offers catering for a number of different events and
companies, so I was really keen to see what all of the fuss was
about.
When we arrived, we were welcomed by Chris and Michael. We
took a seat and began looking through the menu. I’d actually had
a sneak peek at my desk during the day and I couldn’t believe just
how many dishes they had. As a fan
“There’s
something quite
pleasant about
experiencing
authentic
dishes from the
other side of the
world.”
of Thai food, I was in my element
scanning the long list of dishes.
There’s something quite pleasant
about experiencing authentic
dishes from the other side of the
world. Luckily, I’d brought Becca
who’s a regular, and Pete who’s
fairly clued up when it comes to
international cuisine, thanks to his
extensive worldwide adventures.
Chris and Michael told me how
their experienced chefs use local
and seasonal produce to ensure
the flavours do not disappoint. “We’ve just updated our menu, so
there are lots of new things on there,” Chris told us.
As you will have read in previous months, I’m getting quite used
to these food reviews and have found that letting the staff choose
for us is by far the best way especially as you won’t find some of
these dishes elsewhere as they were coined by co-owner Joseph
Baron and their head Thai chef Sek Pongnop.
Chris and Michael thought it would be best to bring a selection
of their starters and main courses which are new to the menu. I
once again listened to their recommendations and we opted for
the Tempura ‘Morning Glory’, Crispy Chilli Whitebait and the
Viet Frogs Legs. None of us were overly sure about the frogs legs,
but surprisingly, they were really tasty, which once again proved
my point that it’s always good to try something you wouldn’t
usually opt for. Although they looked exactly like frog legs, they
tasted much the same as a succulent piece of chicken! The
Tempura ‘Morning Glory’ was Thai water spinach shoots which
were battered and served with a spicy but creamy sauce. These
were a definite hit with us all, with the sauce being great for those
who like a little bit of a kick. The griddled lemon served with the
whitebait was the perfect addition.
When it came to main courses, we once again let Chris and
Michael take charge of the ordering! We had the Street Café
Surf and Turf, the Vietnamese Pho Soup, Sea Bream Laksaa
and the Street Café Duck Board. It was great to get the chance
to sample a little of all four, as opposed to going through that
‘what to order?’ and ‘wish I’d ordered that!’ drama. The Surf and
Turf was a 6oz piece of Eric Tennant steak which was cooked to
perfection, along with giant king prawns served with egg fried rice,
salad and tiger cry sauce. The Sea Bream Laksaa was very rich
in flavour yet creamy at the same time. The vermicelli noodles
were a great touch and the dish together tasted incredibly fresh.
The Duck Board was also a hit. The rich BBQ sauce and pak choi
made for a sweet tasting dish and the jasmine rice was the perfect
complement.
We’d popped in one evening after work, but I’d certainly be keen
to call in one lunch time for the Thai Street’s ‘express service’.
It promises to get your food to you within 15 minutes, meaning
there’s more than enough time to enjoy one of their dishes in your
lunch hour. The Café also does a takeaway service for those in
even more of a rush. The cocktail list also looked very inviting, so
I’m looking forward to the next evening I can call in for a Cosmo!
Their international wines, premium draught beers, craft ales and
top quality spirits ensure there’s something for everyone.
What made you choose to
come to Suffolk and be a part
of The Chestnut Group?
The Chestnut Group is experiencing a very
exciting time of change. It’s a dynamic
and visionary business that’s shaking up
the hospitality sector in East Anglia. We
tick every box in the industry - we have
restaurants, pubs, brasseries and fine dining
venues. Next for the Group is transforming
our menus across the region - we want to
create food that drops jaws for all the right
reasons.
Do you have a staple dish and
cooking style?
My saying is ‘happy chefs, happy food.’ I like
to make simple food, fun and full of flavour.
If you find fish and chips on our menu, trust
me, it will be the best fish and chips you’ll
ever have!
Can you give us a sneak
preview into the food at The
Northgate?
The Northgate is going to be serving bar
and restaurant food as well as having its
very own Chef’s Table. It’s here where the
magic will happen - it will be a food theatre,
a culinary experience that will tantalise all
your taste buds. We’re also investigating
mixing up the traditional ‘afternoon tea’
menu - watch this space!
We chat to highly acclaimed chef Dan Grigg, ahead of the
launch of The Northgate Hotel in Bury St Edmunds
Dan Grigg has joined the Chestnut Group,
one of the regions most exciting hospitality
employers, as Head Chef for their brand
new boutique hotel and restaurant, The
Northgate, due to open late summer.
Can you tell us a bit about
yourself and some of your
biggest achievements so far?
I started my career in Northumberland as
a waiter at a local pub at 13 years of age.
However I was rubbish at waitering, so I
went straight into the kitchen and haven’t
looked back since. I’ve worked for some
large organisations such as The Hilton as
well as some of best fine dining restaurants
in the country.
As a Sous Chef under Head Chef, Nigel
Mendham at The Samling in the Lake
District, we achieved three rosettes and a
Michelin Star, but I would have to say one
of my biggest achievements was achieving
three Rosettes at the age of just 25,
making me one of the youngest chefs in the
country to do this.
As you’re new to the area,
what do you love about
Suffolk so far?
Suffolk is a beautiful and quaint county and
I just can’t wait to start making my mark on
its food scene! Setting a new benchmark
for hospitality in the region, providing diners
and guests with exceptional food, drinks and
service, we can’t wait for The Northgate’s
official opening at the end of summer.
Discover even more by keeping an eye on
our socials for up-to-date progress towards
when it will be opening its doors.
Food
Summer BBQ Trends
Having had the first obligatory BBQ at the start of May,
it got me thinking about BBQing in general, and about
what’s trending in the category says Amy Heaslip
Holy Smokes!
Charred, crispy textures and ingredients
no longer limited to the world of barbecue
are blackening everything from bread to
vegetables, which may come as good news
to those of you who always seem to leave
things on the BBQ just a little too long!
The current appetite for charcoal can be
explained in the fact that it taps into two
of the current trending tastes – bitterness
and umami, the savoury, earthy flavour
that has been acknowledged as the fifth of
basic taste. That being said, these flavours
will need balancing out, so think carefully
about your marinades.
Hottest dog on the BBQ
Everybody can put a sausage on the grill
and serve it in a bun, but there are ways
to really jazz up your hotdog and impress
your guests! Try ‘bubble-dogs’, the unlikely
combination of gourmet hotdogs and a
glass of Champagne. For inspiration on
how to turn your hotdogs posh, think
about all of the components:
• The sausage itself: where it’s come
from, what meat it is (or isn’t).
• The toppings: get creative - we know
that fried onions go, but what else?!
• The sauce: could it be homemade?
Take an example from Dirty Bones (of
Soho) who have ‘The Asian’ on their menu.
Choose from a pork, beef or veggie dog,
which comes topped with kimchi ketchup,
wasabi mayo, crispy seaweed, pickled sushi
ginger and sesame seeds.
Cuisines
Turkish cuisine (part of the broader
Middle Eastern trend) is on the rise.
Mangal is a Turkish word that refers to the
grill that food is barbecued on and a few
places in London are now bringing this
form of cooking into the limelight. Black
Axe Mangal was born out of the owners’
that will really impress your guests. You
The Courtyard
Elveden Estate, IP24 3TJ
Tel: 01842 898068
estate.shop@elveden.com
We’re talking a new Head
Chef and a new summer
menu with The Courtyard
at Elveden this month
Located in Elveden Estate’s Courtyard,
the restaurant offers a welcoming
atmosphere for relaxed and casual dining.
They’ve got everything covered from
breakfast and lunch to afternoon tea. Their
award-winning food has meant they’ve
held an AA Rosette since 2007 which is
something not to be sniffed at.
They’ve recently introduced Mo Johansen
to the kitchen as their new Head Chef and
we took the opportunity to find out a little
more. “Before I came to Elveden, I was at
The Salthouse in Ipswich. Before that, I
was Head Chef at Culford School. I have
held many positions in my career from
the smallest village pub to a 120 bedroom
hotel and a Michelin star restaurant. I’m
finding my new role here at Elveden both
challenging and inspiring. I have been lucky
to start with a highly qualified and positive
crew. Shortly before I started, Connor
Woodger was promoted to Sous Chef so
it is a brand new start management wise,”
Mo told us.
Since Mo has joined the team, he’s
revamped the menu, saying “I have
changed most of the menu but have been
sure to keep some customer favourites!”
He continued to talk to us about the
inspiration behind some of the new dishes,
which we learn was all about local, fresh
and seasonal produce. We can certainly
see why he’s fitted in so well at Elveden
since they source as much as possible
from their very own estate and farm. From
veggies to meat and even herbs, Elveden
really strive to provide their customers
with produce which is close to home. If it’s
not their own, they try to stay as local as
possible. Their cakes are from Wheaten
Mill and bread from Hyams Bakery.
“My favourite ingredient for this
summer would have to be English
strawberries and asparagus. They’re just
so delicious!” Mo continued. Following
Mo’s recommendation, we sampled the
Above: Goats cheese mousse with pickled vegetables
and baked bread with pepper. Below: Fresh tagliatelle
with roast chicken, asparagus in lemon butter
tagliatelle with local asparagus and roast
chicken. “There are bags of summer in this
dish, and as we roast whole local chickens
we achieve a much better flavour in the
dish,” Mo told us. We also sampled the
goats cheese mousse to start which was a
taste sensation. The candy beetroot was
divine! We finished things off with a panna
cotta - the raspberry sorbet was seriously
so good.
Crisp polenta with pickled peppers, kale, new
potatoes and parmesan
Vanilla panna cotta with raspberry
sorbet, mint, strawberries and granola
“I have changed
most of the menu
but have been
sure to keep
some customer
favourites!”
An Appetite
for Al Fresco
There’s nothing quite like eating outside
now the evenings are lighter and
thankfully warmer. As expected from
a picturesque countryside like ours, we
have some delightful outdoor dining
fresco eateries for you to enjoy breakfast,
lunch or perhaps dinner under the stars.
Weather permitting, of course!
1. DoubleTree by Hilton
The location is also ideal for exploring the
sights of Cambridge before heading back
for a bite to eat whilst catching some
National
Beer Day
9th June
Fancy
A Pint?
It’s not surprising that beer is the world’s most widely
consumed alcoholic drink. The 9th June sees National
Beer Day, so it seemed the obvious choice for this
month’s dedicated drinks page.
Third to the traditional cuppa and of course water, there’s
no denying that beer is insanely popular, especially with
the recent rise of craft beer and home brew. Contributing
over £22billion each year to Britain’s GDP, beers and
pubs are crucial to our nation in economic terms. The
UK’s ‘brewing scene’ is thriving at present and has more
breweries per capita than any other country!
Did you know one job in the brewing industry creates
21 jobs in the rest of the supply chain? These include
agriculture, retail and of course the pub itself!
Suffolk as a county
Did you know one
industry creates 21
jobs in the rest of
the supply chain?
These include
agriculture, retail
and of course the
pub itself!
holds two of the UK’s
largest remaining
brewers, Greene King
and Adnams. Greene
King has been brewing
quality ales in Bury St
Edmunds since 1799.
Adnams, too, has a rich
heritage and has been
brewing beer on its site
in Southwold for over
670 years. Alongside
these, we also have
many smaller breweries
offering a range of craft beers from traditional Bitters to
Milds and more exotic beers. Calvors Brewery is Suffolk’s
newest, established in 2008, and specialises in premium
lagers which are brewed using Suffolk’s finest malt.
Food
mexican
twist
Sammi Nice reviews Burwell’s local which
does ‘pub grub’ a little differently...
Set in the centre of Burwell, the Fox Inn has over 300 years of
history behind it. It’s always been known for doing things a little
differently and that’s certainly not changed. It’s safe to say I was
a little surprised to hear that this review of Burwell’s local pub was
actually a Mexican restaurant!
The Fox’s Mexican restaurant acts as a stark contrast to the
traditional bar next door, but it really works for them. Their hugely
popular Mexican menu was put together by owners Bob and Lou
Taylor. “We chose Mexican food for three reasons really. I had
worked in a Mexican restaurant in the French Alps during the
winter of 1990/91. It was my first ski season and it always stuck with
me. Lou and I had a passion for tequila over the years, toasting our
wedding with it instead of champagne, of course, that has waned a
bit. After looking at our options for food and what others in the area
were doing it seemed a no-brainer. Of course, 11 years ago, whilst
Mexican was popular, there were nowhere near as many established
restaurants as there are now. We go down to London and look at
what other eateries are doing and it has changed so much!” Bob
told us.
Mexican isn’t something I tend to have very often, especially when
eating out. So besides my quick and easy occasional fajitas at home,
I was looking forward to trying it out! Unlike other cuisines, Mexican
doesn’t tend to adopt a seasonal
“The best part
is development
and tasting!
We go down
to London and
are doing.”
menu. Bob said, “We tend to change
our menu every 18 months or so.
We’re often on the look out for new
ideas for specials and new dishes for
the menu. We’re currently working
on a new menu which we’re hoping
to launch at the end of the summer.
My wife and I took the chefs and
their partners down to London a
few weeks ago and tried a couple of
places. It was a great way of getting
some new ideas which are currently
in motion. The best part is development and tasting!”
It was great to learn about some of the inspiration behind their food
and hear about some of the dishes before ordering. The menu is
jam-packed with authentic Mexican dishes and quality local steaks.
We ordered a selection from the menu including the Guacamole
Grande, Tequila Glazed King Prawns and the Machos Nachos. As
a lover of avocado, the Guacamole Grande was a firm favourite.
They’ve ‘pimped up’ the usual guac with red onion, tomato,
coriander and jalapeño and it was incredibly fresh-tasting
Food
Article by Sammi Nice
The tequila king prawns were also an ideal light start to our
Mexican feast.
As all of the dishes are made to order and freshly prepared, it
enables Bob and Lou to give customers exactly what it is they want.
“We adjust the levels of spice as requested which is often additional
work for the kitchen, but luckily I have a well-trained group of
chefs who are all incredibly hardworking. I’m very proud of how
dedicated they are!” I’m not one for insanely spicy food, but I do
like something with a little kick. Following my ‘Velvet Food Review
Rule’, I asked Bob what his favorite was. He said it was the chicken
enchiladas, so I thought we just had to give them a try. Bob said,
“We’ve done our enchiladas the same way for 11 years! The poblano
mole sauce, mature cheddar cheese and chicken with salsa just
works. Also top of the list is the chorizo, mushroom and spinach
Chimichanga, and of course the steaks! We have been doing pulled
pork for a while now, and beef shin.”
The enchiladas certainly didn’t disappoint! These would be ideal for
those who are looking for a true feast. They were very hearty and
rich. We also opted for the Vegetable Medley fajitas which were
full of different veggies and beans. The flavour was spot-on and
the beans made for a really fulfilling alternative to the traditional
chicken. We also sampled the King Prawn Tacos with avocado
and lime. This was a very refreshing dish and the red onion, lime
and avocado complemented each other really well, making it my
favourite out of them all.
Overall, this would be one I’d love to recommend. If you’re looking
to pop in to a welcoming friendly pub but experience something a
little different, then make sure it’s The Fox. Arriba!
In possibly Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, Michael
Pennington, supported by a cast of 14 distinguished actors,
takes on the role of Lear, the ageing tyrant whose actions
lead to disaster. Lear’s decision to divide his kingdom wreaks
havoc on his family, sparks a catastrophic civil war, sends him
mad and destroys everything he values. This production, part
of an extensive national tour, marks the 400th anniversary
of Shakespeare’s death.
Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
The revenant
Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter
Release Date: 6th June
Much of the hype attached to The Revenant was concerned with
the possibility of a long awaited Oscar for Leonardo DiCaprio.
Although DiCaprio is terrific as the grizzled Hugh Glass, the real
star here is often the harsh environment that he is left to fend
for himself in after being left for dead by his travelling party.
The Revenant is a spectacular, unique visual experience, and
certainly a very different animal to director Alejandro G. Inarritu’s
Oscar winning previous flick, Birdman. It does however have its
immersive cinematography in common throughout an epic two
and a half hour runtime.
David Brent: Life on the Road
Directors: Ricky Gervais
Stars: Ricky Gervais, Jo Hartley, Mandeep Dhillon
Release Date: August
Although most of Ricky Gervais’ cinematic output - and indeed
his recent efforts on the smaller screen - have been met with
a decidedly mixed reception, August’s return of his most
popular creation promises to be one of the biggest events in
British cinema this summer. Life on the Road takes Brent away
from ‘The Office’ as he embarks on a career as a rockstar. The
‘mockumentary’ format is not as pioneering as it once was, but
Brent is still one of the finest comic creations of all time, and with
public appetite still strong, Life on the Road promises to be a hit.
Cats Eyes
Anyone familiar with one
half of Cats Eyes, Faris
Badwan’s, better known
project The Horrors,
would assume that
they would incorporate
at least some of the
garage rockers dark,
brooding underbelly.
For this month’s
Treasure House, his
second album alongside
soprano, tenor and
multi-instrumentalist
Rachel Zeffira, Badwan’s
distinctive vocals are
present and correct,
but paired with a
shimmering, upbeat,
pop-flavoured heart.
Lead single Chameleon
Queen is a wistful,
dreamlike and utterly
gorgeous track, with the
rest of the aptly named
Treasure House it is
likely to leave fans of the
alike, spellbound.
Article by Pete Townshend
On the punt for
pipistrelles
We took to the River Cam to learn about a
little-known Cambridge resident
During the day the River Cam is undoubtably ruled by punts, ducks
and the occasional antisocial swan, but as soon as the sun goes
down a different animal takes over this famous waterway.
As the last of the daylight fades, and Cambridge’s iconic skyline is
silhouetted against the twilight sky, a formidable predator begins to
emerge from the countless rafters, towers and trees that line the
riverbanks... the bat.
For centuries, horror stories and folklore have given this fascinating
flying mammal a negative reputation, but Scudamore’s, in
partnership with the Wildlife Trust, have set about changing that
with their Bat Safari Punting trip.
“It’s a great way to inspire people about their local wildlife. Bats can
seem very mysterious, but by linking up with Scudamore’s we’ve
been able to dispel some of the myths” says Brian Eversham, Chief
Executive of the Wildlife Trust BCN.
We set off from Scudamore’s Mill Lane Punting Station just before
dark and headed towards Grantchester armed with special bat
detectors. These contraptions would allow us to hear the otherwise
inaudible sonar that pipistrelle, daubenton’s and various other
resident bat species use to hunt.
The not-so-fine British summer meant there was a bit of a chill
in the air, but a cosy blanket provided by Scudamore’s and an
abundance of interesting facts from our very knowledgable guide,
Heather, soon took our minds off it.
As we drifted along, watching the city fall away ether side of us,
silence fell and all became still, until suddenly our bat detectors
sprang into life with a succession of almost wet-sounding clicks.
We looked up and were treated to an air display that would put the
Red Arrows to shame. These master-hunters darted and swooped
nimbly back and forth, catching unsuspecting insects hovering
above the still water’s surface.
Overall this was a fantastic evening trip exploring a side to
Cambridge that is rarely seen. The guides were excellent and the
bats certainly didn’t disappoint! It’s a big thumbs up from us on a
balmy summer’s evening after an early dinner. And with 50% of
ticket sales going to the Wildlife Trust you’ll also be doing your bit
for local conservation.
The 90-minute trips run from May to September, departing at
various times depending on the sunset. Contact Scudamore’s for
more information and bookings.
Getaways
Article by Gemma Treby
carry on
glamping
With the Met Office urging us to brace ourselves for the hottest summer
in 40 years, we look to what East Anglia has to offer for those sporadic
weekend getaways that require no cannibalisation of your holiday allowance.
Think camping! It’s come a long way from the days when all you needed
was a £50 pop-up tent, a sleeping bag and Calor Gas stove. Glamping has
become an integral part of the boutique staycation getaway, with structures
becoming more imaginative and inventive each year.
Roundhouses
Overlooking the sand dunes at Winterton-on-Sea, a small rural
fishing village in Norfolk, you will find these quirky pastel-coloured
thatched roundhouses. Make time to visit the local pub, Dunes
beach café and take a leisurely stroll along the coast, seal spotting.
The site itself, Hermanus, is set within 40 acres of gardens and
even has an outdoor heated swimming pool which is open for the
warmer months.
Eco-Friendly
At the West Lexham site, set in a protected rural valley, you can
stay in brightly furnished bell tents made from luxury cotton
canvas. The site itself is eco-friendly, with nature thriving in its
fields, floating meadows and ancient trees.
The facilities have every attention to detail with a fire bowl,
woodfired pizza oven, hot showers and vintage flushing loos… so
no more weeing in the bushes!
Gypsy Living
At White House Farm, set in 115 acres of meadows and woodland
unchanged for generations, you can choose to sleep in a cosy
gypsy caravan, with a comfy double bed. By day, experience a
slow pace of life in inspiring surroundings, and by night, enjoy the
delights of a camp fire and displays of stars on clear evenings.
Safari-style Camping
Great for extra-large families, the Zambezi Lodges, with their
substantial living and dining areas, sleep 10 in comfort. Their huge
sun-decks look out over wonderful views of the North Norfolk
Coast. Set within walking distance of the beach, Zambezi Lodges
are the perfect place to escape and inspire adventure.
“Pops has always been a big kid at
by karting in the afternoon at
“As my Dad is a bit of a history
he’d love to discover the history
and stories behind the people who
lived and worked there, as well as
see all of the planes, of course!”
“My Dad’s not the best of cooks,
but he loves his food and learning
new things, so I thought there’s no
better way to celebrate Father’s
looking forward to treating him to a
Independent Ely
A thriving
We meet the people of
Ely to learn about their
independent businesses
Ely is a picturesque, historic city
which is home to one of England’s
most beautiful Cathedrals. The city
has lots to offer and displays a range
of boutique shops, restaurants,
stunning architecture and historic
attractions. It’s easily accessible from
both Cambridge and Newmarket and
boasts many hidden gems.
We spoke to Tracey Harding,Tourism
and Town Centres Manger at East
Cambridgeshire District Council,
who told us, “We have approximately
100 independent businesses in
Ely’s core city centre. Its continued
growth and development over the
last few years has meant that the city
is becoming a very much soughtafter
location to live, work and
spend timen in.”
Tracey continues, “As a city, we
have a delightful mix of independant
shops, cafes and restaurants as well
as regular weekly markets. This year,
we are proud to once again celebrate
Independence Day on Wednesday
6th July where a wide variety of local
businesses will gather on Ely’s Market
Place to show case their products
and services.”
What’s your story?
I was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease,
which has changed my life in every aspect.
The boutique has given me something to focus
and build on.
Why did you locate in Ely?
I moved to Ely three years ago and I just love
it. It’s such a pretty little city and the people
are so friendly and welcoming. I feel Ely is the
perfect location for an independent retailer.
Currently coveting?
Holiday Shoes
Sara Decent from Modish lets
us in on her holiday essentials
YAY! Summer holidays are coming! Although
it’s probably not the first thing on your mind,
it’s not a bad idea to give some thought to
what to put on your feet whilst you’re away.
Obviously much depends on where you’re
off to, be it a flop & drop or perhaps a more
cultured affair.
But whatever your idea of holiday fun, most of
us will need something for walking all day, lounging
around the pool and looking fabulous in the evening.
If you’re going hardcore and sticking to three pairs, the first two
need to go with everything you’re taking, and the last pair must
work with ALL of your dressy outfits.
As for style, heel height and colour, well, despite rumours to the
contrary I am NOT the fashion police: my only advice is go with
what works for you! But in case you’re wondering, these are some
swimwear ever swore they could. I am a beach veteran at heart,
given that from a very young age these surroundings have been
my playground, my classroom, my meeting point, my office, my
midnight escape route… you name it. Therefore, I feel I ought
to shamelessly share all the secrets of the very distinctive beach
etiquette.
Fashion
Do’s
• White t-shirts and cut-off denim shorts will never be
out of date. One Teaspoon denim is my fave and linen
t-shirts from J.Crew
• Smaller bikinis will visually make you look a lot smaller!
Melissa Odabash, Marysia, Lisa Fernandez and Violet
Lake are flattering.
• Hats are de rigeur… Panama, Havana, wide-brim
and messy cowgirl are all allowed and show great
sophistication and brains. Eugenia Kim, Ibo Maraca and
Yosuzi are to die for, although Oliver Bonas’ affordable
version is tops!
Valentino
• Straw beach bags from the local market! Be bold and
personalise yours with bandanas wrapped round the
handles, old trinkets hanging or why not monogram it?
Golden Goose
Deluxe Brand
• Sheer, unique and floaty kaftans all the way. Anything
thicker than chiffon must be left in Norfolk, I’m afraid.
Have a peep at the gorgeous creations by Pampelone
Clothing, SB Butterfly and anything that Lisa Marie
Fernandez creates.
Dont’s
• No matter how good you think you are at applying
fake tan, money does make the difference and Carita
or St Tropez will help.
• Being hip is ok, being safe is ok, being boho is ok,
being gay is ok, being transgender is ok, being straight
is ok… wearing Crocs is really not ok.
• Consuming copious amounts of wine in the sunlight
will kill you or dehydrate you, possibly leaving you to
rot on a rock, and that is not very cool.
• Why midriff? Make that area from under your breast
to your belly button a floaty un-evident flesh line and
ditch the oh-so-very-unforgiving elasticated midriffs
tout de suite.
• Never be seen leaving the beach with damp sarongs
or wet beach towels serving as ponchos or coverage
of any sort… opt instead for a lightweight bomber
jacket. As the night is young and the mojitos delicious,
who knows where you will end up!
Bespoke with
HARRIET KELSALL
Article by Gemma Treby
Velvet visits Harriet Kelsall,
bespoke jewellers in Cambridge
With the rise in the desire of us all to
become more ethically aware, fast,
throwaway fashion is hopefully a thing of
the past for most of us. Now we look for
brands that have a conscience; if they
allow us to personalise our purchase and
make an enjoyable experience out of the
process we would consider all boxes ticked.
Harriet Kelsall is one of the few brands out
there who I believe genuinely does this,
says Gemma Treby
Harriet Kelsall, the jewellery designer
who last year celebrated her 10th year in
Cambridge, recognises that the jewellery
industry has a poor record when it comes
to ethical and environmental issues, and
has worked hard to earn the company its
Fairtrade license and responsible jewellery
certification. Anyone who has watched
the film ‘Blood Diamond’ will understand
the human price that is paid for jewellery
whose origins are not clear and audited.
So with a clear conscience, I met with
senior designer, Tom to understand the
process of creating a bespoke piece of
jewellery. First off, I was shocked that
prices can start from as little as £750.
Clearly un-educated in this area, I’d
presumed that this kind of experience was
reserved for the super wealthy with sixfigure
budgets. “Working to a budget is
Design
“One of my favourite
parts of the job is
handing the piece over
to the client; it’s an
emotional experience
that I am proud to have
shared with them.”
fairly common practice; one of the largest
commissions I have personally taken was
to the tune of £21,000, but I find all my
projects equally exciting and take pride in
every design I create,” enthuses Tom.
I asked Tom how the process starts. “I sit
down with the client; it’s usually a surprise
gift or engagement ring, so it’s vital that I
ask the questions to find out as much as I
can about the recipient. I also like to know
stories; if it’s an engagement ring, where
did the couple meet and what are their
favourite past times, for example. I like the
design to represent a story,” Tom says. I
then look sadly at my own engagement
ring and wonder what its story is, other
than being the nicest looking ring in the
shop some nine years ago! Our need for
sentiment is high, just think of the success
of the retailer Not On The High Street,
whose range centres around the emotional
connection of personalisation.
Once the designer has a keen sense of
something in mind for the client, they
will begin to sketch the design, and often
get it right first time, or, on occasion, go
through several sketches tweaking each
one until perfection is found. “Each design
is unique and will never be repeated; that’s
our promise to our clients,” explains Tom.
“I then liaise with our master goldsmiths
at our Hertfordshire workshop who take
to the bench to bring the story to reality,”
Tom continues. The process takes about
six weeks, but Tom explains that they have
worked to far shorter deadlines when
needs must, and time is not an option!
“One of my favourite parts of my job is
handing the piece over to the client; it’s
an emotional experience that I am proud
to have shared with them,” says Tom. As
an on-looker I was able to see this first
hand, when a lady came into the shop to
collect a necklace she had commissioned.
I noticed she was quite teary and asked to
know the story. “She has had a piece made
using the birthstones of her children,”
explained Tom.
What was your first ever beauty treatment?
I think it honestly was when I was studying at college... probably a manicure. I’ve had
immaculate nails ever since.
How did you get into the beauty industry?
My grandparents went on a cruise for their wedding anniversary, and my nan came
back singing the praises of the spa and salon on board. That was it - from the age of
11, all I wanted was to make other people feel amazing, whilst travelling the world on a
Advice
Q: How long can I keep my
gel polish on for?
“Even if your gel polish is looking
immaculate, you should still have
it removed after two weeks;
it’s fine to then re-apply. The
problem is, most clients will
break the two week rule and the
nails can end up dry. In this case
I would be advising a 4-6 week
break and a conditioning nail oil
used regularly.”
A Scents of Spring
Fragrance
This month, we’re talking unique fragrances and science with Escentric Molecules
Escentric Molecules, launched in 2006, is essentially renowned for ‘celebrating perfumery as the art of chemistry.’ There are three ranges
at present, 01, 02 and 03, all of which are explored in binary pairs. The 02 range, introduced in 2008, contains an array of fresh top notes
which make it a perfect summer fragrance. We were keen to learn a bit more about the science behind it.
When we look at the journey of Escentric Molecules, there’s a lot more to it than just a good ‘scents’ of smell. Modern perfumery began
back in 1868 with the synthesis of the first aroma-molecule. Ever since, Escentric Molecules have embraced the relationship between art
and science and have been experimenting with formulas (Escentric fragrances) and molecules (Molecule fragrances).
Escentric or Molecule?
Escentric fragrances are fundamentally based on an
aroma-molecule which is then combined with other ingredients
which are used to enhance the scent. Molecule fragrances on the
other hand, are much more rebellious and break traditional rules
of perfumery, since they contain no fragrant ingredients besides
the aroma-molecule itself. The molecule fragrances are therefore
simplistic and untouched. Each of the Escentric and Molecule
fragrances are sold separately and suitable for both
men and women. This reinforces the common statement that
each fragrance smells different on different people.
www.escentric.com
Molecule 02 Vs Escentric 02
Molecule 02 uses the single note aroma chemical Ambroxan.
Ambroxan is known for having a slight sensual quality which is
long-lasting and endearing. It contains a chemical structure which
is identical to the ambrox derived from Ambergris. Ambergris has
played a huge part in perfumery, since it was often regarded as
the most prized ingredient having been around for centuries. It’s
rarely found today since most modern fragrances use ‘lab-created
equivalents.’ Escentric Molecules value it for its refinement and
sensuality and perfumer Geza Schoen says “It has a fresh, almost
mineral quality that lingers into the drydown.”
Escentric 02 uses the Ambroxan as a base and Vetiver, Muscone
and Orris Incense to add opposing notes. Geza Schoen desribes
the fragrance as ‘a gin and tonic accord’, ‘with a hint of the
Austrian lemonade called almdudler.’
Escentric 02 EDT and Molecule 02 EDT, both 100ml, £71.50
Available locally from The Spa @ Bedford Lodge, Newmarket and Catesbys, Cambridge.
Men
Pete Townshend gets the 5-Star treatment
at Celik’s Mensroom
My visits to the barber usually consist of a quick haircut out of
necessity rather than pleasure, so when I was invited to
experience the service at Celik’s Mensroom in Newmarket, I was
in for a treat!
“That has always been the biggest challenge in our business, trying
to change men's perception of grooming,” says Bulent, owner of
Celik’s, who was my barber for the afternoon. However, over the
past few years, attitudes have changed considerably and it’s easy
to see why.
My 5-Star Grooming experience began in the usual way: a tidy
up of my messy mop that had been neglected for a little too long,
followed by a closer trim with the electric clippers. It is at this point
that I would usually say thank you and pay the bill, but Bulent had
other ideas.
Out came the facial steamer. “We use this throughout the shave to
keep the foam moist and the skin soft,” he explained, while fitting
a fresh razor to his
cutthroat.
After a layer of skin
softener and then
foam, the close shave began and my initial alarm quickly left me.
With Bulent’s 23 years in the industry and 13 years since Celik’s was
established, it was clear that I was in safe hands.
Once my beard had been shaped with careful precision, a soothing
moisturiser was applied to ready me for the next stage of the
treatment, the facial wax.
The wax is applied to the cheeks, brow and nose and is left to set
while a flaming candle is expertly used to singe away any unwanted
ear hairs. “The wax has two benefits,” says Bulent, “It takes care of
any stray hairs and helps to deal with blackheads.”
Once the wax was removed, a refreshing traditional Turkish
aftershave was applied, then a face and hair wash completed before
a hot towel to soothe and a cold towel to close the pores.
Finally, Bulent used American Crewe Forming Cream to style my
hair and complete the sharp look.
I would be lying if I told you that some aspects of the treatment
were not a little uncomfortable, but this was short-lived and left me
feeling like a new man - fresh-faced and full of beans!
Overall, the 5-Star Grooming treatment gets a big thumbs-up
from us here at Velvet. It’s perfect if you want to look dapper for a
special occasion, but also a great way to take care of yourself on a
regular basis. And, with the Newmarket studio currently expanding,
there’s no better time to visit Celik’s Mensroom.
Health
Written by Sammi Nice
PT, Model and Physique Champion
How do we get a six-pack?
EVERYONE has abdominal muscles, and if
you cannot see them it’s because there is a
layer of fat covering them. You do not need
to train your abdominal muscles to have a
six-pack it’s all done through an effective
nutritional plan.
If you only had time to do three
exercises what would they be?
Seated high incline press with barbell
(aiming to hit the upper chest, shoulder and
triceps muscles), bent over rows (to work
back, bicep and core muscles) and squats
(to work legs and core muscles).
How often do you train?
I like to train for three days then have a rest
day on the fourth which works out six times
every eight days. I feel this works best as
usually by the end of the third day you feel
tired and look forward to your rest on the
fourth. You can also hit an effective threeway
training split which will enable you to
train all muscles twice every eight days with
a rest in between.
What is the one thing that hinders
people hitting their goals?
The number one thing I find that always
hinders people’s results is their nutrition!
Another key factor I always find, is people
who go to gyms, avoid using weights and
stick to cardio machines. If this is you, pick
up the weights and see if you can lift more
than you did the week before, challenge
yourself and enjoy it. Do it correctly and
you will burn A LOT more calories than
running in a straight line staring at the wall
on that treadmill!
Why 108? The number 108 has many important and symbolic meanings in diverse
disciplines ranging from mathematics to religious and spiritual practises, martial
arts and yoga. So 108 resinates well with what we are trying to achieve here at the
Wellbeing Warehouse.
The charity we will be supporting, Hope Foundation, has the goal of protecting the
250,000 children who struggle to survive on the streets of Kolkata. The money we
will raise will help protect these children from abuse, providing education, medical
services and providing them a home.
I am so passionate about connecting my business, and personal practice with the
charity that in July I am looking forward to participating in a larger charity event
along with many other internationally-renowned
instructors.
Or specifically, sour cherry juice. Get your hands on this bad boy superdrink for its
Health
fitness pro
This month,
we caught up with Charlie Wall
from Cambridge Bootcamps
Q: How long have you been running the bootcamps and
what made you get into it?
This is my 8th year running Cambridge Bootcamp. When I first
started running my personal training business I realised that
there must be more ladies and single mums out there who find
exercising difficult. At this point, I had been freelancing around
many of the local gyms. I took everything I loved about the
class structure and thought I would try setting it up outside, so
I could take my then young son with me, and hoped to attract
like-minded women who could also bring their kids with them
if childcare was an issue. I was the first bootcamp in Cambridge
to set up, and have always been a women-only outfit. I was very
lucky to start when I did, and have had a loyal following ever since.
Q: What type of training do you personally do?
I am a member of a local CrossFit Box and I also have one PT
session myself every week which I love. My training mostly
consists of weight training, or high intensity Kettlebell training. I
also absolutely love spinning which is something I really miss about
not being a member of a gym. My friend and I also go to Barry’s
Bootcamp in London when we get a chance.
Q: If you could pick one piece of training equipment
what would it be and why?
It will always be a Kettlebell! I am highly qualified in Kettlebell
coaching. I find them so versatile and really good fun. They’re a
very good tool if you are feeling stressed, due to their explosive
nature!
Q: What’s a typical pre-workout and post-workout
meal for you?
I like to eat as much protein as I can, so post workout I usually
have eggs of some sort with kale. I find that I work out better on
an empty stomach, but it’s about finding what works for you.
Cambridge Bootcamps
Tel: 07545 284928
www.cambridgebootcamps.com
Q: What’s your favourite sportswear brand?
I do have a tendency to buy a lot of sportswear. I really like a
mixture of Nike, Adidas and Lululemon.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
I’m up at 5am to get ready for bootcamp which starts at 6.15am.
I usually have clients post-bootcamp and always try to train at
9.30am if I can. Mostly, after that, I am either seeing clients for
1-1 sessions (I see ladies for personal training or health coaching).
In the afternoon, I may see my Dad who is in a local nursing home,
then cook the dinner for my family, and then I’ll go back out to
teach Bootcamp in the evening. I am home by 7.45pm and will
read, study or chill out. I have to go to bed early due to getting up
so early, so you won’t usually find me still awake past 10pm!
Q: What has been your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement to date has to be bringing up my son
for the last 16 years! I’m very proud of him. Other than that,
it would have to be running a business without any business
knowledge. Achieving my Strong First (highly regarded Kettlebell
certification) qualification was another. It was the hardest thing I
have ever done. This year I started studying again. I am in my first
year of a three year Nutritional Therapy qualification so I will be
mostly studying and focusing on that rather than any
sports-related achievements.
Health
Meet the
Velvet Magazine catches up with Dr Brennan
to understand how she has helped so many
people on their weight-loss journey
What are your principals on diet for
weight loss?
Losing weight is not just about counting
calories, it is as much about what you eat
as well. Cutting down on sugary foods and
refined carbohydrates, as well as keeping
the diet rich in vegetables, salad and good
sources of protein is key.
Tell us something most people don’t
know about losing weight.
Home crash diets: Bad news! Severely
restricting your calories can often lead
to the breakdown of muscle, so although
you may be losing weight, it’s not just fat
you’re losing - you’re losing muscle too.
When you lose muscle you slow down your
metabolism, leading to easy weight gain in
the future.
What do most people miss the most
when they are on a diet?
Alcohol and chocolate! If you are following
a diet at home, don’t deprive yourself of
everything you love, as you will just crave it
more. Substitute that bar of milk chocolate
for a small square of dark chocolate, and
swap your beer and wine for a spirit such as
gin or vodka.
that’s key to weight loss. Think of diet and
exercise like Batman and Robin, where
diet is Batman and Robin is exercise. Robin
certainly helps but it’s really Batman that
saves the day.
Based on your experience and
knowledge, how dangerous is the
threat of obesity to the UK?
We are facing an epidemic in Type 2
Diabetes and unless we tackle the obesity
crisis now, we will be paying the price for
years to come. The UK has the highest level
of obesity in Western Europe and obesity
is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes,
stroke and certain types of cancer. We only
have one body - it’s important to take care
of it by eating well and staying a healthy
weight.
registered doctors at Alevere
Article by Elyssa Fagan
Studio Dance Fitness
Barre
Belles
Elyssa tries out her first
ever barre class
Being the new girl in town, I was eager to try
some fun fitness classes that were nearby
and offered a good workout; truth be told,
I’m a bit out of practice.
When Velvet was invited by Studio Dance
& Fitness owner, Clare Stringer, to its new
studio to try Ballet Barre, I thought: ‘what a
great way to ease me back into exercise’.
The class is new to Studio Dance & Fitness,
who are always offering new, innovative
forms of fitness that ensure a great workout
to clients, in a fun, comfortable and
encouraging environment. Here you’ll find
everything from Pole Fitness, Aerial Hoop,
Anti Gravity Yoga, through to HIIT style
and flexibility classes. Ballet Barre was only
implemented into the schedule a few weeks
prior to my class, so the majority of the
class were first-timers like myself.
No ballet experience is required for this
class, you’re taught simple positions and
moves, but the classes also draw elements
from yoga, dance and Pilates.
Before I turned up I had envisioned a slow
paced, stretching class with some ballet
moves thrown in. I’d been a childhood
ballerina so I thought it would be like riding
a bike – I soon discovered that I’m very out
of practice.
It was a 60-minute session of both slow
and fast exercises to strengthen muscles,
increase stamina, flexibility and strength.
Experienced instructor and former ballerina,
Julia led the class - this week there were so
many of us we stretched across each side of
the barre - synchronising our movements.
Julia led us through working our legs and
then moved onto arm work with weights.
The barre is utilised throughout as a tool for
repetitions of pulsing movements, which
help align and develop your core.
Balance is not normally my forte but I
felt very at home with leg lifts and pliés –
almost as if I was back in ballet class when
I was seven, but with burning 29 year-old
calves. After the barre work, you move
onto core-building floor work, and finally a
stretching session.
It’s a class where you leave hot, and
definitely feel it the next day. It’s intense
but fun, with an encouraging teacher who
makes sure you go at your own pace, and
it’s full of camaraderie in the room; I am
definitely going back for more!
Hang Out
Hanging chairs not only add a bit of
quirkiness to your garden, they’re also
incredibly relaxing. Grab your book or
Add a pop of colour by changing the
wood and metal finishes.
It may be barbecue and garden
party season but there’s no denying
the evenings are still a little on the
chilly side. When it comes to garden
heating, there’s lot to choose from.
Electric heaters are by far the easiest
option. Simply plug it in and you’ve
got near enough instant warmth.
Burning wood in firepits or fire
baskets is another alternative. These
are just like your traditional indoor
open fire. Chimeneas are another
popular option. Originating from
Mexico, these use a smoke stack on
top of the body to generate heat.
Some even have cooking grills to
double up as a BBQ! A metal one will
be more expensive but they’re set
to last.
Jeremy Medley from Infusions4Chefs told us,
“Juicing is becoming part of our daily routine and
there are several juicers on the market.
The real question, is pulp in or out? Some machines
blend all the matter to create a thicker, more
smoothie like texture.
Then there is the centrifuge juicer that leaves you
with just the crisp clean liquid retained in the fruit
and vegetables, whilst ejecting the fibres out. The
bigger the motor the better the function.
Look how it comes apart, as cleaning is very
important, and dishwasher safe makes this
even easier.”
Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, 2nd June 1953
A ROYAL
CELEBRATION
We caught up with David Walters Fabrics
this month ahead of the Queen’s official
90th birthday on 11th June
Founded back in 1720 by Joseph Walters,
David Walters Fabrics began weaving silk
fabrics in Spitalfields, London. Several years
later, his son helped expand the business
and they continued to weave exceptional
fabrics. Stephen Walters continued the
success, but began weaving fine umbrella
and parasol silks here in Suffolk. Suffolk was
a good choice at the time as there were
many skilled weavers in the region from the
declining wool industry. Stephen expanded
his trade across East Anglia with the help of
his son, Alfred, and built mills in Haverhill
in 1828, and Sudbury in 1860. In 1900,
the whole weaving operation relocated to
Sudbury, where they remain today.
So what is their connection with HRH
Queen Elizabeth? Brothers Peter and John
Walters led several prominent commissions
including the robe and coach for the
Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
This was a memorable time for both the
business and for the monarchy, which David
Walters Fabrics was fortunate to be part of.
Peter’s son, David Walters, moved things
forward further when he started to develop
fabrics for home furnishings and dress
fabrics for specific occasions. Other
achievements included the gown for the
Investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of
Wales in 1969, Princess Anne’s wedding
dress in 1973, and Lady Diana Spencer’s
wedding dress in 1981.
“At David Walters Fabrics we have worked
closely with designers on a number of
fabrics that, at the time, we weren’t aware
of their royal appointment. One of the
projects I recall was for the lining for the
new State Coach which we started work on
in 2004. We were provided with images of
thistles, daffodils and other British National
emblems by the creator of the Coach, Jim
Frecklington. The finished fabric was woven
in 2005, but it wasn’t until 2014 that the
Coach was completed and presented to
Her Majesty for a belated Diamond Jubilee.
It is always an honour and a pleasure to
work on such prestigious projects.” Richard
Norris, Sales and Design Manager told us.
Interior designer,
Sara Slade, talks black
Black is pretty much a staple colour in
everyone’s wardrobe, it is a basic that
always looks smart and is completely
timeless. When using it in your home, it
can be used as a statement against a white
wall or can make the prettiest of pastels
seem more grown up.
Gone are the chromes and stainless steel
of the past, we are now seeing a huge
trend for black in furnishings – you can
even have your bathroom taps in black.
The Watermark Collection do a fantastic
range of contemporary taps and their
Brooklyn range is quite beautiful, especially
if you lean towards a more industrial feel,
their Charcoal basin taps are £1036.80
(www.thewatermarkcollection.eu).
If you are on a budget and want a
statement piece for your bedroom, then
look no further than high street retailer
Next. Their Irvine bedframe harks back
to the a simpler style and is a bargain at
£225.00 for a King Size bed
(www.next.co.uk).
If you are after something a little more craft-led then the knotted
In my opinion, the best company to go to for this look would be
design powerhouse Gubi. They are the masters at keeping their
contemporary designs elegantly finished with their black frames
and bases – they are most certainly worth the investment!
Just always be careful when using black to keep the proportions of
the colour to a low or high percentage - so think 20% black and
the rest lighter, or vice versa. This way you will not venture into
the realms of your home looking like a dungeon!
Sneak peek
Sammi Nice meets Camilla Kiddie,
interior designer at Susie Watson
Designs in her Linton home
I don’t know about you, but when it comes
to interior designers, I always wonder
what their own homes are like. Since soft
furnishings and fabrics is what they live and
breathe you can only imagine their own
homes must be quite spectacular. What
better way to find out that to actually visit
for ourselves.
We were fortunate enough to be invited
into Camilla’s home this month to learn
more about the inspiration behind her
interior choices (and meet her cute little
bunny Pepper!). Camilla is the interior
designer at the award-winning Susie
Watson Designs and has been creating
beautiful interiors for over eight years.
What were your main inspirations
behind the design of your home?
To create a beautiful but functional home,
with an eclectic mix of furniture, fabrics and
accessories – I buy things that I love, that
are well-made and timeless, that I know I
will treasure forever. I have a real passion for
colour, so my home features a lot of bold
colour and patterns.
What interior styles or trends are
you most into at the moment?
I tend not to follow the latest interior
trends too closely as I think it’s important
to be sympathetic to a house and decorate
it according to its age and style. It’s a
case of picking out elements of the latest
trends that work with your look. There is a
strong trend at the moment surrounding
artisan products and buying hand-crafted
pieces direct from designers. Supporting
independent businesses is something that I
feel really strongly about and is a great way
to make your home unique.
One of the reasons I love working with
our Susie Watson products is that the
fabrics and ceramics are all hand-crafted.
Coming from a textiles background, it’s so
wonderful to be working with traditionally
screen-printed fabrics, it gives a quality to
soft furnishings that can’t be achieved with
mass-produced products. Silk is going to be
big for us at Susie Watson moving into the
autumn. We’ve got a beautiful new range of
dupion silks about to be launched which will
be fabulous.
“I like to mix textures and
colours, layering velvets with
printed linens and silks.”
When designing a home, do you tend
to keep the same theme running
throughout?
My style is similar throughout. I like to
mix textures and colours, layering velvets
with printed linens and silks. I tend to have
different colour themes in each room,
which have often been based around a
favourite cushion or a piece of furniture.
I like dark, strong colours in rooms that are
mostly used in the evenings like the dining
room and snug. Whilst fresh, soft colours
are utilised in the kitchen and living room
areas. If I am working on a small property
or something open plan, I tend to try and
keep the colour palette flowing throughout,
playing with tonal variation and accent
colours. The great thing about the Susie
Watson colour palette is that it has been
designed so that all the colours sit together
beautifully. Fabrics, accessories, furniture
and ceramics can be mixed together in
What is your most treasured
interior piece?
I couldn’t pick just one but it would be all of
the pieces of furniture that I have found in
various states of disrepair in junk shops over
the years. I always love something so much
more when I’ve spent a lot of time
restoring it.
What is the most interesting or
quirkiest project you’ve worked on?
Every project I do is interesting in different
ways. The joy of doing this job is that no two
properties, clients or briefs will ever be the
same. I’ve worked on everything from largescale
commercial projects to tiny holiday
cottages by the sea, each has its challenges!
Outside
Time to chill
and grill
Ditch your gas BBQ,
outdoor cooking has
become so much more
interesting
The UK is Europe’s biggest BBQ lover;
last year as a nation we hosted 125 million
BBQs! This trend has of course ignited our
desire to extend our BBQ cooking skills
and be a little bit more adventurous when
it comes to outdoor cooking.
Trend forecasters believe we will be
spending even more time in our garden
this summer with the warm weather
predicted. Just when we had got used to
the office ‘Bake Off’ and a friendly ‘Come
Dine With Me’ style night out, this year
we will be impressing our friends with a
competitive al fresco cook off. Burgers
just wont do, make room for smoked beef
brisket, wood-fired pizza and low and slow
pulled pork! Here are the tools you need
to do the job!
1. The Fire Pit 2. The Smoker
The fire pit answers our need for a sociable
cooking experience. Its dual purpose will
not only keep you warm, but also act as a
BBQ. Although you can cook most things
on a fire pit, make it simple and keep the
social atmosphere by cooking up some
sausages and turning them into posh dogs
with inventive sauces and buns. Firepits are
also ideal for marshmallows and smores!
Impress guests with the ancient and
delicious art of outdoor smoked food.
Smoking enhances and deepens the flavor
of your food, and gives meat a tender
texture and smoky taste. The magical
combination of salt and smoke can
transform uninspiring cuts of meat into
mouth-watering delicacies that will win any
cook-off you are challenged to!
3. The Big Green Egg
This new kid on the block is causing a real
stir in the culinary world. The Egg can be
used for roasting, searing, ‘low & slow’,
barbeques and even as the perfect pizza
oven. It’s quite pricey so make sure you
have a demonstration to decide if the Egg
is for you, and if so, which size is right.
The smart
fortwo
cabrio
review
With the weather we had last month, there
was no better time to get behind the wheel
of the new cabrio from smart, and with a
trip to Cambridge in mind, this was the
perfect little city nipper for the job.
The new smart fortwo cabrio takes the
now almost iconic shape of the original
Mk1 smart, which was released way back in
1998. That’s a scary 18 years ago, and the
even scarier thing is that I’m old enough
to remember the buzz surrounding it back
then! Some of the original left hand drive
models made it into the UK market, from
smart’s first European production run
of a mere 7,500 cars. And in case you
wondered, the compact parking craze of
vertical parking started here!
So how do you know when a car has truly
made it as an icon and left its mark on
history, matching the likes of the original
Mini or VW Beetle? Well probably when it’s
been installed permanently in the New York
Museum of Modern Art. So yes, next time
you pop over to the Big Apple it’s worth a
visit, and alongside the smart you can see
Picasso, Warhol and Dali’s work. That’s not
bad company for the brains behind the car,
Mercedes-Benz and Swatch.
Anyway, back to our trip to Cambridge and
firstly, let’s get roofless. After pressing a
switch next to the gear lever or from the
keys, it takes 12 seconds for the English sun
(today only) to find its way in. And if it’s not
quite warm enough to have the full roof off,
which let’s be honest is most of the time
in the UK, one or two pushes gives you a
couple of options for how open you want
the cockpit. So windows down and roof
back, and it’s a true convertible feel.
Around Cambridge city centre the 90bhp
engine gives enough zip to get you through
the traffic. Couple this with the light and
nimble steering and it’s the perfect little
city get around, achieving up to 60mpg!
smart believe 95% of the car’s life is spent
in and around towns and city centres. For
two adults and a good shopping spree the
smart fortwo cabrio is more than adequate:
the cabin feels extremely roomy with the
long dashboard adding to the feeling of
space, and your new purchases or a spot of
food shopping will fit in the back without a
problem.
In terms of equipment, the smart fortwo
cabrio comes with Bluetooth, Aux and
USB connections; multifunction steering
wheel; climate control; 15in Alloys; electric
windows; and LED daytime running lights
as standard, so the need for extras is limited
in my opinion - apart from the 7.0in media
system.
So why a smart fortwo cabrio? For me it’s
the level of personalisation that is possible.
You can make the car into your own little
creation, giving it its own personality.
Finally, on top of all this, it’s extremely easy
to park which always goes down well with
the lady drivers out there!
Watch this
f-pace
Jaguar fans listen up!
Article by Sammi Nice
Things have just got a little heated in the
world of SUVs, thanks to the new Jaguar
F-PACE, which is described by Jaguar as
having ‘DNA of a sports car’. Inspired by the
F-TYPE, this model has reinvented energy,
strength and purity. It combines exhilaration
with efficiency to offer you to drive of your
life. State-of-the-art technology isn’t the
only thing it’s mastered. It also promises
extremely agile handling, sensational
design both inside and out, impressive
boot space and all-round practicality. The
sheer power of it’s engine combined with
Jaguar’s lightweight aluminium body makes
for a comfortable yet thrilling drive as well
as offering outstanding fuel economy. We
can’t help but feel a little gutted we weren’t
at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai for the launch
last month!
Whether you opt for the rear wheel or
all-wheel drive, the 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder
turbocharged engine comes from their
Ingenium range. If you’ve not already
heard, Ingenium is Jaguar Land Rover’s new
breed of engine which has been designed
for efficiency and effortless performance.
Ingenium is to thank for the low CO2
emissions and fuel economy. It’s also 20kg
lighter than their previous engines. Also say
hello to Jaguar’s Activity Key. It’s a wearable
accessory that also operates as a key fob.
You can now lock your keys inside and
wear the Activity Key wristband, meaning
there’s no need to carry their conventional
key fob. The wristband is lightweight, fully
waterproof.
For our local Jaguar fans, you’ll also be
pleased to hear that Marshall Jaguar and
Land Rover have announced plans for a
new £6m state-of-the-art showroom to
open in Cambridge later this year. Marshall
Jaguar and Land Rover – currently both
based in the original Land Rover dealership
– will now bring both brands under one
roof permanently as part of the showroom
redevelopments, showcasing the latest
Jaguar products alongside Land Rover’s
range.
Alan Finnie, Head of Business at Marshall
Jaguar and Land Rover Cambridge said:
“We really do have exciting times ahead of
us with the opening of the new dealership
later this year. So many incredible Jaguar
Land Rover products have recently
launched, including the Jaguar F-Pace and
Range Rover Evoque Convertible, and
we can’t wait to have an amazing space to
display them all. We’re all looking forward to
not only welcoming our existing customers
to the state-of-the-art building, but new
Marshall Cambridge customers, too.”
