Civil War Re-Enactment at
Oak Grove, Millis, June 18-19
Event Open to All, Presented by the
Millis Historical Commission
By J.D. O’Gara
Travel back about a hundred
and fifty years in time
on June 18 and 19, when the
War Between the States will
be resurrected at Oak Grove
Farm, at 410 Exchange Street,
in Millis. The event will feature
battles, horses, regiments,
demonstrations and period
costume, with featured events
and an opportunity for visitors
to visit a Civil War-era camp.
“We’re excited to have the
Civil War back after 10 years,”
says Nathan Maltinsky, chair
of the Millis Historical Commission.
He expects about
300-400 participants, re-enactors
representing various regiments
from the time. “There
are some real history buffs, and
a lot of teachers will bring a
bunch of students from their
classes,” he says. “We do it to
keep history alive.”
“It’s a great living history
experience for students,” says
They are all just in 8th grade,
but each one of them has been
touched personally by cancer in
their families. Two teams of Millis
teens will be among 23 teams
(as of mid-May) who will participate
in the 3MN Relay for Life
(Relay for Life of Millis, Medway,
will take place at Medway Middle
until 6 a.m. on Saturday, June
this nationwide American Cancer
Society event since they were
little. It’s a personal endeavor.
“My Mom had cancer – that’s
kind of how I got started. My
friend Janet, who passed away,
she kind of got us into it,” says
Valerie Black, whose mother,
Rebecca, is a survivor of breast
cancer. Back when she started
participating in the Relay for
Life, in which a team member
walks on the track all night long,
to symbolize that cancer never
sleeps, Valerie was in Happy
Hours Preschool at the Millis
Church of Christ.
Black and her friend and
teammate, Lauren Lopez, who
lost her Mom to cancer, recently
spent some of their Saturdays in
April raising money outside Star
Market/Shaws in Medway, selling
cookies they baked, for the
cause.
“My family has always been
like really touched by cancer, it
kind of runs in my family,” says
Lopez, who is walking the Relay
for the first time this year. “All
Commission. The event is
open to the public from 9 a.m. –
dusk. Admission is $5 per person,
with a cap of $20 per family and
free for children five and under.
All proceeds support the event
and historical project around
town. Dogs are asked to remain
at home, as they don’t always
mix well with cannon and gun
fire – or with skittish horses on
the field.
“On Saturday there will be
a fashion show, demonstrations
of artillery, cavalry, infantry –
the battle will be at 2 p.m. and
probably wind down by 3, and
everyone heads back to camp
after that,” says Slayton. In addition
to a meet and greet, there
will be a blacksmith onsite, a
Slayton. Slayton personally belongs
They will be camping out and
playing music.
“One of the years we had the
Slayton. “It was a jam session.
The spectators loved it.”
Visitors will also be treated
to a spectacular cannon blast at
dusk on Saturday.
“These are all authentic Civil
War era cannons that have been
restored, owned by reenactment
groups,” says Slayton, who says
before they are fired, demonstrators
will explain their operation.
“(The cannons) are safety
checked by Massachusetts law,”
he adds. “Reenactors belong to
regiments throughout the region
actually served in the Civil War,
since 1987, he has been
to Oak Grove reenactments in
the past. He says he does it for
“a love of history and a love of
horses.”
“I met a group at a parade,
and it was a nice blend,” says
Brundidge. “I had always loved
history, and always had horses,
and the 1st Massachusetts was
doing the Hanson Memorial
Day Parade. And I ran to them
like a kid in a candy shop,” he
says. “I’ve been reenacting pretty
much ever since.”
Brundidge says he does this
about once a month. “We not
only go all around New England,
but also Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Virginia – to do events down
there as well, because that’s
where the battles took place.”
Brundidge says he enjoys coming
grandma got it, my aunt’s husband
got it.” Joining a team for
Relay for Life makes Lauren feel
“like I’m kind of like helping out
my family that’s had it. I’m kind
of making them proud that I’m
standing up (against) the illness.”
Ryan Mullen and a few of his
friends, part of the Holy Walkamole
team, raised money by
selling luminaria bags, paper
bags that are decorated in honor
of someone lost that are lit during
a special lap at the Relay. He
and his brother, Jack, as well as
their friend, Mia Coutz, have
also been participating since the
church preschool.
“It used to be we’d do it
through a church team,” says
Coutz, who has, several times,
chopped off lengths of her hair
to make wigs for cancer patients.
“It used to be a lot about
the adults, but as I brought my
friends in, we’ve become more
involved in fundraising, and it’s
more a kid thing.”
“I think it’s really great that
we can all come together as a
community and help try and
prevent this horrible thing,” says
Jack Mullen, 14. He describes
the Relay as a fun event, with
music all night long.
To her, participating in the
Relay for Life, says Abby Messias,
who has spent time for her
Relay team canning outside
Roche Bros., “shows the people
who go through what they do
that we’re here for them, and we
care about them.”
Each Relay For Life includes
specific features unique to the
the event. After an opening ceremony,
every Relay features a
Survivors Lap. Anyone who has
battled cancer is invited to take
part in this lap, and they are
cheered on by family and friends
on the sidelines. The 3MN Relay
will celebrate with its Survivor
Lap and its Caregiver Lap at 7
p.m. At Relay, there is always a
recognition of the support of
family members touched by their
loved one’s illness.
The Luminaria Ceremony
takes place at 9 p.m., remembering
loved ones lost to cancer. Luminaria
bags are lit, and walkers
quietly honor those whom cancer
took during this solemn lap.
The Luminaria Ceremony,
These teens have fought against cancer since before they could read by
fundraising for the 3MN Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.
Each has been personally affected by cancer. This year’s event will take
place at Medway Middle School on June 10-11.
says Jack Mullen, “is so beautiful.
It’s really nice that we get to
do that.”
The event continues with fun
laps and fundraisers the whole
night through.
“Every hour, there’s a special
lap of some kind,” says Rebecca
Black, who notes that “Miss
Relay,” in which teenage boys
have fun in drag, is always popular.
This year’s Relay theme is
“All around the World.”
At 5:30 a.m. the closing ceremony
takes place, with a look
back at what participants have
accomplished and a renewed
vow to continue the fight.
Registration for the 3MN
Relay for Life is still open. Those
who have survived cancer can
also register to participate in the
survivor lap, and they are not
required to be part of a team.
Municipal Employees Look at Eco-Friendly Measures
to Reduce Water Pollution
On May 18, 2016, over 20
municipal employees and conservation
commission members
from 10 towns throughout the
Charles River Watershed including
Bellingham, Brookline,
Dover, Franklin, Medfield, Medway,
Millis, Needham, Walpole
and Westwood, attended a training
focused on reducing phosphorus
pollution in the Charles
River and achieving compliance
with forthcoming stormwater
permits. The workshop, at Millis
Public Library, put on by
Charles River Watershed Association
(CRWA), will help towns
reduce nutrient pollution from
entering the Charles River in
stormwater runoff.
In urban and suburban
communities throughout Massachusetts,
rainwater picks up
phosphorus and other pollutants
as it flows across asphalt
and impervious surfaces, carrying
these pollutants into the
Charles River. High concentrations
of phosphorus – a nutrient
present in car exhaust, fertilizer
and soil – degrades the Charles
River ecosystem by fueling the
overgrowth of invasive plants
and cyanobacteria. In an overgrown
habitat, fish and other
aquatic wildlife struggle for the
oxygen and sunlight they need
to survive. Cyanobacteria produce
toxins that are harmful to
both humans and animals. Studies
conducted by CRWA and the
Department of Environmental
Protection indicate that concentrations
of phosphorus in the
Charles River are twice what
should be there in a healthy
river.
The stormwater management
workshop, held at the
Millis Public Library, empowers
participating representatives
from cities and towns throughout
the Charles River Watershed.
Experts presented on a broad
spectrum of measures to reduce
phosphorus pollution through
the thoughtful use of blue-green
infrastructure, planning, zoning
and regulatory changes, partnerships,
innovative funding
mechanisms and more. Municipal
employees shared experiences
in reducing stormwater
pollution and lessons learned.
Presenters included Julie Wood
and Pallavi Mande of CRWA,
Nigel Pickering of Horsley Witten,
Brutus Cantoreggi of the
Town of Franklin, Sam Cleaves
of the Metropolitan Area Planning
Council, and John Woodsmall
of the Town of Holden.
This training is part of a
series funded by a grant from
the Foundation for MetroWest
designed to assist local communities
with land and water management
options that benefit the
environment, economy, and improve
community quality of life.
The U.S. EPA recently issued
a new Small Municipal
Separate Storm Sewer Systems
(MS4) permit regulating the
stormwater systems of municipalities
in Massachusetts. Under
the permit, Charles River watershed
cities and towns will be required
to create and implement
a plan to reduce phosphorous
pollution to the Charles River.
CRWA’s stormwater management
workshops are designed to
inform town employees about
the requirements and to discuss
the implementation of impactful
and cost-effective solutions.
Do You Know about Vaping or Dabs? Bet Your 12-Year-Old Does
Educate Yourself about Substance Abuse at the MCASE Forum on June 6
A new Millis task force of
community members, town
safety officials and educators,
called the Millis Community for
Awareness & Substance Education
(MCASE), recently held an
informational night at the Millis
Middle/High School for parents
and loved ones of high schoolage
students aimed at informing
them about substances to which
their children might be exposed.
While the May 11 PREP (Prevention,
Resources and Education
Program), presented by Traci
Wojciechowski, a Prevention
Specialist” from Caron Student
Assistance Program saw fewer
than 20 participants, MCASE
hopes to draw a bigger audience
to a repeat of the program at the
Millis Public Library, 961 Main
Street, Millis, on the evening of
June 6. Traci educated the audience
of teachers and parents
about current facts around substance
use among teens in the
country and provided guidance
and strategies for being proactive.
Complimentary
Caron PREP Program
Message: Parents have
the Power
What parent has not had
an occasion to worry about a
child when it comes to use of
tobacco, alcohol, or drugs? As
times change, so do the drugs of
choice, but teenagers continue to
experiment. Awareness and education
help reduce the incidence
of substance abuse and addiction.
The facts presented from national
surveys show that teens
report using substances for relaxation
and pleasure; for socialization
and avoidance of emotional
pain; to forget about problems;
to satisfy curiosity and to avoid
alienation; and to cope with failure
or rebel. The teenage brain is
wired for risk-taking and immediate
gratification, and emotions
are stronger than logical thinking.
In teens, addictions occur
faster, longer, and stronger.
An important fact for both
parents and educators, is the effect
of substance use on the brain
development of teens. The teenage
brain is especially vulnerable
to drug use. The Caron program
points out that 95% of people
who are dependent started before
they were 20. The National
Institute on Drug Abuse notes
that heavy marijuana use is
linked to educational and lifetime
outcomes such as lower grades
and exam scores. Heavy users
are also less likely to enroll in college,
less likely to graduate from
HS or college, and they are more
likely to earn a lower income, be
unemployed and be less satisfied
Whether you are considering purchasing a second property, are in the process of purchasing, already own a
second property, or want to learn how to incorporate as part of your estate plan, this complimentary
workshop will provide you with valuable information on planning, purchasing, protecting, and preserving
this major asset.
Traci cautioned parents to
remember that caffeine is a
stimulant drug and can also be
addicting for teens and impact
brain development. Particularly
popular among teens are energy
drinks, which studies have
linked to higher abuse of other
substances. She also discussed a
recent concern, even among elementary
aged children, about
the growing popularity of ecigarettes,
personal vaporizers, or
electronic nicotine delivery systems.
According to the National
Institute on Drug Abuse, “only
14.2% of 12th graders view
ecigarette use as harmful, which
is less than 5 students in the average
class.”
Regardless of other influences
in a child’s life, parents
are the primary influence when
it comes to the choices children
make. The program states,
“Consistent message of parental
Have a Waterful Time at the
disapproval of substance use are
strongly linked to lower rates of
children’s substance use.” Talking
early and often with children
about tobacco, alcohol, and drug
use is important. Providing facts,
stating disapproval, standing firm
in sending a no-use message, and
taking advantage of teachable
moments are all steps parents can
take. Parents should get involved
in their children’s lives, know
their friends, be accessible, nurture
their relationship and accentuate
the positive assets of their
children. Eating meals together
was discussed as one of the most
powerful ways to stay connected.
Children need to know that parents
will support them and expect
them to resist peer pressure
and engage in positive behavior.
If you missed this presentation,
the program will be
repeated at the Millis Public Library
on the evening of June 6.
Program will also be engaging
middle school students in
BRAIN DRAIN: Adolescents
and Addiction: Why the teenage
brain is vulnerable.
Students will learn about parts
of the brain and how it develops,
how drugs impact brain development,
as well as the academic
and athletic impact of substance
use. For more information, see
Kids Learn Socialsklz:-) in Medway Community Ed Program
By J.D. O’Gara
In an age where texting and
screen time prevail, Medway
kids are some of the first young
people to learn the art of social
grace, face-to-face. Last month,
Medway Community Education
partnered with Century Health
Systems to offer “Socialsklz:-),”
an after class aimed at teaching
elementary to middle-schoolaged
children the value of a
good handshake, eye contact and
healthy social interaction.
Juanita Allen Kingsley has
been teaching classes for about 13
years, beginning as a wilderness
EMT trainer, but branching out
with Life Skills courses for Century
Health Systems. She explains
how the Socialsklz:-) came about.
“In 12 or 13 years I’ve been
doing this, I’ve seen a huge shift
in the comfort young people have
in face-to-face conversations and
being in a new environment or
being comfortable with adults
they haven’t met before,” says
Allen Kingsley, who, as a child,
learned much of these social
skills having a parent who was a
While You’re Away Cat Sitting, LLC
a new class offered by Medway Community Education.
diplomat. She looks at the growing
amount of screen time as
the culprit keeping young people
from interacting. “It doesn’t matter
how good an athlete you are,
if you can’t hold a conversation
with parents, with future employers
and with teachers, you’re not
giving yourself the best chance
that you can,” she says. “Practicing
these skills is just like practicing
everything else.”
As a child, says Allen Kingsley,
each night her family would have
dinner with guests, and “what we
got out of that was the confidence
to be able to interact with anybody
at any time.”
Her course, she says, “amplifies
and reinforces what parents
have the time to (teach)” their
children. “We send our children
to ballet lessons, soccer camp, violin
lessons, but we leave behind
the opportunity to practice and
learn good habits like these social
skills.”
Gift
Stylishly
“I’ve actually never done anything
like it before, but it was really
fun and it taught me a lot
about different social skills,” says
Elizabeth Kenney, 10. What impressed
her most, she says, was
learning just how hard it is to
make a good first impression, and
she thinks she will have lots of opportunity
to practice good table
manners.
“My parents taught me a lot
of it, but it was a good refresher,”
says Elizabeth. “and I had never
learned about the good first impression
thing.”
“I asked kids to tell me one
thing they came away from the
class with, and two or three of the
girls said, ‘I know how to look in
someone’s eyes now and talk and
put my shoulders back,’” says
Allen Kingsley, who points out
that when people are intimidated
by social interaction, they’re not
going to give “off the aura of confidence
and competence – they’re
going to vanish as soon as they
walk in.”
The Socialsklz:-) class then,
makes conversation more familiar
and less formidable. In the
fall, it will likely be offered to all
20 communities with which Century
Health Systems works.
“In a couple of hours, there’s a
layer of awkwardness that’s been
shed,” says Allen Kingsley, “and
isn’t that a nice time in your life
you can feel more confident.”
Socialsklz:-) is just one of the
many enrichment programs
Medway & Franklin American Legion Posts Host
Scholarship Run June 25th
By J.D. O’Gara
The Third Annual American
Legion Scholarship Fund
5 Mile and 5K Road Race will
take place on Saturday, June 25,
starting at 8 a.m., with the start
and finish in the Medway High
School parking lot behind 88
Summer Street in Medway. Registration
is $25 online, $15 for
students, or an additional $5 on
the day of the race. Register at
active.com or through the link
at MApost75.com. All entrants
will automatically be entered in
The American Legion Posts
75 and 367 Scholarship Run
will benefit local students with a
$500 scholarship each to one student
from Medway High School,
one from Franklin High School
and another from Tri-County
Regional Technical Vocational
High School.
The Legion race is in its third
year running, says Douglas Wahl,
of Medway’s Post 367.
“I had an idea of trying it,”
says Wahl. “People think of the
American Legion and they think
of a bunch of old guys and an
old watering hole. Why not try
something like this that would
bring families in?” Wahl says that
the idea caught on, with Kim
Leone, Adjutant of Franklin’s
Post 75 hopping on board to put
the event together.
Wahl says that the first year
went pretty well, and the second
year, turnout was good despite a
conflict with a large race taking
place in Hopkinton.
“We’re trying to get the word
out to everyone, so we can make
it a success again,” says Wahl,
who says his post’s efforts currently
focus on the scholarship
fund, helping local Boy Scouts
and helping Christ Church, that
hosts the Legion Post’s meetings.
“Rep. Jeff Roy will be racing
with us. We’re pretty positive.
We’ve had a lot of help through
local businesses.”
“We have about 13 or 14
different sponsors from local
businesses in the Franklin and
Medway area, and those are just
the financial sponsors. We have
another 14 or so who donate for
the raffle,” says Leone. “Quite a
few companies that help us each
year. They’re very generous, and
we’re very thankful to them. It’s
good to see people take an interest
each year.”
Currently, the Franklin American
Legion Post 75 has about 60
or so members, says Leone, who
says both her post often works together
with Medway on different
initiatives. Post 75 recently participated
in the Franklin Memorial
Day Parade. Some of their
initiatives, says Leone, include
visiting the Brockton VA Hospital
to do outreach with veterans
about twice a year. In addition,
Leone explains that looking
the American Legion is courting
younger veterans who might
Medway Elementary PTO Honors Local
Community Partner
Inaugural Community Partner
Award Recognizes T.C.
Scoops Owner Chemini
The Medway Elementary
Parent Teacher Organization
(MEPTO) recently recognized
the contributions of a local business
owner with its first-ever
Community Partner Award––
an award to acknowledge those
in the Medway community who
go above and beyond to support
the town’s elementary schools
and students.
Tina Chemini, owner of the
T.C. Scoops ice cream shop and
café in Medway, was honored for
her generosity and dedication to
Medway’s elementary children
and families. She was presented
with her award at MEPTO’s
annual Basket Raffle and Ice
Cream Social fundraiser on May
6, which raised nearly $8,000
for the town’s two elementary
schools.
MEPTO co-president Meredith
Luzietti said it wasn’t surprising
that Chemini was at the
event as a volunteer, scooping ice
cream––much of which she donated––to
the hundreds of Medway
elementary families who
attend the annual fundraiser.
“Tina has done so much for
the children and families of
Medway, including MEPTO.
From opening the doors of her
business to host local organizations
like ours to donating items
for fundraisers to sponsoring
local youth sports teams, she
truly defines what it means to be
a community partner,” Luzietti
said. “This award is our way of
saying thank you for her kindness
and community spirit.”
“We’re humbled by the generosity
of Tina and the many
other businesses and organizations
in our town and beyond
who routinely support our elementary
schools, whether it’s an
event sponsorship or an in-kind
donation,” added MEPTO copresident
Lynn Roberts. “It’s this
unwavering commitment to our
youngest students that makes an
award like this possible.”
All funds raised through
MEPTO go directly to Medway’s
two elementary schools––Burke-
Memorial and McGovern––supporting
enrichment programs,
school supplies, cultural arts programming,
teacher appreciation
events, and other materials and
activities that enhance elementary
education. In the last school
year, the organization gave back
more than $20,000 to the schools
in addition to $15,000 to supplement
classroom libraries and
$35,000 to significantly expand
the Medway Community Farm
enrichment program. For more
Stop Hunger Now is an international
hunger relief agency
that has been fulfilling its commitment
to end hunger for almost
20 years. Since 1998, the
organization has coordinated
the distribution of more than
258 million meal packages in 73
countries, each feeding up to 6
people, and other lifesaving aid
to children and families in countries
all over the world.
“Across the globe, 1 in 9 individuals
go to bed hungry every
night. In many areas of the world
it can be whole communities
going to bed hungry every night.
It is our hope that by partnering
with Stop Hunger Now, the
Lions of District 33K can put an
end to hunger in our life time,”
said Millis Lions Club President,
Debbie Hayes.
According to District 33K
Lions 2nd Vice District Governor,
Margaret Menard (Hyde
Park Lions Club), “the Lions in
our district have adopted Stop
Hunger Now as a district-wide
service project for the last 3 years.
In June of 2017, the 1.4 million
Lions who make up Lions Clubs
International, will celebrate 100
years of humanitarian service.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we were
able to end hunger around the
world during our year-long celebration?”
According to stophungernow.
org, the organization’s goal is “to
end hunger in our lifetime by
providing food and life-saving aid
to the world’s most vulnerable
and by creating a global commitment
to mobilize the necessary
resources.” Since 2005, Stop
Hunger Now has partnered with
community groups of as few as
30 to 40 volunteers, to package
10,000 meals in two-hour sessions.
The assembly line process
combines dehydrated rice and
soy into 25-cent meals fortified
with 21 essential vitamins and
nutrients.
Stop Hunger Now also helps
with disaster relief and, since
1998, has transported donated
products like medicine, soap, vitamins,
Lasers and the Eye
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Lasers can be very useful in
treating many eye problems.
From helping patients eliminate
the need for glasses to cosmetic
procedures of the eyelids, lasers
have been very valuable in performing
bladeless eye surgery
The world of eye surgery was
revolutionized when in 1946, a
German Ophthalmologist used
the first laser to treat the retina.
Laser is light amplified by stimulated
emission of radiation. This
produces photons acting in synchrony,
with high power and
Use of Laser Pointers
Lasers can be very helpful as
a bladeless surgical device, but a
note of caution: Laser pointers
in hand-held, pen-like devices
that project a beam of laser light
are rapidly replacing the traditional
wooden pointers used by
lecturers during presentations.
However, these pointers can be
misused, for example, by students
in classrooms or by children at
home, and this has generated
safety concerns. There have been
reports of temporary blindness,
disorientation and headaches by
bus drivers, airline pilots, police
and teachers. Manufacturers are
now using similar low powered
laser devices in toys. Never look
at a laser pointer and never point
it at someone. Serious eye injury
(sometimes permanent) can result.
Laser Use in Diabetes
In some cases of diabetic eye
disease, small blebs can form on
the blood vessels of the retina.
These can later cause bleeding
and blurry vision. An Argon
Laser can be helpful in treating
these blebs. The same laser can
treat the entire retina in a scatter
fashion when more proliferation
of abnormal blood vessels is
noted.
Laser Use in Glaucoma
The laser can be used in a focused
beam of light to treat the
drainage angle of the eye. This
surgery makes it easier for fluid
to flow out of the front part of
the eye, decreasing pressure in the
eye. Two types of laser eye surgery
exist to open up the drainage
angle of the eye: Argon laser
trabeculoplasty and selective laser
trabeculoplasty.
Laser Use in After
Cataract Surgery
The lens capsule is the thin
bag that holds the intraocular lens
implant in position after cataract
surgery. This capsule becomes
clouded in about 25% of cataract
surgery patients. This causes
blurry vision and is also known as
secondary cataract. A YAG laser
can create a small opening in the
center of the capsule, allowing
light to enter the eye through a
central clear area. The procedure
is painless, requires no anesthesia,
and has very little risk.
Laser Use in Laser Vision
Correction
An excimer laser can be used
to correct a variety of refractive
errors of the eye, from nearsightedness
to farsightedness and
astigmatism. This type of laser is
extremely precise. It creates tar-
surgery. As a result, bruising and
swelling are kept to a minimum
and recovery is fast.
Laser Use in Macular
Degeneration
In selected cases of wet macular
degeneration, a photodynamic
procedure can be helpful:
A laser in combination of a lightsensitive
medicine target the abnormal
bleeding blood vessels to
block them.
Laser Use in Cataract Surgery
The laser has revolutionized
cataract surgery, allowing for a
completely blade-free procedure.
In addition to producing precise
cuts needed for surgery, the laser
used in bladeless cataract surgery
breaks up and softens the cloudy
cataract so there is less ultrasound
needed to remove the cataract.
Less ultrasound delivered inside
the eye translates into less energy
used in the eye and clearer corneas,
which in turn help producing
better vision on the first day
after the surgery. The same laser
is able to treat astigmatism during
the cataract procedure, producing
a better chance for being
glasses-free after the surgery.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art laser
technology to treat a variety of
eye problems. Dr. Kaldawy is
the first to offer bladeless laser
cataract surgery in the area and
among the first in New England.
The top 5 eye hospitals in the
country offer bladeless femtosecond
laser cataract surgery....So
do we. We are proud to bring this
technology locally. Laser eye surgery
is now available when you
need it and closer to home.
Cruising To a Successful
Weight Loss
New England Fat Loss Client Clocks Many Miles to Achieve His Goal
East Wareham resident Jeff
Monast admits he was initially
hesitant to commit to the onehour
drive to join New England
Weight Loss (NEFL). Once he
met Dr. John and the NEFL staff
and learned about the program,
however, the commute was a
minimal factor to achieve his
weight loss goals.
“When I first heard it was so
far away, I thought, ‘That really
stinks,’ but after my experience, it
is well worth the drive,” Monast
said.
According to forty-two yearold
Monast, the stimulus to walk
through that door on April 15
far outweighed inconvenience.
He was experiencing lack of energy
and was intrigued with their
20-to-40-pounds-lost-in-40-days
guarantee.
“I don’t know what clicked in
my head, but I honestly couldn’t
recommend it enough,” Monast
said. “I’ve been fighting my
weight since I’ve been 10 years
old, and I honestly did not think
it would be this easy to lose the
weight.
While being interviewed on
day 23 of his first stage, Monast
had dropped 34.9 pounds, already
within reach of that first
significant goal. The food combinations,
daily weight reports
and office visits guided the way,
but Monast also found Dr. John’s
assistance invaluable.
“I knew I would have no time
to prepare meals during one
weekend and we went back and
forth with ideas,” Monast said.
He is very accessible.”
Monast is thrilled with his
success of the Phase 1 portion of
the program, but is motivated to
enter the next stage. Through an
extensive diagnostic process, the
NEFL team will identify specific
foods to work with his individual
body chemistry and trigger additional
weight loss.
“Once I get through the 40
days, they give me a list of my
personal weight-burning foods
that are good for my body make
up,” Monast said. “I’m pretty excited
to see what they are.”
From the beginning, nothing
has come in the way of Monast
reaching his weight loss goals.
Not miles, time or commitment.
His true drive, however, comes
from his family.
“This is a lifestyle change not
a diet, and my number one reason
is because I have a beautiful
wife and two beautiful children
that I want to be around a long
time for,” Monast said.
Breast Cancer
Coalition
Annual Statewide Against the
Tide Fundraising Events
The Massachusetts Breast
Cancer Coalition (MBCC) will
be holding its annual, statewide
Against the Tide swim, kayak,
walk, and/or run fundraising
events again in 2016. Proceeds
benefit MBCC, which is the
state’s leading breast cancer organization
that seeks to understand
the causes of breast cancer
in order to find ways to prevent
the disease.
“We are very fortunate to
have such tremendous support
from citizens of Massachusetts
demanding greater protection of
their children’s future health in
our effort to stop breast cancer
before it starts,” says MBCC’s Executive
Director Cheryl Osimo.
“MBCC often is overshadowed
by larger, national breast cancer
organizations and messages of
early detection, treatment, and
finding a cure. We depend on our
generous media and supporters
to continue our unique goal of
breast cancer prevention.”
The Statewide Metro-Boston
Against the Tide will be held for
the 24th year at DCR’s Hopkinton
State Park (30 miles from
Boston, 20 miles from Worcester)
on Saturday, June 18, 2016. The
statewide Cape Cod Against the
Tide will be held for the 17th
year at DCR’s Nickerson State
Park (Brewster, MA) on Saturday,
August 20, 2016.
These family-friendly and inspirational
events bring people
from all demographics together
with one goal in mind: breast
cancer prevention. Both events
consist of several components:
competitive and recreational
swims, recreational kayak, recreational
walk, and USA Track
& Field certified 5K/10K competitive
and recreational runs.
Participants of all ages and
abilities can choose 1, 2, or 3
of these exciting activities. The
event also offers an Aquathon
“Splash and Dash” component,
where participants “splash” in
the competitive 1-mile swim and
immediately “dash” in the competitive
5K or 10K run (chosen
by the participant).
MBCC is inviting people
throughout Massachusetts to
register for one or both of the
events at www.mbcc.org/swim
or by calling 1-800-649-MBCC
(6222). Those who cannot attend
are invited to make a pledge to a
registered participant or existing
team. Participants may register
as an individual or as part of a
team. Registration is $40 for each
event up to a maximum of 3
events and $80 for the Aquathon.
We encourage all participants to
fundraise beyond the registration
minimum, as all proceeds support
the Massachusetts Breast
Cancer Coalition. Prizes will be
awarded to the podium finishers
and top fundraisers.

Millis Baseball’s Max Moran at Home Behind Home Plate
By Christopher Tremblay
Having found himself surrounded
by baseball, it was no
wonder that Millis native Max
Moran gravitated toward the
sport when he was looking for
something to do. Now a senior
in his final year at Millis High
School, Moran has perfected his
game looking to bring his game
to the college level.
“Since I can remember I was
always around baseball. My
grandfather was a Red Sox season
ticket holder, my Dad played
in an adult league and my older
brother Harry (19 months older)
played baseball as well,” Moran
said. “Right from the get go, I
was playing backyard baseball.
Next year, I’m hoping to play
at Norwich University in Vermont.”
As a youngster in the little
league system, Moran spent his
time trying out numerous positions,
but when he suited up behind
the plate, he felt at home.
Around the fifth grade he began
to really focus on his catching
and joined Nokona, an AAU
baseball team in which he played
for up until high school. Obviously
the training through the
year has paid off.
Millis Baseball Senior Captain Max Moran has invested time in
improving his physical play, and the effort has paid off.
“I got my first call up to the
varsity team in the State Tournament
when I was in eighth
grade to catch bullpen,” he said.
“Since stepping on the diamond
my freshman year, I have started
every game behind the plate. I
worked hard to get that opportunity.”
As a freshman, Moran was
5’4” 136 pounds playing against
what he refers to as 18-year old
monsters. Now, four years later,
he has not only grown to 6 feet
tall, but he also finds himself at
195 pounds of muscle.
“I had always battled through
the adversity that I was too small
and slow, so that’s when I started
my work ethic to improve upon
those negative attributes,” the
senior catcher said. “In order
to become better I had to sacrifice
hanging out with my friends
during the summer, but it has all
paid off.”
Moran prides himself as a defensive
catcher that doesn’t allow
anything to get by him. Millis
Coach Mike Carter firmly believes
that defense is the senior’s
best quality.
“My defensive game carries
me, it also separates me from the
other catchers in the league,”
Moran said. “I’m always working
back there. Having a gun for an
arm makes no difference if you
don’t have the ability to block.”
Coach Carter also sees his
pitch calling to be an asset.
“Max is definitely a great defensive
catcher, but his pitch calling
is sound,” the Millis skipper
said. “He’s smart and makes sure
that the pitchers know where
their mark is.”
Although a sound catcher
defensively behind the plate as
a first year varsity player Moran
struggled at the plate. The then
freshman was routinely finding
himself batting in the bottom
part of the lineup during
the early years, but now he has
moved his way up the lineup and
finds himself batting in the third
spot.
“Back then I was hitting seventh,
eighth or ninth batting in
around .250,” he said. “To improve
my hitting, we put a batting
cage in the basement, and
I began to do sprints and lift
weights. Now I’m seeing the ball
really well at the plate and have
improved my hitting to around
.350.”
One of two Mohawk captains
Moran takes this job as serious as
his catching.
“He has great leadership abilities
on and off the field,” Carter
said. “Having a lot of kids who
have never played varsity baseball
before we started out slow
and flat this year, but Max got on
the guys to motivate them and
get us to where we are today.”
As a senior captain, Moran is
looking to motivate his team to
playing well; behind the plate he
wants to play error-free baseball,
while continuing to improve his
hitting at the plate. As for the
team, he is hoping that the Mohawks
can get back to the Division
4 State Tournament and
improve upon their Semi-Final
loss from his freshman campaign.
“Hopefully, we can change
things around this year,” the senior
said. “It’s not all about the
wins during the regular season,
but what you do during the tournament.
Playing in the Tri-Valley
League we’re facing quality competition
every day.”
Moran is right, Millis plays a
tough regular season schedule,
one that should favor them once
they advance into the tournament
– just ask some of the other
championship teams at Millis.

Baker Takes Reins As Medway’s New Grid Coach
By Ken Hamwey
Chris Baker’s 16 years as an
assistant football coach at three
different schools proved to be
valuable experience and no doubt
a big plus when Medway High
officials settled on the 48-year-old
Franklin police detective as their
new varsity coach.
Baker, who worked as an assistant
at Franklin, Tri County
and Bellingham, replaces Dave
McSweeney, who resigned after
leading the Mustangs for the last
eight years.
Baker first worked in Franklin
at the freshman and junior-varsity
levels, then moved over to Tri
County as defensive coordinator
and later as its offensive coordinator.
When head coach Dan
MacLean left Tri County for Bellingham,
Baker became his offensive
coordinator before returning
to Franklin and Tri County.
“I’m excited about the opportunity
to coach at Medway,’’
Baker said. “It seems like a fantastic
fit. When I was an assistant at
Bellingham, Medway was a team
I never wanted to play. They always
competed hard, were disciplined,
tough, and hard-nosed.
And, when they beat us, they did
it with humility. That’s a credit to
coach McSweeney.’’
Baker’s goals as he takes control
of the Mustangs are general
rather than specific and that’s
probably a smart approach since
Medway is the only Tri Valley
League team that has yet to appear
in a playoff or Super Bowl.
He’s all about work ethic and passion.
“Our first season will not be
a transition year,’’ Baker emphasized.
“We’ll hit the ground running.
We owe it to the seniors to
get the most wins possible. We’ll
motivate the players to work
hard and if we do that successfully,
playoffs and Super Bowls
will happen. The coaching staff
has to do its part and the players
have to commit to a team-first attitude.’’
Baker, a Franklin resident who
is married and has two children,
is acutely aware of the importance
of being a head coach and
the responsibilities that go with
the position.
“I’m eager to get started and
also a little nervous, because
being a head coach is a big deal,’’
Baker noted. “I don’t want to let
the players down or the community.
It’s a major commitment
that takes laser focus and lots of
time. Being involved with the
youth program is an aspect that’s
very important.’’
Baker is a native of Canton
who played football (fullback/
linebacker) and baseball at Catholic
Memorial. At Curry College,
where he earned a degree in political
science, he played football,
baseball and was a captain in lacrosse.
He eventually got his masters
degree in criminal justice at
Western New England College.
During the hiring process,
Baker was interviewed twice and
faced questioning from two different
committees. He was selected
from a pool of eight candidates.
“Chris has lots of experience
and he emerged from interviews
as our leading choice,’’ said Rob
Pearl, the Medway athletic director.
“He cares about football and
he wants to help us succeed.’’
Baker’s passion for football
was evident when he was in his
mid-20s, working as a police officer
in Sandwich. Apprehending
youths on weekends for a variety
of offenses made him wonder
why there were no football programs
to keep them occupied.
“I got a Pop Warner program
started, and we lobbied
for fields,’’ Baker recalled. “We
raised money to supply the high
school with funds to get football
off the ground. Sandwich High
eventually started football.’’
Two of Baker’s fondest memories
as a grid assistant occurred at
Tri County and Bellingham.
“We beat Medfield when I
was offensive coordinator at Bellingham,’’
Baker said. “The game
was played over two days because
of poor weather. That was a big
win for us. When Tri County was
at Gillette Stadium for the Super
Bowl against Manchester-Essex
Regional, we were losing by two
touchdowns in the final quarter.
I told Kellen Knee to go in. He
was a scout-team player who
rarely got a chance to compete.
He later sent me a note telling me
how much he cherished that opportunity.’’
After his hiring became official,
Baker addressed his new squad.
“There were about 50 boys and
we talked about working in the
weight room, going to camps and
committing to strength and conditioning
regimens,’’ Baker said.
“The turnout was good and I got
good vibes. The kids are ready to
go to work.’’
Baker’s athletic philosophy
is to see his players reach their
potential, enjoy their sport and
compete to win. “Those elements
are part one in high school,’’ he
emphasized. “Part two is to be so
passionate about football that it
becomes important to pursue it in
college. I know there’s a Division
3 school out there for everyone.’’
45 Milford Street, Suite 3
Baker has lots of attributes to
be a success at Medway. He’s determined,
passionate, patient and
objective.
Chris Baker also believes football
is a laboratory for learning
life lessons. “Kids set goals, work
as a team, build friendships and
overcome adversity when they
play sports,’’ he emphasized. “I
like shaping football players and
citizens. I have high expectations
and I want discipline, but there’s
a proper balance. Winning will
take care of itself if the coaches
and players all give 110 percent.’’
If you’ve been down to the
Millis Town Park lately, you’ve
likely noticed that Millis Girls
Softball players have some new
digs. Varsity players now have
a new dugout, complete with a
roof, thanks to the efforts of the
Millis Girls Softball League and
a slew of parent and community
volunteers.
“The Millis Girls Softball
League has been talking about
this for awhile, about wanting to
renovate the dugout,” says Dave
Schofield, Vice President of the
group that heads up the softball
league. “It was really two things
– visually, it was antiquated and
buckling, but the second biggest
thing, equally important, is the
safety aspect.” Schofield explains
that the dugout is now protected
with a roof to shield from elements
and balls, and it has been
outfitted with a backstop area to
prohibit access from the public
where kids are warming up
“It’s a nightmare as a coach
when you see little kids running
around and someone’s on
the deck circle,” says Schofield.
“You’re just praying no one gets
hit.”
The idea was to bring the
dugout up to modern standards,
he says.
“The project has been great
from a community standpoint.
The public has really rallied together,”
says Schofield. Schofield
credits parent volunteers, local
contractor Ken Whelan, former
Millis Selectman Chris Smith,
Millis Town Director Charles
Aspinwall, and School Committee
Chair Marc Conroy. Whelan,
he says, came up with the plans
Millis Softball players have a safe, more updated dugout thanks to a
strong community effort. Photo courtesy of Millis Gifts Softball.
and priced out the project, and
once the group knew what the
scope was, with a price tag
($14,000), they went through various
chains of command to get
the project approved, including
a school committee approval on
April 5, followed by a Board of
Selectmen approval on April 11.
“There was a lot of prep work
behind the scenes,” says Schofield,
“but the actual work has
gone quickly. We really essentially
did it during April school vacation.”
Site preparation including
dismantling the old dugout,
preparing the ground and repurposing
fencing. Local contractors
in addition to Whelan donated
their time preparing the area.
Softball parents came together to
pour the foundation, and then to
assemble benches.
“It’s like an old fashioned
barn raising, that’s what this project
has been like,” says Schofield.
Millis Girls Softball League
has grown by 23% this year, says
Schofield. “The league is doing
terrific. More girls are doing clinics.
It’s a community now, where
people are really participating.
It’s fun to watch.”
The league is led by Bridget
Murray, President, Schofield
(VP), Kristy Lagos (Registrar),
James Lagos (Secretary), Kim
Donovan (Treasurer) and Erin
LeBlanc (Board Member, Fundraising).
The group’s philosophy,
says Schofield, is “only about
empowerment, challenging the
individual. If they feel like they’re
growing as an individual, wins
and losses don’t matter.”

MSTCA Division 4 Relays Sees Record
Participation from Millis
By Christopher Tremblay
In the past, the Millis girl’s
track and field team has sent
only a handful of teams to the
MSTCA Division 4 Relays. This
time around, under the guidance
of Head Coach Laura Connor
and Assistant Coach Liz Schildwachter,
the Mohawks sent an
impressive 11 teams.
“In the past we’ve been able
to send three or four teams to the
meet,” Connor said. “I believe
the fact that our program is getting
bigger allowed us to send
more qualified athletes.”
Relay teams that finished in
the top 6 received medals and the
respective points earned where
awarded to the team’s overall
score. Millis tallied 38 total points
and finished the relays with a
fourth place finish out 40 competing
Division 4 schools; Millis’
best placement in the history of
the track program.
Not only was Millis well represented,
but the Mohawks had six
relay teams finish in the top five,
including two first place finishes.
The Distance Medley Relay team
of Lucy Clayton, who began race
running the 1200, Parousia Cruz
(400), Hannah MacDonald (800)
and Jess O’Reilly (mile) was one
of the first place finishers. The
other winning relay team was
that of Theresa Cerullo, Jacquie
Mullally and Catherine Lane
throwing the javelin. Cerullo had
a toss of 109’ which qualified her
to take part in the National Tournament
later in June of this year.
“I couldn’t tell you the last
time that someone from Millis
qualified to participate in the
nationals,” the Mohawk Coach
said. “It was very exciting, especially
since she came so close last
year. This year she got the verification.”
Other top five finishes for Millis
belonged to the Discus Relay
team of Cerullo, Mullally and
Lane which took fifth place; the
JCONSTRUCTION
Since 1976
Sprint Medley Relay of O’Reilly,
Katie Malewicz, Morgan Kane
and Cruz, who also grabbed a
fifth place finish. The 4 x 200
team took third place with the
team of Malewicz, Sara Schildwachter,
Ciara Moynihan and
Kane; while the 4 x 400 team
of Malewicz, Julia Krauss, Cruz
and Moynihan finished second.
“The girls were not placed in
the fastest heat, but were still able
to take second place anyways
which made for an incredible
race,” Connor said. “The girls
broke the school record with a
time of 4:15.29. Norton, which
was in the fastest heat and took
first place overall had a time of
4:15.26, just .03 faster than us.”
On May 18, Millis placed
fourth at the TVLs league competition
at Westwood High
School.
Proven Tips to Winning a Bidding War
“If you are trying to buy a
home right now you have probably
realized that competition is
fierce! We experience this every
year in the late winter and very
early spring. Therefore we are
right in the midst of it. The reason
this happens is simply supply
and demand. At this time of year
there are more buyers than sellers
an offer on a home that is priced
Getting the Right Mortgage Broker
and obtaining a pre-approval
ahead of time is a must in order
to buy a home in this market. If
there are multiple offers on the
over a buyer who doesn’t.
Make it Personal
Writing a letter to the seller
about why you are the best person
Own a Piece of Paradise
PREMIER NEW CONSTRUCTION!
Ever dream of owning a
home in Florida? What if you
could own a home near Disney
and see return on your real estate
by using as a rental, with no
extra work on your part?
“We are only a couple of
miles from Disney World,” says
Matt Montalvo, who moved to
the Florida area from Central
Massachusetts 10 years ago.
“When we sell a home, we can
put owners into our vacation
rental program. Buyers have
an option where they can use it
strictly as a second home or rent
it out as a vacation home. We
oversee, maintain, manage and
market the property.”
Homes range in size from
2,000 to 20,000 square feet,
condominiums and town homes
perfect for retirees and vacation
homes for families to sprawling
estate homes for corporate executives.
All have private swimming
pools and are located in
golf resorts that feature golf,
water parks and even restaurants
among their amenities.
“All of them are professionally
managed and maintained,
beautiful luxury estate homes,”
says Montalvo.
“I must say, Matt has gone
beyond what I had experienced
with other realtors and also beiing
from Boston, he could relate
to what I was looking for, not
just as a home, but as an investment.”
