When I moved into Holliston 28 years ago, the water in town was fantastic However, a few years ago something changed, and now the smell of chlorine and complaints of brown water is not an uncommon occurrence. So what’s with Holliston water? Why does the water smell like chlorine and what’s with the water brown? Chlorination is the culprit for both situations. Chlorination is not new going back to the early 1900’s in municipal drinking water systems to kill and prevent bacteria such as e-coli from entering our drinking water. Municipalities like Holliston add chlorine mainly because it works, and it’s inexpensive. The brown water in Holliston is limited the residences serviced by well 5. Well 5 has elevated levels of iron and manganese within US EPA permitted levels required for municipal drinking water. When chlorine is added to the water, it bonds with the iron and manganese to create a particulate large and heavy enough to precipitate out of the water. This particulate settles to the bottom of Holliston’s water pipes and collects over time. At random, an upset condition, back flow from a pump turning on and off or a quick start of a pump, changes the water flow, causing the brown iron and manganese particles to be lifted off the bottom and delivering brown water to unsuspecting home owners. High levels of iron and manganese have also been found in well 1’s water, which is currently not in service. Holliston’s Director of the DPW Sean Reese put a plan into action last year gaining town approval for funds to hire an engineering firm to compile a report due sometime this month. Options include installing a treatment plant at well 5, similar to the well’s 1 and 6, and use what is known as green sand to remove the iron and manganese particulate on sight. An additional option would install new piping to transfer water from well 5 to well 6 for filtration then returning the filtered water to well 5 for distribution. Both options are expensive, $8 and $4 million respectively. Holliston provides excellent water service to its residences by providing clean bacteria free water. How many of us even think about water? We turn on the faucet and water comes out. It is seeing brown water in our tubs and sinks or catching the smell and taste of chlorine which tells us that we need to pay attention. The brown water issue is a work in process, and I expect we will hear more in the near future as Holliston’s DPW will choose a solution to present to Town Meeting for approval. June 2016 Local Town Pages www.hollistontownnews.com Page 9 Keefe Tech Students Bring Home Gold, Silver from State SkillsUSA Keefe Regional Technical High School students won gold and silver medals at the State SkillsUSA Conference, held in April, 2016. Over 2,500 participants from regional technical schools in Massachusetts competed in 71 skill competitions and 17 leadership competitions. Keefe Tech students competed in many skills areas, including Web Design, Graphic Communications, and Cabinetmaking. SkillsUSA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing high school and college students for careers in technical, trade, and skilled service occupations through local, state, and national programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development. Additionally, it builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes, and communication skills, emphasizing total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, lifelong education, and pride in dignity of work. Keefe Tech students Andrew Hancock of Holliston and Samantha Phipps of Ashland won first place for Web Design – Team Competition. Their gold medal winning team will represent Massachusetts at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky from June 20-25, 2016. More than 6,000 SkillsUSA state champions are expected to attend the week-long event, which will feature competitions, national office elections, and business and industry partners and sponsors. Students from Keefe Tech also took home two silver medals in team competitions. The Entrepreneurship – Team Competition silver medal winners are Madison Brown of Ashland, Kayla Keefe of Natick, Ella Rivas of Holliston and the Humanoid Robotics – Team Competition silver medal winners are James Denault of Framingham and Cameron Mulready of Framingham. Additionally, Madison Brown of Ashland won the Jannine FOGGED WINDOWS! SEE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN MISSING Baker Legacy Award and a $1,000 scholarship. The Jannine Baker Legacy Award is an educational scholarship supported by SkillsUSA Massachusetts and the Grainger Foundation given to recognize a student member of SkillsUSA Massachusetts who has distinguished themselves both academically and through their leadership and community service activities. Keefe Regional Technical School is a four-year public high school located in Framingham, Mass.
