In the past, Ashland/Holliston has had survivors and their family members walk that lap together, and caregivers are invited to walk this lap if they are present. Following the Survivors Lap, themed laps will take place, as well as games and contests for a fun-filled event. A moving part of the event takes place at 9 p.m., with the Luminaria Ceremony. During this solemn lap, a slideshow further honors those whom cancer took. The event continues with fun laps and fundraisers by participants the whole night through. At 6 a.m. the closing ceremony takes place, with a look back at what participants have accomplished and a renewed vow to continue the fight. By mid-May, the Relay for Life of Ashland and Holliston had 17 teams of 130 participants and had raised over $46,000 for the event. That’s down from past years, but there’s still time to sign up! O’Gara In an age where texting and screen time prevail, Medway kids are some of the first young people to learn the art of social grace, face-to-face. Last month, Medway Community Education partnered with Century Health Systems to offer “Socialsklz:-),” an after class aimed at teaching elementary to middle-schoolaged children the value of a good handshake, eye contact and healthy social interaction. Juanita Allen Kingsley has been teaching classes for about 13 years, beginning as a wilderness EMT trainer, but branching out with Life Skills courses for Century Health Systems. She explains how the Socialsklz:-) came about. “In 12 or 13 years I’ve been doing this, I’ve seen a huge shift in the comfort young people have in face-to-face conversations and being in a new environment or being comfortable with adults they haven’t met before,” says Allen Kingsley, who, as a child, learned much of these social skills having a parent who was a diplomat. She looks at the growing amount of screen time as the culprit keeping young people from interacting. “It doesn’t matter how good an athlete you are, if you can’t hold a conversation with parents, with future employers and with teachers, you’re not giving yourself the best chance that you can,” she says. “Practicing these skills is just like practicing everything else.” As a child, says Allen Kingsley, each night her family would have dinner with guests, and “what we got out of that was the confidence to be able to interact with anybody at any time.” Her course, she says, “amplifies and reinforces what parents have the time to (teach)” their children. “We send our children to ballet lessons, soccer camp, violin lessons, but we leave behind the opportunity to practice and learn good habits like these social skills.” “I’ve actually never done anything like it before, but it was really fun and it taught me a lot about different social skills,” says Elizabeth Kenney, 10.
