District 33K Lions Clubs Package 66,000 Meals for Hungry
More than 50 area Lions and
Leos (the youth arm of the Lions)
came together on April 23rd to
package meals for starving families
around the world. Coordinated
by Lions’ District 33K
Governor, Bill Donnellan, Lions
from 20 area Lions Clubs and the
Holliston Leos, packed rice, vitamins,
and soy protein into bags
that were sealed and boxed and
made ready to ship to the poorest
countries across the globe. Lions
Clubs from Ashland, Bellingham,
Blackstone, Boston Chinatown,
Framingham, Greater Ashland,
Holliston, Hopkinton, Hyde
Park, Marlborough, Medfield,
Medway, Millis, Natick, Norfolk,
Plainville, Sharon, Westwood,
and Weymouth participated.
Stop Hunger Now is an international
hunger relief agency
that has been fulfilling its commitment
to end hunger for almost
20 years. Since 1998, the
organization has coordinated the
distribution of more than 258
million meal packages in 73
countries, each feeding up to 6
people, and other lifesaving aid
to children and families in countries
all over the world.
“Across the globe, 1 in 9 individuals
go to bed hungry every
night. In many areas of the world
it can be whole communities
going to bed hungry every night.
It is our hope that by partnering
with Stop Hunger Now, the
Lions of District 33K can put an
end to hunger in our life time,”
said Millis Lions Club President,
Debbie Hayes.
According to District 33K
Lions 2nd Vice District Governor,
Margaret Menard (Hyde
Park Lions Club), “the Lions in
our district have adopted Stop
Hunger Now as a district-wide
service project for the last 3 years.
In June of 2017, the 1.4 million
Lions who make up Lions Clubs
International, will celebrate 100
years of humanitarian service.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we were
able to end hunger around the
world during our year-long celebration?”
According to stophungernow.
org, the organization’s goal is “to
end hunger in our lifetime by
providing food and life-saving aid
to the world’s most vulnerable
and by creating a global commitment
to mobilize the necessary
resources.” Since 2005, Stop
Hunger Now has partnered with
community groups of as few as
30 to 40 volunteers, to package
10,000 meals in two-hour sessions.
The assembly line process
combines dehydrated rice and
soy into 25-cent meals fortified
with 21 essential vitamins and
nutrients.
Stop Hunger Now also helps
with disaster relief and, since
1998, has transported donated
products like medicine, soap, vitamins,
eyeglasses and birthing
kits.
