The Holmes’ children’s entry
into C.A.R., their proven patriot,
found in Jackie’s family was Elnathan
Phelps, who lived in Pittsfield,
Mass.
“He’s their patriot and my
original patriot,” says Jackie
Holmes, who has since found
connections to three more, Wil-
Serving Needham &
Holliston 10-year-olds Reese (middle) and Taryn (right) Holmes and their sister Morgan attended the annual
convention of Children of the American Revolution in April, participating in electing officers. Here, they have
been “stickered” by candidates running for C.A.R. office.
liam Miller, Stephen Pitkin (of
Vermont) and possibly Rufus
Hamilton (of Brookfield). The
upstate New York native says,
“We keep finding more in my
family tree.” The Holmes children
have found their father
may also have a connection to
the American Revolution, and
paperwork has been filed for his
entry into the Sons of the American
Revolution.
Children who belong to CAR
belong until their 22nd birthday,
at which time they can join either
of the adult groups. The children’s
group has a local society,
a state society, nine regions and
then a national level, for which
they hold a convention each year.
The annual event follows a traditional
itinerary, which includes a
candidates’ campaign, an awards
banquet and a party honoring
the outgoing National President.
New officers are then installed.
This year’s event was presided by
National President Erin Jackson,
The Holmes children have
been members of C.A.R for almost
seven years. Both younger
girls, students at Miller Elementary,
say they enjoy the campaign,
especially when they get
“stickered,” which means that
they literally are stickered by
the candidates they meet at the
event.
