The Market Common is a trendy, up-and-coming, urban development, designed according to a comprehensive land-plan which includes pre-determined commercial, residential, and common recreation areas to make life appealing, balanced, and convenient for its residents. This means that prospective retailers are welcomed with open arms— to offer as diverse an array of products and services possible, to meet the needs of its community. The juxtaposition of modern-trendy meets laid-back charm is what makes living and visiting here so special and unique. Well-known retailer chains co-exist with independent and eclectic boutiques, each of whom adds their own characteristic flair and contribute their style to the diversity of this place. The area is ripe for those with an entrepreneurial bent to showcase their talents, services, and products to an influx of receptive retirees, young professionals, and new young families who are moving in here at a rapid pace. This community is growing quickly— so quickly, that who’s new and what they’re offering can get lost in the shuffle. To date, there is no trumpet call that heralds residents and visitors with the knowledge of what they can find in their own backyard. Our publication seeks to do just that, by connecting community with commercial businesses. From here on out, every edition of the Insider will showcase a local business or two, and give you the inside scoop on the face behind the name. Welcome to Market Common, where friendly, service oriented businesses wait to greet you with southern hospitality and charm.

Who’s in Your Neighborhood? Introducing the People and Places that Support You
By Melissa LaScaleia
The Market Common is an up-and-coming
urban development, designed according to
a comprehensive land-plan which includes
pre-determined commercial, residential, and
common recreation areas to make life appealing
and convenient for its residents. This means that
prospective retailers are welcomed with open
arms— to offer as diverse an array of products
and services as possible— to support residents’
all-encompassing lifestyle needs.
The juxtaposition of modern-trendy meets
laid-back southern beach is what makes
living and visiting here so unique. Well-known
retailer chains co-exist with independent and
eclectic boutiques, each of whom add their own
characteristic flair and style to the burgeoning
diversity of this place.
The area is ripe for those with an entrepreneurial
bent to showcase their talents, services,
and products to an influx of receptive retirees,
young professionals, and new, young families
who are moving here at a rapid pace. This
community is growing quickly— so quickly, that
who’s new and what they’re offering can get lost
in the shuffle.
To date, there is no trumpet call that heralds
residents with the knowledge of what they can
find in their own backyard, or showcases to
visitors, what this destination has to offer. Successive
issues of our publication will do just that;
Every edition of the Insider will highlight a local
business or two, plus we’ll bring you the personal
tidbits and inside scoop on the face behind the
name. We envision our community having
a greater connection with the businesses they
support and who serve your needs by reading
featured stories throughout the Insider at the
Market Common.
Welcome to Market Common, where friendly,
service-oriented businesses wait to meet you
The 4,000 acre area which we today call The Market Common has a rich history. This location has
served our area locally, regionally, and even nationally, as it was once the site of the former Myrtle
Beach Air Force Base until 1993. Although the base gas station, commissary, credit union, BX,
barracks, chow hall, post office, and much more, are long gone, the present community now has
a“town like” atmosphere consisting of townhouses, retail stores, and restaurants. In fact, many of
the streets in the district are named after former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Wing and Base
Commanders, or other notable Air Force members who were assigned to the base. The current
Market Common property and it’s surrounding facilities offer residents, visitors and local citizens a
vast array of opportunities for fun and community while preserving much of its past.
In each edition of the “Insider,” we will feature an article about the history of the area. Our main goal
in this section is to acquaint you with The Market Common history as you read through future
editions. There are reminders of the history of The Market Common all around; We will show you
what they are. Let’s begin with a brief overview- an introduction to the area during its early days…
The area on which the Market Common Properties currently lies used to house a civil airport in October, 1937.
Within three years, in June, 1940, it was taken over by the United States Army Air Corps Administration. It
went through a few changes during the next few years, serving our country throughout World War II as well
as housing the Myrtle Beach General Bombing and Gunnery Range from March, 1942, through November,
1943. Next it was named the Myrtle Beach Army Air Field from November, 1943 through September 18, 1947.
Finally in 1947 the United States Air Force was founded, and the Myrtle Beach Air Force had commenced. This
name was short-lived as the land was reverted to civilian control by November, 1947. Several years later, the
land was again under the control of the United States Air Force and was utilized as The Myrtle Beach Air Force
Base from April 1, 1956 through March 31, 1993. With a few bumps in the road and a lot of planning, the
concept of the Market Common came to light and a plan was put into action. It was established in 2008.
Charlie’s Corner is the domain of Charlie, the furry four-legged lady’s man of Market Common. Each month,
he’ll share information to help all new, visiting, and existing doggie community members get the most out of life
alongside their human companions. He’ll cover topics like best places to visit with your human, and expected
etiquette. Charlie would never be caught déclassé! It would ruin his image with the ladies... So this edition, we
welcome Charlie, and his take on life, as a Market Common pooch.
Hi, my name is Charlie, and I live here, in the Market Common. I have lots of neighboring
doggie friends to socialize with, but I mostly enjoy spending time with my people in this wonderful
neighborhood. I start my day with a walk on a leash. Myrtle Beach City and Horry County Laws
specifically state when in public, dogs must be on a leash at all times, no longer than 7 feet.
Overall, I must say, the Market Common is very considerate of my needs and that makes life for me
and my people a whole lot easier! There are strategically placed stations throughout, with waste bags and
disposal receptacles in case Grammy forgets a plastic bag from the house. Boy have I seen her look happy
when after collecting my #2 in a plastic bag, she could dispose of it after a short distance.
Even though I’m a pretty popular guy, I’m not allowed in every establishment due to store and DHEC rules.
So there are designated outdoor areas where I can enjoy meal time with my people. And I seem to always be able
to find an outdoor drinking station in front of local establishments when I’m thirsty. Look in the Dining and
Entertainment Section of this newspaper for the list of pet friendly establishments where
you can take me and my friends along.
And last but not least, my heaven on earth— the dog park. Barc Parc is located
on Howard Ave east of Farrow Parkway, and has sectioned areas for small and large
dogs, to ensure we’ll mix well. I can really let loose and play free here, with
obstacle courses, a pond to swim in and chase geese, and there are even benches
for people to sit when they get tired.
Welcome to my neighborhood. It’s pretty grand here. Until next time.
- Charlie
